Giddy

POCKET Rocket took out the 20th running of the Myrniong
Cup last Wednesday.
The filly, otherwise known as art teacher Michelle Moseur,
was a popular winner in the Race that stops Myrniong,
beating out 23 other contenders.
Owner Seth Wall was also presented with the Myrniong
Cup and flowers to commemorate the day.
Principal Allan Peach said all the children picked a horse to
win and the names of those students who picked the winner
went into a draw to become the owner.
I think its such a popular day because its a community
event, Mr Peach said.
We had between 40 and 50 parents here and everybody
went to a lot of effort to get dressed up.
He said the day also included a Fashions on the Field
competition, a special lunch and rotating activities that
involved all things to do with spring racing and horses.
Last year we had former Melbourne Cup winning horse
Sub Zero visit the school for the day, which was very exciting
for everyone, he said.
Meanwhile the Ballan Jockey Club is gearing up for the
153rd Ballan Cup this Saturday at Geelong Racecourse.
Ballan Jockey Club president Luke Mullane said he expected
between 2500 and 3000 people to attend the event.
Our 800 dining packages have already sold out, but weve
still got some marquee packages available starting from
$34, Mr Mullane said.
The Ballan Cup has been held at Geelong Racecourse for
over 10 years and Mr Mullane said it had a nice atmosphere
with great facilities.
There will be kids entertainment, a live jazz band and also
fashions on the field with great prizes, so frock up. Last year
we had 60 entries, he said.
He said five buses would take guests between Ballan and
Geelong and if people wanted to travel by bus they should
register their names at the Commercial Hotel in Ballan by
Thursday, November 6.
He said: If people want more information they can go to
our Ballan Jockey Club Facebook page, and were looking for
people to like us on Facebook.

Taking on term two

Before councilors elected
their shire mayor for the
2014/15 year at a Special
Meeting (Statutory and Annual Appointments Meeting) last Wednesday 29 October, outgoing mayor Paul
Tatchell summed up his
year, saying to be given the
privilege of being mayor is a
very humbling experience.
I am extremely grateful to have been given that
opportunity.

Councillors are seven

dedicated people from seven
different backgrounds with
seven different agendas
and our CEO Rob Croxford
should be commended as he
guided us through turbulent
waters, especially as growth
defies the principles of basic
economics.
Cr. Tatchell thanked and
acknowledged the efforts of
council staff and the general
managers.
There is no doubt the focus
is about the future; Councils commitment to the 2041
plan is a vital pathway to our
sustainability.

We must be vigilant with

our dealings with developers and send a clear message
to Ministers, he said.

Cr Tatchell said being a

councilor is something I
thought I would never ever
do, but very pleased I have.
The election of a new mayor
followed with two nominations put forward. Cr. Allan
Comrie (East Moorabool)
nominated Cr. Tatchell and
Cr. Pat Toohey (Woodlands)
nominated Cr. Tom Sullivan
(West Moorabool).
Both accepted the nomination and a vote of 5 (Comrie,
Dudzik, Spain, Edwards,
Tatchell) to 2 (Toohey, Sullivan) amongst councilors declared Cr Tatchell as the new
mayor, for a second term, in
his third year as a councilor.

I thank my collegues for

the opportunity to do this
again. You can guarantee
this, I will do my very best
to carry on the advocacy for
Moorabool.
Cr. John Spain (East Moorabool) was elected as Deputy
Mayor.

Annual Mayoral ($71,058)

and councilor ($22,965) allowances were also set after the Minister for Local
Government determined in
December 2013 that they be
increased by 2.5 per cent.
Provision has been made for
an annual adjustment factor

