An ESO Welcome

The European School of Osteopathy invites you to register for our 5th
International Conference, which will take place from 22nd to 25th June 2006 in
Maidstone, Kent.
Our last conference (June 2004) attracted more than 350 delegates from 31
different countries and received excellent feedback (this can be found on our
website www.eso.ac.uk). It focused on historical aspects and approaches in
Osteopathy. This year, the theme is The Dimensions of the Palpatory Space.
We carefully selected speakers and workshop leaders who have developed
fascinating approaches to palpation and the dimensions of palpation.

The fascia is an amazingly versatile and pervasive tissue. Its functions, which range from mechanical,
physiological, metabolic and immune to communicative, are increasingly becoming understood and
applied to osteopathic teaching and practice. This workshop will explore a range of energetic and
physiological conceptual models associated with interpretations based principally on tensegrity and
dynamic fascial continuity and the crystalline nature of the body viewed both from a microscopic to a
macroscopic level. These will be explored within a theoretical and clinical setting.

This workshop will examine some of the unique features of the anatomy and physiology of the neonate. In
the practical sessions we will explore how best to set up the Therapeutic Space in which the infant is
enabled to unfold and release whatever strains stand in the way of the fulfilment of its potential, present
and future.

This seminar will attempt to present the material in a pragmatic 'feet on the ground' and, as far as
possible, evidence-based manner. It is hoped this will enable the attendee to realise the massive potential
that is present when working with these concepts in both a direct and indirect manner.
Christian Fossum is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Vice Principal (Research) at the
European School of Osteopathy. He lectures widely internationally. He also works with
the AT Still Research Institute at the AT Still University of Health Sciences in Kirksville,
MO. His special area of interest is osteopathic manipulative techniques and conceptual
models in assessment and treatment.

Susan Turner has practiced Osteopathy in London since she graduated from the ESO in
1979. She has taught osteopathic medicine, paediatric osteopathy and osteopathy in the
cranial field at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the UK and overseas. In 1989
she co-founded the ESO undergraduate childrens clinic, and directed it from 1991-2000.
She also helped found the Osteopathic Centre for Children in London where she worked
from 1991 - 1995.
Her particular areas of interest are the mind-body interface, and the fields of paediatric
and obstetric osteopathy.

Jon Parsons is a Senior Lecturer and Tutor at the European School of Osteopathy; he also
lectures widely internationally. His special area of interest is in the osteopathic conceptual and philosophical fields. Recently, he published an undergraduate textbook:
Osteopathy, Models for Diagnosis, Treatment and Practice.

Many pain generators and palpatory clues warrant consideration in the proper differential diagnosis and
clinical treatment of chronic low back pain. This workshop will discuss osteopathic examination and
techniques for identifying often overlooked and significant causes of low back pain. It will also provide a
hands-on tutorial for learning a quick and simple approach to identifying (and treating) six of the most
commonly overlooked causes of chronic low back pain.

During this workshop, Philippe Druelle DO will introduce the participants to osteopathic work on brain
dynamics. Many patients suffer from chronic conditions which develop from one generation to another as
a result of physical and/or emotional shock and which entail changes in brain vascularisation and fluid
motion. Philippe Druelle has been developing since 1983 several diagnostic methods and treatment
techniques to release endocranial tissues from such restrictions and also a special third ventricle technique
which will be shown during this workshop. During the day, Philippe Druelle will present research carried out
this year with cranial transdoppler demonstrating the effectiveness of this work on brain dynamics.

