Monday October 27, 2014
Materials:
Agenda - DASH *Spock Stamp*
Copy of The Hunger Games (each student)
Copy of Chpt. 7/8 Reading Comprehension Check *Class Copies* (write answers on a separate sheet of
paper in complete sentences).
Chpt. 8 vocab SMART Board game & pre-reading packet.

Opener: (Standard #1 New learning is connected to prior learning and experience)
6 Trait Writing Packet

Concept/Skill Development: (Standard #2 Learning tasks have high cognitive demand for diverse learners)
(Standard #3 Students engage in meaning-making through discourse and other strategies) (Standard #4
Students engage in metacognitive activity)
Students will read and comprehend literature
Students will compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of time
Students will determine a theme
Students will determine word meanings

Guided/Independent/Group Practice: (Standard #3 Students engage in meaning-making discourse and other

Pass out novel to each student.
Review what we read from the novel the day before. (3-5 mins.)
Students will continue silent reading of Chpt. 7 The Hunger Games answering comprehension questions
on separate sheet of paper. (30 mins.)
Play SMART Board game with Chpt. 8 vocab (10-12 mins.)

Assessment: (Standard #5 Assessment is integrated into instruction)
Informal assessment on review of novel.
Informal assessment on Chpt. 7 comprehension check questions graded for completion

Scholastic Scope Video
Frankenstein dramatization
Critical-Thinking Questions handout

KWL chart on board on Frankenstein:
o What do the students know about the story?
o What do the students want to know?
o What did the students learn?

Guided/Independent/Group Practice: (Standard #3 Students engage in meaning-making discourse and other
strategies) Standard #4 Students engage in metacognitive activity)
6 Trait Writing packet (5-8 mins.)
KWL chart on board on Frankenstein:
o What do the students know about the story?
o What do the students want to know?
o What did the students learn? (10-12 mins.)
Show Scholastic Scope video/Discuss (3-5 mins.)
Pass out Frankenstein dramatization to each student
Read/Annotate dramatization whole class. Pausing to discuss. (20-25 mins.)
Pass out Critical-Thinking Questions & Whos the Monster handout to each student. Work on until end
of class
o Emphasize textual evidence

o What do the students know about the story?
o What do the students want to know?

6 Trait Writing packet (5-8 mins.)
Add to KWL chart on board on Frankenstein:
o Review discussions & reading from yesterday
o Keep chart and add to it each day when reading/discussing the story. (5-8 mins.)
Finish answering Critical-Thinking Questions & Whos the Monster questions on handout
o Emphasize textual evidence (15-20 mins.)
