1 OVERVIEW
The control systems for Mark VI turbine controls, E!1"" e#citer controls, an$
%S!1"" static starter uses several layers of pro&rammin&, 'hich can be broken
broa$ly into three ma(or cate&ories) *pro$uct co$e*, 'hich is the same for all
control systems of the same type, *application co$e*, 'hich inclu$es the lo&ic an$
parameters 'hich are specific to a sin&le machine, an$ the *pro&rammin& tools*
use$ to make chan&es to the application co$e +the ,ontrol System Toolbo#-.
.ro$uct co$e inclu$es $ifferent parts / the *firm'are* of the I01 car$s, an$ the
*runtime* of the controller. The application co$e inclu$es the se2uencin& an$ the
control lo&ic, the parameters 'hich a$(ust the operation of the lo&ic +inclu$in&
tunin& constants-, an$ the communications interface to e#ternal systems such as
the operator interface an$ plant 3,S system.
4 successful control system soft'are up&ra$e 'ill a$$ress kno'n issues by
installin& ne' pro$uct co$e an$ tools 'ithout chan&in& the control lo&ic, an$
preserve the structure of the communications interface. It 'ill not chan&e the

pro$uct sof'are that has been vali$ate$ as a set usin& establishe$ factory test
proce$ures, an$ cannot be $one on an in$ivi$ual pro$uct basis.
This &ui$e $etails 'hat is necessary to accomplish a soft'are up&ra$e to a Mark
VI an$0or E!1"" an$ associate$ e2uipment 'ith an eT,SS 5ull 6p&ra$e ,3. It is
inten$e$ as &eneric &ui$e as confi&urations at each site may be $ifferent.
To re$uce the probability of uninten$e$ si$e effects $urin& an up&ra$e, 1;%< the
'ork items $escribe$ in the proce$ure an$ checklists shoul$ be un$ertaken. 4ny
other proce$ures, inclu$in& other control enhancement or maintenance operations,
must be carefully revie'e$ before they are inclu$e$ in the 'ork scope. 4ny
proce$ure, especially those 'hich intro$uce a *ma(or $ifference* into the control
system +inclu$in& the .m=b, .ecb, .ucb, etc-, shoul$ be performe$ either before or
after the up&ra$e. 6nless the TI% re2uires that the up&ra$e be installe$ first,

This up&ra$e is to be performe$ only on turbine controls that are not actively
controllin& the e2uipment, 'ith e2uipment that has been taken to an appropriate
state of %1T1 +%ock/out, Ta&/out- to protect personnel an$ e2uipment 'hile the
control is bein& up$ate$. These inclu$e the same measures that 'oul$ normally be
taken before s'itchin& the controller po'er off.
Ensure all the turbine au#iliaries are put in manual mo$e as the control system 'ill
be reset an$0or reboote$ $urin& the up&ra$e process. This 'ill cause control relays
to $rop out, an$ sub/systems that are starte$ by normally/close$ contacts may be
tol$ to start. This may inclu$e, but is not limite$ to, emer&ency lube oil an$0or seal
oil pumps. ;ote that $urin& the time the controller is off/line, other time $elay
$evices may time out, an$ 'hen the controller &oes back on/line it may initiate
other actions for e#ample &enerator hy$ro&en pur&e. Secure systems an$ revie'
control lo&ic for au#iliary systems carefully before initiatin& an up&ra$e, as
controllers 'ill &o off/line 'ithout 'arnin& $urin& the up&ra$e process.
It is reco&niDe$ that a customer may choose to sche$ule only a partial outa&e 'ith
the intent of completin& the up&ra$e at a later time. This full up&ra$e proce$ure
has ;1T been $esi&ne$ to accommo$ate this scenario, an$ the complete up&ra$e
shoul$ be complete$ as soon as possible. The up&ra$e 'ill over/'rite the Mark VI
:untime 'ith a ne'er version so that once the up&ra$e process has be&un by
installin& a ne'er version of the ,ontrol System Toolbo# on the 7MIs, no
maintenance can be performe$ on units 'hich have not been up&ra$e$.

