WELCOME TO GRACE COVENANT!

Thank you for joining us today! We are an historic Presbyterian

congregation offering traditional worship and multiple ministries
for persons of all ages. Please join us following worship for fellowship
in the Social Room. Thank you for turning off your cell phones,
pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices for the duration
of morning worship.

Preparation for Worship

“Our life-long nostalgia, our longing to be reunited with
something in the universe from which we feel cut off, to be on the
inside of some door which we have always seen from the outside,
is no mere neurotic fancy, but the truest index of our real
situation.”
~C. S. Lewis

“So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view.

Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has
gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us
to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in
Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has
committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore
Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal
through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to
God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in
him we might become the righteousness of God. ”

~2 Corinthians 5:16-21 NIV

A SERVICE FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
November 22, 2009 11:00 a.m.

GATHER TO GLORIFY GOD

PRELUDE Toccata in E Major Johann Ludwig Krebs
(1713-1780)

†CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 95:1-7

Pastor: O come, let us sing to the Lord;

let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
People: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
Pastor: In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
People: O come, let us worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.

†Please stand for these parts of the service.

†HYMN 485 (blue) To God Be the Glory To God Be the Glory

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION Rachel Butler

Righteous God,
you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord of all.
We confess that we have not bowed before him
and are slow to acknowledge his rule.
We give allegiance to the powers of this world
and fail to be governed by justice and love.
In your mercy, forgive us.
Raise us to acclaim him as ruler of all,
that we may be loyal ambassadors,
obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

†ASSURANCE OF PARDON

†ALLELUIA A. Gregory Murray, 1963

(Repeat the Alleluia refrain after the soloist)

GIVE THANKS TO GOD

OFFERING
ANTHEM I Will Extol Thee Jane Marshall
Chancel Choir (b. 1924)

I will extol thee, my God and King, and bless thy name for ever and ever.
Every day I will bless thee and praise thy name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall laud thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
Of the glorious splendor of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works, I will meditate.
Everyone shall proclaim the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of thy abundant goodness,
and shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all: and his compassion is over all that he has made.
Alleluia! Amen!
– from Psalm 145 (alt.)

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “The Apostles’ Creed” Chris Thomas

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth
on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall
come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the
life everlasting. Amen.

†GLORIA PATRI 579 (blue) Glory Be to the Father Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION AND LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
