Righteousness through Faith whose righteousness and whose faith?

now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is at-
tested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in J esus
Christ for all who believe.
Pauls letter to the Church at Rome, 3.21-22

Its a question that has been battled for centuries: About whose righteousness does
Paul speak? Is it my own getting right with God that draws me closer to salvation,
or is it an alien righteousness outside of me (specifically, from God), that makes
me right with God?

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther, Augustinian monk that he was, struggled with always doing the right
thing, so that at the great Day of Judgment he would be judged on Gods side. Not until his impris-
onment in the tower at Wartburg Castle did he have a breakthrough. In an event called affection-
ately, the tower experience, as Luther translated the bible into German, he encountered in a new
way the above quoted words from Pauls letter to the Romans. In a moment of clarity, he realized
that Gods righteousness and not his own mattered in the arena of salvation. Luther suffered from a
Medieval piety that pushed him to see himself as worthless as maggot fodder and utterly incapa-
ble of attaining Gods righteousness.

When he realized that Gods righteousness made him fit for Gods righteousness, a great burden
lifted from his heart he understood for the first time Reformation grace. Now all that remained
was faithfulness.

In the centuries since Luther, debates have waged over the subject of this faith is it my faith in
God that saves me, or is it Gods faithfulness to humanity that saves? In Pauls words, both mean-
ings can be understood. What if Pauls intent is that the Romans, and we know that salvation is
completely Gods act? What if my act of faithfulness is nothing more than a faith-filled, trusting re-
sponse to a righteous and faithful God who has chosen me simply out of love?

I choose to believe that the Reformation breakthrough is just that Gods act in love toward hu-
manity. Period. How I choose to respond to Gods action does not determine my salvation, but the
extent to which I have accepted Gods love toward me. Period. It seems too simple, doesnt it? I
think that was Luthers difficulty as well. He wanted to know that he had accomplished something,
that he had worked in order to garner Gods attention. When he realized that Gods actions far out-
weighed his own, Luther realized the depth and breadth of Gods grace.

So, how hard do you work for Gods attention? You know, you can stop trying so hard you al-
ready have Gods righteousness and faithfulness! Thanks be to God alone!

Peace, Pr. Tim

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any con-
cerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs
and encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council which-
ever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your dea-
con as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of
speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a
solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share
wisdom and knowledge.
Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-
ten and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of top-
ics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you
when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage
you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assis-
tance.

Demonstrate your
thankfulness this
season

Each holiday season, Zions anticipates
and relies on a seasonal increase in contri-
butions. It is through the donations of every
individual and family in the congregation
that we are able to carry on our work now
and throughout the year.

If you need a convenient way to make re-
curring contributions or plan to make an ad-
ditional gift before the end of the year, we
encourage you to check out our electronic
giving option, Simply Giving. As the pace of
life speeds up around the holidays, you
may find electronic giving a most welcome
way to make contributions.

To set up a recurring giving schedule,
please complete a Simply Giving paper au-
thorization form available from the church
secretary or Gwen Anderson and return it
to the church office.

Thank you for your generosity and support!

Human Trafficking: How To Help Locally

Modern day slavery is on the rise in our nation and Ohio is one of the most prevalent states
when it comes to incidents of human trafficking. We see thousands of men, women, and children
being forced into slavery through the labor and sex industries. In an effort to battle this right here
in northwest Ohio, the Human Trafficking Protection Project was developed within Legal Aid of
Western Ohio, Inc. The project works to provide legal assistance, as well as collaboration to meet
the physical and emotional needs of victims. This effort requires participation from many people in
the area to offer a holistic path to recovery. We need your help to meet these survivor needs. Our
most pressing need at this time is in the form of $25 gift cards. Both grocery/super-center and gas
cards are needed as we help these survivors with basic essentials, transportation and housing. If
you would like to help, gift cards can be dropped off at the LAWO office at 118 Clinton Street,
Suite 101 Defiance, OH 43512 . There is a mail slot in the front door for after hours donations.
Please place in an envelope with attention to HTPP. If you need to arrange an alternate dona-
tion drop or have any questions, please email Kelly King at kellmking@yahoo.com.

Library news

Right now most of the books in the library have been donated. Here are a few that might be of in-
terest:

Laugh Your Way to Grace by Rev. Susan Sparks. Rev. Sparks is an ex-lawyer turned comedi-
an and Baptist minister. This is a book about how humor and laughter have everything to do with
God. Laughter can help you: find perspective when faced with adversity, heal-emotionally, physi-
cally and spiritually, keep your faith when God is silent, live with elegance, beauty and generosity
of spirit.

Snake Oil by Rev. Becca Stevens. Rev. Stevens is an Episcopal priest at Vanderbilt University.
She is also the founder of Thistle Farms and Magdalene. These two social enterprises work hand
in hand serving women who have survived prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. Rev Stevens
calls herself a snake oil seller. She infuses natural oils with powerful stories and believes they
help heal the world.

Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee. In a time of death and terror, Leymah Gbowee
brought Liberias women togetherand together, they led a nation to peace. This is a gripping
chronicle of a journey from hopelessness to empowerment that will touch all who dream of a better
world. Ms. Gbowee is also a noble peace prize winner.

Wounded Trapped and Voiceless by Emily Greta. Imagine being trapped in your own body!
This is a true story of Phyllis Klenk and her battle to prove she is alive. Unable to move or com-
municate this book draws you into her incredible journey from walking with God to a triumphant
emergence from coma to life.

We also have several books of fiction by authors such as: Janet Hitchcock, Wanda Brunstettler,
Dale Cramer, Beverly Lewis, Janette Oke, and Tracie Peterson to name a few.

We would like to enhance the library with some new releases. What type of books are you inter-
ested in reading? We welcome your input (you can leave the information in the church office).
