12 Facts about the Fabricated Fast of

Ashura
Bani Umayyah (Umayad) forced people to celebrate the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) as a blessed day, and
encouraged people to buy and store their annual food on that day and to fast that day as Sunnah, by fabricating
traditions in this regard which were solely designed to overshadow and to cover up the great catastrophe of the
slaughtering the household of Prophet
(PBUH&HF).
To make people believe that Ashura is a blessed day, day fabricated that it was in that day when Allah saved Bani
Israel from Pharaoh. this is while Moses (AS) and his companions were saved and passed the Nile river in the
month of Rabiul-Awwal.
They also invented that the repentance of Adam was accepted on that day, while it was accepted in the month of
Zil-Hajjah. They say that it was the day that Jonah (Yunos) was saved from the body of fish and the ark of Noah
was settled on earth while it was on the 18th of Zil-Hajjah. All those traditions were fabricated By Bani Umayyah to
cover their crimes.
But scientific research caught their different lies. Shukar al-Hamdolillah.
Let us first read this fabricated tradition:
First Version:

Sahih Bukhari, Book 60, Volume 6, Hadith 202:

Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura' (10th of
Muharram) and they said, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh," On that, the Prophet
said to his companions, "You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe
the fast on this day."
Second Version:

Bukhari, Book 60, Volume 6, Hadith 31:

Narrated Aisha: During the Pre-lslamic Period of ignorance the Quraish used to observe fasting on the day of
'Ashura', and the Prophet himself used to observe fasting on it (ashura) too. But when he came to Medina, he
fasted on that day and ordered the Muslims to fast on it. When (the order of compulsory fasting in ) Ramadan was
revealed, fasting in Ramadan became an obligation, and fasting on 'Ashura' was given up, and whoever wished to
fast (on it) did so, and whoever did not wish to fast on it, did not fast.

Post Mortem of this Fabricated Tradition

1. It is very difficult to tell a perfect lie. There are always Contradictions when you tell a lie. Same
Page 1

Wilayat.Net

happened in this case where one paid fool of Bani Umayyah fabricated that Prophet (saw) started it
due to Bani Israel, while other fool linked it to the Period of ignorance.
2. We all know why we celebrate Eid-ul-Adha (day of sacrifice of Hadhrat Ismael), why we celebrate
Ramadhan (Quran tells (Verse 2:185) that the month of Ramazan is that in which the Quran was
revealed).
But why then Aisha was so much ignorant about the incident of Bani Israel & Moses?
The tradition claims that Prophet & Sahaba were constantly observing the fast of Ashura during full 10
years of Prophets life in Madina, so there is absolutely no logical reason as to why Aisha was ignorant
of this.
3. Moreover, why was Prophet following the Custom of days of Ignorance?
4. There was NO Islamic Calendar during Prophet (saw) era. But there was Arabic Calendar. It was the
Era of Umar Ibn Khattab, where proposal came about Islamic Calendar. Ali Ibn Abi Talib recommended
to start Islamic Calendar with the 1st of Muharram of the year when Prophet (saw) migrated to Madina.
5. But on 1st of Muharram of Islamic Calendar, Prophet Muhammad (saw) was still in Mecca. All agree
that Prophet (saw) migrated to Madina long after it in the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal. (After Muharram
comes the month of Saffar and then the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal).
(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 58, Number 245: . (when Prophet reached Madina) So all the
Muslims rushed to their arms and received Allah's Apostle on the summit of Harra. The Prophet turned
with them to the right and alighted at the quarters of Bani 'Amr bin 'Auf, and this was on Monday in the
month of Rabi-ul-Awal.)
Therefore, it was impossible that Prophet (saw) had seen Jews fasting on Ashura at his arrival to
Madina. This proves this story to be totally fabricated one.

6. Moreover, the modern scientific study of Jewish Scriptures also reveals that people who fabricated this
tradition were telling a blatant lie.
Do the Jews fast on the day when Bani Israel were saved by Allah? No, it is a blatant lie. Jews dont
have absolutely any Fasting day for this event.
Here is the List of days when Jews Fast.
http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Holidays/Fast_Days/fast_days.html

