The Hope For The Sick World Or (Heal The World)

Introduction:
Human beings have conquered space and have set their foot even on the moon. They are still soaring high in the realms
above, yet inside of them they are rotten and confusion confounded. Social evils like child labour, dowry system,
unemployment flourish every passing moment. And with the accumulation of diabolic weapons humans are standing on
the brink of a precipices. Who can save the ‘World’ from this terrible catastrophe? Is there a ray of hope? Here we, the

teachers and students of Church Park present to you….“The hope for the sick world”. (or “Heal The World”)
(Through a classical dance the character ‘World’ can be introduced. Here the World is the main dancer and there could be
a group of dancers with her. As the song gets over the other dancers exit except ‘World’. She walks in an aesthetic
manner.
The off stage voice: Here is our World but have we ever given time to look at her? Have we ever thought of the problems
and evils that afflict her and the sufferings that the poor and marginalized people are subjected to? Let us have a look at
her people. (World exits)

Scene: 1
(Time: Morning, Set: house courtyard. A soft flute music will help to create the atmosphere. Three children (Balu,
Suman, Balaji) come in and begin to play. They are happy and content.)
Sunder: let us play, shall we?
Suman: ya.. come on start it. Yesterday you could not…..
Balu: Suman , it is your turn.
(Balu’s mother brings her husband and makes him lie on the bed.)
Suman: I am sure I am going to take it.
Sundari: (mother of Balu) Balu! Finish your game and get ready, its time for your school.
Balu: Coming Maa! Hey do it fast, we have to go.
Suman: Ow….. I got it.
Sunder: Come Suman lets go home. Balu see you in the school. (Sunder and Suman exit talking among
themselves)
Balu: Ma! Where are my books? (He takes his books and exits)
Sunderi: How long can we go on like this? Today there is nothing for the lunch. Balu went to school empty
stomach. I have got some 10 rupees from Mrs. Rekha for your medicine.
Niraj: Tomorrow I will go to work.
Sunderi: No. You are not going to work unless you get well completely.
Niraj: I can’t see both of you suffering like this and how long will you…
(Khalid, friend of Niraj comes in. Sunderi exits.)
Khalid: How are you today? I am sorry I could not come for the last three days, I was a bit busy with my work.
Niraj: Forget about ‘Me’ (coughs)! I can’t see ‘them’ suffering. I can’t..
Khalid: Why what’s the problem? How is Balu?
Niraj: Balu is alright, his mother is also ok, but there is no food for them! I am sick for three months and
whatever we had stored is all over.
Khalid: I say, send your son for work. There are many children working in Shivakashi and supporting their
families. Balu also can do, until you get well.
Niraj: What are you talking about? I can’t let Balu….
Khalid: Why? What’s wrong in sending your child for work. Let him learn some thing that will help him in
future.
Niraj: No, now is the time for him to play, study and enjoy his child hood. I don’t want to send him to work
and what will he get after all? At the most they will give only five rupees a day.
Khalid: You don’t worry! I will find a way. Ok, then, see you. I have to meet the landlord, he has asked for me,
hope there is nothing wrong. (exits, curtain drops)

Scene:2
(Children are working. They are in dirty cloth, tired etc. one corner of the stage the owner of the factory Mr. Murugan is

sitting at his table. The flute is played and the curtain opens)