Lets talk growth

By 2041 the Bacchus Marsh district will be home to 17,000
new residents and Moorabool Shire wants ideas on how to
accommodate the growth.
Moorabool Shire mayor Paul Tatchell said an additional
17,000 new residents would drive 10,000 more cars locally
and require more schools, services and more than 5000 new
homes by 2041.
Growth on this scale requires considered planning and an
eye to the future, Cr Tatchell said.
With the enormous population growth in Melton and
Bacchus Marshs position within the peri urban commuter
belt for Melbourne, we expect that this area will be subject
to significant growth pressures that need to be proactively
managed.
Between now and December 12, the community can share
their ideas for managing growth through a Talking 2041
community engagement process.
Cr Tatchell said Talking 2041 would make it easier for people
to share their thoughts by filling out postcard style surveys
available at shire offices, the library and some local retailers.
He said residents could also participate in weekly forums
through the shires community engagement portal and
respond to a discussion paper.
The first stage of the Talking 2041 community engagement
process for the Urban Growth Strategy will run from 20
October 2014 through to 12 December 2014 and the results
will be shared with the community in March 2015.
In November, the community will be invited to participate
in a workshop to examine the issues around growth in
more detail. The details of the November workshop will be
advertised in the weeks prior to the workshop.
Residents can also visit www.haveyoursaymoorabool to
participate in the surveys and the weekly forums.

Remembrance Day holds

a special place in the heart
of Bacchus Marsh resident,
David Childs (pictured),
who served his country on
deployment with the army.
After almost 53 years since
returning home, Mr Childs
said he still reflects on the
time spent from his post in
Cyprus.
Born in England on December 18, 1939, Mr Childs
was enlisted into the army
as a Regular at the age of
18. He departed home for
the first time in August
1958 and spent the next four
years and 322 days in the
Mediterranean.
However, it was Mr Childs
determination and intelligence that allowed him to
have a different experience
than most. At the beginning of his training he went
to speak to an old sergeant
who gave him a piece of
advice - take advantage of
the army. When you get out

to your first posting, ask

around and see if there is an
education officer, and go into
every course available.
And that is exactly what I
did, Mr Childs said.
Whist taking grade one and
two straight on top of each
other, he reached a grade
three education level over
a period of six months. He
then went on to make himself a partner of a unit stocktaker, who left, and another
six months later Mr Childs
had changed rank from a
private to a corporal.
Each night, Mr Childs recalled the men going out
drinking in groups of four,
where they were required
to wear their uniform and
carry their rifles with a sling
tied to their arm. However,
rather than going to the pub
each night, Mr Childs found
a different hobby to keep
him busy.
I knew that some of the
staff were married, so I went
to the staff sergeant and
asked about them, he said.

Soon enough, Mr Childs had

taken on a babysitting job.
While each man was paid 6
pounds per week, I managed
to save 5 pounds. I didnt go
out drinking, and this paid
me my way home, enabling
me to take six weeks of holidays every year, he said.
Although his hard work
was one of the more memorable moments of his time in
the army, Mr Childs said the
best part of all would have to
be making friends.
We would all stay up and
talk in the evenings, especially about our hometowns,
where we would boast about
what we had back home, he
said.
As training came to an end
in 1961, Mr Childs returned
home where he married the
love of his life, and ten years
later moved to Australia.
Now, a member of the Bacchus Marsh Returned and
Services League, he says he
looks forward to the celebration of Remembrance Day.
Each year we can celebrate

the true meaning and the

true spirit of ANZAC, he
said.
We can share the mutual
feeling that Australians and
New Zealands had with
each other in the sad and
dark days of all the enduring
conflicts up to now.
The Bacchus Marsh Remembrance Day ceremony
will commence on November 11 at 10:30am at the RSL
Hall, with poppy tokens being sold for a period of one
week from Monday, November 3.
We are all looking forward
to the day. As an organisation it is one of the busiest
times of the year and compared to other places we do
extremely well. People of
Bacchus Marsh are very generous in their support and
contributions, Mr Childs
said.
Poppy tokens will be sold at
the Village Shopping Centre,
Foodworks, IGA Darley and
outside the Westpac Bank.

Animal enforcement
bites into budget
EMPLOYEE benefits and fees for
animal enforcement and town
planning enforcement helped push
Moorabool Shire over budget in the
2013/14 financial year.
The Moorabool Shires recently
released 2013/14 Annual Report
states that the shire incurred
unexpected legal costs including
$98,000 for animal enforcement
legal proceedings, and $69,000 for

town planning enforcement.

Employee costs increased by
$594,000 (3.7%), while there was a
shortfall of $128,000 (0.5%) in the
rates and charges collected.
Moorabool Shire CEO Rob
Croxford said: Revenue growth
in 2013/14 was generally flat with
user fees, statutory fees and income
from developers lower than budget
expectations.

In terms of expenditures, council

has been successful in controlling
the
growth
in
operating
expenditures, Mr Croxford said.
Councils cash and current
assets were lower than prior years
mainly due to the reduction in
Federal Assistance Grants and
the completion of flood recovery
projects (for which council received
large grants in prior years.

