CONTENTS AND FORMAT REQUIREMENTS

OF THE FINAL PLANT DESIGN REPORT

For the basic formatting requirements (margins, fonts, pagination, line spacing, etc.), please
adapt these from the template give for Research Study report.
Basic rule in writing a formal technical report: NEVER start a section/subsection directly with a
figure/ table/ chart. There should be at least an introductory paragraph

1. Approval sheet (follow format/content as given for the Research Study report).
2. Title Page. Follow the format of the title page as given for the Research Study
report.
3.

For this section, you will have to use your imagination, like the ChE department or
the panel members compose the entity who requested for the design work to be
done and you composes the process design team tasked to accomplish the design
work.
4.

List of Figures and List of Tables follow the Table of Contents. Group them
according to sections that they appear in. Refer to example below:

Remaining Sections of the Plant Design Report
6.

In subsection d, present, together with your discussion a simple site development
plan (for plant location) and facility layout.
7. Process Flow Diagram and Description
7.1. Process Flow Diagram Development
In presentation of PFD, we begin with concept block diagram, increase detail until
we present the final detailed PFD. We combine the diagrammatic presentation
with description/discussion; for example providing 1 or 2 paragraphs to explain the
choice of selecting 3-stage distillation column at that stage of process
conceptualization.
Make sure that the evolution of the concept block diagram to its more detailed
versions are explained concisely before proceeding to the next stage of process
flow diagram development.
The last diagram to be presented in section 7.1 should be a detailed block diagram
where exact operations/equipment name are identified and important process
conditions are clearly indicated.
7.2. Process Description
For this section, you begin with and introductory paragraph for the final version of
the detailed process flowsheet. This uses the standard/accepted templates for
equipment and should include process control for several units of equipment that
you deem very important to have such indication, like the figure below:

Then discuss the process in detail, with appropriate paragraphing to delineate
process steps/stages following the style used in Turton, et al book.
Note that in the sample figure above, only one equipment has process control; but
your work should have several especially for the very important ones. Also note
that equipment legend is also indicated (upper portion) for easy identification of
the equipment. Critical/important process conditions should also be indicated
appropriately. The stream numbers to be indicated should be judiciously limited so
that the material balance block would not be too long and would not crowd the
figure.
In addition, the drawing should contain (on the lower portion) a material balance
block (a table showing for each numbered stream:
(a) Total flow rate
(b) Flow rate of each chemical species
(c) Temperature
(d) Pressure
As much as possible, the flowsheet (with equipment legend & matl balance block)
should appear on a single sheet for continuous reference.
8. Material, Energy Balances, Equipment Specification and Utility Requirement
8.1. Material Balances
As an introduction of this subsection, present the quantitative flow diagram (see
Timmerhaus example). Then present the detailed, systematic and logical
calculation for material balance. Calculations should be presented in the
traditional manner so that evaluators can follow the calculation process easily.
Ensure good use of equations, etc. The group, for their personal convenience, may
use Excel but only for facilitation of the computation and possible recomputation
if it is needed to change basis, etc. Referencing and proper citation is a must (also
all throughout the report where they are needed).
8.2. Energy Balances
In a similar manner as in the previous subsection, introduce with the utilities
summary table is presented (see Table 3.7 of Seider et al book.). Then, present the
details of calculation. In this subsection, all of the heating, cooling, power, and
other utility demands should be identified and calculated accordingly. Referencing
and proper citation is a must.
8.3. Equipment Sizing and Specification
In this subsection, begin with the summarized equipment specifications table,
similar to the given example of ABS case study in Timmerhaus. Following would
be the presentation of the details of equipment identification, calculations for
sizing and specifications. Standard equipment design calculation methodologies
(including heuristics or rules of thumb) should be followed and presented in detail.
Referencing and proper citation is a must.
General note:
The calculation of material and energy balances and equipment design and sizing
and specification, as much as possible, should include presentation of schematic
diagrams, chemical reactions, operating conditions, source/reference
figures/tables/graphs, etc. (with proper citation) which are necessary to elucidate
the computation process.
9. Economic Analysis
9.1. Equipment Costing
In a similar manner as in the previous section, begin with the summary table of
equipment cost. Then, presentation of the details of the calculation processes of
equipment cost should be given in detail, including the showing of the source
equations and charts (with proper citing of source).
9.2. Total Capital Investment and Total Product Costing
This should not only include the tables but also some short but appropriate
discussions. Details of calculations need not be shown since these are just basic
arithmetic. Remember that all of these numbers are just estimates and should be
treated accordingly.
9.3. Profitability
This subsection section presents the calculations to obtain several of the
profitability measures (ROI, NPV, IRR). Tables that show the calculation of
annual cash flows (similar to the one presented in Example 17.29 (Seider et al
book). It would be very advantageous for the team to study this example problem.
Finally the design team will present its judgment of the profitability of the
proposed plant.
10. Conclusions and Recommendations
The principal conclusions of the design study should be presented, together with a
clear statement of recommendations, accompanied by justifications, for
management. Again, you can use your imagination here to connect it with the
letter of transmittal.
11. Acknowledgements
A maximum of 1 page only
12. Bibliography Follow format/style as given in research report (FYPS) template.
13. Appendices
Things to be included here should ONLY SUPPLEMENT what has been
discussed in detail within the main body of the report. THERE SHOULD BE NO
DUPLICATION OF INCLUDED MATERIALS.
Note: Font size, spacing here is not strictly controlled since we want maximized
use of paper space. However, the same margin requirements (as with the main
report body) have to be complied.