Differential diagnoses for chronic low back pain in this workshop will include specific somatic dysfunctions
of the lumbar and pelvic joints, key myofascial structures associated with postural stability, myofascial
trigger points associated with overuse syndromes, and a sampling of viscerosomatic reflexes. While the
emphasis of the hands-on workshop will be on practical clinical applications which were derived from
clinical experience, the lecture component will integrate the current evidence-base as well as postulated
models related to perpetuating and precipitating factors of low back pain and its treatment with manual
and/or neuromusculoskeletal techniques.
Professor Michael L. Kuchera DO, was recruited to the Philadelphia College of
Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in 2002 after over two decades of teaching, research, and
clinical service. In 1980 Dr. Kuchera graduated from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic
Medicine (KCOM) where he later served as Chairperson of OMM, OMM Residency
Director, Vice President for International Osteopathic Research & Education, and Vice
President for Academic Affairs and Dean.
Currently Dr Kuchera directs the OMM Research and Human Performance &
Biomechanics Laboratory, mentoring PCOM's biomedical sciences masters' students
and osteopathic physicians-in-training. He has also just been named the Clinical Director of PCOM's Center
for Chronic Disorders of Aging. Dr Kuchera has earned an international reputation. A past president of the
American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO), Dr Kuchera represents the United States in the International
Federation of Manual/Musculoskeletal Medicine (FIMM), where he is currently vice-president. In addition to
co-editing and writing numerous articles and chapters in the Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine text, Dr
Kuchera co-authored Osteopathic Considerations in Systemic Dysfunction with his father as well as two
other textbooks. As a researcher, Dr Kuchera readily admits that his most exciting research at the moment
lies in documenting the pressures needed for various forms of osteopathic palpation and OMT. Such a
project allows him to simultaneously influence the future of research, teaching and patient care his three
professional passions!

Philippe Druelle DO is the founder of the Collge d'Etudes Ostopathiques (Montreal) and
the Canadian College of Osteopathy (Toronto). He is renowned internationally for his clinical methodology, which includes the treatment of the endocranial field (including the
encephalon, the dynamics of the membranes, systemic activity of the brain, the
dynamics of the lateral and 3rd ventricles and the circulation of fluids and energies) and
the central chain. For the past 25 years, Philippe Druelle has been a much appreciated
teacher of traditional osteopathy throughout the world and a firm devotee to the
osteopathic profession.

This workshop will be centred around the application of Webster's theory on vertebral
body-disc lesions to the pseudo-rotatory C0-C1-C2 lesion.

The aim of the workshop is to give the participant a practical experience of the perception of tissue fields
and levels of function within the palpatory space, with an exploration of how the perception may become a
therapeutic tool.

therapeutic tool. The concepts will be explained to enable the participant to understand how to identify the
field and level being manifested.

the field and level being manifested. There will be guided palpatory exercises to help the participant to
access these phenomena and to turn perception into a therapeutic intent.
The day will afford ample time for exploration and application of treatment to ensure that the concepts are
well understood.
The principles of Specific Adjusting Technique (SAT) will also be explained and a demonstration given as to
how to apply SAT in the context of fields and levels.
Gez Lamb graduated from the ESO in 1982 and went into practice with Tom Dummer for
three years until Tom's retirement. During this time he refined his skills as a Specific
Adjustment Technique (SAT) practitioner, which he practises and teaches to this day. As
a SAT expert, he has taught the technique and approach abroad in Sweden, Canada,
Germany, Austria, Russia and Spain.
Through an early association with Harold Klug, Gez was inspired to integrate craniosacral
technique with SAT and to explore the concept of tissue field and level of function as
manifested in the body during treatment. Through years of experimentation and
observation he has developed an approach to the use of these dimensions of palpatory
space to enhance treatment outcomes.

There will be guided palpatory exercises to help the participant to access these phenomena with a
consideration of how to turn perception into a therapeutic intent. The exercises will be tailored to the time
constraints but every participant will experience the phenomena and the application to treatment. The
principles of Specific Adjusting Technique (SAT) will also be demonstrated within the context of fields and
levels.

The Dimensions of the Palpatory Space

The palpatory space is created by the encounter between the practitioner and the patient. Whilst for the
beginner osteopath it may be limited to one single plane corresponding to the interface or contact
between two skins, with experience the practitioner's attention and awareness will restore its full anatomical volume. In time, what was originally no more than epidermal contact becomes an open door to other
dimensions: physical, energetic, emotional and mental. At this point, an intimate dialogue can be established that may be the basis for a deeper harmonisation.
At the end of the day, the participants will have experienced the palpatory space as a territory for the
exchange of information regarding both what is visible and what is invisible - an open door between two
individuals in all the dimensions they encompass. As a result, the touching subject becomes the touched
one and vice-versa.

