The purpose of this procedure is to describe a method for carrying out steel
reinforcement works.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure shall be applicable to all types of reinforcement works carried
out by the Company.

".1 Responsibility
The responsibility for carrying out this 8ethod 'tatement shall be that of the
ro7ect 5ngineer: unless otherwise specifically mentioned in this procedure.
The Quality 5ngineer; ro7ect 5ngineer shall be responsible for inspection $
testing.
".2 Receipt & Storage
".2.1 The reinforcement steel shall be free from contamination: pitting: rust: mill
scale: oil grease: soil or any material that impair bond between reinforcement
$ concrete.
".2.2 The storage of steel reinforcement shall confirm to the following/
roper raised platform shall be made to recei9e the reincement.
The steel of 9arying diameters shall be seggregated and marked clearly for
identification.
The steel should be co9ered with polyethene sheet; tarpauline sheet or as
agreed on site.
".3 Cutting & Bending
".3.1 ?hen temperature of steel is below "@ C: special precautions shall be taken
such as reducing the speed of bending or increasing the radius of bending.
".3.2 &ars incorrectly bent shall not be straightened $ rebent.
".3.3 *eat should not be used for bending reinforcement.

bent as shown in the reinforcement bending schedules.

circumstances by welding.

loose mill scale: grease or any other substances likely to affect the bond with
the concrete.

".(.13 Co9er to beam $ column reinforcement shall be to links: hoops or stirrups $
not to main reinforcement.
".(.1( All intersections ; 7unctions of reinforcement shall be securely tied with tying
wire.
".(.1" All knots in tying wires shall be located within the reinforcement cage $ not
located towards surface of finished concrete.
".(.1, ?here9er possible: reinforcement shall be constructed in to rigid cages or
mats before fiFing in form work.

".".1 =ap shall be as specified in the drawings; Contract specifications. The
o9erlaps shall be placed in staggered manner or as specified.
".".2 All defects in lapping $ 7ointing pointed out during inspections shall be
corrected before concreting.
