ANSYS Tutorial: Beam cross sections
ANSYS Workbench Tutorial: ANSYS Workbench V12 finally makes it possible to offset and align cross sections for beams and shells in a direct and easy
way. The article shows how to do it.
INTRODUCTION
ANSYS Workbench V12 finally makes it possible to offset and align cross sections for beams and shells in a direct and easy way! Offsetting beam cross
sections can be done in ANSYS DesignModeler and or the Mechanical application. Below are detailed explanations on how to it.
OFFSET BEAM CROSS SECTION
We create geometry with line bodies and surface bodies as usually in ANSYS DesignModeler and assign suitable cross sections to different beams. Now we
can select Offset Type as User Defined.
Figure 1. Define offset
Before we fill values for X/Y Offset, we better take some minutes to understand coordinate systems for beam cross section. First of all, we have to recognize that
DesignModeler uses a different coordinate system for cross sections than the one used in the ANSYS Mechanical environment. In DesignModeler it is the Z-axis
that aligns with the edge tangent while in ANSYS environment it is X-axis. This difference in orientation has no influence on the analysis. DesignModeler displays
the coordinate systems for beams to make it perfectly clear. Only Y- and Z-axis are displayed, but the X-axis can be identified by the right-hand rule.

Figure 2. Coordinate systems for beams.
If we accept default settings, after importing the geometry and meshing, we will get something like this:
Figure 3. Without offset.
However if we need offset the cross sections for beams, we can set offset values either in DesignModeler and refreshing geometry, or in Mechanical under
Details of corresponding line bodies. Please remember that we need to have a clean mesh to make the updating possible.

ALIGN BEAM CROSS SECTION
After assigning and offsetting cross sections, we have to check their orientations to ensure they have desired alignment. The default alignment is plane normal, as
shown in Figure 2. We can modify alignments easily. First, select the line body or bodies in the graphics window and in the Details View it appears two alignment
options: Alignment Mode and Cross Section Alignment.
Figure 5. Alignment options
There are two methods to assign alignments: by selecting plane axes or 2D edges and by vector. Figure 6 and Figure 7 illustrates that we get the same alignments

by these two ways. Furthermore, after assigning alignment we can modify it by Rotate and Reverse Orientation.

OFFSET SHELL CROSS SECTION
For shell cross sections, we have to set Offset Type in Mechanical, under Details of Surface Body. There are four choices: Top, Middle, Bottom and User
Defined.

Now offsetting and aligning cross sections with suitable values, we change the FE model to something like this:
