LAB 4 : IMAGE WITH FRAME

Objectives

By the end of this lab, students should be able to:


 Make an image with frame.

Theory/Topics
 quickmask button
 Filter>Distort>Ripple
 Invert the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I)
 Layer style-Drop shadow
 Filter > Add Noise
 Filter > Motion Blur
 Layer > Group with Previous

 Image > Rotate Canvas 90 CW

 Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal

 Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical

ACTIVITY 4A : NEW EDGE

1) Start with your image


2) Make a selection around the inside of the image
3) Invert the selection Ctrl+Shift+I
4) Press the quickmask button on the tools palette or just press the "Q" key

5) Filter>Distort>Ripple
6) Here is the filter applied to the quick mask.
7) Turn off the quick mask using the button or pressing "Q" again

8) Invert the selection back again. Ctrl+Shift+I


9) Press Ctrl+Shift+J to move the selection to a new layer.

10) Fill the background with white.


11) To finish off the effect add a default drop shadow

12) Here is our image with the new edge, experiment with different filters and
have fun.

ACTIVITY 4B : WOODEN FRAME

1. Create a new file and view Grids. Using snap to Grids and Polygon Lasso
Tool, set a selection segment points to create the top part of the frame.

3. Make a new layer and fill the selection with black .

4. Make another layer for left side part of the frame.

5. Create a wood texture. Select any shade of Brown as a foreground color.


Press Alt + Delete to fill foreground color. Filter > Add Noise (Uniform,
Monochromatic, 27). Filter > Motion Blur (angle 0, distance 450 or experiment
with more)

Drag it over the layer of the top part of the frame.

Layer > Group with Previous

6. Same wood texture will be used for left side part of the frame. The texture
should have vertical lines. No need to make it again. Select the file.

Image > Rotate Canvas 90 CW

7. Drag it over the layer of the left part of the frame.

Layer > Group with Previous

7. Merge down the texture layer with its base layer.

Select the texture layer. Go to the properties of layer palette and select Merge
Down.

8. Make a copy of each layer.

Flip the copy of the top part vertically and the copy of the left part horizontally.

Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal

Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical

8. Adjust all the parts properly to create the frame structure.

9. Off the visibility icon i.e. EYE of the background layer select any of the frame
layer and click 'Merge Visible' to get frame with single layer.

10. Using Elliptical Marquee Tool create a realistic knot on the left part of the
frame.

11. To make the frame more realistic use bevel effect on the frame.

Layer > Layer Style > Bevel & Emboss > Inner Bevel

12. Drag the image on the frame. Drag the image layer below the frame layer.
