6.3 Different incidence Angle Measurement
This experiment was performed to investigate the influence of incidence angle of the
reflectorless measurement on the accuracy of measured horizontal distance. In this test HDS
target was used (Figure 6-7). This was carried out using both the Trimble S8 and Leica 1201+
instruments. The horizontal distance at near and far targets to the total station were
measured in order to investigate its effect on the accuracy of the measurement by
calculating the root mean square error by equation 6.1.
In the field,
1) the instrument was first set at A ( see Figure 6-5 ) and the target was mounted at
B.
2) align the instrument perpendicular to the target (zero degree) position.
3) four points were marked by rotating the instrument at 10 degree interval (10, 20,
30, 40 degrees) from the perpendicular instrument position.
4) after the point was fixed, the total station was moved to HDS target position (see
Figure 6-6) and the HDS target on the position of total station
5) the first measurement was taken after alignment of the total station was fixed to
the perpendicular direction of the HDS target.
6) the next measurements were taken by rotating the HDS target to the marked
points
All measurements were taken in two modes, namely face left and face right.

The true distance was measured perpendicular from the instrument to the target
point.

6.4 Manual Method and Automatic Target Recognition Method
There are two measurement methods to facilitate surveying works. These are manual
(measuring or aiming of the measurement by the user) and automatic target recognition.
The main objective of the experiment was checking the precision of the two methods for

angle observation by calculating the standard deviation for each group of observation by
equations 6.2.