The report also showed that

Moorabool Shire failed to meet
more than half of its performance
targets, including responding
to customer requests, poor
community consultation, and only
issuing 60 per cent of planning
permits
within
legislative
timeframes.
Mr Croxford said the meeting of
targets and community satisfaction

scores were not as good as we

planned for.

However, the shire surpassed its

expectations with the delivery of
aged and disability services (1,645
hours/month), the participation
rate in maternal and child health
services (88%) and number of
library items borrowed (126,855 for
the year).

The Plough

Mark Mills, chef/owner of The Plough in Myrniong and Trentham shares his love of the art of dry-aging beef. Dry-aged beef is
currently the rage on the food scene. It is much sought-after by discerning beef and steak lovers who are willing to seek out the dish.
Mark understands what makes dry-aged beef a cut above the rest. He learned the art of dry-aging beef by spending time with the
owner of Westside Meats, Bacchus Marsh. Mark explains, Joe shared his knowledge of dry-aging beef with me. He was integral in
helping with the design of my dry-aging room, as well as being the supplier of my black angus beef. Mark says he was inspired to
go into dry-aging beef after he experienced the flavours of dry-aged beef. I decided to invest in my own dry-aging room to ensure
that I could offer this quality product throughout my restaurants, says Mark. Mark explains how the dry-aging process changes the
beef through evaporation of moisture from the muscle, while creating greater concentration of the beefy flavour and taste. The
beefs natural enzymes also break down connective tissues in the muscle, resulting in more tender beef. The Plough offers various
cuts of beef that have been dry-aged for 49 days. The Plough @ Myrniong offers Scotch, Porterhouse and Eye Fillet while The Plough
@ Trentham offers Rump. Mark invites you to taste the difference you will not be disappointed.

Wise water wisdom

Western Water is encouraging older
customers to claim concessions and
other assistance on offer.
Western Waters general manager,
customer and community relations,
Graham Holt, said: We want to
ensure that people are getting any
concession they may be entitled to,
as well as accessing our assistance
programs where needed.
Western Water has released Water
Wisdom, a book containing advice
on concessions and other help for
older customers, that also captures
their memories and advice.
The book contains interviews with
12 seniors from around the Western
Water region about their experiences
of water, from boiling the copper for
clothes washing to filtering wrigglers
out of the drinking water.
Bacchus Marsh resident Pamela
Pinney was interviewed for the book
and said: Ive always been a water
miser, having originally had tanks.
I dont think most Australians really
appreciate what we have.
Water Wisdom is available at
libraries, senior citizens centres and
neighbourhood houses.

Obituary

Tom McKenzie 19.3.1930 to 11.10.2014

The Ballan Jockey Club has lost one of
its stalwarts, in life member and long
serving committee man Tom McKenzie.
Tom passed away on Saturday, October
11 at home in Ballan aged 84-years. It is
believed Tom passed away listening to
his favourite racing station 927.
Tom had a great love for horses in
general but particularly the racing
kind. Being a local it was only natural
that he would join the Ballan Jockey
Club which he did in the late 1960s. He
served the club with distinction, often
representing the BJC at many meetings,
conferences and racing award nights
which he enjoyed immensely.
Tom was very connected in the racing
industry knowing many jockeys,
trainers and owners. This was a positive
for the club as he always encouraged
these people to race their horses at
Ballan meetings.

Tom loved the punt. He was

particularly looking forward to his
beloved Melbourne and Ballan cups
this spring. Tom will be missed by his
many racing friends particularly at the
Southern Cross TAB which was known
as his office.
Tom saw racing from Ascot and
Singapore overseas, and Melbourne
to Kalgoorlie to Townsville in the
north. The racing bug took him all over
Australia and overseas.
It was not uncommon to bump into
Tom at the old non-TAB meetings in
the 1980s and 1990s at far away race
tracks scattered all over Victoria on a
Saturday. Tom always had a tip for you
and anyone else who was willing to
listen.

The Ballan Jockey Club bades farewell

to one of our true racing legends.
Rest in peace Tom.

