Decorated pumpkins brought
smiles to all at the October 12
meeting of the New Haven
Sodbusters 4-H Club. The annual
fall celebration included pumpkin judging with sweets for awards.
Prior to the beginning of the
meeting, installation of the 201415 officers occurred: President
Emily Kaul, Vice President Andrew Bogard, Secretary Aiden
Allen, Treasurer Reed Kohlmeyer,
Reporter Patrick Bogard, and Photographers Talia Mentjes and Josh
Zemke.
Demonstrations on how to make
chocolate chip cookies were given
(to show the dos and donts of
giving a demonstration) by Rachel
Ryan, Emily Kaul, Logan Mentjes,
and Talia Mentjes. Jason Ryan
showed how to make decorated
ice cream cones, and Hannah Ryan
demonstrated how to make crazy
cake.
Fair projects were reported on
by Aiden Allen (historic weap-

onry), Logan Mentjes (Origami),

Talia Mentjes (photography), and
Rachel Ryan (sewing). Old business included discussion of fall
Adopt-A-Highway, National 4-H
Week window display at Hardware Hank, and the county candy
sales fundraiser. The youth leaders also had a pizza party at Jan
McNallans house.
Upcoming events include a regional officer training on Saturday, October 25 which officers
can attend. Olmsted County
Achievement Night is scheduled
for November 17 at the 4-H building in Rochester.
Members were encouraged to
complete their online enrollment,
and parent volunteers were encouraged to complete volunteer
trainings online too.
The next meeting is planned for
Sunday, November 9, at 5 p.m. at
St. Michaels Church. If you are
interested in joining the NHSB 4H club, please contact key leader
Michelle Rossman at 292-1191.

Gouache paintings and linocuts

featured in Crossings exhibit
ZUMBROTA Susan Solomon displays her paintings, and Lori
Biwer-Stewart her linocut prints, at an exhibit October 6 through
November 23 at Crossings. A reception is Friday, November 21, 6
p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This immediately follows the first day of Crossings
annual Holiday Art Fair, an indoor art festival that is 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
on Friday, November 21, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November
22, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, November 23.
Solomons gouache on panel works employ intense colors, something that comes of her childhood surroundings.
I grew up in Las Vegas, a neon city with gorgeous sunsets, which
strongly influenced my color sense, she explained. Solomon, who
now lives in St. Paul, also named Manet, Rouault and Jamie Wyeth as
her painting heroes.
She enjoys painting others poems and has produced 10 chapbooks
of poems accompanied by her paintings. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, she cartoons and edits Sleet Magazine,
an online literary journal.
Biwer-Stewart creates linocuts, often incorporating other forms of
printmaking such as monoprint or collograph to create interesting
textures and elements. She says her work revolves around subjects
that explore life and experiences from her own perspective.
The themes found in my work and are based on dreams, beliefs and
observations of myself and others. I also love to incorporate symbolic
images such as birds, keys, and doors into my work which I hope
encourage thought and interpretation, she said.
Ultimately I do not seek to unravel mystery or provide answers,
but rather record my observations and ideas in whimsical images,
encouraging others to seek out the answers for themselves.
She came to art as therapy.
As long as I can remember Ive always felt very isolated in the
world. I finally sought help in my 30s and now take medication for
depression. I believe that is what led me to become an artist, and plays
a significant role in my linocuts now.
The exhibit and reception are free, and people may view the exhibit
during regular hours: MTWF 10-5, Thurs. 10-8 and Sat. 10-4. Crossings is located at 320 East Ave. in Zumbrota. More at
www.crossingsatcarnegie.com.

Temporary off-highway vehicle trail

closures begin in November
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will restrict recreational use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs) in some areas during
the upcoming firearms deer hunting season. Vehicles affected by the
restrictions include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-highway motorcycles (OHMs) and registered off-road vehicles (ORVs) such as fourwheel drive trucks that are not being used in conjunction with deer
hunting by a licensed deer hunter.
The restrictions, which apply to state forest trails and access routes
but not to state forest roads, aim to protect recreational riders from
potentially unsafe riding conditions and to minimize conflicts between deer hunters and recreational riders who may inadvertently
disturb them.
Licensed deer hunters may still use these routes in conjunction with
their hunting activity:
Before legal shooting time.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
After legal shooting hours.
Effective dates of the recreational riding restrictions will be:
Nov. 8 23 for the northeastern Minnesota 100 Series deer season.
Nov. 8 16 for the Minnesota 200 Series deer season.
Because recreational OHV trails located in southeastern Minnesota
close Nov. 1 each year, no additional OHV riding restrictions are
necessary in that part of the state.
While many recreational OHV riders have voluntarily opted not to
ride forest trails during deer hunting and small-game seasons, recreational OHV riding has become a year-round sport for many. DNR
officials remind everyone who visits Minnesotas state forests this
fall to put safety first.
For more information, see the 2014 deer season map online at
www.mndnr.gov (http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/hunting/
2014/deer_map.pdf) or contact the DNR Information Center at
info.dnr@state.mn.us or 651-296-6157 or 888-646-6367 between 8
a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

