Shortcomings of prevalent solutions

Common contemporary services provide best-effort anti-DDoS
services via hosted platforms, with limited number of scrubbing
nodes that are mostly concentrated at regional hubs, and rely
on the Internet to deliver all attack traffic at its door-step for
mitigation. If attack traffic finds its way to the hosted
Infrastructure, the processed traffic is then put back on the very
same Internet to reach the target. This is not an efficient
mechanism as it still saturates the customer Internet bandwidth.
The key differentiator in Tata Communications service is an
integrated, network-based defense strategy. With over 20% of
the worlds entire Internet traffic passing through the Tata
Communications IP network, our managed DDoS scrubbing
farms are tightly integrated into this network, providing us a
powerful platform to monitor and clean network traffic closer
to the source rather than the customer equipment.

DDoS attacks are global by nature, picking up momentum/
volume as they converge at the victims network. It is this
behavior that is arrested by our global facilities, by
redirecting the attack to our scrubbing farms that are
closest to the attack sources. Customers subscribing to our
service get access to all scrubbing farms. This translates to
minimal latency in case of an off-ramp required during
mitigation.
The One AS hop principle
As a Tier1 IP provider, Tata Communications carries 20% of
all internet traffic in the world. For DDoS, this helps us
follow the one AS* hop rule, which implies that irrespective
of the source location, our scrubbing farms are never more
than one AS hop away (for regions that are active on the
global botnet map). This ensures:
Zero dependency on any other network provider for
bandwidth. So there is no risk of service provider
bandwidth getting choked in the event of multiple
customers getting attacked simultaneously

Minimum Latency
Due to the availability of our dense & protected network,
there is minimal alteration in the path from source to
destination, when the customer traffic is off-ramped for
mitigation. This allows us to limit any latency impact to less
than 5%, ensuring customers maintain their network KPIs

Multi-vendor capability
Tata Communications scrubbing farms currently deploys
equipment from Arbor Networks, the leading provider for
anti-DDoS equipment. However, as an MSSP we are capable
of providing multi-vendor solutions based on the customer
interest and need. This approach allows us to retain
flexibility in design, avoid dependency on any one vendor
or technology, incorporate the best in field innovations as
and when they are developed and provide benefit of choice
to our customers.
Protected GRE tunnel
As a value added feature, Tata Communications also
provides the option of protecting the GRE tunnel for
customers by providing a non-public IP for GRE tunnel
termination point. This IP is not visible from the internet
thus protect the tunnel from any attacks on the network.
