KAPSTONE PAPER CORPORATION (Formerly MeadWestvaco), Charleston, SC 2004-10/2013
Director of Finance, KapStone 2008-2013 KapStone purchased the paper mill and sawmill from MeadWestvaco; Assisted MeadWestvaco Corporate with the carve-out Financial Statements in SAP Identified and separated shared activities with sister divisions located in Charleston, SC. Collaborated with MeadWestvaco Shared Services on the one-year transition service agreement and transition of general accounting and payroll activities to the mill. Provided financial modeling and analysis for completion of the Reciprocal Operating Agreement between the MeadWestvaco Chemical Plant and the paper mill. Participated in the renegotiations that ultimately increased the cross charge from the plant to the mill by $1MM annually. Developed accounting procedures to ensure the mill was GAAP compliant for SEC reporting. Provided financial oversight to the implementation of all new systems during 2009, brought the mill to SOX compliance by year-end; earned a clean audit report by the end of 2010 while reducing the closing cycle from 4 12-hour days to 3 8-hour days. Built an Excel-based Mill Financial Model that greatly simplified and standardized the following processes while improving accuracy and visibility: The month-end results call summary, monthly and quarterly EBITDA bridges, annual budget, quarterly forecast and what-if scenarios outside the forecast process. Implemented the model at two sister mills; revised closing processes at one mill eliminating 2 FTE days of closing activity. Consolidated and streamlined the customer rebate process for the three mills and implemented stronger Sarbanes-Oxley controls. Developed a robust sales report package for a business segment which eliminated 8 hours of manual computations each month, significantly improved accuracy and provided visibility to sales by region, customer rankings by region, QTD, YTD and trended data and overall top 25 rankings. Created a new wood sourcing summary that included a reconciliation of fiber purchases versus fiber consumption in the P&L. The increased visibility resulted in elimination of the highest price source with annualized savings of $3MM. The summary facilitated improved forecasting and budgeting processes.

Director of Finance, MeadWestvaco 2006-2008 In addition to the controller duties below, 1 of 4 local team members responsible for the marketing and sale of the mill; Participated in presentations to various suitors, providing all financial analysis and schedules as needed. Coordinated financial needs of the Corporate M&A group and Corporate Controller Office. In addition to selling the mill, the mill was folded under another division of the company; Modified the month-end reports to meet the requirements of the new organization. Participated in standardizing financial policies and practices, mentored new controllers at other mills. Implemented a formal Balance Sheet Review with the Financial Shared Services each month. Developed sensitivity analysis for customer pricing, wood, energy and raw material cost.
Mill Controller, MeadWestvaco 2004-2006 Mill was turned into a stand-alone division within MeadWestvaco. The business analysis group became the accounting function, consisting of 2 engineers and 1 financial analyst. Built a new Finance / Accounting Function from scratch. Assigning staff members as formal liaison to groups of operating cost centers. Developed a full P&L, modified cash flow, Fiber, Energy and Raw Material summaries for month-end, QTD and YTD analysis. Analyzed spending throughout the mill, developed account definitions and educated entire mill on where to charge expenditures. Implemented a full bottoms-up budgeting process with ownership at the cost center level. Revised Finished Goods inventory standards for the three product lines correcting one that was understated by 15% and another overstated by 15%. The change supported price increases. Provided financial support and analysis to Six Sigma, cost reduction and Capital Projects teams.