7. The next lame excuse by Modern Apologists of this fabricated tradition is to claim that it refers to jewish
Yom Kippur which happened on 10th of Tishri month of Jews.
Once again, this claim is without any proof and totally wrong.
First contradiction is this that the 10th of Tishri has nothing to do with saving of Bani Israel from
Pharoah, but it is the day the children of Israel paid atonement for worshipping the calf when Prophet
Moses and some companions went to Mount Sinai. As a result of this incident, the Jews fast on the 10t
of Tishri.
Secondly, scientific research shows that 10th Tishri was months away from 10th Muharram of 1st
Islamic Hijri year.
Here are two Scientific Tools for you to calculate it yourself.
Gregorian-Hijri Dates Converter (Online Link)
Hebrew Date Converter (Online Link)
* 10th Muharram of 1st Islamic Hijri year is equivalent to 25 July 622 C.E. (+ One day Error) [link]
* 10th of Tishri, 4383 of Jewish Calendar is equivalent to 23 September 622 C.E. (+10 days error) [link]
As you can see both of them months away with each other and there is no chance that they correspond
Page 2

Wilayat.Net

to each other in that year.

8. The Apologists of this fabricated Tradition further make a lame excuse that perhaps Prophet (saw)
didnt see Jews in the first year of his arrival, but in later coming years.
But this excuse is also contradicting the facts.
Fact is this that Fast of Ramadhan became obligatory in 2nd year after migration (See Tafsir of Verse
2:185 where all Muffasirrin of Quran agree upon it that this verse about Ramadhan fasting was
revealed in year 2 A.H.).
But the only time the 10th of Tishri corresponded to the 10th of Muharram was in the 29th year after
Hijra (i.e. not even in life Time of Prophet Muhammad (saw)).

9. Another problem with 10th Tishri assumption is this that the month in which God delivered the
Israelites from Pharaoh was month of Abib (i.e. modern Nissan), as the Bible clearly says: "Observe
the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the Lord thy God: for in the month of Abib the Lord thy
God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night." (Deut., 16:1).
And it is also impossible that month of Abib corresponded with Month of Muharram of 1st or 2nd Year
of Islamic Hijri Calendar.
* 10th Muharram of 1st Islamic Hijri year is equivalent to 25 July 622 C.E. (1 day error) [link]
* 10th of Abib, 4382 of Jewish Calendar is equivalent to 30 March 622 C.E. (10 days error) [link]
You can see that there is the difference of months between them and in whole remaining life of Prophet
(saw) in Madina, they never corresponded with each other.
Note:
Moreover, 10th of Abib (Nissan) is not even the day when Bani Israel departed from Egypt. Rather, the
savior of the children of Israel occurred on the 15th of Nissan in the Jewish calendar and the 15th of
Nissan in the 1st year of Hijra corresponded to the 23rd of Ramadan.

10.Lame Excuse: The Jewish Calendar could have been distorted (Tehrif) after the death of Prophet
Muhammad (saw) and thus Jewish Calendar is not reliable.
Answer:
No doubt that there were distortions in the normal Jewish scriptures.
But as far as specifically the Jewish Calendar & the Custom of Fasting is concerned, then NO
distortion has taken place in them after the advent of Islam, but both the Jewish Calendar & the
Custom of Fasting stayed the same since advent of Islam.
Actually they stayed same centuries before Islam. Here one Link about Jewish Calendar and another
Link about short history of Custom of Fasting, while as far as Jewish Calendar is concerned, then
there is absolutely no doubt that Jews were using this same Calendar centuries before Prophet
Muhammad (saw). Therefore, if anyone claims that the Jewish Calendar and the Custom of Fasting
have been distorted after 1st Hijri of Islamic Calendar, then such person is a plain stupid.

11.The Truth: 10th of Muharram is a day of sorrow and great calamities for Jews too
Subhan Allah! The truth is this that 10th of Muharram of 1st Hijri was not the day of joy for the Jews.
But a big Surprise, that was the day of great calamities and sorrow for Jews too.
Tisha B'Av is also a fasting day of Jews on 9th of the Jewish month Av.
Strange thing is this that this Tisha B'Av corresponded perfectly to the 10th of Muharram of 1st & 2nd
Hijri of Islamic Calendar.
1. 10th muharram of muslim is equivalent to Sunday 25 July 622 C.E. (+1 day error according to
Islamic Software maker). (Link).
2. 9th of Av, 4382 of jewish Calendar is equivalent to Sunday 25 July 622 C.E (Link).
Tisha B'Av: The Saddest day in Jewish History
Page 3

Wilayat.Net

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tisha_B%27Av
The fast commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem,
which occurred about 655 years apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date. Although primarily
meant to commemorate the destruction of the Temples, it is also considered appropriate to
commemorate other Jewish tragedies that occurred on this day, most notably the expulsion of the Jews
from Spain in 1492, one of the concluding events of the Iberian Reconquista. Accordingly, the day has
been called the "saddest day in Jewish history".....
Note:
Another very strange thing is this that Jeremiah (see Jer. 52:1213) dates the destruction of the First
Temple to the tenth of Av (52:12ff.), while there is, however, no biblical witness for the ninth.
Subhan Allah!
Allah is the greatest.
[Quran 3:54] But they (the unbelievers) contrived a plot, and God did the like; and God's plan is the
best.

