A leading critic of the Common Core Standards reit-
erated her objections during an Oct. 4 meeting in
Germantown organized by Common Core opponents.
Common Core are the voluntary national standards
developed by a national group of state school officials
under direction from the National Governor's
Association and the Council of Chief State School
Officers.
The Common Core standards were adopted in the
state of Wisconsin by state Superintendent of Public
Instruction Tony Evers in 2010. The Germantown School
District approved a motion in December rejecting
Common Core in favor of developing its own standards.
Why more local school districts arent doing some-
thing, I dont know, said Sandra Stotsky. Stotsky spoke
at an Oct. 4 event held at Kennedy Middle School that
was organized by an organization called Protect Your
Childs Future.
Stotsky, professor emerita at the University of
Arkansas Department of Education Reform, was part of
the validation committee for Common Core but refused
to sign off on it.
According to Stotsky, work for Common Core started
behind the scenes in 2007-08 before it was publicly
announced in 2009. Stotsky said because private
organizations developed the plans, it is hard to get infor-

The Germantown Community
Scholarship Fund is planning a mini mud-
der event at the high school next June to
raise funds for teacher grants.
The proposal was explained to the
Germantown School Board Oct. 13 by
Dave Wegener, a member of the scholar-
ship fund board of directors.
Wegener said the event is called the
US Bank Mini Mudder which is anticipat-
ed to raise approximately $9,000 for
teacher grants. The course will be one mile
and will include several water-related sta-
tions for children from kindergarten through
eighth grade participating in the event.
The proposed event is based on a simi-
lar run held at Cedarburg High School. The
course will include a mud crawl and a tire
section. The run is proposed to occur either
on the weekends of June 20-21 or June 27-
28. There would be staggered starts begin-
ning at noon based on age groups.
Wegener said the fund was seeking a
date that was after graduation and before
July. He said the dates were open for the
event on the high school property.
Wegener said that district grass on the
route would be restored to its original con-
dition afterward. He said that between 200
to 300 children are anticipated to partici-
pate in the event. He added that US Bank
has committed to be a sponsor while addi-
tional sponsors will be sought.
I think its wonderful. I think its kind of
exciting, School Board President Robert
Soderberg said of the proposal.
School Board Administrator Jeff Holmes
thanked the scholarship fund for the
advance work for the proposed event.
They have done a fantastic job of put-
ting together an event that we can get
behind, Holmes said.
Ric Ericksen, director of business and
auxiliary services, said the scholarship fund
will be requested to fill out a facility use
request.
I dont think you will have any issues. I
think its going to be fun, Soderberg
added.

PET OF THE WEEK
Benji is a precious Havanese mix puppy
who was transferred to us from MADACC
due to lack of space. He is 11 months old,
and in need of his fur-ever home. He has
tested well with dogs here at WCHS, and
would be good with children 12 years and up. He will need a
owner that will provide him with a good routine and structure,
as well as daily exercise. Benji gets along well with cats
providing they give him a correction. We hope you come in soon
to meet this adorable young pup.

Tip of the Week: Not only can Halloween candy cause an upset stomach, but candy like chocolate can be
toxic to pets. As tempting as it might be to leave a bowl of candy on a nearby table for your family to graze
on, it's twice as tempting for your pup. Halloween candy left within reach of your pet is in an invitation, so
keep all your goodies sealed and out of sight (and smell) to avoid a disaster.