Spring has Sprung

A Moorabool News Advertising Feature

Shop with Us

Spring is the season when a lawn

really needs some tender loving
care as temperatures rise and the
grass starts to grow, increasing its
reliance on water and fertilizer.
1. Laying turf and sowing seed:
Early spring is a good time for
turf laying because the risk of
frost is lower, making the soil
more workable. Spring is also
the ideal time for sowing seed
as the soil warms up and there is
usually enough rain to support
germination.
2. Feeding: A Spring feed is
essential to keep the lawn
looking green. There are many
pre-packaged feeds available the main ingredient is nitrogen,
which
encourages
strong
growth.
3. Watering: Toward the end of
spring it may be necessary to
water occasionally if the last
few months have been dry.
4. Mowing: Cut the grass regularly,
ensuring that the mower is
raised to its highest setting for
the rst few cuts.
5. Scarifying: Lightly scarify or remove the layer of dead
grass that has accumulated
throughout the winter - the
lawn, using a spring-tined rake
or a mechanical scarier to
remove dead grass (thatch).
6. Aerating: Use a fork or aerator
to spike the lawn: this allows
air to circulate at the grass roots
and breaks up compacted soil.
7. Laying turf: Spring is the ideal
time to lay turf as the weather
warms up and showers reduce
the need to watering.

The decline of biodiversity

Spring is in the air as is
Roundup. Some local
neighbours and in fact local
councils over this way like to
use this. It is easy and works
at getting rid of what we
humans refer to as weeds.
And it seems to have no side
effects - or does it. If you
find the following tale useful, please support ISIS (in
this case another ISIS which
stands for The Institute of
Science in Society) by having
a look at the ISIS bookstore
for other publications.
The following tale puts wind
turbines in some perspective. It would be good thing
to see if the Lal Lal group,
who refer to themselves as
an Environment Protection
Association, would organise a hall gathering over the
use of pesticides as a threat
to the environment in their
area.

In response to the unexplained disappearance of

birds and invertebrates
(such as bumblebees, honeybees and other pollinators)
as glyphosate herbicides
increased in the environment Rosemary Mason MB
ChB FRCA set aside one
acre of the field next to her
house in South Wales to
make a chemical-free nature
reserve.
To begin with she had considerable success. She photographed many insects that
were clearly benefitting from
wild flowers, often insignificant ones, which supplied
nectar and pollen resources
but which had been eliminated from many conventional nearby arable fields.
The reserve also provided
larval food plants for several
species of moths, butterflies
and bush crickets.

In 2006, Rosemary commissioned an overnight

moth count [4] from a professional naturalist.
He
found at about 6 am when
he emptied the traps 143
species of moths, attracted
to the bright lights from a
wide radius. Some species
trapped were in numbers up
to 500. Rosemary asked if it
was to do with the sunflowers which they had grown in
the field as a winter crop for
birds. No, he replied, it was
because they werent using
pesticides and had allowed
the small wildflowers to
flourish.
By 2013 Rosemary says she
knew that something was
wrong. The numbers and
species of invertebrates in
her reserve were declining.
Their behaviour was abnormal. In August, some of their

food plants were uniformly

affected with mildew. She
asked the professional naturalist to repeat the count of
moths. He confirmed her
worse fears, the biodiversity
had declined. He counted
only 51 species and the maximum number of the same
species was 50. By August
2014, a naturalist friend with
a reserve 3 miles away had
stopped doing moth counts.
He said there were so few
that it wasnt worth doing
the count.
Between 2006 and 2010,
Rosemary
photographed
many invertebrate species;
by 2014 most had vanished
In 2006, for example, at least
8 species of the family of
shield bugs were identified.
In April 2014, a few shield
bug young were seen. After
April Rosemary saw a small

number of adult shield bugs

but no ladybirds. On 22 August in the early morning,
she walked down the path
between the fence posts and
the hedge; there was not a
single spiders web.
Meanwhile in the USA a
farmer remarked, 100 years
ago, these same fields, these
prairies, were home to 300
species of plants, 60 mammals, 300 birds, hundreds
and hundreds of insects.
This soil was the richest, the
loamiest in the state. And
now, in these patches, there
is almost literally nothing
but one kind of living thing.
Weve erased everything
else. Theres something
strange about a farm that intentionally creates a biological desert to produce food
for one species: us. Its efficient, yes. But its so efficient

that the ants are missing, the

bees are missing, and even
the birds stay away. Somethings not right here. Our
cornfields are too quiet.
As
another
researcher
stated, Future historians
may well look back upon our
time and write, not about
how many pounds of pesticide we did or didnt apply,
but by how willing we are
to sacrifice our children and
future generations for this
massive genetic engineering experiment that is based
on flawed science and failed
promises just to benefit the
bottom line of a commercial
enterprise.

