~~BUSINESS MEETING~~ The meeting was gaveled to order by Past- President Frank May, substituting for Queen Debbie Roessler who had the vapors, or something Queenly. The invocation was given on the fly by quick-thinking Kevin Reneau, who recounted how much Moraga Rotary meant to him after he found out about the service part.
Our visitors today included speaker Christine Deane and her husband and tech-rep Les, and Employee of the Month partner Larry Tesler of the C of C. Visiting Rotarian Mary Graves of the Cotati Rotary Club, who was in Moraga sitting with grandchildren, bought 20 of Cliffs books10 old and 10 new. She also left us a video produced by the Sonoma College Rotaract entitled No Mo Po, dealing with the eradication of Polio (you figure it out).
Announcements by Past-President Frank: the District Conference will be in Reno Oct 31- Nov 2. Cliff will be giving his Last Speech, but probably not for the Last Time. All members are encouraged to attend . . . . Saturday, November 15 is Rotary Day at Golden Gate Fields; act quickly to secure the one remaining ticket (and maybe more) from Frank if you havent yet done so. . . . On Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, the Town of Moraga, assisted by three Boy Scout Troops, will hold a memorial celebration at the Moraga Commons from 9 to 10 am. All are welcome.
Barbara Bruner reminded the members that the 317 Christmas stockings sewn this year will be decorated this Saturday beginning at 2:30 pm at 202 Glacier Drive in Martinez. There is room for more signups; contact her to participate. She thanked Ron Mucovich in particular for allowing us to use Trinity Hall. Volunteers to mark, pin, and cut the stockings were: Louise Schopke, Roger Gregory, John Erickson, Gary Irwin, Linda May, Dick Vance, Frank May, Joan Ulrich, and Alka Mulakalori (Fremont Rotary). The highly skilled seamstresses (yeah, kinda sexist, I know) were Mary Sue Erickson, Linda Campbell, Ann Damaschino, Cliff Dochterman, and Carol Irwin.
Last Saturday was the dinner at the Soda Center honoring the 40 th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town. About 140 people attended, including Moraga Rotarians Lad Lynch, Roger Poynts, and Gary Irwin. Resolutions of congratulations presented by the County Board of Supervisors and the Joint state legislature were received on behalf of the Town by Sara Cory, the widow of first Mayor Mike. Volunteers that served on the various Town organizations were recognized. The three living members of the first Town Council, Barry Gross, Sue McNulty Rainey, and Merle Gilliland, reminisced about the shock when they realized they would have to start up a Town government from Nothing, and how they laid the foundation for a successful city. The evening was a strong testimonial to the Town that benefits greatly from the spirit of its many volunteers.
The dedication of the bench in remembrance of Mary Elena Dochterman on the 7 th tee at Moraga CC is scheduled for 5 pm on Monday, October 27. The entrance to the 7 th tee from Augusta Drive is adjacent to 785 Augusta. Hint: the white--painted street pedestrian crosswalk leads right to it.

wedding anniversary, and Rogers birthday recently. Herb Wehmeyers and Peter Metzgers birthdays will be recognized, with compound interest, when they next attend. . . . . ~~PROGRAM~~
Our speaker today was Christine Deane, currently the appointed incumbent for Area 2 of the County Board of Education. Christine has lived in Burton Valley for 37 years with her husband Les, and their three children all graduated from Campolindo HS. She has taught grades 1-7 in county schools for more than 25 years, and has earned her National board Certification for Excellent Teaching Practice. She was appointed to the County Board of Education to fill a vacant seat, and is currently a candidate for the four year term.
Many of us were unaware that the County even had a separate Board of Education, and what functions they performed outside of the eleven school districts in the county. Some of the functions they perform are to advocate for education on the State and Federal levels, to resolve contentious transfer and expulsion cases, to approve curricula, to approve charter schools, to provide support to beginning teachers, to select the Teacher of the Year, and to work with school districts to organize, staff, and fund Regional Educational Programs which provide specialized learning that is in demand. For example, some high schools offers classes, some for college

credit, in Digital Arts/Web Design, Auto Shop, Graphic Arts, Journalism, Architectural Design, Environmental Science, Biotech, Computer Science, and source data collection. Courses in Hotel and Restaurant services are offered in concord. Funding for these classes may be a problem in the future, however.