Cross country: Germantown
girls win at Port Invite
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Germantown's biggest rival gave the
Warhawks their first loss of the season Oct.
10 while Hamilton came closer to qualifying
for the playoffs.
Germantown lost to Homestead 35-30.
After conceding the first touchdown,
Germantown scored the next 21 points. A
pass from Connor Schulz to Carter Schmitz on
a 34-yard touchdown play gave
Germantown a 21-8 lead with 4:31 left
before halftime.
But the Highlanders answered with a 80-
yard drive that ended with 1-yard touchdown
run by Matt Winters with less than a minute
remaining to make the score 21-15 following
the kick after touchdown. The Highlanders
then took the second quarter kickoff and start-
ed a drive that finished with a 5-yard run by
Winters at the 6:47 mark of the third quarter.
Germantown responded with a drive that
ended with 36-yard field goal by Schmitz at
the 3:50 mark of the third quarter.
Homestead dominated the time of posses-
sion on its next two drives, which ended with a
34-yard run by Nick Allen and a 3-yard run
by Winters, giving the Highlanders a 35-24
lead with 1:27 remaining.
They knew what they needed to do. We
needed to get the ball back and we didnt at
times, Germantown Coach Jake Davis said
of Homestead.
He then added: In games like this youve
got to do everything right, you cant let those
little things go.
Germantown quarterback Dwayne
Lawhorn Jr. and Schultz connected on a 30-
yard pass play with 11 seconds remaining, but
Homestead recovered the onside kick.
With the loss, Germantown fell into a tie
with Homestead for the North Shore
Conference lead with one week of regular
season play remaining. Germantown has a 5-
1 conference record and a 7-1 overall mark.
Hamilton 35, Brookfield Central
14: Hamilton scored the final 21 points of the
game, with Sam Herriges scoring on runs of
14 and 10 yards and Isaiah Webb scoring on
a 50-yard run.The win was the second in a
row for Hamilton, which improved its record to
3-3 in the Greater Metro Conference and 3-5
overall. Hamilton can qualify for the playoffs
next week with a win over Wauwatosa East.
Herriges led all rushers with 101 yards
and three touchdowns on nine carries.
Menomonee Falls 14, Brookfield
East 6: Quintin Handy opened the scoring
for Menomonee Falls with a 88-yard run at
the 9:58 mark of the first quarter. East
answered with a drive that ended with a 2-
yard run by T.C. Swittel (the extra point was
unsuccessful). Michael Bowe of Menomonee
Falls finished the scoring with a 2-yard run at
the 5:08 mark of the third quarter. With the
win, Menomonee Falls had a 5-1 conference
record and a 6-2 overall mark.
Football: Homestead tops Germantown

over Neenah two days later. Menomonee
Falls will host Sheboygan North at 7 p.m.
Oct. 23.
Hamilton advanced out the regional
bracket with a 2-1 win over Brookfield
Central Oct. 16. Hamilton opened the post-
season with a 10-0 win over Milwaukee
Riverside Oct. 14. The Chargers will now
play at Arrowhead in the sectional semifinal

the regional final with a 3-2 loss at
Sheboygan North Oct. 16. The Warhawks
opened the postseason with a 3-2 win over
Oshkosh West two days earlier.

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, I just had a full mouth makeover in
Costa Rica and am unhappy. They built up my teeth too
much and they look like horse teeth. Can you adjust them
for me and how much will it cost?
Dear J. I am sorry you are unhappy and am also sorry
you felt the need to go out of the United States to have
your work done. Since I have had the opportunity to see
you and your restorations I can only comment that there
were cement lines between your crowns and your teeth
and these will eventually dissolve and you will notice
gaps between your teeth and crowns. This will lead to
decay and discomfort. While not all tourist dentistry is
bad, patients need to realize that if dentistry is cheaper it
may not be comparable to what you would have received
here. If a patient is not satisfied it is up to the patient to
return to the dentist that did the work for follow-up care.
Adentist cannot take responsibility for altering another
dentists porcelain crowns. Adjusting crowns can lead to
chipping, porcelain fracture or exposure of the tooth
preparation. So when you are considering medical
tourism please realize that you may need to go back to that
country several times for adjustments, replacements or
further treatment and you should allocate funds for that up
front. Dentists in the United States use materials that have
been accepted by the American Dental Association and
most stand behind their work. One red flag is that you
were unhappy with your temporary crowns. If a dentist is
conscientious they will use the temporary crowns as a
blue print to help establish the proper esthetics for a full
mouth makeover. To simply shave the teeth down
because they are too big may lead to unaesthetic crowns
that do not have the proper shape. Then they may need to
be started from scratch.
Dear Dr. Winter, I have bulimia and am ready to have
my teeth fixed. They are chipped and sensitive and ugly
and I really am afraid they will keep breaking down
without some serious help. How much will this cost. I am
still purging but have really cut down on this habit.
Dear Jane, I would need you to be in remission to help
you with definitive crowns. That being said there are
temporary solutions such as bonding and night guards that
may help you in the short term while you continue to
battle this illness. Working with a psychologist and
perhaps a psychiatrist can help tremendously in working
on strategies for success.
Dr. Winter my 82 year old mom needs help with her
denture! She takes it out to eat and puts it on the table
because she has so much pain while wearing them.
Dear Ann, we would be happy to see your mother to
discuss options. Perhaps a silicone liner could help her to
have less discomfort or mini-implants could be
evaluated to help hold her dentures in while she eats.
We would be happy to perform a second opinion or
comprehensive examination and x-ray visit for our
readers! Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your
visit. We invite you to visit our new website at
www.hamptondentalassociates.com
For photos and videos of our dentistry and
information about implants and cosmetics.
We look forward to meeting you!