Mahim: Balu, how is your father? Any news from home? Did your mother come to see you?
Balu: I don’t know. She has not come to see me for two weeks. I hope nothing has happened to my….(Balu’s
mother comes in. She looks at her son, but could not speak to him. She goes to the owner to ask his
permission to meet her son.)
Murugan: What do you want now?
Sunderi: Sir, can I talk to my son, Balu. (She cries) His father is no more Sir, let me tell him this.
Murugan: Go, and do it fast, remember it is his working time ands not a time to put up a drama. (She goes to Balu
and Balu comes and hugs his mother. Both of them cry out loudly. The owner sees this and shakes his
head and goes out.)
Balu: Maa. How is Papa? Did you get medicine for him? Tell him I will come to see him soon.
Sunderi: (Hiding her face, cries.) Balu! Your daddy…
Balu: What happened to Daddy? What…
Sunderi: He is no more….(Mahim looks at them) you don’t need to work any more come with me.
Balu: No. I won’t I will work here and you stop working in other’s house. You go Ma, other wise the owner
will send me out.(Sunderi Cries and goes out)
: ( Balu Continues to work while crying, Mahim comes to him.)
Mahim: Balu! Don’t cry. (Balu stops crying.) I am feeling hungry and I did not have anything in the morning.
Balu: (He goes and get the tiffin from his bag and gives it to Mahim.) Take it.
(Mahim begins to eat and looks here and there so that no one sees him Mr. Murugan, the owner of the cracker factory
returns and shouts)
Mr. Murugan: What the hell are you doing? This is not the time for you to chat. You are suppose to finish the work.
Last two days you haven’t done enough. Hey…hey ..What are you hiding? Show me…show me…
what….
Mahim: Nothing Sir…(frightened)
Murugan: Nothing! But you are hiding? Show me…
(Mahim tries to hide the food, but Murugan goes and takes it from his hand)
Mr. Murugan: So that’s it. You are …..
(Mahim looks helplessly. Murugan takes the food form his hand and throws it to the ground and starts beating him
angrily.)
Mr. Murugan: Tomorrow onwards you are not coming to work here. I don’t need you, and take this twenty rupees for
this week’s work. (exits)
(Mahim goes to a corner of the stage and cries, Balu goes to him and consoles him. Lghts off and the set is arranged, a
table, chairs etc for the next scene.)

Scene: 3
(Set: inside room. Mr. Sanker and his wife Mrs. Rupa waiting for the bride Rakesh and his parents to come and see
Shikha. Rakesh is from a rich higher caste family. Full light)
Rupa: It is already time, but they are not yet here. Hope they come or else we won’t be able to face our
neighbours.
Sanker: I will go to the street and find if they are coming. (exits)
Rupa: Shikha! You better get ready they might come anytime.
Sanker: (Comes running.) Rupa, I saw a car coming at the end of the street. I am sure they are coming. Have
you kept the water and towel. Shikha, where is she? Is she ready?
Rupa: You sit here I will see that Shikha….. (exits)
(Rakesh and his father Manilal and mother Runu come in. Sanker is exeited, he makes all the efforts to please them.)
Sanker: Come in, please, come in. Please take your seats. (Three of them sit) We are really fortunate to have
you here. Rupa!
Manilal: We don’t have much time. Therefore just show your daughter and finish the business. Where is your
daughter?
Sanker: She is coming, I’ll see…(exits)

Runu: First you ask if they are willing to give all that we ask. For heaven’s sake don’t say you like the girl or
not.
Manilal: I know what to talk and you (looking at Rakesh) don’t open your mouth.
(Sanker comes and behind comes Rupa and her daughter Shikha.)
Manilal: Oh, I forgot to ask you. What about the list we have sent to you, You are ready to…..
Sanker: Yes. But it is…….
Manilal: No ‘but’. If you are ready to pay all that then we sit here or else we….
Sanker: Please..
Manilal: We haven’t come here to bargain like in a fish market. Are you ready or not.
Sanker: I will pay but please give me sometime. Let the marriage get over I will gradually give you all that you
ask for.
Runu: Once the marriage is over do you think it is going to work?
Sanker: I promise. I will.
Manilal: But half of it you must pay me before the marriage.
Sanker: I will. I promise.
Manilal: Then next week fix the marriage date.
(Three of them exit.)
Rupa: What have you done? Do you think you will be able to…
Shikha: I don’t want to get married.
Sanker: You don’t talk. As long as I am alive I know what to do and what not to do.
Rupa: Take these. (The background music should be louder now. She removes her ornaments and gives them
to Sanker) (Curtain drops)