Dear Editor,
I just want to say how fortunate we are in Ballan to have
access to the new gym, pool
and spa at the hospital. These
great facilities are, of course,
primarily for rehab patients
and are used between 9am
and 4pm for that top priority. However we, the general
public, are lucky to be able to
go along in the early mornings and evenings and use
the shiney, new equipment
and /or relax in the warm
pool and spa. Its a real treat
to have a spa before bed
and many of us are taking
advantage of the gym to try
and lose weight and get fit!

Dear Editor,

enough wind for a wind

farm.

I heard an ABC report by

journalist Mark Colvin in
an interview with Will Ockenden on October 27, 2014.
The discussion was about a
$2 billion wind farm project
proposed by Hydro Tasmania on King Island. The plan
was to build 200 turbines
and generate 600 megawatts
of electricity, supplying the
national energy market via
an underwater high voltage
cable to the mainland.

Hydro Tasmanias director

of strategy and market development, Andrew Catchpole explained that the cancellation was not due to the
proposed changes to the Renewable Energy Target, but
due to falling demand for
electricity and with that fact
the price paid for the wind
energy would not have been
enough to sustain it.

He also said even if the

RET remained untouched
the numbers on the project
didnt work. The project
would not be viable.

Last week the project was

cancelled by the state-owned
power generator because
Chief Executive Steve Davey
said it was not economically
viable.

The point I am making is

that in comparision with
King Island where wind
resources are very good,

where we have many beautiful calm days with little

Median pricing explained

Home ownership is often
called the great Australian
dream and with more than
two thirds of the nation
owning their own home,
its no surprise that we have
a huge interest in all things
property-related. What is
our home worth? Is its value
increasing? Where is the
biggest capital growth?
One measure of house
prices commonly quoted is
median prices. Its easy to
assume this is the same as
the average price, but the
two are different. The median price is the middle price
in a list of sales. For instance
in a list of 11 prices, the sixth
price would be the median.
If there is a list with an even
number of prices, the middle
two would be averaged to
obtain the median.
A bigger list of prices pro-

of sales than average prices.

quarter, with lots of high
sales for example, can impact on a median.

Cricket
Club
Results
Round two concluded last
Friday night for the Under
12 with two wins, whilst
rain affected the Junior and
Senior competitions on Saturday with just the Under 16
Blue, third XI and fourth XI
matches getting underway.
The First and Second XIs,
along with the Under 16
Gold and Under 14s will
play one-day matches instead this Saturday.
Seniors
The Third XI lost the toss
and were sent in by East
Ballarat losing two quick
wickets to be reeling at 2/10.
Young Lion Drew Lock 71
and captain Beau Jamieson
39 steadied the innings with
a 71 run partnership, whilst
Craig McDonald provided
some middle order stability
with 27. Darley were eventually bowled out for 176 on a
wet and slow Darley Civic
Hub, and had 19 overs to
bowl at East. Darley fired
quickly to also have the visitors at 2/10, and another at
3/39 with East going in over
night at 3/42, youngsters
Daniel Hynes 2/20 off 8 and
Jye Stephenson 1/15 off 6
were the pick of the bowlers.
The Fourth XI won the toss
and sent East Ballarat into
bat at Russell Square. After
the home side looked like
setting up a decent score,
youngster Tyler Cox (3/20)
took his first senior wicket
with his first delivery to have
East at 3/91, and took another two wickets with the first
ball of successive overs to
have the home side at 5/93.
Seasoned campaigner Steve
Cornford also saluted with
4/20, whilst junior Baidon
Leonard (1/11) also took his
first club wicket in his first
senior wicket. The home
side were bowled out for 164
leaving Darley 15 overs for
the day, and the Lions are in
a brilliant position when the
resume at 36 without loss
with Father-Son duo Darren and Josh Hynes batting
without fault in trying conditions to set up for a very
gettable target this Saturday.

