WELCOME

Welcome to Music Connected 2012!

Its hard to believe that this is the 10
th
Music Connected event. Since its beginning in 2004,
Music Connected has grown from a small physical distribution fair held in a university
classroom to the UKs leading digital music conference. Each year has been a must-do event
for labels, with digital companies constantly entering (and leaving) the market and new
technologies, income streams, consumer trends and marketing techniques to master.

Music Connected plays a crucial part in ensuring that AIM members and independent
companies stay ahead of the curve on digital music matters. In 2005 iTunes explained the
routes for independent companies to get their music on the burgeoning service. In 2007 global
indie rights licensing agency Merlin launched at the event, going on to unlock millions in
revenue for independent companies. In 2009 Sound Clouds Dave Haynes explained how to
engage fans and market music via Twitter at a time when we were just thinking about signing
up. In 2011 Spotify revealed the traits of their userbase and their future plans for the service.

This year will be no different. We have an excellent programme of panels and presentations
and a terrific speakers line-up of industry figureheads happy to share their digital music
expertise.

There are three distinct areas you may find yourself in today:
The Digital Market Place: Head up the stairs at the back of the foyer to the first floor to
discover several halls of stands hosted by digital companies. Here you will find the companies
behind the latest digital innovations, the top digital services, the collection societies and much
more. We strongly recommend you spend time meeting every company exhibiting in the
Digital Market Place, as they may well be able to provide you with services that could make or
save you money or perhaps both!
The Conference Zone: Packed to the rafters last year, The Conference Zone will offer a
programme of panel discussions and presentations about potential revenue streams, new
business models and digital services and techniques for driving digital salesnot to be
missed.
The Networking Zone: Also known as the bar! A beautiful room overlooking the River
Thames where you can network throughout the day and enjoy lunch (complimentary) and
drinks from the bar. Tea, coffee and juices are served free of charge in this room between
9.15am and midday.
On behalf of AIM I hope that you find Music Connected a stimulating and productive day.

Boardroom Breakout Session: Digital Marketing Surgery with Good
Lizard Media

strategies and new digital revenue streams. Clients have included artists such as Underworld, Roots
Manuva, Prodigy, Suede and labels including Brille Records, Skint, Ninja Tune, Essential Music, R&S

presentations for unsigned and small independent record labels.

Sam Riley Good Lizard Media

David Riley is the director of Digital Marketing and Consultancy firm Good Lizard
Media.

Following a post university sales role at applausestore.com, he moved to Cooking
Vinyl where he ran the digital department for just under 4 years. Working on
creative digital marketing campaigns for artists as diverse as The Charlatans,
Dropkick Murphys, Nitin Sawhney and most notably Invaders Must Die, the
platinum selling album from The Prodigy.

Sam McGregor Good Lizard Media

With nearly a decade of experience playing in and tour managing underground
bands, Sam has sold CDs at the merch desk, collected email addresses, and
mailed out t-shirts from a garage. Couple that with marketing platinum selling
artists, running online shops and managing six-figure mailing lists, Sam has a
unique handle on the artist-fan relationship.

Thanks to several years spent running (and then selling) his own business and an
education background in management he has acquired first-rate business acumen
to go alongside his music marketing knowledge. After setting up his first artist website in 2001, Sam has
never looked back, since then he has worked on mobile apps for the likes of You Me At Six, designed
and implemented creative digital marketing campaigns for artists including The Subways, Chicane,
Suede, The Cribs, and Underworld. Expanding his skills in to TV & Film promotion, bringing The Office
and Only Fools And Horses in to the 21st Century, creating and managing their now thriving social
media presences.

After sharing a stage and a beer with David Riley in 2003, their paths crossed again in 2009 and Sam
now occupies the crucial role of Marketing Director at Good Lizard Media.

Sam maintains a healthy interest in all things digital and is excited to see how the relationship between
artist and fan becomes central to all marketing.
