If the purchasing order calls for different warranty conditions, above stated conditions are surpassed. 1.2 Introduction The MULTISTEP DIGITAL VALVE is a diaphragm valve controlled by two solenoid valves (2 and 3) piloted by an electronic system that permits the steps opening and closing and the regulation of the flow rate. Refer to dwg. 4570/11M for 4 valve. A typical application is the upstream (or downstream) fitting of M for a meter (displacement or turbine) on tank-truck loading plants or for products movement from a tank-truck to another. Its main components are: diaphragm main valve (1) needle valve for the opening and closing speed control (6). solenoid valve normally opened (2) solenoid valve normally closed (3) 1.3 Working principles The Multistep Digital Valve is an electrically actuated, hydraulically operated valve; its main components (Dwg. 7470) are: Body (1) Diaphragm assembly Cover (2) The diaphragm assembly is the only moving part. It consists of a diaphragm made in special synthetic fabric bonded with various elastomers and a gasket inserted in the disc retainer to form a seal with the valve seat when a pressure is applied above the diaphragm. The diaphragm assembly forms a sealed chamber in the upper portion of the valve separating operating pressure from line pressure. The MULTISTEP DIGITAL VALVE function is that of regulate the flow rate by opening and closing at steps the solenoid valves; this function is assured by an electronic system that controls the valves with pulses. Opening, closing and flow rate control are obtainet by varying frequency and duration of the pulses transmitted by the electronic control system. The control of the MULTISTEP DIGITAL VALVE relies on the electronic counter VEGA; among the different functions that it can perform, VEGA is programmable for the management of the automatic multistep valve (see our VEGA general manual)
Page 2 ISOIL IMPIANTI S.p.A. Code MA/0015/20/EN/01 All rights reserved. Reproduction of this manual is forbidden. 1.3.1 Valve closed Refer to dwg.4570/11M for 4 valve and 4570/10M for 3. To close the main valve, both solenoid valves must be de-energized. The product, through the solenoid valve NO (2), enters the chamber above the diaphragm and being unable to flow because the solenoid valve NC (3) is closed, cant come out of it. This way the upstream pressure is applied over the diaphragm, causing the main valve to close. 1.3.2 Valve opened Refer to dwg.4570/11M for 4 valve and 4570/10M for 3. To open the main valve it is sufficient to energize the solenoid valve (3). The pressure in the chamber above the diaphragm is completely released and the main valve opens. The minimum pressure needed for this operation is 30 KPa. 1.3.3 Step-opening Consider the valve closed as point 1.3.1. Energize the solenoid valve (2). In this way the camber pressure above the diaphragm is isolated from the line pressure. To make a valve step-opening, pulses should be sent to the solenoid valve (3) so that it opens for a very short time. At each pulse, the main valve opens more and more due to a small pressure released by the solenoid valve (3). To be sure that solenoid valve is closed or opened a metallic click should be heard. Its absence or a different noise indicates that solenoid valve has not worked properly. If the desired flow is not reached because the solenoid valve pulse determines a too high flow variation, act on the needle valve (6): a partial closing of this needle causes a smaller quantity of fluid to pass through at each valve pulse. This way a finer adjustments can be obtained. 1.3.4 Step-closing Consider the valve completely opened as point 1.3.2; de-energize the solenoid valve (3) so that inside the chamber above the diaphragm the pressure is stabilized. Now, by sending pulses to the solenoid valve (2) the same opens and closes in a very short time. At each single opening a small quantity of product enters the chamber above the diaphragm, increasing little by little the pressure, thus closing the valve step by step. For an accurate adjustment, close partially the needle valve (6) to decrease the quantity of product that, at each pulse, enters the chamber over the diaphragm. 1.3.5 Programmed flow rate To obtain the desired flow rate the valve operates in step-opening mode (see 1.3.3) if the actual flow rate is below the desired flow rate, and in step-closing mode (see 1.3.4) in the opposite case until the flow rate reaches the established quantity. Once the desired flow rate is achieved, the solenoid valves are operated only to maintain the desired flow rate.

All parts under pressure must be released before disassembling the valve or its accessories for adjustment, inspection, servicing or substitution of its components.
Also make sure that all electric or electronic part, if present, are disconnected from its power supply.
3 Servicing 3.1 Preventive maintenance Valve requires no lubrication. A periodic inspection is however advisable to check if crust or damages are affecting the efficiency of the valve. For the installation follow the instructions below; refer to dwg. 4570/10-11M. 1) Before the installation of the valve it is suggested to clean thoroughly the pipings to remove dirt, crusts and other foreign particles. 2) It is recommended to install root valves at the inlet and outlet to ease servicing operations 3) Make sure that the flow direction through the valve is in accordance with the direction indicated by the arrow on the valve itself. 4) Leave space enough around the valve to ease access for adjustment, servicing and disassembly. 5) It is suggested to arrange the valve horizontally and with the cover on the top side; this arrangement makes easier the servicing and inspection of the valve. However, a vertical arrangement can be used. 6) Make sure that the electrical connections of the solenoid valves are in accordance with the data printed on its plate.