12.Was Prophet sad upon killing of Hussain or happy like Bani Umayyah & Present day Nasibies?
O Muslims!
Do you remember what your Prophet (saw) advised you about his family (Ahl al-Bayt)? Following
tradition of Sahih Muslim is telling that Prophet (saw) advised the Ummah "3 Times" to look how they
behave with his Ahl al-Bayt after him.

Sahih Muslim, Kitab fada'il al-Sahabah:

O people, I am only a human being and I am about to respond to the messenger of my Lord [i.e. the
call of death]. I am leaving behind Two Precious Things (Thaqalayn) among you. The first of the two is
the Book of Allah. In it is guidance and light. So get hold of the Book of Allah and adhere to it." (The
narrator, Zayd ibn al-Arqam said: Then he urged and motivated (us) regarding the Book of Allah . Then
he said), "And my Ahl al-Bayt (family). I urge you to remember Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt. I urge
you to remember Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt. I urge you to remember Allah regarding my Ahl alBayt.
But O Muslims! Just tell even after this advice of "3 times" still what happened to the beloved grandson
Hussain of Prophet?

Sunnan Ibn Majah, Kitab-ul-Fitn (Online Link for Original Arabic Version):
Narrated by Alqamah from Abdullah bin Masood:
One day we were sitting with Holy Prophet(s) when some children from the house of Bani Hashim
came there. When the Holy Prophet(s) saw them, tears welled up in his eyes and he became pale. Ibn
Masood said that he told the Holy Prophet(s) "Your face reflects anxiety".The Holy Prophet(s)
stated:"Exalted God has granted us,the Ahlulbait, Hereafter instead of worldly pleasure. After me, soon
my Ahlulbait will face calamity, hardship and misery till people having black flags will rise from East
and seek justice, which will be denied them. They will wage war, they will be supported and will be given
what they were demanding. They will not accept until it is handed over to one from our Ahlulbait (i.e.
Mahdi) .He will fill the earth with justice as it was filled with injustice. Whoever amongst you is alive at
that period, should try to reach them even if he has to tread on ince in that pursuit."
(al-Sanadi wrote in commentary of Ibn Majah that this same tradition has also been recorded in
Mustadrak of al-Hakim through another chain of Umar bin Qais -- Hakam --I braheem)
Saudi Mufti, Al-Albaani records a Sahih Hadith:

Page 4

Gabriel came to me and informed me that my Ummah will kill my son Hussain. I asked: This
Hussian?. He (s) replied: Yes he then brought me some of its soil that was red. Narrated by Umm alFadhal bint al-Harith that she went to the Holy Prophet (s) and said: O Prophet (s), I have seen an
unclear dream tonight. He (s) asked: What is it? She replied: I saw that as if a part of your body was
cut off from you and was placed upon my chest. He (s) said: You have seen something good.
Inshallah Fatimah will bear a baby boy and he will be upon your chest. So Fatima gave birth to
Hussain and he was on my chest as the Prophet (s) had notified me. On one day I went to the Holy
Prophet (s) and put Hussain on his chest then he turned his face to the side and I witnessed his (s)
eyes flowing with tears. I asked: Prophet of Allah (s), may parents be sacrificed for you, what is
wrong? he (s) then mentioned it (the above hadith).
Silsilah Al-Ahadith Al-Sahiyah, Volume 2 page 462 Hadith 821
Witness of Ibn Abbas about mourning of Prophet for Hussain:

.
Translation: Abdullah bin Abbas narrates that he saw holy prophet (saw) while sleeping in afternoon,
his hair were scattered, and full of dust, and he had a bottle filled with blood; I asked him: My parents
be sacrificed for you, what is this? He replied: this is the blood of Hussain and his companions, I have
been collecting it since day time. Narrator said that when we calculated, it was the day Hussain
embraced martyrdom.
AUTHENTICATION OF THE NARRATION:
- Sheikh Ahmad Shakir says:- chain is Sahih [musnad ahmad, researched by sheikh Ahmad Shakir, vol
4, page 26, narration 2165]
- Imam Hakim says:- Sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, though he did not write. Imam Dhahabi