Bruno Geoffray is an osteopath with over twenty years' experience who read and received
his university degree in osteopathy from the Bobigny Medical School and now lives and
works in Bordeaux. He took the courses run by A Ratio at the Conservatoire
Ostopathique Franais (COF), attended J-P Barral's visceral workshops and was in
charge of the initial stages in the creation of a two-year course conducted by Pierre
Hamond.
In the last eight years, he has taken part as a lecturer at Osto-Formations, a project of
continuing medical education in functional osteopathy, and has worked at promoting the
latter amongst manual medicine practitioners. As a member of Ostos de France, he is working towards
the introduction of legislation guaranteeing the highest standards for the practice of osteopathy in France.
Alain Cassourra achieved his degree in Medicine and graduated in Osteopathy from
Bobigny (University of Paris XIII) in 1989. Alain received the basis for his osteopathic
practice from workshops with Jos Puren, a DO from the ESO in Maidstone. As a lecturer in Bobigny, he took part in the creation of Ostoformation, a course in Functional
Osteopathy. He learned a great deal from meeting Alain Roques (a student of Jacques
Andreva-Duval) and Pierre Tricot. At the moment, Alain is working with Bruno Repetto on
the emotional and energetic dimensions involved in the practitioner-patient relationship.

Bonnie Gintis DO lives and practices Osteopathy in northern California with her husband Steve Paulus DO.
She has been in private practice since 1987. She has taught Osteopathic Principles & Practice at the New
York College of Osteopathic Medicine, with the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation, with the American
Academy of Osteopathy, with Jim Jealous DO, and has been a faculty member and Course Director for The
Cranial Academy. She is also an authorized Continuum Movement teacher, and has taught in collaboration
with Emilie Conrad, the originator of Continuum since 1997. Her innovative approach, combining
Osteopathy, Continuum Movement, and other approaches to breath and movement education and
awareness, expands the possibilities of experiencing Osteopathic concepts in oneself and developing the
perceptual skills to more deeply care for ourselves and our patients.

Professor Frank Willard from the University of New England, Department of Anatomy, is
a featured speaker at most conferences held by the American Academy of Osteopathy,
the Cranial Academy, the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation and the European
School of Osteopathy. He has written many papers that apply to osteopaths and is the
only neuro-anatomist who looks at his work from an osteopathic point of view.

This workshop will explore the commonality shared by the fields of Continuum Movement and Osteopathy.
The goals of this workshop are:

The Osteopathic Mechanical Link is deliberately oriented towards a global approach, the concepts of "total
human being" and "total lesion" in their entirety. Our clinical examination routine is composed of eight functional unities. This is entirely in line with the idea of Osteopathy as an authentic form of holistic functional
medicine.

To define and experience the approach to movement education & awareness called "Continuum
Movement".
To provide an experience in your own body, a felt sense of many concepts that are usually only
experienced while treating another person.
To utilize movement, breathing and meditation explorations to experience and enhance the
information presented in lecture, discussions & slide presentations.
To inquire into the possibilities available in this approach to self-care & self-treatment.
To develop and deepen your experience of the dimensions of osteopathic perceptual skills, and
diagnostic and treatment skills.
To redefine and enliven your sense of embodiment.

The fact that this globalistic notion is evoked does not exclude, quite on the contrary, the adoption of a very
specific examination and treatment routine. This is how this workshop's participants will be introduced to
the neuro-vascular functional unity and more specifically the autonomic nervous system, the vagus system
and cranial nerve X.
During the workshop coordinated by Paul Chauffour, it will be demonstrated and the participants will be
able to verify for themselves, the structural diagnosis of the osteopathic lesion of the Vagus Nerve and also
releasing methods along the lines of specific structural adjusting technique, which will be demonstrated
with the recoil technique.
The key or the password to the Vagus nerve will open the way for the participants of this workshop to a very
precise study of the different thoracic and abdominal plexi. In osteopathic practice the Vagus is an essential element, one which takes part in influencing homoestasis in a powerful and lasting way.

Our skeleton is subjected to many constraints that affect not only the articular system but also the osseous
system. As a result, osteopathic lesions follow very precise patterns which are the intra-osseous lines of
force.

Neurophysiological markers of the somato-emotional influence on biomechanical, biokinetical and biodynamical aspects, on osteoarticular, visceral and cranio-fascial levels.

