A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam is an Indian
scientist and administrator who served as the 11th
President of India from 2002 to 2007. Kalam was born
and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, studied
physics at the St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli,
and aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of
Technology, Chennai.
Before his term as President, he worked as an
Aerospace engineer with Defence Research and
Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space
Research Organization (ISRO). Kalam is popularly
known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the
development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle
technology. He played a pivotal organizational,
technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II
nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original
nuclear test by India in 1974. Some scientific experts
have however called Kalam a man with no authority
over nuclear physics but who just carried on the
works of Homi J. Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai.
Kalam was elected the President of India in 2002,
defeating Lakshmi Sahgal, was nominated by
Bharatiya Janata Party and supported by opposition
Indian National Congress, the major political parties
of India. He is currently a visiting professor at Indian
Institute of Management Shillong, Indian Institute of
Management Ahmedabad and Indian Institute of
Management Indore, honorary fellow of Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, Chancellor of the
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology
Thiruvananthapuram, a professor of Aerospace
Engineering at Anna University (Chennai), JSS
University (Mysore) and an adjunct/visiting faculty at
many other academic and research institutions across
India.
Kalam advocated plans to develop India into a
developed nation by 2020 in his book India 2020. He
has received several prestigious awards, including the
Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. Kalam is
known for his motivational speeches and interaction
with the student community in India. He launched his
mission for the youth of the nation in 2011 called the
What Can I Give Movement with a central theme to
defeat corruption in India.

Early life and education

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in
a Tamil Muslim family to Jainulabudeen, a boat owner
and Ashiamma, a housewife, at Rameswaram, located
in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He came from a
poor background and started working at an early age
to supplement his family's income. After completing
school, Kalam distributed newspapers to financially
contribute to his father's income. In his school years,
he had average grades, but was described as a bright
and hardworking student who had a strong desire to
learn and spend hours on his studies, especially
mathematics. After completing his school education

at the Ramanathapuram Schwartz Matriculation

School, Kalam went on to attend Saint Joseph's
College, Tiruchirappalli, then affiliated with the
University of Madras, from where he graduated in
physics in 1954. Towards the end of the course, he
was not enthusiastic about the subject and would
later regret the four years he studied it. He then
moved to Madras in 1955 to study aerospace
engineering. While Kalam was working on a senior
class project, the Dean was dissatisfied with the lack
of progress and threatened revoking his scholarship
unless the project was finished within the next three
days. He worked tirelessly on his project and met the
deadline, impressing the Dean who later said, "I
[Dean] was putting you [Kalam] under stress and
asking you to meet a difficult deadline". He narrowly
missed achieving his dream of becoming a fighter
pilot, as he placed ninth in qualifiers, and only eight
positions were available in the IAF.

Career as scientist
This was my first stage, in which I learnt leadership
from three great teachersDr. Vikram Sarabhai , Prof.
Satish Dhawan and Dr. Brahm Prakash. This was the
time of learning and acquisition of knowledge for me.
After graduating from Madras Institute of Technology
(MIT Chennai) in 1960, Kalam joined Aeronautical
Development Establishment of Defense Research and
Development Organization (DRDO) as a scientist.
Kalam started his career by designing a small
helicopter for the Indian Army, but remained
unconvinced with the choice of his job at DRDO.
Kalam was also part of the INCOSPAR committee
working under Vikram Sarabhai, the renowned space
scientist. In 1969, Kalam was transferred to the Indian
Space Research Organization (ISRO) where he was the
project director of India's first indigenous Satellite
Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully deployed
the Rohini satellite in near earth's orbit in July 1980.
Joining ISRO was one of Kalam's biggest achievements
in life and he is said to have found himself when he
started to work on the SLV project. Kalam first
started work on an expandable rocket project
independently at DRDO in 1965.

Lemons are packed with anti-bacterial properties and

are
therefore
excellent
for indigestion and
constipation. They destroy the bad bacteria and let the
good bacteria flourish in turn giving you relief from
indigestion or constipation.
Lemon juice is good for you. If you want to lose weight,
make sure lemon is a part of your daily diet. You can
stop yourself from overeating by drinking a cup of tea
with half a lemon squeezed into it. This can stop you
from overeating. The soluble fibre called pectin found
in lemon makes you feel full quickly. Make a drink with
the juice of one lemon, two teaspoons honey and one
glass of warm water. Drink it before breakfast. Again
the feeling of fullness will stop you from eating too
much.
Did you know that you can alleviate your tooth ache
with fresh lemon juice? Apply freshly squeezed lemon
juice on the aching tooth and youll soon feel much
better. Also, lemon juice can keep gum disease at bay
and stop bleeding gums. Lemons are packed with
vitamin C and are excellent for your skin. Slice half a
lemon and use it like a scrub on your face. It removes
dirt, exfoliates, rejuvenates your skin and keeps your
skin looking young and glowing.
The flavonoids or the vitamin P in lemons strengthen
your blood vessels, pectins lower your cholesterol
levels in the blood and potassium helps prevents high
blood pressure In other words, if you want a healthy
heart lemons are a must in your daily diet.

2. How can you make 5+5+55 = 600 at a stroke?

9.

