GLOBAL NEWS
Dollar Jumps as Fed Ends Bond Buying While Crude Retreats
The dollar climbed to a three-week high after the Federal Reserve judged the U.S. economy strong
enough to end its asset-purchase program. Industrial metals and oil fell with Hong Kong stocks. The
Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index gained 0.1 percent by 11:01 a.m. in Tokyo, with the yen weakening 0.2
percent and Indonesias rupiah leading emerging-market currencies lower. Nickel retreated 1 percent
and West Texas Intermediate crude oil slid 0.4 percent. Hong Kongs Hang Seng Index dropped 0.3
percent after its biggest two-day rally in seven months. The NZX 50 Index advanced to a record in
Wellington while Standard & Poors 500 Index futures were little changed. The Fed cited job gains in
its decision to wind up the unprecedented bond-buying program, which has suppressed U.S. yields
and fueled capital inflows into emerging-market assets. Officials retained a commitment to keep key
interest rates low for a considerable time. An update on third-quarter U.S. gross domestic product is
due today, and euro-area confidence data is scheduled before inflation tomorrow, when the Bank of
Japan will report on monetary policy.

Smartphone woes drag Samsung Electronics third-quarter profit to more than three-year low
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) saw its July-September quarterly profit fall to the lowest
level in more than three years, as a decline in earnings from its smartphone business set the South
Korean giant on track for its worst year since 2011. The global smartphone leader has lost market
share in annual terms for the past two quarters, lagging behind Apple Inc (AAPL.O) in the premium
market and overtaken by rivals like Lenovo Group Ltd (0992.HK) and Xiaomi Inc at the bottom end.
Samsung on Thursday said its third-quarter operating profit fell by an annual 60.1 percent to 4.1
trillion won ($3.90 billion), matching its guidance issued earlier this month and marking the weakest
result since the second quarter of 2011. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, Samsung said it
"cautiously expects an earnings increase, driven by strong seasonal demand for TVs and continued
growth momentum for the memory business".=However it said the mobile division's outlook remained
uncertain. Samsung spent most of the quarter without launching a new flagship device and continued
to struggle in the mid-to-low tier markets. The firm will likely have to sacrifice margins to ensure it
does not lose more market share. Cheaper phones are also expected to drive global smartphone
market growth in coming years, meaning a general trend of lower average selling prices.