Once a line of force is established the bone loses its natural flexibility and resilience and this is the origin
of all sorts of metabolic and biomechanical dysfunctions. By applying the 'Mechanical Link' method we will
see, during the course of this workshop, how these lines of force can be diagnosed and treated in a quick
and effective way.

Bernard Darraillans DO graduated from the Lausanne School of Osteopathy, from ATMAN
in France and has also done studies and research in Humanistic Psychology and
Morphopsychology. He teaches at the Montpellier School of Osteopathy, at the Collge
d'Etudes Ostopathiques in Montreal and Toronto, at the Deutsches Osteopathie Kolleg
in Germany and used to teach at the Dentistry School of Toulouse University. He will be
presenting a paper at the symposium organised by the Russian School of Osteopathic
Medicine. He is well known in Europe and Canada for his extensive knowledge of fascia,
somato-emotional treatment and the treatment of babies and toddlers. He has written
about the osteopathic concept of occlusion and is a dedicated and very popular practitioner amongst patients, students and colleagues.

Points discussed:
Mapping of intra-osseous lines of force.
Diagnosis of lesions using compression tests.
Diagnosis of the dominant lesion using inhibitory balance tests.
Treatment with recoil techniques.
The practical aspects of this session will essentially be centred on the cranium and lower extremity. This is
an important workshop, as intra-osseous lesions often turn out to be primary lesions and their treatment is
therefore essential.

Malocclusion, Orthodontics and Osteopathy

Eric Prat: Shortly after obtaining his degree in 1987, Eric Prat DO met Paul Chauffour an encounter that would shape his work as an osteopath. Since 1990, he has contributed
in a major way to the development of the 'Mechanical Link in Osteopathy', a subject
which he teaches both in France and in many other countries. With Paul Chauffour, he
wrote Le Lien Mcanique en Ostopathie (Editions Sully, 2003) and its American version
Mechanical Link (North Atlantic Books, 2002).

Dr Karen Steele studied with Richard Still DO, great grandson of AT Still, while a resident and during her
first few years of speciality osteopathic manipulative practice in Kirksville, Missouri. This seminar presents
Dr Steele's interpretation of Dr Still's instruction, honed by twenty years of use in patients of all ages. Most
techniques are with the patient seated, and rely on subtle palpation of the facet joint capsule for diagnosis
of somatic dysfunction, proper patient positioning, and determination of optimal joint plane in which to activate. Techniques will be taught for diagnosis and articulatory treatment of the sacro-iliac joint; cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines; and first rib.

The hand is the second most expressive body part, after the face. In this workshop, the functional anatomy
of the elbow, wrist and hand will be explored. Clinical syndromes associated with somatic dysfunction of
these regions will be discussed, and osteopathic treatment of the elbow, wrist and hand will be reviewed
and practised.

Karen M Steele DO FAAO received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from KCOM in 1978.
After internship, she and her husband ran a small family practice clinic in Portland,
Oregon and LaPlata, Missouri. In 1986, Dr Steele left family practice to take a residency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) at KCOM. After her residency, she taught
at KCOM in the OMM department and ran the hospital OMM consult service. Based on
that experience, she was author of the chapter on OMT in the hospital in the first edition
of Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine.
In 1992, she relocated to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she
is currently Associate Dean for Osteopathic Medical Education. In this position, she is responsible for the
integration of osteopathic principles and practices into the entire WVSOM curriculum from year one through
residency.
Dr Steele has a special interest in the efficacy of OMT in children, and her clinical practice is limited to the
osteopathic manipulative care of children. She has received funding for research projects on the effect of
OMT on recurrent pneumonia in children with severe physical handicaps and the effect of OMT on recurrent
acute otitis media.
Dr Steele is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine by the AOBNMM, Family Practice by the
AOBFP, credentialed by the Cranial Academy and earned the Fellowship in the AAO in 1995. She served as
President of the American Academy of Osteopathy in 2005-2006.

