Family Background influences how a person perceives the world.

There are factors contribute to how a person perceives the world. Oxford Dictionary,
defined perceives as interpret or regard (someone or something) in a particular way. This is
something to do with how a person gives judgment towards anything in life. According to
Samuel C.Certo(2009), perception is an individuals interpretation of a message. Different
individuals may perceive the same message in different ways. A different person has a different
interpretation towards anything in life. There is always more than a way of looking at something.
A different person has a different perspectives, meanings, and perceptions.

The personal values and beliefs will influence a persons perception of the world. A
person with a positive mind sees pain as joy but a person with negative mind may not interpret
pain the same way. Some people they defined failure as delayed success while some people they
interpret failure as a dead end. It took Thomas Edison over a thousand tries to get the light bulb
just right. These are examples of how a person perceives the world. The world that they are
facing is the same one but why they come out with different interpretations?

The way we perceive the world around us, determines our reality. If we look at situations
from a perspective of fear or intimidation, then we will live a life of fear and intimidation. And
on the other hand if we perceive things from love and gratitude, then that will be our reality. The
issue is, who is that in the first place taught us about love and gratitude? Surely the answer is
parents or the guardian. So what is being taught will certainly affect the judgment made on the
world we perceive through the senses. Family background will certainly contribute some level of
influence of how a person perceives the world.

Education received at home is one of the factors that contribute their way of perceiving
the world. Parent is said to be responsible in giving early education to children. Here, familys
background plays a critical role. Parent is the role model of children. To educate children is not
only to communicate appropriately with them but also to show good example.

An adolescent development is strongly influenced by their surroundings. Familys
backgrounds play a great role in shaping their childrens personality since their childhood and
continue to give great influence on the behavior, attitudes and thoughts of a man in adulthood.
Generally we may see that a good family relationship always associated with adolescent well
being of the aspect such as life satisfaction, self concept and academic achievement. Parents who
taught their children with positive values will shape those children to be a positive person in their
adulthood.

As we know that the level of curiosity in children is very high because they are in the
stages of learning process. Any information received will be embedded in their brain. This was
like a computer programs. So parents should know what is to be programmed. If garbage were
thrown in, it turns out to garbage as well. If parents do not teach their children to speak politely
or positively for example, do not expect that they will become a person with a good courtesy,
good thinking and good manner in their adulthood.

According to William Stewart (2000), influences on children:

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy
If children live with shame, they learn to be guilty.
If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence
If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice
If children live with security, they learn faith.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves
If children live with acceptance, they learn to find love in the world.

Children live with referring to the family who taught them values such as criticisms,
hostility, ridicule, shame, tolerance, encouragement, praise, fairness, security and approval.
These are example of how significant the role of family in shaping their attitudes, belief and
personality. Whatever we have been taught to value and beliefs will influence our perception of
the world.
The environment that the children exposed to particularly in their family unit may have
an impact towards their attitudes, personal values and belief system. This exposure may also be a
medium of development of childrens emotions, cognitive and social. There is relationship
between the family background with the attitudes and perceptions or way of thinking towards
life.

The background of the family may have an impact towards the family unit itself
particularly to the children. These elements including their parents education level, religious
belief, culture & values, affection level, personality and leadership style.

Parents can be from various education levels. Education has something to do the
knowledge level that they posses. The more knowledge that the parents are posing it can be the
better way of educating their children which will lead to better perceptions towards life. For
example parents who are aware the importance of being loving and caring towards their family
unit will ensure that everyone in the family unit is well taken care of.

Religious belief of the parents also can be very important factor in determining childrens
behavior and personality. There is no religion who taught us to do bad things instead to do good,
talk good and think good. Religious belief of the family will have an impact and influence to the
family unit itself and it produces a person who sees the world with full of blessing. For instance,
muslims believing the unseen which makes them a nation of extraordinary greatness and
fortitude only if they adhere to the Islamic teaching/law. Unseen means the faith that god is exist
for example. When children are taught with faith, it actualizes good deeds and positive attitudes
in life. When fraught with tribulations, this faith eliminates the feelings of disappointment and

despair. It creates a man who has confidence and vision in life. They are not easily giving up in
life and they see life as a window of opportunity.

The knowledge that a parent gives to their children will help them to achieve excellence
in life and to see the world with better perceptions. Knowledge will differentiate between truth
and falsehood, lawful and unlawful, valid and invalid and to understand the priorities in life.
With knowledge the existing strengths and potential possess can be expanded and fully utilized.
The values will also change. Integrity and honesty will be the order of the day while patience and
a positive mindset will illuminate the lives. The culture and values that religion promoted will
definitely be a good influence to produce a person who perceives the world with positive value.

Children may also be exposed to other negative values influenced from their friends and
improper culture learned from their social environment. The education system will also play an
important role in shaping a persons way of thinking. Students nowadays they are lacking of
being a critical thinking. This will further affect the way they perceive this world either prone to
negative or positive. However since education starts at home, family are the one who are
responsible of their early development. Again, here family background influences how a person
perceives the world.