Juniors
The Under 16 Blue side
managed to get a morning of uninterrupted play
in after losing the toss and
being sent into bat by Wendouree. After a rocky start
at 3/24, Zac Butters and
Jack Burgess combined for
a 42 run partnership to get
the Darley innings back on
track. Jack Burgess continued his early season success
with the bat with 33 runs,
and was the highlight of the
innings in his 50th match
for the club. The home side
were eventually bowled out
for 124, but have the bowling stock available to defend
the total when Wendouree
begin their innings this Saturday morning.
The first Under 12 derby
between Darley Pride and
Darley Roar concluded in
great conditions on Friday
night in a close match that
was eventually won by
Pride. Roar finished with a
total of 148 with Noah Simmons 32, Hayden Nash 25*,
and Will Porter 18 the highlights with bat, whilst with
the ball for Pride were Bailey
Young 2/2 and Adam Azzopardi 2/19. Pride secured
the win after finishing on
171 runs, the highlights with
the bat being Aaron Cadman
27, Lachie Oakley 26*, and
Adam Azzopardi 24*. Will
Johnson starred with the
ball for Roar with 3/20, and
was well supported by Ryan
Densley 2/16 in what was a
terrific contest between the
two Darley sides.
The Darley Cubs had a
convincing win in their
away match against Melton
South at Mount Carberry.
The Cubs amassed 3/139 off
their allotted 40 overs, and
with tight bowling and fielding restricted the home team
to be just 8/84 from their 40
overs.

Big night for

Andy and Kate
Gath

Long Forest duo Andy and

Kate Gath chalked up a hattrick of wins at Tuesdays
Cranbourne fixture with
two recent stable additions
saluting the judge.
A former Kiwi filly by the
name of C C Chevron landed
the Condos Horse Transport
3-Y-0 Pace over 2080 metres
when making her Australian debut.
Not pushed from gate four
as the mobile gate pulled
away, C C Chevron was
allowed to find her feet
settling in the open, with
Dancing Da Vinci inside her
leading.
Cruising to the front on the
final bend, C C Chevron a
daughter of Art Major and
C C Lobell having her first
outing since September 14,
scored by 10.9 metres in advance of first starter Yackandandah (three back the
markers three wide home
turn), with Orbison Castle
(one/one) third. The mile
rate 2-02.
Honest five year old Village
Jasper/Andrells Love gelding Givemeaspell greeted
the judge in the Decron
Horse Care Pace for C0 class
over 2080 metres, returning
a mile rate of 2-02.3.
Despite racing without
cover from gate three for
the entire trip, Givemeaspell
proved too strong at the finish for the pacemaker Gotta

Another former New Zealander Qtown Rip Roaring

which has created a big
impression winning his
only two starts in Australia,
brought up the hat-trick
with a strong victory in the
Hyland Sportswear Pace for
C2 class over 1609 metres.
Surprisingly slow out of
gate two with Jare burning
away from gate six to lead by
a margin, Qtown Rip Roaring settled three back in the
running line with the second favourite Celebrity Lass
also slowly away from the
pole following him.
Moving a spot closer racing for the bell as Bettor
Than Best crossed the leader,
Qtown Rip Roaring when
eased three wide approaching the home turn gave his
supporters a scare as he took
a little time to get going.
Once balanced, Qtown Rip
Roaring charged to the wire
to score impressively by 4.1
metres from Better Than
Best and Mediation (three
back the markers) in a mile
rate of 1-57.8.
A four year old gelded son
of Courage Under Fire and
Zara Rose, Qtown Rip Roaring has fronted the starter
on 30 occasions, having won
only twice in his homeland.

Daylesford trainer Mick

Barby was victorious at
Cranbourne with improving
six year old In The Pocket/
Beauty Rainbow mare Pocket Of Fortune in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile
for T0 & T1 class over 2080
metres.
Driven by wife Anne-Maree
Conroy who works with father Bob, Pocket Of Fortune
lobbed beautifully one/one
from gate four with Opia
leading from the pole.

