Jennifer Lunny, RN, MSN GUIDELINES FOR TEAM LEADERS The purpose of this learning strategy is to provide you with insight into the roles of the nurse as manager of client care and the health care team. This activity will also fulfll the curriculum objectives relating to the roles of the nurse and the development of managerial and leadership skills. Your task will be to manage time and people so that the clients care is completed as needed. You are not responsible for any of the teaching or evaluative responsibilities of the clinical instructor. Goals: The management of time, the health care team, and small groups of clients. Skills needed: Organizing, prioritizing, communicating and constructing a database. Knowledge needed: Basic information about clients conditions, labs, medications, and the treatments required for their care. Your team leader assignment will be for one day and you will manage a team of students and their assigned clients. You will work closely with the hospital staf and the instructor so that you will have any support and guidance you require. This is an introductory learning experience that is designed to teach you as much about yourself as about nursing. It is however, an expectation that all students will participate in this activity. The following list outlines the main tasks that are expected of you as team leader. Try to have fun while you learn and gain a new perspective on managing groups of clients. 1.Pick up the assignments for your team listing the name, room number and diagnosis of each client. 2.Check the clients records for the specifc care and treatments required for these clients. 3.Look up the defnitions of the diagnoses, classifcations of meds and the purpose of treatments. 4.Listen to the report with the students and obtain information from report from each member of your team. A data sheet is attached to help you to organize this information. 5. Make rounds to each room, introduce yourself to the clients and check that the data base is correct 6.If any problems should arise, you will work with the student, clinical instructor, and staf to resolve these. 7. Check the charts frequently for new orders and communicate these to your team and to the instructor. 8.Keep aware of the teams activities and the clients status throughout the day. 9.At the end of the clinical day, make rounds one last time to receive report from each student and in turn give report to your instructor. Include what was done, what not done and why, any problems and their resolution, and a comment about the clients general condition at present.