Scene: 4
( Set: The house of Shekhar. The mother-in-law is lying on the bed. Shikha is sweeping the room.)
Runu: Clean it properly. And what about washing the clothes? did you do it?
Shikha: I will do….
Runu: ‘I…w…i…ll’ your father also said the same thing. What is this? Did you see there is a lot of dirt there?
Don’t say you can’t see. We have no money for the doctor. (Shikha goes on cleaning) Can’t you hear
what I say?
Shikha: (looks at her) please tell me what I can do.
Runu: You are asking me what you can do?
Manilal: (Comes in) What is going on early in the morning? Oh..its you again!! Can’t you do your work without
shouting? (looking at Shikha)
Shikha: I did not say anything.
Runu: Am I mad that I talk alone? What are you trying to prove?
Manilal: See, I am talking to you! The day you stepped into this house the peace of the family has been ruined.
Your father, that liar should have known better than……..
Shikha: Don’t drag in that innocent man here. You can call me anything you want.
Runu: What cheek….? Raising your voice against elders! (slaps her)
Manilal: I think we must do something about it.
(Runu and Manilal exit. The flute music should be louder and the lights gradually fade. Shikha sits on the floor and cries
loudly. The curtain drops.)

Scene: 5
(Mr. Anand’s family is known for their traditional way of life. He always uses Khadi. He is a nice person and loves his
wife Mrs. Rukmani and daughter Kakoli. Mrs. Rukmani is a house wife. Kakoli is a teenager, she is studying in one of the
well known Colleges in the city. In the course of time she is influenced by the Western culture, due to the media. And
wishes to become a model in future.)
(Set: inside a room. Mrs. Rukmani comes in. She is getting ready to perform ‘puja’. Both of them sit for the morning
prayer. Kakoli comes in, with books in her hands and she also joins in the prayer. After the prayer.)
Rukmani: Kakoli, did you have your breakfast?
Kakoli: No, Mummy. I think I will get late for the class.

Rukmani: Then hurry up and have your…
Kakoli: I will have only tea and when I came back from the College….(She sits at the dining table.)
Rukmani: I suppose you know we are invited for…
Kakoli: Oh, ya. If we don’t go then aunty will be angry. (Mr. Anand comes in. He is in Dhoti and Kurta, middle
aged man.)
Anand: Kakoli, you are still….
Kakoli: What is the time Papa.
Anand: Its 8.15, I hope you’ll get the bus. If you are late for the class and your head mistress calls me I am
not…..
Rukmani: Do fast..
Kakoli finishes her breakfast half and leaves the place in hurry. Rukmni, while cleaning the table.)
Anand: (Looking at the News paper) There is a nice programme tomorrow at Kala Darsha. Shall we…
Rukmani: I like to go for the programme, but I don’t know about your daughter. She does not care any more about
any cultural programme. She is……..
Anand: These days I too find Kakoli is going away from our culture and she behaves in funny way. I can’t
understand why….
Rukmani: Its nothing but the result of MTV and FTV. I told you not to get the cable connection, but you did not
listen to me.
Anand: But there are lot of good things in cable TV and I thought they could be helpful for Kakoli’s growth.
She is doing very well in her college and her teacher told me that Kakoli is very good in English.
Rukmani: That does not mean that she has to listen to English songs always and I don’t understand how she
enjoys all the noise.
Anand: Forget! I am going to the market, I will be back soon and then go to the office. (exits, lights off for few
seconds and then full lights)
(Kakoli with her four friends in her house. All the girls should portray that they are followers of western culture. Loud
heavy rock music is on at the begging of the scene.)
Purni: Come on (looking at Khoshbu) there is nothing like rock and heavy rock.
Dipika: Hey! You are right. Actually we should play this kind of music early in the morning to make us wake
up. (One who plays this character should be little bit fat and short.) (She dances and talks.)
Nilima: How was the programme you went for yesterday?
Kakoli: oh, it was nice and Smita danced very well. She has become a professional dancer. I suppose you
remember Smita!
Dipika: Smita?
Nilima: You are talking about that girl who used to dance during our college functions?
Kakoli: Ya… now you won’t be able to go near her.
Purni: Come on… What is there in that Bharat Natyam. It’s like some one crying and another prancing. And
you are…..
Nilima: Shall I ask something Kakoli, Isn’t it funny to wear this sari of your all the time. Don’t you find
difficult? Hey! we are no more in our grand father’s age. Things have changed and don’t you see how
the modern girls dress and move!
Purni: By the way, I have a news for you all.
All: What’s it?
Purni: Anybody wants to get a job as a model? There is good opportunity and you get a cool amount.
Dipika: I want to, but you know, my height won’t allow me. I trying my best to become tall….forget. I’m sure
Kakoli will be able to make it. Why don’t you try Kakoli.
Kakoli: Me? Are you joking or..
Dipika: I am serious.
Kakoli: No. My dad will not allow me. If he is at home he doesn’t even allow me to watch the MTV and…
Purni: Cool it baby! Forget about your dad and you are a modern girl. You are grown up, you can well decide
for yourself. Can’t you?
Kakoli: My dad’s friend is getting me a job in a school and I think I’ll do well.

