Comments From The Chair
David Gerrard
Baker Hughes
2012 ERG Chair
Dear Energy Rubber Group,
On behalf of your Board, I want to offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to each
of you and to your supporting organizations for contributing to the sustained growth of the Group in
2012, and for generating the momentum that we have built going into 2013! This year our Energy
Rubber Group has grown to well over 550 members, a substantial increase over last years already
historically high level despite the continued economic problems being felt across most of the world.
Year after year, the ERG provides fantastic value for its membership, in part because our board has
remained focused on the groups goals, but more importantly because individual members decide to
attend technical meetings, participate in a social networking activities, share presentation papers, ll
the need on the board or in a committee, and offer their ideas and energy for new endeavors.
2012 has been no different. Starting with the Winter Technical Meetings keynote address from
Rustom Mody, VP of Technology at Baker Hughes and continuing throughout each of the technical
presentations delivered in the spring and fall, our membership has stepped up and shared informative
technical and business-related content for our individual and collective benet. This years outstanding
Educational Symposium brought us back to the basics and in the process helped remind us of how far
we have come over the 30+ years as a respected and authoritative technical body. Our social activities
were noteworthy as well and offered something for everyone from bull riding in Dallas to sporting
clays, golng and ghost hunting in historic downtown San Antonio.
Early in the year we delivered our rst education outreach at the University of Houston. This program
introduced students and business professionals to the challenges and opportunities for elastomers
and other polymers in the energy sector. Our work with the University of Houston continued via our
E-Book, an invaluable technical resource which we must strive to continuously expand and update in
order to address tough technical challenges and educate new members entering the industry.
The E-book will be accessible to members via our new website which was completely updated from
top-to-bottom this past summer. The new website has been given great reviews, saving members
time when registering for meetings and activities, as well as for board and committee members
conducting group administrative activities. The data-based website maintains accurate record keeping
of memberships and event registrations, and allows members to update their own prole information.
We continued our support of the ACS Rubber Division this year by helping host its Spring Technical
Meeting in San Antonio and providing its keynote speaker, as well as continuing our substantial
nancial support of the student colloquium at the Fall Technical Meeting. Weve also extended the
breadth of our own scholarship program by adding a Veterans Education Scholarship to our portfolio.
This new scholarship will help educate deserving veterans and attract them to our industry. Members,
their families, as well as supporting organizations can contribute directly to educating veterans through
this fund via a link on our new website.
Looking back, 2012 has been another great year for the ERG and Ive thoroughly enjoyed being part
of it all. Again, congratulations and thanks to each of you for continually doing your part to sustain,
energize, and revitalize our Energy Rubber Group!!
Sincerely,
David Gerrard, PhD