any control constants that are not the same in the control as in the confi&uration file.
>ith the *master* confi&uration file open an$ on/line to the controller, recor$ any
constants that are $ifferent as in$icate$ usin& the *vie'0control constants* screen of
the ,ontrol System Toolbo#. >hile the screen is open, use *file0e#port to .csv*
comman$ to pro$uce a recor$ of the constants. If the *value* $oes not match the
*initial value* it 'ill revert to the *initial value* 'hen the control is re/boote$.
3ifferences may reflect thin&s such as tunin& or e#perimental chan&es to operatin&
con$itions, an$ each $ifference must be recor$e$ an$ un$erstoo$ before the

un$erstoo$ before the up&ra$e. :ecor$ the $ecision an$ value for each to be use$
after the up&ra$e.
6n$er the same con$itions, navi&ate to the *MkVI I01* level in the .m=b file, ri&ht/
click on that level, an$ select *,ompare ,onfi&uration*. 4ny $ifferences must be
resolve$ before procee$in&, since they represent chan&es ma$e to car$s that 'ere
not save$ in the confi&uration file. :ecor$ them if necessary by pro$ucin& an$
printin& a $ifferences report.

This pro&rammer is a 6S8 $evice, so it nee$s a >in$o's !""" or later 1S
'hich supports 6S8. >in$o's ;T, an$ some ol$er computers, $o not support
6S8 / it may be necessary to loa$ the eT,SS ,3 onto a >in$o's !""" or later
computer 'ith a 6S8 port to use the ,ompact 5lash pro&rammer. Make sure that
the correct eT,SS version is use$ L use the ,3 that 'as use$ to loa$ the 7MI
'orkstation+s-.
:emove the ,ompact 5lash from the 6,VE +clip the cable tie an$ raise the 'ire
clip- an$ place it into the compact flash pro&rammer. To pro&ram it, open the
associate$ .m=b file for that unit in Toolbo#. Select N3evice03o'nloa$ ,ompact
5lashJ an$ follo' the prompts. The prompt for processor helps it $etermine
'hich I. a$$ress to loa$ it 'ith the flash ima&e.
4. ;e#t $o'nloa$ :untime +select the unit, then use *3evice03o'nloa$0.ro$uct
,o$e +:untime-*- to all three controllers. ;ote that this 'ill chan&e the status
from *e2ual* to *ma(or $ifferences*, an$ any attempt to &o online 'ith the
controller 'ill probably fail until the up&ra$e is complete$. Make sure the
follo'in& selections are ma$e or enable$. Select *;o* 'hen prompte$ to reboot

The best place to look at time is the toolbo# *3evice03o'nloa$0Vie'/Set Time*. The
bo# that pops up 'ill sho' the clock on the *Toolbo# .,* i.e. the 7MI or other .,
that is runnin& Toolbo#, in 6T, an$ *Site %ocal* inclu$in& the time Done. These
settin&s are ma$e on the .,, an$ it is possible +althou&h not correct- that they can
vary from computer to computer. If you are connecte$ to the Mark VI, this toolbo#
'in$o' 'ill also sho' 6T, from that controller.
6T, shoul$ match e#actly bet'een the toolbo# ., an$ the controller, since both
shoul$ be listenin& to the same ;T. time source / usually one of the control room
7MIs 'ith a time car$, listenin& to a satellite. The .,?s time Done settin& 'ill control
the conversion from 6T, to *site local*, an$ if properly confi&ure$ 'ill accommo$ate
$ayli&ht savin& chan&es. The controller thinks only in 6T, / no concept of 'hat time
Done it is in.
;T. is the key / it must be properly confi&ure$ +6nicast Server-, an$ then the
controllers have to be properly confi&ure$ +6nicast ,lient, listenin& to the correct
server-. If they are too far off, they may not sync to the server / use Vie'0Set time to
