School Report*
The School Board presents herewith its annual report, in
accordance with a long established custom. Accompanying it are
the reports of the Treasurer, the Book Agent, and the statistical
table, all of which are respectfully submitted to the citizens of
the district.
In reviewing the past school year (September, 1899

August, 1900), the School Board honestly believe it to have

been a year of profit and advancement. We are equally honest
when we say that one of the greatest obstacles which have pre-
vented even a more satisfactory result is the irregularity of at-
tendance, for which the parents are largely at fault. This past
year the schools all show a great lack of punctuality and regu-
larity in attendance. Can the parents expect their children to
progress in their studies unless they constantly encourage and
enforce the above virtues?
The registers show a large number of absences, and these,
with the accompanying 268 cases of tardiness, must of necessit}'
not only handicap the work of the teacher and School Board,
but also hinder to a great extent the progress of the child. In
fact only fifty-five different names appear upon the roll of per-
fect attendance for the year. We would urge the parents to
visit the schools more, not to find fault, but to encourage those
who are working for the good of the schools. Does not the
home influence rest upon every parent? And they have t ie
power to impress upon the child the importance of education,
and the first three things to be observed are punctuality, regu-
larity, and attention to the rules of the school and their studies.
Among those who have visited the schools the names of only
TOWN OF SANDWICH. 29
thirty-three parents appear. There is no better place to judge
of a teacher's qualifications or a scholar's advancement than iu
the school-room; and when there is more frequent visiting on
the part of the fathers and mothers of the cliildren, then they
will be better prepared to render righteous judgement, and by
so doing give a new impetus to the work. Every child takes
pleasure in showing his parents his capabilities and is encour-
aged by their presence in the school-room. Certainly the
teachers and School Board c:innot be expected to have an in-
terest paramount to that of the parents.
This year we have purchased for three of the schools "The
Students' Cyclopedia" and both teachers and pupils are pleased
with them. We hope to be able to provide the Cyclopedia for
all the schools in the near future.
The school propert}^ is in need of many repairs. In some
instances a few hours work will add greatly to the comfort of
the teacher and pupil, while in other instances more extended
i-epairs are fast becoming necessary. In order to meet these
demands money is required. It is hoped that a generous
amount for permanent repairs will be appropriated.
It is an object of concern to every parent and guardian, in
fact every being endowed with intellect or interested in any
form in education to try and devi'^e methods for the instruction
of the humblest of humanity, and to make useful knowledge
possible for all children t> obtain. The opening of the new
century offers another starting point in the effort to carry the
teacher and pupi! to still higher levels. The highest style of
teaching is that which imparts character while it imparts knowl-
e Ige. The teacher's
p
)sition is one of responsibility; her duty
is not only t) teach the children, but to instill into their minds
love for all that is good and abhorrence for all that is evil, and
place them upon the right path to happiness, honor, and virtue,
that they may become useful citizens and a credit to the com-
nmuity in which they live. The pupi! who leaves school with
knowledge and a pi rp >5iK is a thousand times more likely to
make a success of life than one who has only gained the knowl-
edge. We think that our town is to be congratulated in having
30 ANNUAL REPORT
so many good teachers who have their homes in our midst. Let
all concerned bear this in mind : that the public school is New
England's safeguard and future hope.
