WELCOME TO GRACE COVENANT!

Thank you for joining us today! We are an historic Presbyterian

congregation offering traditional worship and multiple ministries
for persons of all ages. Please join us following worship for fellowship
in the Social Room. Thank you for turning off your cell phones,
pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices for the duration
of morning worship.

Preparation for Worship

“The simple and glorious facts that God is a self-revealing God
and that he has revealed himself to man indicate the importance
of our minds.”
~John Stott

“Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news

about him spread through the whole countryside. He taught in
their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the
Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And
he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed
to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it was written:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good new to the poor.
He was sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
And recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat
down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on
him, and he began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is
fulfilled in your hearing.’ ”
~Luke 4:14-21

†CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 105 (selected verses)

Pastor: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name;

make known among the nations what he has done.
People: Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
Pastor: Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
People: Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek his face always.
All: Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles,
and the judgments he pronounced.
Praise the Lord.

†Please stand for these parts of the service.

†HYMN 466 (blue) O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Azmon

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Father, you have taught us through your word that in the past you spoke
through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
but in these last days you have spoken to us through your Son.
We confess that we have too often failed or refused to listen
to the truth that Jesus has brought into our lives.
Forgive us, O God, for turning away
from the one who has given us life eternal.
Show us Lord, the abundance Jesus has made available,
and help us to respond to the grace freely planted in our hearts.
We pray this in the name of our Savior, Jesus the Christ. Amen.

†ASSURANCE OF PARDON

†CHRISTMASTIME ALLELUIA based on Adeste Fideles

(All sing the Alleluia refrain after the organ introduction.)

GIVE THANKS TO GOD

OFFERING

ANTHEM Blest Be the God of Israel Michael Burkhardt

Chancel Choir (b. 1957)

Blest be the God of Israel, Who comes to set us free;

Who visits and redeems us, Who grants us liberty.
The prophets spoke of mercy, Of freedom and release;
God shall fulfill that promise And bring his people peace.

Now from the house of David A child of grace is giv’n;

A Savior comes among us To raise us up to heav’n.
Before him goes the herald, Forerunner in the way,
The prophet of salvation, The messenger of day.

On those who sit in darkness The sun begins to rise,

The dawning of forgiveness Upon the sinner’s eyes.
God guides the feet of pilgrims Along the paths of peace.
O bless our God and Savior With songs that never cease!
– text by Michael Perry, 1973.

†DOXOLOGY 592 (blue) Old Hundredth

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him, above, ye heavenly hosts;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth
on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall
come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the
life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION AND LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