GERMANTOWN POLICE BLOTTER
mation about how and why decisions were
made.
Its all secret, whatever they choose to
give you is whatever they choose to give
you and you have to figure out all the rest,
she said.
Among the groups that werent includ-
ed in the development of the standards
were parents, Stotsky said.
Parents were not the focus of this all,
and still arent, Stotsky said.
Stotsky said teachers also werent
included in the Common Core development
and have been stunned as to what they
have to teach to Common Core standards.
State legislators and local school district
officials were also left out of the process,
Stotsky said.
Common Core has so many tentacles
and were now beginning to see more com-
ing out, it would have been useful if there
had been even the same amount of discus-
sion that took place when your own state
standards were developed, she said.
Among Stotskys objections to Common
Core is that the language arts portion of the
standards emphasizes writing and not read-
ing, stress information text and not complex
literacy text, reduces literary study in
English classes, and has no list of recom-
mended authors and literary movements.
It has no literary historical knowledge.
The standards are mainly skills, Stotsky
said.
Stotsky said that several states are tak-
ing a second look at Common Core. In
Oklahoma, state officials are going back to
their previous standards. In Ohio, a bill is
being introduced before the states Rules
and Regulation Committee to get rid of
Common Core and adopt previous stan-
dards from Massachusetts while Ohio
develops its own standards.
Stotskys presentation was organized
by an organization called Protect Your
Childs Future. Brian Medved, a member of
the Germantown School Board, is listed as
the organizations president on its website.
Medved said Protect Your Childs Future
is a new non-profit organization that was
formed a few months ago mainly as a
response to all of the false education
reforms that are being foisted upon us by all
those that are controlling our education sys-
tem.
He said the Germantown event was the
first one held by the organization and
added that Protect Your Childs Future is
getting requests for presentations in other
parts of the state.
We are proponents of local control
and want more districts to take charge of
the decisions in their own district. This is
part of our message and we plan to edu-
cate others on how to do just that, Medved
said. We believe education is best done at
the local level. But we will not ignore our
legislators when they are trying to take
away that local decision making by taking
more control away from the districts. We
are hoping the state powers will leave the
districts to make the best decisions for their
local communities.

Approximately 300 homes in
Germantown were affected by a power out-
age during the morning hours of Oct. 16.
According to information from WE
Energies, power outages were reported in
an area north of Mequon Road, south of
Main Street ,east of Division Road and west
of Squire Drive. Power was out between
6:30 to 9 a.m.
Brian Manthey, a spokesperson for WE
Energies, said the outage was caused by a
faulty underground cable.
The outage was one of two in southeast
Wisconsin the company had to deal with
Oct. 16. An outage occurred in the
Greenfield area between 6:15 and 7 a.m.
which affected 1,100 residents. Manthey
said that outage was also caused by a