3.2 Disassembly CAUTION: Disconnect power supply to the solenoid valves before disassembly operations. 1) Disconnect solenoid valves NC and NO. 2) Loosen the fittings on the main valve cover
Page 6 ISOIL IMPIANTI S.p.A. Code MA/0015/20/EN/01 All rights reserved. Reproduction of this manual is forbidden. 3) Remove the nuts (15) and the spring washers (13) 4) Remove the main valve cover (2) 5) Remove the diaphragm (9) with main valve assembly connected to it 6) Remove nut (4) and spring washer (10) on the main shaft (3). Diaphragm washer (5), diaphragm (9), valve guide retainer (6) and backing washer (12) can now be separated from the shaft. 7) Remove Seal Q-Rings (7). Q-Ring (7) is inserted in a dovetail-shaped recess in the valve guide retainer and hence requires careful removal. 3.3 Inspection Each part of the valve must be inspected for cut marks, scratches, corrosion or damage by foreign particles. The diaphragm must not show any scratch or cut marks on the surface.
3.4 Reassembly Reassembly is the exact reversal of the disassembling procedure. If the backing washer has been replaced, check the conditions of the seal Q-Ring (7). 3.5 Solenoid valves Solenoid valves do not require maintenance. In case of failure, the whole solenoid valve must be replaced. NOTE: The two solenoid valves (2) and (3) are not interchangeable being the first normally open and the second normally closed. 3.6 Spare parts When ordering please specify exact code number shown on drawings. If rubber parts are ordered as a store parts, caution must be considered to avoid damages due to exposure to air or sunlight.
ISOIL IMPIANTI S.p.A. Page 7 All rights reserved. Reproduction of this manual is forbidden. Code MA/0015/20/EN/02 4 Service suggestions to eliminate inefficiencies to main valve Symptom Possible cause Remedy Valve does not open; pressure is not registered at the valve inlet Upstream isolation valve closed Open the isolation valve. Pump is not working Start the pump Valve does not open; pressure is registered at the valve inlet. Downstream isolation valve closed Open the isolation valve. Differential pressure across the valve is too low Check the pressure, it should not be less than 30 kPa. No electrical power at solenoid valves Check the electrical connections and correct if necessary. NC solenoid valve defective: it does not operate upon energizing. Pressure inside the cover chamber is drained upon energizing the NC solenoid valve. A faulty NC solenoid valve does not allow the draining and, therefore, the valve does not open. Replace the NC solenoid valve. Diaphragm is ruptured. Differential pressure across the diaphragm operates the main valve; therefore, if the diaphragm is ruptured, the differential pressure can not be created and the valve does not open. Replace the diaphragm. Refer to the dismantling procedure mentined above. Line shocks are observed during valve opening. Air is trapped n the control tubing Loosen the tube fitting nut at the highest point and allow the entrapped air to vent out. As soon as the product starts leaking out, tighten the nut again.
Page 8 ISOIL IMPIANTI S.p.A. Code MA/0015/20/EN/01 All rights reserved. Reproduction of this manual is forbidden. Symptom Possible cause Remedy Stem movementi in guide is not smooth Check the guide and the stem for scratches and polish if necessary. Also check the stem for straightness and concentricity of guide diameter. Valve does not open fully, locks at slow flow rate. No electrical power at NO solenoid valve Check the electrical connections and correct if necessary. NO solenoid valve is defective: it does not operate upon energizing. A faulty NO solenoid valve permits the high upstream pressure to enter into the valve cover chamber, even when it is energized. This does not allow complete draining of cover chamber and, therefore, the valve locks at a slow flow rate. Replace the NO solenoid valve, if necessary. Valve does not close upon de- energizing both solenoids and continues to deliver at a high flow rate. NC solenoid valve is defective and allows draining of the cover chamber. A faulty NC valve allows the draining and, therefore, the valve continues to deliver at a faster rate. Check the NC solenoid valve for functioning, and replace if necessary. Valve does not close upon de- energizing both solenoids and continues to deliver at a low rate. O-ring seal at the seat is damaged Replace the O-ring seal, if found damaged Leakage in the control tubing (leaking joints allow draining of the cover chamber and, therefore, the main valve does not maintain pressure-tight sealing Tighten the tube fitting joints.
