Counselors Corner
Mary Langford, Counselor

You will read this is early November,
and by that time we will surely be
enjoying cooler weather. How many of
you have made the same promise I
have made to myself: when the weather is cooler I will
start my walking program again. OK, folks, its here. No
more excuses. Time to put on those walking shoes and
go for it. We cannot escape the fact that exercise is a vital
factor in our well-being, no matter our age.
Now lets think about Thanksgiving. Look back
over your year. What would your list of blessings include?
Whom are you thankful to? Is there a note you have been
thinking of writing to someone who touched your life in a
special way years ago? Maybe, like me, you have a
relative who has been your cheerleader all your life. Im
recalling a fth grade teacher who encouraged me to
write. Is there someone who loaned you money or helped
with your children or taught you a skill? Think about those
who have helped you along your path and how pleased
they would be to receive a word of thanks from you.
Next lets think of what we are thankful for. I
suspect that your list, like mine, is endless. We are surely
among the most blessed people on earth. If we have a
roof over our heads, food to eat every day, a car to drive, a
job, some education, we are already way above the rest of
the worlds population. And for most of us, our lives
consist of so much more. We have families and friends
and something to look forward to every week. Most
important, we are adopted children of the Lord of the
universe who shows His love to us in countless ways. In
this month of November, ask your family or friends to help
you make an ongoing list of what you are thankful for.
Maybe this hasnt been the greatest year for you.
Thats been true for me too. Most of us can think of some
things we will give thanks in spite of. This week I sat with
a young friend who has been through months of
chemotherapy and is headed for surgery in Houston. We
named the good things we already know that God has
brought out of this experience, and declared that He is not
nished yet. For the rst time in many years, my husband
has had some medical issues this year. We are so
thankful for sharp young doctors who deal with his needs
respectfully and effectively. Maybe you are dealing with a
health problem or a family difculty. Maybe this has been
a year of loss for you. Gods word indicates that He
especially loves a sacrice of thanksgiving. We can learn
from the great theologian Matthew Henry, who, when he
was robbed by thieves who took all his money, said, Let
me be thankful because I was never robbed before;
second, because though they took my purse, they didnt
take my life; third, although they took my all, it wasnt
much. And fourth, because it was I who was robbed and
not I who robbed.
Giving thanks always for all things to God the
Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

BE THANKFUL Colossians 3:15
What are you thankful for?
There was a woman, who
moved away from home with her husband and two
sons. Things were not good where she lived and the
family felt a fresh start would be just what they
needed. It wasnt long after the move that her
husband died and she was separated from her family
with two boys. They decided to stay put. The boys
grew and married girls from the area. Things were
better for a few years until tragedy struck the family
again and both boys died. Realizing her age was now
a factor to her location, she decided to move back
home near family. Encouraging her daughters-in-law
to stay near their family, she hugged them and said
good-bye. One daughter-in-law could not leave her.
She said something like, I want to live where you live,
I want your family to be my family, I am even willing to
believe in the God you believe in. So o" Naomi and
Ruth go to Bethlehem.
It must have been about this time of the year
when they nally reached home. Farmers were
gathering the harvest. Ruth decided to pick up grain
in the elds the harvesters missed. By Divine
direction, she ended up in a eld that belonged to a
man named Boaz. As she told Naomi about her day,
Naomi was excited because Boaz was a relative of
her late husband. Naomi said, He (God) has not
stopped showing his kindness to the living and the
dead. (Ruth 2:20)
The Hebrew word for kindness is hesed. It is
one of the characteristics of God as HE deals with
HIS creation, the elect, and the individual. HE makes
the sun to shine on the rebellious as well as the
righteous. HE sends rain when needed so that all
might have food to eat. Starvation is the end result of
selshness and unconcern by Gods creation.
The Bible is full of examples of Gods kindness
toward all of us. HIS blessings are new and in
abundance every day. As HIS children we are
commanded to be kind to others. I am thankful this
year for HIS kindness and the kindness you have
shown Deedy and me over the past 20 years. There
is not enough space or time for me to tell you of all
the ways you have been so kind to us. We have all
been recipients of Gods kindness and the kindness
of others. Call someone (or send them a text) who
has demonstrated Gods kindness to you in the past
and thank him or her this Thanksgiving season. Kind
people are the best kind of people.