Dipika: There come on you! You think you will do well, but mind you this kind of chance come once in a life
time. Grab it baby!
Kakoli: What ever you say I won’t!
Dipika: That’s up to you, but if you want then you can contact this address. (hands over a visiting card.) Hey
I’ve go to push off and see you tonight at the disco. Kakoli, are you coming?
Kakoli: No.
Purni: Ok then I have to go—bye… (They all exit)
(Kakoli alone in the stage, she takes out the visiting card and looks at it. Her father comes in.)
Anand: What are you doing alone? When did your friends leave?
Kakoli: Just now.
Anand: What is it that you are holding?
Kakoli: My friend was telling me there is an opportunity for a nice job. The salary is good and there is a lot of
scope for name and fame.
Anand: What is the work that you are going to do there? It will be better for you to go and work instead in the
school.
Kakoli: Papa, I want to tell you something. I want to work as a model. I am sure to get the chance. I hope you
won’t stop me Papa!
Anand: I don’t think that is going to do any good for you and therefore you are not going to join there.
Kakoli: Why not? Today many girls are going for it and they are doing very well and they are standing on their
own feet. I want to have a better future.
Anand: I’ve said No, and here after if you are going to do anything with regard to this then you are going to be
responsible for yourself. Never say that I haven’t given…….
Kakoli: Just one chance daddy……..
Anand: I don’t know (exits angrily)
Kakoli: (Makes a phone call) Hello! Sir I am Kakoli Anand from Chennai. May I know when is the interview
for the…Ya….Tomorrow? Thank you Sir. (Curtain drops)

Scene: 6
(Set: a studio office. The manager of the studio is sitting on a chair, some men are in the room. Kakoli comes in she is
wearing sari, she is nervous.)
Kakoli: May I come in Sir?
Manager: yes!
Kakoli: Good morning Sir.
Manager: So you want to be a model? Did you read all that we have given in the advertisement?
Kakoli: Yes Sir.
Manager: I don’t think so, if you had read them, you wouldn’t have come in this dress.
Kakoli: Sir, Please, I will do my best to fulfil your expectation. I want to be a model.
Manger: Well, I see that you are eager and have the desire…..
Kakoli: yes Sir. Just give me one chance Sir.
Manager: Are you ready to work today onwards? We have a project which have to be completed by tomorrow. If
you are ready then we can….
Kakoli: yes Sir.(eagerly) Yes. What have I to do?
Manager: The director will instruct you. You better get ready and remember if you are able to make this project a
success, you will be made permanent in our company.
Kakoli: Thank you Sir. I’ll try my best.

Manager: Mr. Bhalchandra! This girl wants to work with us, see if you can make use of her in our project.
Director: Ok Sir. Then we will be able to complete the project.
Manager: Ok then, All the best. (exits)
Director: What is your name you said?
Kakoli: Kakoli Anand.
Director: That’s good, now better get started. (he shows some paper to her) There is our green room you can go

there and get ready and come here by the time I will call the make up man. (She goes out)
Director: Sharon, get ready with the set and call the make up man. (They all begin to arrange the set. could bring
a chair, remove the table, etc.)
Kakoli: (Comes in a modern dress. This is the first time she is wearing such a dress and thus she feels
uncomfortable.) Sir! I am ready.
Director: (Goes around her) Hmm. That’s cool. Hey just give a touch up here. (The make up man comes with
make up set. The director arranges his camera and then calls for Kakoli.) Are you ready?
Kakoli: Yes Sir.
Director: Ok then, come here. Do you know how to give a pose?
Kakoli: (keeps silence, and feel uncomfortable about her dress)
Director: Fine. I will show you. ( He makes a few sensual postures) See if you can.
Kakoli: (She feels uncomfortable yet she tries to give some postures.)
Director: Yaa…that’s cool stay like that….Just a min…(He clicks the camera for some time.) Ok. I will give
these photographs to Manager and you can come to see him next week. (Kakoli looks nervous) you
don’t worry….I…..
Kakoli: Thank you Sir. (exits)
(Lights off and every thing is removed form the stage for the next scene.)

