Faculty Frequently Asked Questions

1) Details of the position requirements


Executive Dean
Qualifications: MD, DO, (MBBS, MD) and/or PhD from an accredited institution
of higher education and/or a medical school listed in the WHO directory. A
scientist (DSc, PhD) must have at least 5-10 publications in reputable journals.
Experience: A minimum of ten years of experience in administering medical
education in USA/Canada (5 years from SJSM) and a working knowledge of the
USMLE format of courses and test materials is required. The Executive Dean
must also have a proven aptitude for overseeing the functions of academic
committees and evaluating reports on the day to day functions of the institution.
Dean of Clinical Affairs
Qualifications: MD, DO, (MBBS, MD) and/or PhD from an accredited institution
of higher education and/or a medical school listed in the WHO directory. A
scientist (DSc, PhD) must have at least 5-10 publications in reputable journals.
Experience: A minimum eight years of experience in administering medical
education in USA/Canada (5 years from SJSM) and a working knowledge of the
USMLE format of courses and test materials. The Dean of Clinical Affairs must
also have a proven aptitude for overseeing the functions of academic
committees and evaluating reports on day to day functions of the institution.
Professor and Dean (Basic Sciences, Administrative, Student)
Qualifications: MD, DO, (MBBS, MD) and/or PhD from an accredited institution
of higher education and/or a medical school listed in the WHO directory. A
scientist (DSc, PhD) must have at least 5-10 publications in reputable journals.
Experience: A minimum eight years of classroom teaching experience (4 years
from SJSM) complete with experience in using PowerPoint presentations and a
working knowledge of the USMLE format of courses, test materials, and clinical
integration of basic sciences. The Professor and Dean must also have a proven
aptitude for overseeing the functions of academic committees; evaluating
reports on day to day functions of the institution and experience in active
participation in academic committees, structuring curriculum, and grading.

Associate Professor
Qualifications: MD, DO, (MBBS, MD) and/or PhD from an accredited institution
of higher
education and /or a medical school listed in the WHO directory.
Experience: A minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience (2 years
from SJSM) complete with experience in using PowerPoint presentations and a
working knowledge of the USMLE format of courses, test materials, and clinical
integration of the basic sciences. An Associate Professor must have a proven
aptitude for overseeing functions of academic committees and evaluating
reports on the day to day functions of the institution.
Assistant Professor
Qualifications: MD, DO, (MBBS, MD) and/or PhD from an accredited institution
of higher education and/or a medical school listed in the WHO directory.
Experience: A minimum of two years of classroom teaching experience (one year
from SJSM) complete with experience in using PowerPoint presentations and a
working knowledge of the USMLE format of courses, test materials, and clinical
integration of basic science courses.
Tutor
Qualifications: MD, DO, (MBBS, MD) and/or PhD from an accredited institution
of higher education and/or a medical school listed in the WHO directory.
Experience: Six to twelve months of classroom experience complete with
experience in using PowerPoint presentations and a working knowledge of the
USMLE format of courses, test materials, and clinical integration of basic science
courses.
2) Recruitment Process
a. Upon the receipt of your CV, Saint James School of Medicine Faculty Recruitment
Panel will review it and determine whether your experience matches any open
positions.
b. In the event that your experience and an open position is a match, you will be
interviewed by the Director of Planning to discuss your experience further and
the open position. Director of Planning will present the interview details to the
Panel. In the event that the Panel decides to offer you a position, the Director of
Planning will send you a contract for your review and signature. You will also
receive a list of immigration documents that must be submitted to us, and any
other requirements.

c. Once the contract and the immigration documents are received by the school, it
usually takes 6-8 weeks before the work permit is issued. Once this is completed,
the faculty member can join.
All interviews are conducted via phone and sometimes via video conference. In
the event that the faculty member resides in United States, an in person
interview in the Park Ridge, IL office may be required.

Each faculty members is entitled 4-5 weeks of leave annually, which is to be


taken during the semester breaks. There are three semester breaks each year,
with the New Year break being the longest (about 3 weeks).
Weather
Weather in Bonaire and Anguilla is a typical Caribbean tropical weather.
Temperatures are generally between 80F-90F with seasonally high humidity.
Insurance
Bonaire has a public health system that is available for a little or no cost to
everyone. They have a hospital and basic medical facilities available on the
island. In the event of a major issue, surrounding islands like Curacao and Aruba
have more sophisticated medical facilities available. These are usually available
at some costs, depending on the issue.
Anguilla professors can participate in a health insurance program subsidized by
the school. By participating in the program, the employee has options of
coverage with $500 deductible on Anguilla or anywhere else in the world except
United States.
Both islands have pharmacies thru which you can gain access to common drugs.
Accommodation
The initial accommodation (first two days) is usually in a hotel to which you are
later reimbursed by the school. The permanent accommodation would be
arranged by the housing coordinator on each island. Once you have your work
permit and you schedule your trip to the island, you will be given hosing
coordinators information to make housing arrangements.
Salary and taxes
Salary depends on the position offered and will be discussed during the
recruitment process. The salary is usually quoted as a gross amount and there
are some taxes deducted locally. In general, part of the salary is paid out locally
and the other part is send to any account you may have anywhere else in the
world. Usually, the send part is not taxed as many countries do not tax the
earnings earned abroad.

8) Starting Dates
Starting dates are flexible, but ideally we would prefer that the professor joins at
the start of the semester, which is generally the first week of either January, May
or September.
9) Perks
In addition to salary, faculty will be reimbursed for housing, travel and moving
expenses, first two days of initial stay in a hotel and car rental. Saint James also
reimburses faculty for the initial immigration fee. In addition, there are bonuses
for a multi-year contract available for most positions.
10) Cost of living
Both islands have a similar cost of living structure. On average, a married couple
should be able to live on about US$1,500/month. This amount will vary on a
person lifestyle.
11) Career Growth
Saint James offers a clear career path for faculty. This starts with the positions
as low as tutor and processing to the positions of the Dean or even the Executive
Dean. Saint James requires that all faculty participate in research and promotes
faculty participation in continuing education.
12) Child Education
For faculty members with children it is important that the children have the
ability to continue their education. Bonaire currently only offers education in
Dutch. Anguilla is an English speaking island and has a primary and secondary
schools available. There are private and public schools available.
13) Reaching Bonaire/Anguilla
There are many ways to reach Bonaire/Anguilla from different parts of the
world.
From Europe there are direct daily flights to Bonaire from Amsterdam.
To reach Anguilla, it is recommended that everyone goes to Saint Martin first.
Saint Martin is a French/Dutch island to which there are direct daily flights from
either Paris or Amsterdam.
From United States there are several ways to reach both islands. Contacting a
travel agent would be a best solution for most affordable routes.