Ali Ibn Abi Talib mourning for Hussain

Masnad Imam Ahmad, 2/60:
Abdullah Bin Naji narrates from his father who said : that he went with Ali who was pure. When he
passed Ninawa on his way to Siffin Ali called: Be patient Aba Abdillah, be patient Aba Abdillah by ,the
Euphrates river ,then I said: and why did you say? he said : Allahs Prophet (saw) came to me some
day and his eyes were overflowed with tears, I said: O Prophet of Allah did someone make you angry
why are your eyes overflowing? He said: Jibraeel left me after he told me that Al Hussein asws will be
killed by the Euphrates river. He said: do you want to smell some of his soil? I said: yes. He took some
of the soil in his hand and gave it to and gave it to me then I could not hold back my tears and my eyes
overflowed.
Sheikh Ahmad Shakir says: Sanad Sahih

Bani Umayyah & Modern Day Nasibies [Ashura is day of Eid]

Bani Umayyah started the Bidahs of Ashura such as wearing kohl, taking a bath (ghusl), wearing henna, shaking
hands with one another, cooking grains (hubub), showing happiness and so on.
Thanks to Allah, Muslim Ummah realized this Fitna and Bidahs of Bani Umayyah and stopped celebrating Ashura
as a happy day.
Unfortunately, today these Nasibies are once again coming up with their Fitna.

Part 2: Shia Traditions about Fast of 'Ashura

Opponents quote 8 Shia Traditions about Fast of Ashura from this link. But once again this is a useless practice by them. Let us
begin with Allah's help. Insha-Allah.
1. None of the traditions above even deal with fast of Ashura due to "Passover" of Bani Israel (as has been mentioned in Sunni
Traditions and which they believe) except for only ONE Tradition (i.e. the tradition No. 5 in the link that posted above) which
talks about fasting due to the "Passover" of Bani Israel.
Traditions 1, 6 and 8 give absolutely no reason for the Fasting.
Tradition 2 and 3 say it was due to "Atonement" and has nothing to do with with "happiness of Passover of Bani Israel". Same is
the case with tradition 4 which is about fast of wild beasts.
2. While the 7th Tradition is about fast on Ashura due to the sorrow of Hussain and Imam Abu `Abdillah weeping for him. Here is
the tradition:

Muhammad b. al-Hasan in al-Misbah from `Abdullah b. Sinan said: I entered upon Abu `Abdillah on the day of `Ashura
[and I met him melancholic in color, sorrowful in appearance in the masdar] and his tears were dropping upon his eyes like
dripping pearls. So I said: What is your crying from? So he said: Are you in (a state of) heedlessness? Do you not know that alHusayn was afflicted in the like of this day? So I said: What is your saying in regards to its fast? So he said to me: Fast it
without tabyeet (?), and break it without tashmeet (rejoicing at an enemies misfortune?), and do not make it a complete day of
fasting, and your iftar is to be after the salat of `asr by an hour upon a drink of water, for verily in the like of that time from that day
did the battle appear from the family of the Messenger of Allah [ - to the rest of the hadith]

4. And lastly, the Scientific Fact about Fast of Ashura is undeniable. No Sunni or Shia tradition could deny it while it is like a
"Universal Truth" that Bani Israel never fasted for "Passover" and this day of passover never corresponded to 10th of Muharram
in whole Madani life of Prophet (saw), but it was months away to 10th of Muharram in the 1st or 2nd Hijra year.

The last nail in Nasibi Coffin

The 5th Tradition (which is the ONLY tradition which suits the opponents claim of passover of Bani Israel) is itself a weak
tradition:

And by his isnad from `Ali b. al-Hasan from Muhammad b. `Abdullah b. Zurara from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr from
Aban b. `Uthman al-Ahmar from Kathir an-Nawa from Abu Ja`far . He said: The ark adhere to al-Judi on the day of
`Ashura, so Nuh commanded whoever was with him from the jinn and man to fast on that day. Abu Ja`far said: Do
you know what this day is? This is the day in which Allah forgave Adam and Hawa. And this is the day in which the sea
was split for the Children of Israel and Fir`awn and whoever was with him drowned. And this is the day in which Musa
defeated Fir`awn. And this is the day in which Ibrahim was born. And this is the day in which Allah forgave the people
of Yunus. And this is the day in which `Isa b. Maryam was born. And this is the day in which the Qaim will rise.

