Parallels Between the Olivet Discourse and Passion

(1) The use of hand over (paradidomi)


They will deliver you up (paradidomi) to tribulation and put you to death . . . and many will fall away and betray (paradidomi) one another and hate one another.
Matt. 24:9-10
**This same verb is used 19 times to refer to the betrayal/delivering up of Jesus.
The Son of Man is going to be delivered (paradidomi) into the hands of men; and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day. Matthew 17:22
Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered (paradidomi) to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, and will hand Him over (paradidomi) to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and
on the third day He will be raised up. Matthew 20:18-19
Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, What are you willing to give me to betray (paradidomi) Him to you? Matthew 26:14-15

(2) Falling away (skandalidzo)
At that time many will fall away (skandalizdo) and will betray one another and hate one another. Matthew 24:10
You will all fall away (skandalidzo) because of me this night . . . Though they all fall away (skandalizdo) because of you, I will never fall away (skandalidzo).
(3) Sleeping during the Hour (hora)
Therefore, stay awake (gregorao), for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. Matthew 24:42
But concerning that day and hour (hora) no none knows . . . Therefore, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour (hora) you do not expect. Matthew 24:36, 44
Watch (lit. stay awake, gregorao) therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour (hora). Matthew 25:13
**He also tells two parables about sleeping during the hour of his comingthe parable of the thief in the night (24:43-44) and the parable of the ten virgins (25:1-13).
Then He said to them, . . . Remain here and watch (lit. stay awake, gregorao) with me . . . And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, So you could not watch (lit. stay awake, gregorao) with me for one hour (hora)? Watch
(lit. stay awake, gregorao) and pray that you may not enter into tribulation. Matthew 26:38, 40-41
Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour (hora) is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Matthew 26:45
(4) Coming of the Son of Man
After the tribulation of those days . . . they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory (24:29-30)
But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven (26:64)
(5) Earthquake
For nation will rise against, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. Matt. 24:7
And the earth shook , and the rocks were split open (27:51)
(6) Darkness
. . .the sun will be darkened (24:29)
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 27:45

(1) Fleeing without clothes
Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains . . . and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his mantle. Mark 13:14-16

(2) Prayer during Tribulation


Be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things. Luke 21:36
Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial. Luke 22:46