Scene: 7
(Set: road. Kakoli is returning after working. She is completely a modern girl. As she is going some boys and girls come
form the opposite side of the stage.)

Forget. Lets go to the club.
(Kakoli is worried and she feels shy after listening to the comments. She is thinking what to do. There appears a devil.
She should be in black robe and red lips, if possible two horns etc.)
Devil: Haaaa Haaaaa (loud laughter and background music. Addresses Kakoli) Why are you worried? You are
now a famous model, you have money, name, fame! What else do you want?
Kakoli: I don’t know what I want, but I am missing something. Can you..
Devil: Haaa Haaaa.
Kakoli: Can you give me peace? Please give me peace. I don’t want all these. I want to be simple. Please take
all these away from me.
Devil: Haaaaa Haaa. You need peace Haaaa. (Takes out a rope and throws in-front of Kakoli.) Take it…. Take
it…your peace is here…take it…
Kakoli: No, Not that! I know you can’t give me peace. (Seeing a Lady director coming the devil exits.)
Lady dir: To whom are you talking?
Kakoli: There was somebody just now where is she?
L. Dir: No, there is no body. Tell me what is your problem?
Kakoli: I am cheated by those media snakes and I have nothing with me. I thought I could get name, fame,
money and I got them but I have lost respect and peace. Please help me!
L. Dir: Yes, that is the case for most of the girls who are working there, but come let us use these means of
communication for Our (women) liberation and tell the world that we too are human beings and we are
not commodities for their pleasure.
Kakoli: Are you….
L. Dir: I am a director and I want people who can work for the liberation. We can save many girls. Come!
(Curtain drops)
(The curtain opens and the world is shown in a shadow play with thorns all around and the moon slowly rises. Then the
back light off and the first verse of ‘The world stands in need…..” is sung with a dance in front and as the dancers recede
the World is being carried on a stretcher by four persons. The four persons are the four planets. They exit and the curtain
drops.)

Scene: 8
(The hospital scene is set up and when the curtain opens Dr. Logic comes and settles on the chair and from the other side
Miss. Deafist, the nurse enters.)
Miss. Dea: The patient will be in anytime doctor (pauses and the doctor nodes his head) I think I heard a
sound. Listen! (goes and looks out.)
Dr. Logic: Miss Deafist you must use your head. The message conveyed is that the world is in a very sorry plight
and that they send him to this hospital for treatment. The world can be cured if we, but use our heads.
Miss. Dea: How can three people put the world right? It’s just impossible.
Dr. Logic: I don’t intend to do it alone. I will bring in a specialist, (chuckles his chin) ya…. Dr. Science, is the
right person to cure the world and if he fails to do so then I’m sure nobody can do it.
Miss. Dea: Oh!.. That Dr. Science can’t do a thing like that. I bet he will not succeed. (The door bell is heard)
Dr Logic: Could you see who is there?
(Miss Deafist goes out and comes in, along with her Dr. Science enters into the stage.)
Miss. Dea: Sir, Here comes Dr. Science!
Dr. Logic: Good evening Dr. Science.
Dr. Scie: Good evening Dr. Logic. (Shaking hands)
Dr. Logic: Please take your seats, I was just talking about you with Miss Deafist.
Dr. Scie: About Me! Haa… what about?
Dr. Logic: Well, I was expecting you on my birthday, but you…..
Dr. Scie: I’m sorry, I couldn’t make it. Actually that same evening …..
Dr. Logic: No excuses please. You big shots, once get involved in your work even forget your wife and…..
Dr. Scie: Hey I forgot to tell you that just now I have with me all the answers to any problems.
Dr. Logic: Are you joking or…
Dr. Scie: In this case I am serious. Did you read the news paper? These days I have with me……….
(A loud noise is heard, four persons bring World on a stretcher. The world is sick, hurt and not able to move. Her face is
pale, blood stain on her body etc. The whole stage should be stirred up, Dr. Logic goes running and asks
them to lay World on a table. A soft back ground music could help to build up to the climax.)
Dr. Logic: (Showing the place) Here, here, careful…. Miss. Deafist please bring some water and….
Dr. Scie: What’s wrong? Dr. Logic would you mind coming this side for a sec…
Dr. Logic: Just a minute! Miss. Deafist, clean the blood stain. (goes to the front corner of the stage and discuses
with Dr. Science) Tell me….Can you …
Dr. Scie: Do something, Right? Ya. This is nothing, I have all the answers for any problems. I am sure my
penicillin, Sulpha drugs or antibiotic pills surely work here. If that does not then I am sure the radium
treatment and surgery will cure the World. You don’t worry.
Dr. Logic: Then please see her and do something.
Dr. Scie: Let me have a look at her. Then I….…..( World cries loudly, both the Doctors ran to her)

