New Digitally Enhanced Power Analog controllers from Microchip offer digital power supply
flexibility with easy analog control loops
MCP19118/9 provide simple analog PWM control and configurable MCU in compact circuit solution;
industry's first PMus! compatible controllers "it# up to $%& operation
22 October 2!" #NA$DA%& M'(P) * Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller,
mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced its latest Digitally Enhanced Poer !nalog
"DEP!# controllers * the M'P!+!!, and M'P!+!!+ "M$P%&%%'(&#. They provide simple yet effective analog
P)M control for D$-D$ synchronous *uc+ converters up to ,-., ith the configura*ility of a digital M$/.
!nd they are the industry0s first devices to com*ine ,-. operation and PM1us2 communication interfaces.
These features ena*le 3uic+ poer-conversion circuit development ith an analog control loop that is
programma*le in the integrated '-*it PI$
4
M$/ core0s firmare. This integration and flexi*ility is ideal for
poer-conversion applications, such as *attery-charging, 5ED-driving, /61 Poer Delivery, point-of-load
and automotive poer supplies.
!long ith the rapidly groing popularity of digitally controlled poer supplies, due to their
configura*ility for a variety of operating conditions and topologies, poer system designers also have an
increasing need for the a*ility to report telemetry and conduct to-ay communication "typically for
monitoring and fault reporting#, via standard communication interfaces such as PM1us. !dditionally, the
recently released /61 charging specifications "/61 Poer Delivery and the /61 type $ connector# include
varia*le charging voltages, hich allo for rapid device charging, *ut add potentially difficult hardare
re3uirements.
1y integrating a supervisory microcontroller, the M$P%&%%'(& devices can create programma*le
poer supplies. 7ey system settings * such as sitching fre3uency "%-- +89 to %.: M89#, current limits and
voltage setpoints * can *e ad;usted on the fly during operation *y issuing rite commands to the registers in
the device. <ne design can then *e reused for additional applications, using firmare updates to change the
configuration, hich minimises design, production and inventory re3uirements across multiple platforms.
!dditionally, the integrated M$/ core can *e used to monitor other parts of the application to se3uence
startup operations= intelligently manage faults, under-voltage or *ron-out conditions= perform house+eeping
functions= ad;ust poer outputs in response to load re3uirements "such as *attery charging or /61 port
poer#= and assist ith the module0s external interfaces "monitoring or delivering signals to the user or
system#. )ith integrated linear regulators, P)M generators, !D$s, M<6FET drivers, analog error amplifiers
and control-loop compensation, the M$P%&%%'(& devices provide a very compact circuit solution. Properly
implemented, this system is capa*le of high conversion efficiency and excellent transient response for
reduced system poer losses, smaller heatsin+s and longer *attery life in porta*le applications. These DEP!
devices can also provide data over the I
>
$2 interface, using customised 6M1us or PM1us compati*le
commands.
?This is another example of the aard-inning innovation found in Microchip0s Digitally Enhanced
Poer !nalog product family,? said 1ryan @. 5iddiard, mar+eting vice president of Microchip0s !nalog and

in its D$-D$ controllers, and no other product solution provides this level of functionality for poer-
conversion, *attery-charging or 5ED-drive applications.?
De.elopment support
M$P%&%%'(& programming assistance is availa*le via the M'P!+!!! Design Analy/er and the

B IDE. 1oth of these softare tools are availa*le
today, via a free donload from the ?Documentation C 6oftare? section of the a*ove lin+s. !dditionally,
Application Note AN!3"! descri*es ho to use these tools.
Microchip0s full suite of standard development tools also support these M$P%&%%'(& DEP!
controllers, including the MP5!1 B Integrated Development Environment "IDE#, PI$+it2 D "part E
PF%:,%D-#, PI$+it 6erial !naly9er "part ED.%:,%>>#, and the MP5!1 B$' $ompiler.
A.ailability
The M'P!+!!, and M'P!+!!+ are *oth availa*le no for sampling and volume production, each in
G,----unit 3uantities. The M$P%&%%' is offered in a ,x, mm, >,-pin HFA pac+age, hile the M$P%&%%& is
availa*le in a GxG mm, >'-pin HFA pac+age.
