Flexible Hoses for Natural Gas

Service - Metallic
Replaces: n/a

Overview
This standard specifies the requirements for metallic flexible hoses for
use in natural gas service up to 323 mm OD (NPS 12). This standard
adds to, replaces, and/or expands upon certain requirements stated in
the identified industry standard, and is to be read in conjunction with it.
Hoses over 60 mm OD (NPS 2) must meet with the approval of the
FortisBC (Natural Gas) (FBC (Gas)) Engineering Design group. Order
requirements for metallic flexible hoses will be detailed on the
specification sheet (Attachment 1) located at the end of this standard.
These hoses may be intended for permanent, intermittent, or temporary
service conditions.
This standard does not apply to small diameter hoses 26 mm OD (NPS
) and less, used in very low flow applications to sense and calibrate
FBC (Gas) stations and customer meter sets (refer to MAT 15-03
Flexible Hoses for Natural Gas Service - Calibration)

Service Information and Environment

Metallic flexible hoses may be used in permanent installations when
permitted by the engineering design, for temporary purposes. The fluid
carried is sweet natural gas normally operating at a temperature of 16
C. The operating range is from -10 to 35 C.
The maximum operating pressure of metallic flexible hoses may be
specified up to and including 14,900 kPag (2,160 psig).

Standards of Construction
All metallic flexible hoses must be constructed to a recognized standard
for natural gas service. Unless another acceptable standard is
nominated, all hoses must be designed and manufactured to ASME
B31.3 (considering Appendix F, Appendix X, and EJMA Standards),
and must have a CRN registered with the BC Safety Authority.
For inside diameters no greater than 100 mm (typically NPS 4) and
design pressures no greater than 3,450 kPag (500 psig), hoses may be
constructed to comply with ULC/ORD-C356 and registered with CSA.
For nominal inside diameters no greater than 300 mm (typically NPS
12) and design pressures no greater than 25,300 kPag (3,670 psig),
hoses may be designed and manufactured to ISO 10380, and must have
a CRN registered with the BC Safety Authority.

For nominal inside diameters no greater than 150 mm (typically NPS 6)

and design pressures no greater than 2,410 kPag (350 psig)* hoses may
be designed, manufactured, and tested to CGA CR96-001 and registered
with CSA.
* For nominal diameters over 50 mm (NPS 2), hoses will have a
reduced pressure rating of 200 or 250 psig as per CGA CR96-001.
For nominal inside diameters no greater than 20 mm (typically NPS )
and working pressures no greater than 34,500 kPag (5,000 psig), hoses
may be designed, manufactured, and tested to ECE R110 Class 0
Standard, and must have a CRN registered with the BC Safety
Authority.

Material Requirements
The hose portion must be constructed entirely of stainless steel. End
connections may be approved grades and forms of carbon steel,
stainless steel, or other materials as specified on the order (see below).

End Connections
End connections may be specified as follows:
standard ANSI flanges up to class 900 (PN 150), meeting ASME
B16.5 for raised face flanges
standard tapered pipe threads up to NPT 2 (60 mm OD), meeting
ASME B1.20.1
37 flared hydraulic tube fittings up to NPT 2, meeting SAE 514
Section 1
Where threaded end connections are nominated, the pipe wall thickness
must be no less than schedule 80. All end connections must comply
with ASTM A 105 for carbon steel and ASTM A 403 for stainless steel,
and be matched to the maximum pressure rating of the hose assembly.
Carbon steel end connections must be coated to protect from corrosion.
The use of proprietary fittings must be approved only upon review and
acceptance by FBC (Gas) Design Engineering Group. The use of quickconnect couplings is prohibited.

Supplementary Requirements
A special coating, colouring, or abrasion-resistant covering may be
specified.

Certification
For all requested designs, the vendor must have the appropriate
CGA/CSA and/or BC Safety Authority (CRN) certification for design,
size, pressure rating, end connections, materials of construction, and
style of non-metallic flexible hose.

Factory Testing
FBC (Gas) reserves the right to witness all factory tests. Before any
measurements are taken, the hose must stabilize at the designated
pressure for no less than 2 minutes. All metallic flexible hoses must be
factory tested as follows:
hydrostatic tested to a minimum 1.5 times the rated design pressure
elongation data must be established for each hose that is designated
for intermittent or temporary service. This will include
measurements of the overall hose length (+/- 3 mm or 1/8,
excluding the end connections) at the following pressures:
70 kPag (10 psig)
design pressure
1.5 times design pressure

All test results must be documented.

Product Marking
All metallic flexible hoses must have affixed a permanent metal tag
with the following information:

name of manufacturer
design standard
CGA/CSA and/or CRN approval designation and category
date of manufacture
nominal diameter and length
design pressure rating
temperature rating at design pressure
minimum bend radii (static and dynamic)
unique serial number

Shipping Requirements
The vendor must provide protection for the end connections. For
diameters over NPS 2, all hoses must be individually crated prior to
shipping. Preferred crating will be to use a single, long coffin type crate
to allow each hose to remain in unbent during transportation. Longer
hoses may be coiled to no less than 1.5 times their minimum static bend
radius and packaged and shipped via a suitably-sized crate or pallet. All
hose shipments must be prepared so as to prevent damage to hoses
during transportation and handling.

Documentation
As applicable, the vendor must provide two copies of a data package
that contains the following documents:
name and contact information of the manufacturer
the certification document of the hose design registration from
CGA/CSA and/or BC Safety Authority (CRN)
the Certificate of Construction from the manufacturer
a copy of the design drawing
a copy of the test certificate and all pressure test data
a copy of all elongation test data
all relevant material test reports
a copy of the nameplate
