Observations (Part 1):

-Zinc metal was in small long flexible, solid, silver and shiny stripes.
-HCl was clear liquid with a strong odor
-Movement of acid in water in eudiometer was cyclic-like (up and down)
-Reaction started slow, but soon picked up and resulted in large and quick bubbling of
the metal (quick and large release of hydrogen gas)
-At the end of the reaction, all of the metal was dissolved, none stuck on sides nor
accumulated at top

Observations (Part 2):

-Alloy 6188 was coiled-band like, silver, shiny, solid and had jagged sides
-HCl was clear liquid with a strong odor
-Movement of acid in water in eudiometer was cyclic-like (up and down)
-Reaction was slow starting and a long reaction
-Once the reaction started, it produced a lot of small bubbles (hydrogen gas) making the
inside of the eudiometer seem cloudy
-As the reaction neared its end, the production gradually reduced
-There was black substance accumulated at top which would not react, even when the
rest of the alloy finished reacting.

Discussion: (within space provided)

In the first part of the experiment, determining the amount of hydrogen
gas produced, we found that with 0.045g of Zinc metal and 20mL of
hydrochloric acid, 8.28x10-4mols of Hydrogen gas was produced (percentage
yield of 120.34%). With 0.058g of Zinc metal and 20mL of Hydrochloric
(acid, 8.96x10-4mol of Hydrogen gas was produced (percent yield of 101.01%).
The average percent yield of the two trials was 110.68%. The amount of
Hydrogen gas produced exceeded the expected amount of Hydrogen gas
produced. This would mean that our Zinc metal was more than 100% pure
(around 110% pure), which is impossible.
In the second part of the experiment, determining the composition of Alloy
6118, we found that its average composition percentage was 81.06% Zinc
metal and 18.80% Aluminium. This seems to be reasonable considering that in
Trial 1, it was determined that there was a 21.24% aluminum composition vs
that of Trial 2, where it was determined that there was an aluminum
composition of 16.36%. In Trail 1, 9.78x10-4mol of Hydrogen gas was
produced while in Trial 2, 8.54x10-4mol was produced. According to equation
[4] and [5], the more aluminum, the more Hydrogen gas produced.
The high percentage yield can be attributed to both experimental and human
errors during the experiment. Things like inaccurate calibration of the
eudiometer, wide table ranges for the water vapour pressure and volume of
Hydrochloric acid can alter the quantity of Hydrogen gas produced (ie:
Temperature in Table 1 increases by 1, therefore the temperature was
rounded to a whole number to match its corresponding pressure. This
rounding could alter the pressure of Hydrogen gas, resulting in the increase
of Hydrogen gas (if rounded up) in the calculations.

Conclusion: (no more than two lines)

]
=
We found the average amount of Hydrogen gas created between trials
involving Zinc metal to be 8.62x10-4mols and the average composition of Alloy
6188 to be 81.06% Zinc metal and 18.80% Aluminium.