By Harland Hiemstra
DNR information officer
Slowly waving what looks like a small rooftop TV antenna from
side to side, Erica Hoaglund steps carefully through the little bluestem,
blazing star and black-eyed Susans growing in the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. In her other hand she holds a small receiver
that periodically emits a chirping sound, louder or softer depending on
where she points the antenna.
Out there somewhere in the expanse of sun-soaked sand and prairie
plants is snake number 431, a female plains hognose with a small
radio transmitter implanted inside. Hoaglund is tracking it as part of a
study to learn more about the rare species, its behavior and habitat
needs. That information will help provide baseline data to gauge the
results of restoration efforts soon to get underway in portions of the
adjacent Sand Dunes State Forest, where snakes also are being tracked.
The hognose snake is currently on the state species of special
concern list, and it is also a species in greatest conservation need in the
DNRs State Wildlife Action Plan.
A biologist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
Nongame Wildlife Program, Hoaglund tracks her quarry to a small
pile of brush. She pokes around and finds the snake taking refuge
under a log. A small bulge toward its tail indicates where the transmitter about the size of a small unshelled peanut has been implanted.
Its only within the past few years that snake telemetry has been made
possible by the development of transmitters small enough and with
sufficient power and battery life. The unit weighs only four grams
and will keep transmitting for a year and a half, with a range between
a quarter and half a mile.
She picks up the snake and it coils lazily around her hand. With its
upturned snout used for digging the snakes face vaguely
resembles a diminutive pig. Hoaglund examines it, then slips it into a
plastic bag that she attaches to a scale: 150 grams. She enters the
information on an electronic tablet, recording the location, time, and
air and soil temperatures as well.
Based on its weight and appearance, Hoaglund suspects the snake
may be gravid, which would be noteworthy because it already laid one
clutch of eggs earlier in the season, and double-clutching has rarely
been reported in wild snakes living in northern climates. She gently
slides the hognose into a white cloth sack before phoning her colleague Chris Smith, whos tracking other snakes nearby.
Smith contacts a local snake breeder who has an ultrasound machine with which he can check to see if the snake is indeed pregnant.
The process is much like the one experienced by many an expectant
human mother: a handheld scanner is slid across the snakes abdominal area, producing a grainy black and white image on an attached
monitor. The result in this case is negative, so the hognose is returned
to its log on the prairie.
Number 431 is one of several plains hog-nosed snakes being tracked
in the area. Each snake is checked two or three times a week. The
study, which eventually will include about 25 snakes and go for two
or three years, is the largest done on this species. Already, the new
information is dispelling some prior misconceptions.
Its been illuminating to see sometimes how wrong we can be,
Hoaglund says. Before this study it was commonly believed that they
didnt move around much. Now we know that they actually move
around quite a bit.
Hoaglund and Smith also have learned that hognose snakes tend to
return to the same place every fall, over-wintering underground in a
group with other snakes. They typically linger in an area before laying
eggs, then head off toward a wetland where they eat things like frogs,
toads, skinks even turtle eggs. Hoaglund recalls one snake she found
with a large bulge in its midsection: while in captivity it vomited out
an egg from a Blandings turtle, a threatened species.
Thats nature, Hoaglund says. One rare species eating another.
Snakes are ectotherms, meaning their temperature varies with their
surroundings. Because they dont have to expend energy maintaining
a constant body temperature, theyre more efficient than mammals,
sometimes needing to eat as little as once a month. Their forked
tongue helps provide them with a sense of direction, sensing different
chemicals in the air on each fork.
If reptiles were awarded Oscars, the hognose might be top contender for best actor. When threatened, it sometimes flattens its neck
and head to resemble a miniature cobra. Other times it feigns death,
writhing about, rolling on to its back and remaining motionless with
mouth open and tongue hanging out until the threat has passed.
Sometimes, for added dramatic effect, it even will regurgitate a recent
meal or excrete feces.
Those characteristics are part of what makes the hognose intriguing
to Hoaglund. But its how the snake fits into the landscape, what it
says about ecosystem health, thats the real point of interest and the
chief purpose underlying her research. By learning more about the
hognose snake and its habitat needs, biologists will better understand
what the area was like at the time of European settlement. That will
help guide them as they undertake restoration projects in portions of
the Sand Dunes State Forest, work aimed at returning some of it to
better and more balanced ecological health.
We spend a lot of time trying to understand how animals use the
landscape, whats crucial in their landscape and whats not, Hoaglund
says. Theres a whole set of things that need to function together for
these species to persist.
For Hoaglund, who sometimes uses words like beautiful and
elegant when talking about snakes, its also part of a fascination
with some of the lesser appreciated aspects of the natural world, a
fascination she wasnt even aware of until her first term in college. As
a child growing up in the Midway area of St. Paul, with parents who
werent exactly the outdoorsy types, her few experiences with nature
were largely limited to visits to her grandparents farms. After high
school she first had thoughts of enlisting in the Navy as a step toward
becoming an astronaut, but ruled that out after further reflection. A
last-minute enrollee in the University of Minnesotas College of
Liberal Arts, she looked over the limited number of classes still open
and signed up for one called Intro to Fisheries and Wildlife Management because it fulfilled a requirement.
The first day in that class, the teacher gave an overview and it was
like an epiphany, she recalls. I realized, this is what I want to do.
Hoaglunds sense of wonder and excitement hasnt worn off; its
evident as she talks about her work to learn more about the natural
world, help others appreciate it and be good stewards.
Everyone deserves the chance to chase a snake through the grass or
help a turtle across the road, she says. Nature is as much a part of our
legacy as a great painting or a classic building. We need to take care
of it so we can pass it along.
The Minnesota DNRs Nongame Wildlife Program focuses on the
role animals that arent hunted play in healthy ecosystems critters
such as snakes and frogs, turtles, swans, loons, songbirds, bugs and
many more. It is supported almost entirely by grants and donations,
including those made at income tax time via the chickadee checkoff. More information can be found at www.mndnr.gov/nongame.

