Student-Centered Learning
What is it?
Focus on active learning, learning by problem solving; how can effective learning be
promoted;
Students actively participate in discovery learning processes, they choose their individual
way of achieving and demonstrating the learning goals
Teacher is the facilitator of learning making it possible, by:
clearly stating the learning goals (e.g. target competencies, tasks to be performed,
problems to be solved),
providing multiple resources and learning stations,
helping the students to access and process information,
supervising the learning processes and organising the evaluation.
Students take own responsibility for their learning, by
being active knowledge seekers for solving the problem/task they have been given,
constructing the knowledge and solving the problem by making best use of the
provided resources and by interacting with the teacher and with the group.

Student-Centered Learning
Methods?

active learning, in which students solve problems, answer questions,
formulate questions of their own, discuss, explain, debate, or brainstorm
during class;
cooperative learning, in which students work in teams on problems and
projects;
inductive teaching and learning, in which students are first presented with
challenges (questions or problems) and learn the course material in the
context of addressing the challenges. Examples are inquiry-based learning,
case-based instruction, problem-based learning, project-based learning,
discovery learning, and just-in-time teaching.

Engine Room Simulator Group Exercises
Learning by exploring
We will exercise with the
simulator in every lesson.
We can plan together, what
we should to explore, try out
or experiment next.
Its similar to a game: the
winner is who successfully
completed the mission, not
causing hazardous situations,
and all alarms and
malfunctions well managed

Start the Engine Room Simulator
Switch through the displays, there are 3 types of displays:
Process flow diagrams (overview and detailed)
Control panels
Data monitoring (trend) diagrams
Identify:
the main components, flows, data indicators and controls in the
process flow diagrams
The control, monitoring, and alarm elements on the control panels

Switch between the control locations. There is a standard watchkeeping
procedure for that!
Operate the main engine from the bridge control lever
Start the engine, then slowly increase the engine speed
Watch the change of operating parameter on the control panel

Engine Room Simulator
Familiarization
Explore further simulator functions:
We can set up our training scenario, by:
Loading a prepared start situation
Setting the operating conditions (e.g. the ship resistance)
Setting all the engine room to Cold Start
We can save any situation as a new start situation
From the chosen start scenario, we can exercise with the simulator in various ways:
Starting and stopping the simulator at any time
Manoeuvring - changing the operation state or the operation mode
Finding the causes for alarms and taking correcting actions
Introducing malfunctions and checking the change of process data
Repairing and checking if the process data return to normal values