Packed with vitamin C, flavonoid, potassium and

calcium, lemons are used world over! So, todays
natural wonders is all about this little yellow fruit that
is loved by everyone!
Lemons give you relief from sore throat, help your skin
glow and add great flavor to your foods.
Health benefits of lemon
You may have heard your grandmother tell you to start
your day with a glass of lemon and lukewarm water.
This is because lemons contain alkaline-forming
nutrients which are excellent for your body and helps
alleviate several illnesses. The lemon water removes
toxins and restores your bodys pH balance.

India is a country of 127 crore people and who knows how

much that figure is likely to increase in the coming years.
With the increase in population, there is an obvious increase
in the consumption of resources. And major pressure is
increased on the consumption of energy, be it fuel or
electricity.
The population of New Delhi in 2011 was around 1.1 crores
and the number of vehicles in 2008 was about 11 lakhs. That
is a very huge number considering the car per person ratio.
The amount of pollution those cars create is unthinkable.
People might be saying that the increase in inflation is
seeing no end but the purchasing power of the mass is also
increasing. Speaking of purchasing power, Denmark has 180%
tax on car registration and it might be hard to believe but
the people are happy with this taxation policy. This means
less number of cars and the government pushing for the use
of public transport and BICYCLES. Yes, BICYCLES.
Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland and Norway) has the highest
number of cyclists in the world and it is really great that the
government is pushing for a sustainable development to save
the planet.
Many will be saying its not possible to ride a bicycle in a
country like India and I couldnt agree more but there have
been developments in a particular form of energy and were
all familiar with it - Renewable Energy. It is being used in
motor vehicles for over 5 years now. There are many
manufacturers out in the market like Honda, Now Mahindra
acquired Reva, just to name a few. But there is one
manufacturer that is making waves all over the world - That
is TESLA MOTORS. Founded by Elon Musk, this American
company under the leadership of its maverick leader has
made commendable efforts to save the environment. Just a
few weeks back they reported that the Tesla users have
saved 7 crore litres of fuel in the last 12 months. A recent
study from BP analysts also showed that the global oil and
gas reserve will only last for another 53 years which means a
shift of paradigm is required urgently before its too late to
save the planet, specially in India where there are large
number of people and motor vehicles.

But not all is bleak and gloomy in India regarding the green
movement. There have been efforts made in the
Infrastructure field to save energy. Like the recently
inaugurated Indira Paryavaran Bhawan in New Delhi is a ZNE
(Zero Net Energy) building. It is one of few such buildings
around India and many more must be built. Until the
government doesnt start promoting this on a large scale we
should from our end start saving energy by not unnecessarily
wasting it. And we all are guilty in that area. Charity begins
at home and heres to hoping for a sustainable and green
planet.

"I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them." - Ian L. Fleming

He asked me. 'Did you know, my child, that all this

time you have been struggling, you have actually
been growing roots'.
'I would not quit on the bamboo.
I will never quit on you.'
'Don't compare yourself to others.'
He said.
'The bamboo had a different Purpose than the
fern.
Yet they both make the forest beautiful.'
'Your time will come', God said to me.
'You will rise high'

A Thought - Dont Give Up!

One day I decided to quit...
I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality... I
wanted to quit my life.
I went to the woods to have one last talk with
God.
'God', I asked, 'Can you give me one good reason
not to quit?'
His answer surprised me...
'Look around', He said. 'Do you see the fern and
the bamboo?' 'Yes', I replied.
'When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I
took very good care of them.
I gave them light. I gave them water.
The fern quickly grew from the earth.
Its brilliant green covered the floor.

Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I

did not quit on the bamboo.
In the second year the Fern grew more
vibrant and plentiful.
And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed.
But I did not quit on the bamboo. He said.
'In year three there was still nothing from the
bamboo seed.
But I would not quit.
In year four, again, there was nothing from the
bamboo seed. I would not quit.' He said.
'Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged
from the earth.

'How high should I rise?' I asked.

'How high will the bamboo rise?' He asked in
return.
'As high as it can?' I questioned.
'Yes.' He said, 'Give me glory by rising as high as
you can.'
I left the forest and brought back this story.
I hope these words can help you see that God will
never give up on you.
Never, Never, Never Give up.
For the Prayer is not an option but an
opportunity.
Don't tell the Lord how big the problem is,
tell the problem how Great the Lord is!
Heavens door open this morning, God asked me...
'My CHILD, what can I do for you?'
And I said, 'Father, please protect and bless the
one reading this message from You.'
God smiled and answered, 'Request granted.'

You never know when GOD is going to bless

you!! Good things happen when you least
expect them to !!!

Compared
to the fern it was seemingly small and
insignificant...But just 6
months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet
tall.
It had spent the five years growing roots. Those
roots made it strong and gave it what it needed
to survive.
I would not give any of my creations a challenge
it could not handle.

Place 400 bricks in a closed room.

Put your new employees in the room and close the door.
Leave them alone and come back after 6 hours.
Analyze the situation you find:
If they are counting the bricks, put them in the Accounting Department.
If they are recounting them, put them in Auditing.
If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in Engineering.
if they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning.
If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations.
if they are sleeping, put them in Security.
If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in Information Technology.
If they are sitting idle, put them in Human Resources.
If they say they have tried different combinations, they are looking for more, yet not a brick has been
moved, put them in Sales.
j. If they have already left for the day, put them in Marketing.
k. if they are staring out of the window, put them in Strategic Planning.
l. if they are talking to each other, and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them
