INTRODUCTION
Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority health care needs of the population, thus should
be easily available in adequate quantities and in suitable dosage forms. The Essential Medicine List
[EML] is a tool that can help manage the purchasing and distribution of medicines and the selection
of quality assured and cost-effective products and thus one of the vital tools needed to improve and
maintain health. The NEDL was formulated after consultation with all the stakeholders in the health
care industry and based on the Ministry of Healths (MOH) Drugs List, which serves as the essential
drugs list for the MOH since 1983[1]
The NEDL price list currently consists of 287 NEDL items from 28 different types of pharmacological
grouping and 328 items of different packaging and volume. The list was extracted from the Public
Sector Medicine Wholesale Price List 2012 publication. The price were reported in minimum , median
and maximum price. From 287 NEDL items, only 267 items have price (93.03%). The list can be use
as reference or tools for price negotiation in the public sector procurement process.