Taken three wide along the

back straight on the final occasion, Pocket Of Fortune
appeared to have the race in
his keeping a long way out,
but only had a half neck to
spare at the finish over Opia
which fought on gamely in a
rate of 2-05.7. The Dutchman
finished third after trailing
the winner before moving
away from the markers in
the last lap to be held up
momentarily.
Coimadai trainer Steve
Zammits recent stable addition Looka A Moral put
an end to most quaddie takers, when successful at start
number 100 in the Diamond
Rewards Join Now Trotters
Handicap for T3 or better
class over 2200 metres at Ballarat on Thursday.
Given a sweet passage from
barrier four trailing Living
Bonus (barrier three) after
jumping straight to the front,
Looks A Moral at Supertab
odds of $45.00 gained an inside passage in the shadows
of the post to blouse Living
Bonus by a metre in a rate of
2-06.2, with Death Defying
an eye catching third after
racing in the open for new
trainer Kari Males.
It was Looks A Morals 8th
victory.
The red hot favourite Roy
Hobbs galloped away hopelessly from the 10 metre
mark and was tailed off.
Friday nights Tabcorp
Park meeting belonged to
Goulburn Valley reinsman
Nathan Jack who drove a
career best metropolitan
tally of four winners at
headquarters.
Those to score were Call
Me Bond (trainer Mick

Hughes Cranbourne) in the

Sheron Park Pace Final for
C2 & C3 class, Sophies Ideal
(Wayne Potter Avenel)
the Harness Breeders (Vic)
Tailamade Lombo for M0
class (mares), Scruffy Major
(Gary & Debbie Quinlan
Drouin) the Maryborough
Cup Sunday Pace for M0
class and Jadahson (Emma
Stewart Smythes Creek)
the Farewell Adrian (Ace)
Barlow Pace for M2 & M3
class.
Three of the winners were
in the TAB Quaddie which
paid a massive dividend of
$107, 265.90.
Other winners on a good
night of racing were Bellas
Delight (Kari Males Bolinda) with Greg Sugars in the
sulky, Mia Mosca (Chris
Alford Bolinda), Yeadan
(Beau Tindale Melton)
with Rod Petroff, Lombo
Flashlight (Jodi Quinlan

Manning aboard.

Results - Round 5

Hayden Thompson broke the Under 16 Javelin record.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The heavy overnight rain

and early morning showers
didnt look promising for
Little Athletics last Saturday
morning, but fortunately the
inclement weather cleared
in time for the athletes to
start their weekly competition. Although a little cool
and windy they managed
to get through the majority
of the program just as the
rain came down. The Under
10 boys will conclude their
high jump this Saturday.
Centre Captain, Hayden

Thompson (Eagles) set two

new records in the Under
16 age group. The first in
the 1500m, in tough conditions, Hayden finished well
to cross the line in 5:03.62
mins. In the Javelin, Hayden
threw consistently, setting a
final record distance of 35.82
metres.
The Centre congratulates
Blues athlete, Jarvis Miles,
who has been named in the
Vic Team to represent School
Sport Victoria at the Australian Primary School Track
and Field Championships
to be held in Penguin, Tasmania from November 27 to
December 2. Jarvis won gold
at the Primary School Sport
Victoria
Championships
held last Monday at Lakeside Stadium with a throw

of 35.69m in the 9-10 year old

Discus.
Some BMLAC athletes will
be competing at the Victorian All Schools Track & Field
Championships this weekend.
Hayley Whitehand
(Dolphins) will be attempting to continue on from her
recent success at the Government Schools Track & Field
Championships last month,
where she won gold in the
Under 14 Javelin. Hayley
will be competing in Javelin,
Discus and Shot Put at the
State Championships. These
Championships are the selection trials for the Australian All Schools Championships to be held in Adelaide
from December 5-7.

Premier Division
Avenue v Central Wendouree (H)
From the outset Sam Shannahans rink showed the
way, getting away to a 17-4
early break on their opposition. All other rinks were
tight early with the lead on
individual rinks see-sawing.
With occasional rain and
hail falling, combined with a
strong southerly, conditions
were difficult for both teams.
Avenue held sway for most
of the day, the home team
always snapping at Avenues
heels. Sam Shannahans rink
went on to record a fine 3024 win, Martin Sheas rink
continued their good form
with an excellent 25-21 win,
whilst Andrew Myers rink
eventually went down 2421. The overall result went
down to the wire, with
scores tied after 99 ends and
Glenn Sargents rink left to
finish proceedings. Whilst
holding shot for most of the
final end, it was the Central
Wendouree skipper with
his last bowl who broke
Avenues heart, finding his
way through a split to roll
Avenues shot bowl out with
the final delivery of the day,
gaining a 24-16 win over
Glenns rink and a 93-92
overall win to devastate the
Avenue team. So near yet so
far.
Next week Avenue host
Bareena, another team in a
similar position on the ladder, and are looking for a
win to wipe away the disappointment of the past two
weeks close losses.
Final score Avenue 92 lost
Central Wendouree 93
Division 3 - hosted Creswick and went into the game
determined to continue their
unbeaten season. Avenue
was expected to win and