Youth archers harvest six deer at

Ripley and Lake Alexander Preserve
Cool, sunny conditions greeted youth participating in the 13th
annual youth archery deer hunt at the Camp Ripley Military Reservation north of Little Falls and the 11th annual youth archery hunt at
nearby Lake Alexander Preserve over the weekend.
Five deer were harvested at Camp Ripley and one at the Lake
Alexander Preserve for a success rate of 4 percent for the two-day
hunt. At Camp Ripley, 134 hunters participated; 15 hunters participated at the Lake Alexander Preserve.
Youth were paired with nonhunting mentors, said Beau Liddell,
Little Falls area wildlife supervisor for the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources. For some, this was the first time they had taken
a deer.
Logan Lunow of Belle Plaine harvested the first deer taken during
the Camp Ripley hunt, a male fawn. Brent Waytashek of Holdingford
took the largest deer, a 120-pound yearling buck. Joshua Monk of
Maplewood took the only deer at the Lake Alexander Preserve, a 113pound doe.
The Minnesota State Archery Association and the Minnesota Deer
Hunters Association were the primary hunt sponsors. The Department of Military Affairs, The Nature Conservancy and the DNR
provided logistical and planning support for the two hunts.

Ebola: what should

you really be afraid of
and be prepared for?
By Susan Johnson
Goodhue County
Health and Human Services
Ebola is constantly in the news
lately. Now with a new report of a
case in Texas, I am sure that folks
are wondering when it will hit their
town. While it is not easily transmittable, Ebola is a serious virus.
The Minnesota Department of
Health has a very strong health
care system and skilled public
health professionals who, according to the department, will make
sure a case does not threaten our
communities.
In terms of public health reporting, the Ebola virus has been in
the news more than the last big
influenza outbreaks of the H1N1
and the H5N1. But let us take into
consideration the possibility of
contracting Ebola in the United
States and compare it to the influenza that hits our community every year.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that Ebola poses
no substantial risk to the United
States general population. If theres
anything good about Ebola, it is
that a person is not contagious until
one has symptoms. This is the
opposite of the flu, where one can
be contagious in 24 hours, spreading the virus before experiencing
symptoms. Ebola is harder to
catch than influenza. A simple
sneeze at the wrong time can get
you influenza in a flash.
We should be taking more time
to prepare ourselves for an influenza season than we should be
worrying about Ebola. Influenza
and pneumonia are the eighth leading causes of death in the United
States. Every year an average of
200,000 people are hospitalized
due to the flu and its complications, with 3,000-49,000 each year
dying, a large portion of them chil-

