1. INTRODUCTION
The function Oily-Water Bilge System is to handle and give a treatment for the oily-water
from bilge well in the engine room. The water is mixed with oil from main engine and lubrication
system. Oily-water separator is used to separate oil and water, and than the oil is sent to sludge
tank and the water is discharged to the sea via overboard if the oil contained in the water is less
than 15 ppm. If it more than 15 ppm, the oily-water must be sent back into oily water bilge tank.
The main components of this system are :
Gear Pump
Gear pump is used to move the oily-water from bilge well located in engine room to oily-
water bilge tank.
Screw Down Non Return Valve
This valve is used in one direction flow. The characteristic of flow is high on pressure. This
valve is located at the outlet side of gear pump.
Remotely Screw Down Non Return Valve
The characteristic of this valve is similar with SDRNV, but this valve can be controlled
remotely in the other place only by pressing the button. Besides that, this valve is usually
located near the bilge well to prevent the oily-water return to the bilge well when gear
pump is worked.
Butterfly Valve
This valve is one of stop valve types. In this system, this valve is used to open and close the
flow in the pipe after branching and before the gear pump.
Bell Mouth Pipe End
Bell mouth is used in the end of suction pipe side near the bilge well to direct the flow, in
order the quantity of oily-water in the bilge well can be sucked by the gear pump optimally.
Bell mouth enlarged funnel-shaped end.
Strainer
Strainer is located between remotely screw down non-return valve and bell mouth pipe end.
Strainer is used to filter the oily water from dirt
OWS (Oil Water Separator)
OWS is used to separate water and oil that contained in the fluid. In the OWS, there are
include the gear pump, OCM (Oil Control Monitoring), and pressure gauge.
2. STEP OF CALCULATION
Bilge Well Capacity
According to BKI 2014 Vol II Section 8-B 5.3, bilge well shall have a capacity of more than 0.2
m
3
.
Oily-water Bilge Tank Capacity
According to BKI 2014 Vol III Section 11-O 3.3, oily bilge water holding tank shall be provided.
The capacity of the oily bilge water tank shall be determined as follows :
Table 2.1. Oily Bilge Water Tank Capacity
Main Engine Rating (kW) Capacity (m

Up to 1000 4
Above 1000 up to 20000 P/250
Above 20000 40 + (P/250)

Sludge Tank Capacity
The minimum capacity of sludge tank that could be found at MARPOL 73/78 Annex I Chapter
II Regulation 17, with the formula below :
V = K
1
x C x D (m
3
)
Where, K
1
= 0.01 for ships where HFO is purified for M/E use.
= 0.005 for ships using MDO or HFO which doesnt require purification
before use.
C = daily fuel oil consumption. (m
3
/day)
D = maximum period of voyage between ports where sludge can be discharge
ashore. (days)
OWS Specification
According to BKI 2014 Vol III Section 11-O 3.1, The capacity of oily bilge water separator is to
be specified according to the following table.