Miss. Dea: Sir! She is ………


Dr. Scie: Don’t worry World! Everything will be alright. It’s just a matter of Time.
Miss. Dea: Time?…….. Years and years have elapsed and yet the World is no better, rather getting worse. Please
don’t wait for time Sir, that will never ……
Dr. Logic: When I last saw her she was better than this and every moment she is getting worse.
Dr. Scie: Well let us not waste time and get started logically. Could you sit for a while World. (He helps World to
sit) Tell me where is the problem and when did it start?
World: Pain all over. My Moscow has scarlet fever, I have a broken China, I have an occulation in my Berlin.
You all are present, yet not able to find what is the reason for my pain! I have growing pains in the
middle east.
Dr. Scie: Hot flaming Pains?
World: No…! cold war pains everywhere.
Dr. Scie: What else? Tell me everything……just everything. (All three of them eagerly listen to World. Mss.
Deafist is busy cleaning the bloodstains.)

Miss. Dea: Sir, She is getting worst. I think we should not take more time.
Dr. Logic: Dr. Science, if you can do some thing then do or else tell me we will call for some one else.
Dr. Scie: I think you better call for some one else. I am sorry. (exits)
Dr. Logic: You should have know it before hand that you won’t be able to….I just don’t understand you way of
working. Do you know if world dies what will happens to us? Where shall we live? (He takes the phone
and makes a call) hello! Hello! This is Dr. Logic speaking can I talk to Dr. Pleasure? (Keeps silence)
Dr. Pleasure? See world is in a bad condition, could you come at once? Please leave all your job and
come at once. Nurse, bring oxygen and keep it here.
(Pleasure comes in running)
Pleasure: What happened to her? Oh…No… this is indeed very bad. I don’t know what I can do. Any way I will
try.

(There could be a dance to portray the worldly pleasure, It should not be classical music and dance. After the dance..)
Pleasure: World! World! Do you hear me?
Miss. Dea: Sir, I think she is in comma. She does not respond. (pleasure exits)
Dr. Logic: Oh, No. That is the end of our existence too.
Miss. Dea: Sir, there is one person who can help in this situation. And that is LOVE. Please call for love and I am
sure she can work miracle. (Curtain drops)

Scene: 9
(Set: The office of Mr. Murugan. He is busy doing account. His friend Mr. Thomas comes in. He is from a Christian
family and by virtue is a good man.)
Thomas: Hi…. Murugan! How are you?
Murugan: Hey, how are you. It’s been a long time since I have met you? How are your wife and child?
Thomas: They are doing well. But I was surprised to see….
Murugan: Hey don’t be surprised by seeing my business flourishing. It’s all my hard work and…
Thomas: Your hard work or that of the children whom I just now saw working there in your factory? I don’t
think you are doing justice to the child? Will you allow your child to do such hard work and pay only…
Murugan: You have come to advice me or….
Thomas: I had no intention to advice you but it so happen…
Murugan: If you have anything else to…
Thomas: Yes I have, but I don’t think I should discuss it with a person like you. Please see if you can change
yourself and then only I can be your friend. See you. (exits)
(Murugan, walks up and down the stage and finally call for Balu and Mahim.)
Murugan: Balu..Mahim…(both the children come running)
Balu: Yes Sir.
Murugan: Did you have your lunch? (Balu is frightened)
Balu: (Keeps silence.)
Murugan: Do you want to continue your studies? (looking at both the children)
Mahim: Yes Sir. I was studying in class five..
Balu: I was in class 6.
