PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners,

Our Call to Holiness

We have officially entered the Fall
season of ALL SAINTS AND ALL
SOULS, a good time to think back on
the wonderful proclamation coming
out of the Second Vatican Council
called:
THE UNIVERSAL CALL
TO HOLINESS
Thus it is evident to everyone,
that all the faithful of Christ of
whatever rank or status, are called
to the fullness of the Christian life
and to the perfection of charity
[holiness]; by this holiness, as
such, a more human manner of
living is promoted in this earthly
society.
In order that the faithful may reach this
perfection, they must use their strength
accordingly as they have received it, as a gift
from Christ. They must follow in His
footsteps and conform themselves to His
image seeking the will of the Father in all
things. They must devote themselves with all
their being to the glory of God and the
service of their neighbor. In this way, the
holiness of the People of God will grow into
an abundant harvest of good, as is
admirably shown by the life of so many
saints in Church history. The classes and
duties of life are many, but holiness is
onethat sanctity, which is cultivated by
all who are moved by the Spirit of God, and

who obey the voice of the Father and

worship God the Father in spirit and in
truth. These people follow the poor Christ,
the humble and cross-bearing Christ in
order to be worthy of being sharers in His
glory. Every person must walk
unhesitatingly according to his own personal
gifts and duties in the path of living faith,
which arouses hope and works through
charity.
VATICAN II, Council Document:
Lumen Gentium 40, 41

Isnt it interesting that the document,

after building up the call to holiness,
states that the outcome will be a
more human manner of living. It
almost sounds anticlimactic. Just
human? Except that human is the
key to holiness and sainthood.
Holiness is, after all, simply living
according to the order of our
creation. Human is somehow more
completely in the image and likeness
of God; more so than any other part
of Gods Creation. St. Paul says,
Behave as God, for you are Gods
children. What better compliment
for parents than to be told that their
children are so good, which is not a
surprise, because their parents are so
good and passed that goodness on to
their children. So it is with God, Our
Heavenly Father, and uswhen we

think as God thinks and do what

God would have us do, we honor
Gods divine parenting of us.
On the other hand, there are far too
many examples of humanity falling
drastically short of living Gods
intended goodness and of
participating in the unholy, the
unthinkable, the total lack of good,
which we call evil. This is because, in
order to be fully created in Gods
own image, we necessarily have to
have free willthe ability to freely
turn our backs on Gods will for the
good. We call this sin. Interesting
too is the fact that we humans,
sometimes in an attempt to insult,
will refer to each other as something
less than human; e.g., Youre
stubborn as a mule or Youre cold
as a fish.
As we enter the time of ALL SAINTS/
ALL SOULS then, let us remember to
make regular our prayers for Gods
mercy upon all the souls of the
departed and for Gods grace and
blessings upon our own journey to
sainthood.
Above all, may our
humanity honor the Creator in such a
way as to further, in any way that we
can, Gods kingdom on earth as it is
in heaven.

Msgr. Richard

Saint of the Week

St. Charles Borromeo
St. Charles Borromeo is
associated with reform.
He lived during the time of the
Protestant Reformation and had a
hand in the reform of the whole
Church during the final years of
the Council of Trent (1545-63).
Although he belonged to nobility
and was related to the powerful
Medici family, he desired to devote
himself to the Church. His uncle,
Cardinal de Medici, elected pope in
1559 as Pius IV, made Charles
cardinal-deacon and administrator
of the Archdiocese of Milan while
he was still a layman and a young
student. Because of his intellectual
qualities he was entrusted with
several offices connected with the
Vatican and later appointed
secretary of state with
responsibility for the papal states.
The untimely death of his elder
brother brought Charles to a
decision to be ordained a priest,
despite relatives insistence that he
marry. He was ordained at 25 and
soon became bishop of Milan.
The reform needed in every phase
of Catholic life among both clergy
and laity was initiated at a
provincial council of all the
bishops under him. Specific
regulations were drawn up for
bishops and other clergy. Charles
took the initiative in giving good
example. He gave most of his
income to charity and imposed
severe penances upon himself.
During the plague and famine of
1576, he tried to feed 70,000
people daily. He borrowed large
sums of money that required years
to repay. Civil authorities fled the
plague, but he stayed in the city,
helping those in need.
Work and the heavy burdens of his
high office affected his health. He
died at the age of 46.

Ban Angoorly, formerly a St. Rita

Parishioner but now a member of
St. Philips Parish, was born in Iraq,
emigrated with her family to London
in 1980, and subsequently moved to
the United States when she married.
Ban spoke to us of the horrorsand
that is the only word to describe
current eventsof the war against
Catholics being waged in Iraq and
Syria by ISIS. She read to us from an
email from a nun working as a
missionary in a town about 30 miles
from Mosul. The nuns email begins
Fall down on your knees. Pray! The
nun relays that all Catholic/Christian
homes are being marked with an N
for Nazarean. Children of all ages,
including infants, have been pulled
from their homes and murdered in
front of their parents. The parents are
then given a choice of renouncing
Christianity or leaving immediately,
with only the clothing on their backs.
The nun wonders if she can remain
faithful if she is called to be a martyr.
This report is not of an isolated event
but a repeat of many similar events
during the past 4 months. We were all
asked to pray for the Catholics in this
area; to ask our church and civic
leaders to focus attention on the
tragedy; and to help spread the news.

Q: We have heard that the Design Commission

is putting together a Master Plan. What is a

Master Plan and Why will it benefit St. Rita?
A. A Master Plan is a road map for the future, a long
range guide directing development and future growth.
Of course, here at St. Rita, the true Master Plan for
our parish is our Mission Statement and Pastoral Plan.
These call us to live our lives as Christians following
the Gospel.

7:30 pm Parish Office Meeting Room

The Design Commission is working on a Facilities

Master Plan. This, too, is a long range plan that will
help the parish make decisions today and in the future.
A facilities master plan provides a cohesive framework
for the parish and frequently evolves over the years.
The information contained in the Plan is intended to
guide decisions related to use of land and facilities,
based on our mission, and to promote good
stewardship of resources.

Before any construction or improvements to our

been in the process of fulfilling the required elements,
including multiple surveys, studies and assessments.
