LOOKING BACK
Remember When
Acts 16:6-34; Philippians 1:3; 12-21

Hope for the future often comes from remembering when God was faithful in the past. How you serve, love
and encourage others today could become their Remember When on a day they need hope.

Thinking It Through

What gives me the most hope every day is God's grace; knowing that his grace is going to give me the
strength for whatever I face, knowing that nothing is a surprise to God.
~ Rick Warren

Tomorrow hopes we have learned something from yesterday.
~ John Wayne

As years passed away I have formed the habit of looking back upon that former self as upon another person,
the remembrance of whose emotions has been a solace in adversity and added zest to the enjoyment of
prosperity.
~ Simon Newcomb

Working It Out
1. Whats the difference between what Satan would have you remember and what Jesus wants you to
remember? (Acts 26:18; I Cor 11:23-25; II Cor 2:11)

2. Write down some of your Remember When experiences and reflect on the people God used in your life
during those times.

3. Pray for God to show you who you need to serve, love and encourage this week. They will be thinking of
you in a future Remember When

LOOKING AHEAD
David: The Turmoil of His Times
1 Samuel 8

David is mentioned 1139 times in our Bible; second in frequency only to Jesus. His life is chronicled in nearly
100 chapters in our Old Testaments. From rural shepherd boy to powerful king, his life is woven in to Gods
sacred drama of redemption to the extent that when the angels announced Jesus birth, they declared that He
would sit on the throne of David. As we prepare to trace his life together, lets take a look at the historical and
biblical context of his life a time of turmoil.

1. Do a little digging to study a timeline of the history of Israel from Abraham through the nations return
from captivity and the coming of Jesus Christ. Mark where David falls in this chronology.

2. Jot down a brief description of what Israel like in the years before David came?

3. What was Israel like in the years after Davids death?

4. Read 1 Samuel 8 for a look at the spiritual climate of the nation.
a. What does the nation fear? v 4-5
b. What do they propose as the remedy to their fears? v 4-5, 19-20
c. How does God view their demand? v7-9
d. What warning does the prophet give them? v 11-18
e. Why do you think the Lord gave in to their demand? v 22

In preparation for this series, begin to read through the biblical record of Davids life beginning in 1 Samuel 16.