win well given Creswicks

position at the bottom of the
ladder, however that was not
the way things turned out.
Avenue led by Bill Hawkens
rink (13 shots up) and Frank
Pomeroys rink (4 shots up)
amassed a sufficient lead to
cover the other two rinks
which both recorded narrow
losses.
Thankfully after the final
bowl had been delivered
Avenue was 11 shots up on
their gallant opponents, to
retain their unbeaten record
this season. It did however
remind all players that no
one assumes anything in
bowls and positions on the
ladder are irrelevant and
anyone can be beaten on a
given day.
Final score - Avenue 100 def
Creswick 89

Division 5 - Travelled to
Invermay to face their unbeaten opponents in a top of
the table clash. The Avenue
players soon found out why
their opponents are undefeated this season (after
winning the premiership in
Div 6 last year) and trailed
overall for much of the day.
Only Laurie Burkes rink
was successful winning by 3
shots, with the other 3 rinks
all struggling against their
opponents. Dave McKendricks rink was behind 15-3
after 8 ends, however they
recovered to only go down
by 6 shots. Peter Glass rink
and Bob Delaneys rink gave
up early leads to go down by
10 and 15 shots respectively.
The loss drops the side from
second to fifth on the ladder with the side needing to
re-group before next weeks
game.
Final score - Avenue 90 lost
Invermay 118
Division 8 - After two
solid wins over the past

two weeks, Avenue were

hoping to continue their
winning form against Invermay at Avenue. It must be
remembered that this side
experiences the most weekly
changes of personnel of any
Avenue side due to unavailability of players in the higher grades and promotion of
players upwards.
This week they played a
team two spots lower on the
ladder, yet they recorded a
59 shot win, with all rinks
up.
For Avenue it was pleasing to see the introduction
of two new bowlers playing their first ever games
of pennant. Both Ray Barnett and Graeme Copeman
played well in their respective rinks wins by 8 and 23
shots, which were skipped
by Cherald Sinclair and Lyn
Robinson. A ten shot win by
Dominic Borattos rink and
an 18 shot win by Ron Millingtons rink meant the side
gained a valuable 18 points
for the day and second spot
on the ladder.
Final score - Avenue 128 def
Invermay 69

In Midweek pennant Division 1 secured a 34 shot

victory over Smeaton, with
all rinks up. Di Hardiments
rink led the way with a 22
shot victory, closely followed by Glenys Kays rink
(10 shots) and Doreen Connells rink (2 shots) which
propelled the side into 4th
spot on the ladder.
Division 2 are still finding the going tough in the
higher grade this year and
succumbed to Clunes by 36
shots., with all rinks down
on the day. Nonetheless the
side is keeping positive in its
fight to avoid relegation and
that can only be done by securing some wins, hopefully
starting this week.

The ten-year-old overcame
head winds to throw a personal best distance of 35.69
metres in his age group on
October 27.
His father and coach Dion
Miles said based on those
distances and his age group,
Jarvis would currently be
ranked three in the country.
Only 31cm separate the second and third ranking.
Mr Miles said Jarvis has been
involved with the Bacchus
Marsh Little Athletics Club
since he was five-years-old
and he excelled in the discus
and shotput events. In 2013
he won silver medals in the
Under 9 discus and Under 9
shotput at the Victorian little

athletics championships.
This year he broke the regional schools record for discus
with a throw of 35.27 metres.
Mr Miles said his son trained
twice a week and hes got an
exceptional technique.
Its absolutely about technique, he said.
Jarvis said you also had to be
really strong and do lots of
practice.
The Bacchus Marsh Primary School student said the
best part about competing
in discus was releasing the
discus and hearing everyone
clapping.
He said his inspiration was
his dad, who once represented Victoria and Australia
in discus and long-distance
running.
Jarvis will now travel to
Tasmania on November 29
to compete in the National
School Sports Championships.