dren.
As the preparedness person for
Goodhue County Health and Human Services, I am always trying
to inform folks on how to be ready
for whatever might hit them.
Some of my suggestions during the approaching influenza and
cold season are:
Always be aware where your
hands are. Respiratory viruses love
it when you rub your nose or your
eyes, or pick your teeth. They can
easily travel from your hands to
those mucous membranes and then
travel throughout your body.
When we read suggestions
from the terrible, horrible very bad
1918 flu, they included getting
plenty of sleep and fresh air. How
brilliant they were back then and
it is the same today. When we let
our systems get weak, the viruses
attack. Get plenty of sleep, eat well,
and you can never go wrong with
fresh air traveling through your
lungs and your home.
If you dont feel well, please
stay home. It is so easy to spread
those germs and get others sick.
Folks can carry the flu virus for a
day before they even begin to feel
sick.
If you are sick, stay away from
others including family members. Use your own towel, cover
your cough in your sleeve, wash
your hands, and get vaccinated.
Dont drink out of the same water
glass. Dont snuggle or kiss. Stay
in your room. Respiratory droplets (from sneezing and coughing) can travel up to six feet.

pandemic or disease outbreak:

DNR seeks citizen volunteers to

join fish species work groups
Volunteers are being sought to join five citizen-agency work groups
that will discuss how the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
manages fish. There will be individual work groups for bass, catfish,
panfish and walleye, and one that will focus on both northern pike and
muskellunge.
Volunteers may apply to one of the five groups. The application
period is open from Wednesday, October 1, to Wednesday, November 19.
Citizens can nominate themselves, said Don Pereira, DNR fisheries chief. These groups are about enhancing communication and
discussion between citizens and the agency. In recent years these
work groups have addressed angler concerns in detail.
Work groups of 10 to 15 people each include volunteers and DNR
staff who meet two to three times per year to discuss new research,
population and harvest trends, and fisheries management. Participants will be selected by the DNR and can choose to serve a term of
either two or three years. Meetings average four to six hours including
travel time. The groups are advisory and do not make decisions on
policy or fish management.
The work groups support effective management of the states
fisheries, Pereira said. We are seeking members who will reflect a
range of public interests in fish management including recreation,
effects on local economies, water quality, habitat and more.
For more information or to find an application form, see
www.mndnr.gov/fisheries/management.

DNR seeks designs

for Minnesotas
2015 walleye stamp
Wildlife artists can submit entries for the 2015 Minnesota walleye
stamp from Monday, Oct. 6, through Friday, October 17, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced.
The walleye stamp is sold along with hunting and fishing licenses or
as a collectable. Revenue from stamp sales is dedicated to purchasing
fish for stocking.
The contest offers no prizes and is open to Minnesota residents
only. The walleye must be the primary focus of the design, though
other fish species may be included in the design if they are used to
depict common interaction between species or are common inhabitants of Minnesota lakes and rivers.
Artists are not allowed to use any photographic product as part of
their finished entries. Winning artists usually issue limited edition
prints of the artwork and retain proceeds. Judging will take place 2
p.m. Thursday, October 23, at DNR headquarters, 500 Lafayette Road
in St. Paul.
Artists who want to submit entries should closely read contest
criteria and guidelines for submitting work, available from the DNR
Information Center, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155, by
calling the Information Center at 651-296-6157 or 888-646-6367, and
online at www.mndnr.gov/contests/stamps.html.

DNR urges motorists to be

alert for deer in the fall
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources urges motorists
to be especially alert this autumn to avoid vehicle/deer accidents.
Fall is an extremely active time for wildlife, especially deer, said
Col. Ken Soring, DNR enforcement director. Drivers need to remain
alert and drive with particular caution this time of year.
In the fall, deer population numbers are at a peak. Consequently, the
potential for drivers to encounter them on the roadways is greatly
increased. In addition, autumn is the breeding season for white-tailed
deer and reproductive urges cause the animals to become increasingly
mobile throughout October and November.
When you see deer along the roadside, reduce your speed and be
wary of any sudden movement, said Soring. If a deer crosses the
road, others may follow in its path.
While deer may be seen crossing roadways at any time of day, they
are most active at dawn and dusk. These are the same hours most
people are traveling to and from work. Drivers can avoid hitting deer
by slowing down during these hours and being particularly alert in
areas where deer typically cross.
