Geometry- Circle and its properties
by Total Gadha - Sunday, 12 August 2007, 01:48 AM

Before all the CAT 2007 aspirants give up on me, here is another big chapter on geometry to whet their appetite for CAT quant. CAT 2008 aspirants are also
advised to assimilate the following theorems and results into their system as the present chapter covers one of the most important topics in MBA entrance exams-
circles. Time and again, I have been told that students either have a knack for geometry or they dont. During my three years as a quant instructor, I have
seen many instructors and students who could not make head or tail of geometry in the beginning, but who worked hard at memorizing and practicing all the
theorems and slowly became very good at it, and developed the required visualization powers. One thing is for sure; if you aspire to do an MBA, you are surely
not escaping from geometry. And here comes one more heavy geometry dose- circles.

Hi Dipti,
Let O be the centre. The angle between the tangents, PG and PT, is = 180 - angle GOT
Angle GOT has to be found by the conditions given.

I just went through this article and I think, as of yet, its my favourite!! There are many times when I would use equation to arrive at the answers (like in the problem which is the example for the rule
AP x PB = CP x PD), but you've have solved them so elegantly and with such few steps!! Please do keep 'em coming!!

Hi TG,

When I appeared for my CBSE Xth std exam (in 1998), I studied from the so-called "old syllabus". The new syllabus came into effect somewhere in 2004. I am studying from online NCERT textbooks of ninth and tenth standards and I am finding
them a lot different from the old books. A few theorems like that of the ratio in which the centroid divides the median and problems like the Simpsons line are missing. Also he language seems to be a lot more informal making it seem less
rigorous. I am unable to get old syllabus books from the bookstores or from my school libraries.

I am currently out of India and will be returning only after July. Can I continue to study from the online textbooks? Please help
Vipul

Aditya
Just see the figure attached below:
You are to just (I hope you can) visualise or realise that yellow triangle is equilateral and thus yellow + green area is 1/6th of circle with radius 5.
Now calculate whatever area you want to.
[prerequisite - you must know how to calculate area of equilateral triangle of given side and area of circle with given radius.]

Re: Geometry- Circle and its properties
by Arpit Jain - Monday, 17 October 2011, 03:07 AM

Sir, in this question
I am getting answer as 67.5 degree.
angle(ADB)=90 (angle in semicircle)
angle(DOB)=180-angle(AOD)=135
now,in triangle OBD
angle(OBD)=1/2angle(AOD)=22.5 (angle subtended by arc at the center is double the angle subtended by it at any point on the remaining part of the circumference)
so,angle(BDO)=180-(135+22.5)=22.5
no,
angle(ADB)=90 (angle in semicircle)
so angle(ADO)=angle(ADC)=90-angle(ODB)=90-22.5=67.5 degree.
Sir,what am I doing here?
Please clarify..

From a point outside a circle of radius 15 cm, two tangents are drawn to the circle. The angle between the tangents is 74. Find the area of the triangle formed by the tangents and the chord joining
the points of contact. (sin37 = 0.6)
a)384 cm2
b)96 cm2
c)192 cm2
d)225 cm2

Re: Geometry- Circle and its properties
by Anindya Basu - Friday, 20 June 2014, 03:38 PM
sin 37 = 0.6
=> cos 37 = 0.8
1/2 of chord = radius x cos 37 = 15 x 0.8 = 12
length of tangent x sin 37 = 12
=> length of tangent = 12/0.6 = 20
=> height of target triangle = 20 x cos 37 = 16
Area of triangle = 1/2 x 24 x 20 = 192