Grading:
al-Majlisi said this hadeeth is Da`eef (Weak)
--> Milaadh al-Akhyaar, vol. 7, pg. 116
Reason for the weakening of this is one narrator Katheer al-Nawaa':
= Katheer al-Nawwaa', he is a Koofee and he is either an `Aami (Sunni) (per al-Bariqs Rijāl) or a Zaydi Batriyya (per
al-ss Rijl & al-Kashis Rijl)
Katheer has been heavily condemned. There is a SaHeeH hadeeth in al-Kashi's Rijaal, where Imaam al-Saadiq does a du'aa
and says he does "bara'a" from him in "this world and the next" (See: al-Kashi, al-Rijaal,pg. 242, hadeeth # 441).There is another
hadeeth where Imaam al-Baaqir says that Katheer al-Nawwaa' is "heavily astrayed" (See: al-Kashi's Rijaal, pg. 240, hadeeth #
439).
Since this adth can be seen in Sunni books, and Katheer al-Nawwaa is said to be either Sunni or Zaydi, him being either of
those two would probably be the reason why you see this type of narration coming from him.
Even Sunnies consider themselves this tradition (which is found in their books) about Adam & Hawa & Arch & Ibrahim & Younus
to be week.
And lastly, as stated above, no Sunni or Shia tradition could deny the Scientific Proof that Jews never fasted on "passover" and
this day never corresponded to 10th of Muharram during whole Madinian life of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

Eid day of Ashura: The Conspiracy of Bani Umayyah and their supporters
Najabah ibn Al Harith Al attar said I once asked Abu Jafar(as) about fasting on the day of ashura. He(the imam) said It is a
discarded fast after the coming of Shahr Ramadan and what is discarded and abandoned is Heresy, Najabah then asked Abu
Abdullah(as) after his father about it and he answered just like his father and then said it is a fast about which there is not
anything in the book or the established sunnah except the sunnah of the family of Ziyad for their murdering Al-Husayn Ibn Ali(as)

I heard Zurarah(RAA) asking Abu Abdullah(as) about the fast on the day of Ashura, Abu Abdullah(as) said whoever fasts on this
day his share for such fasts is like the share of ibn Marjana and the family of Ziyad, I then asked what was their share that day?
he said(as) it is the fire, I seek protection with Allah against it and against the deeds against the deeds that take one closer to the
fire.

Fatwas of Maraja Karam

Ayatollah Sistani:

1756. It is Makrooh to fast on 'Ashura (10th of Muharram). It is also Makrooh to fast on the day about which one is not sure
whether it is the day of 'Arafa or Eid-ul-Azha.

Ayatollah Khui:
1756. It is abominable to fast on Ashura (10th of Moharrum). It is also abominable to fast an the day about which it is not sure as
to whether it is the day of Arafaa or Eidul qurban.

Let us end this article with this tradition of Imam Abu Abddillah:

Muhammad b. al-Hasan in al-Misbah from `Abdullah b.
So he said to me: Fast it

did the battle appear from the family of the Messenger of Allah [ - to the rest of the hadith].
Allahuma Sallay Allah Muhammad wa Aale Muhammad.

Conclusion:
1. Bani Umayyah were successful in bringing fabricated Traditions in Sunni Ahadith books, even their most Sahih books like of
Bukhari & Muslim.
2. And in Shia hatred, their opponents followed these fabricated traditions with blind eyes.
3. In name of these fabricated traditions, they started denying/neglecting the Sunnah of Prophet (saw) i.e. his sorrow and his
mourning the calamities of Hussain.
4. In name of these Umayyad's fabricated traditions, they deny the sorrow of Ashura and want to replace it with Joy and
Happiness and declare it Eid.

5. Even if there was any fast of Atonemnet, still it is not contrary to showing sorrow of Hussain on 'Ashura (especially after it has

Page 8

Wilayat.Net

been established that it was Sunnah of Prophet too). But Nasibies try to declare this sorrow Haram in name of this fabricated
traditions by Umayyads and declare it a day of Joy and Happiness.

At the end, one more quote from Ibn Kathir's history book, where he is telling that People of Syria (Nasibies of Bani Umayyah,
the Shian-e-Muawiyyah) used to celebrate on 'Ashura.
