Update recommendation
Recommended
IMPORTANT: Firmware versions 3.90, 5.80, 8.20, and 1080 have been recalled and are no longer
available. Certain backup applications and the LTO-5 and LTO-6 tape drives were incompatible using
this version. Any autoloader or library using with these firmware versions should upgrade to versions
4.00, 5.90, 8.30, 1090 or newer versions as soon as possible.
Supersedes
All previous versions of firmware.

Enhancements

The firmware now uses 2048-bit KMIP certificates, allowing the use of FIPS-compliant algorithms
when using the HP Enterprise Secure Key Manager (ESKM) 4.0 KMIP integration.

The autoloader and library RMI can now use 2048-bit browser certificates.

Added support for USB 3.0 flash devices for upgrading firmware and downloading support
tickets.

Added support for additional KMIP key attributes, which will appear in log files.

Enhanced library networking security by implementing network standard SSL updates.

Enhanced RMI security by only using strong SSL Ciphers.

Description

Fixes

Fixed a rare case where the OCP would go blank until the next library power cycle. (MSL4048,
MSL8048, MSL8096 only)

Fixed an RMI drive firmware upgrade timeout that could prevent the drive firmware update from
starting without notification.

Fixed a case where the library would become unresponsive when restoring an Encryption Kit
token backup file with a .tkn suffix created with MSL6480 firmware versions prior to 4.30.

Known issues and workarounds

Issue: When enabling KMIP, the system displays error HE: system error, memory at address zero
violated. Code: D7 E1.
Workaround: Reboot the library. KMIP will be enabled after the reboot.

Issue: The RMI does not allow connections although the autoloader or library can still respond to
standard ping commands, the OCP is functional, and the communication with the tape drives
operates normally. The only backup operations that might be affected are those configured for
KMIP configuration.
This is a rare condition, but if the autoloader or library gets into this state while it is configured
for KMIP encryption, backup operations can fail because KMIP keys cannot be retrieved.
The check condition related to this KMIP failure is:
Check Condition 0x02/0x7463(ASCQ=0x7463)

Workaround: Re-seat the Ethernet cable attached to the library controller. No autoloader or library
reboot is needed.

Compatibility notes
When changing firmware
Because each firmware revision contains new features, some configuration settings are not retained
when earlier firmware versions are loaded. HP recommends against downgrading firmware unless
instructed to do so by an HP Support engineer. Always verify configuration settings after installing
firmware.

MSL Encryption Kit token with odd-numbered PIN length

When using firmware version 2.50, 4.40, 6.70, 9.10, or newer revisions with the Encryption Kit, any
key server tokens set with an odd number of characters for the PIN will not be totally backwards
compatible in autoloaders or libraries with code revisions 2.10, 4.00, 6.30, or 8.70. In those cases,
a token in an autoloader or library with 2.10, 4.00, 6.30, or 8.70 firmware revisions will be able to
accept the PIN for the token and access keys on the token, but the user will not be able to change the
PIN on the token, save the keys to a file, or restore the keys from a file until the autoloader or library
firmware is upgraded. Users should always upgrade to the latest version of firmware to ensure complete
compatibility.

Determining current version

Supersedes history
IMPORTANT: When updating the MSL2024 to firmware version 2.00 or higher from firmware 1.70
or 1.80 without first updating to 1.91, you will get an Invalid Robotic Library firmware error (83
02). To resolve this issue, update the library firmware a second time to update the robotics firmware
to the proper level.
IMPORTANT: Several configuration settings are reset to defaults if the library is upgrading from
firmware versions 1.70 or 1.80:

Mailslot is set to disabled.

Drive 1 SCSI ID is set to 4.

Drive 2 SCSI ID is set of 5.

Master Drive (Library LUN hosted by) is set to Drive 1.

Drive 1 power is set to on.

Drive 2 power is set to on.

Library Mode is set to Automatic.

Autoload Mode is disabled.

Loop Mode is disabled.

All versions not listed are inactive.
