Static Routes

A static route is a manually configured route, which, in general, cannot be updated

dynamically from information the Vyatta system learns about the network topology.
However, if a link fails, the router will remove routes, including static routes, from
the Routing Information Base RIB! that used this interface to reach the ne"t hop.
In general, static routes should only be used for very simple network topologies, or
to override the behavior of a dynamic routing protocol for a small number of routes.
#he collection of all routes the router has learned from its configuration or from its
dynamic routing protocols is stored in its Routing Information Base RIB!.
$nicast routes are directly used to determine the forwarding table used for unicast
packet forwarding.
What is routing?
Routing is a way to get one packet from one destination to the ne"t. Routers or software in a computer
determines the ne"t network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its final destination.
#he router is connected to at least two networks and makes a decision which way to send each data
packet based on its current state of the networks it is connected to. A router is located at any point of
networks or gateway, including each Internet %&%. A router creates or maintains a table of the available
routes and their conditions and uses this information along with distance and cost algorithms to
determine the best route for a given packet. #ypically, a packet may travel through a number of network
points with routers before arriving at its destination.
Configuring Static Routes
In this e"ample, a sample configurations are presented for basic static routes. 'hen
you are finished, the system will be configured as shown in the (igure below. In this
e"ample, a static route is created that says, in effect, )any packets destined for the
**.+.+.+,- network should be forwarded to *./.*0.+./01.
#his section includes the following e"amples2
3 #he 4"ample below 5reating a static route.
#he 4"ample below creates a static route to network **.+.+.+,- directed towards
*./.*0.+./0.