Nicholas Handoll DO MSCC graduated from the British School of Osteopathy in 1971 and
works in private practice in Hereford, England. He has been teaching the cranial concept
of osteopathy for over 20 years and he co-founded the Sutherland Cranial College in
1994.
His book Anatomy of Potency was published in 2000; it was translated into German in
2004. His osteopathic papers include The Osteopathic Management of Children with
Down's Syndrome, published in the British Osteopathic Journal in 1998, and a personal
view on Energy Medicine, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary
Medicine in February 2004.
He has been invited to speak recently at the annual convocations of the American Academy of Osteopathy,
the American Cranial Academy, the Australian Osteopathic Association and the German Osteopathic

MSc in Osteopathy
Larissa Lassovetskaia MD DO lives and practises in St Petersburg, Russia. After graduating from the Paediatric Medical Institute in 1988, she worked as a paediatrician for six
years, specialising in vertebro-neurology from 1994. Being dissatisfied with the allopathic approach to treatment, Dr Lassovetskaia started looking for alternatives, and in 1994
joined the Academy of Child Development - the first medical institution in Russia practising osteopathy. Since attending the basic course of osteopathy in Pomona (USA) organised by V. Frymann in 1995, she has been practising osteopathy exclusively. Dr
Lassovetskaia, with other Russian physicians, commenced 4 years part-time study at the
European School of Osteopathy (ESO) UK in 1996. Her research project focused on osteopathic care within the rehabilitation system for children with learning difficulties.
In 2001, Larissa Lassovetskaia, together with several graduates of the ESO, founded the Clinic of
Osteopathic Medicine, and now she is its Vice-Principal. In 2003 she became the Director of the Russian
Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, where her responsibilities include organisation of osteopathic education.
She has been an associated AOA member since 2001 and has taken part in several international meetings,
including those leading to the creation of the World Osteopathic Health Organisation.

The ESO has been for a number of years at the forefront of European Osteopathic Training Institutions in
offering a Masters Degree in Osteopathy, and is currently the only such institute in Europe. Our MSc
Programme is designed specifically to appeal to the practising osteopath as it is practice-based and
structured to offer minimal interference with practice-life. Additionally its phasing does allow for non-UK
based osteopaths to enrol as students.
The Programme content and delivery is applicable to both the new graduate and the mature practitioner as
it provides modules at the forefront of osteopathic thinking and training, coupled with a system of mentors
to provide support for the new graduate and essential peer review for the more mature practitioner.

Dr Lassovetskaia's research interests are mainly centred around peculiarities of osteopathic lesion formation in children and their differences from those in adults; the mechanics of breathing and its influence over
body balance, etc. She has presented her research findings at different conferences and congresses, and
has published in Russia and abroad.

The Programme is described as full-time. However, the user-friendly timetable in practice provides a
scheme of work that generally only requires enrolled students to attend classes over a long week-end once
a month in the first half of the Programme, and less than that in the second half. The MSc must be completed in a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years. It is divided into two equally weighted halves.
Assessment includes a reflective portfolio, case history presentation, various module-linked assessments

Steve Paulus DO MS is an American Osteopathic Physician who has practised osteopathy

and medicine in Northern California for 20 years. Having graduated from osteopathic
medical school in 1985, he completed a one-year rotating internship and then entered an
allopathic Family Medicine residency. Preceding medical school he had earned his
Masters of Science in Physiology, carrying out basic science research in muscle physiology.

ESO Research

Dr Paulus writes extensively on the topics of osteopathic history, philosophy, and his personal experiences of practising osteopathy. He maintains a website, www.interlinea.org,
that is an online journal and resource centre devoted to exploring the philosophy of osteopathy. He is profoundly interested in the original teachings of Andrew Taylor Still and integrates Dr Still's core principles into
his work as an osteopath.
Nplaz graduated from the ESO and is a member of the French Register
Ildiko Somody-N
of Osteopaths. She also obtained a BSc degree from the University of Paris V in Anatomy
applied to Clinical Examination and Medical Imaging. She is established in Paris with a
practice based on the 'Mechanical Link', a global diagnostic method developed originally by Paul Chauffour. Together with Eric Prat, Jacques Michaud and Olivier Dusser, Ildiko
Somody-Nplaz is a member of the teaching staff who, with the help of a team of assistants, are in charge of developing this methodology both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Mr Buset has been developing his techniques over the years following the laws of
functional anatomy. He will present a therapeutic approach and techniques applied to the
thoraco-mediastinal visceral sphere. This seminar will include anatomical description
necessary to understand and fully appreciate the therapeutic approach and the
techniques.
Mr Buset is a 1983 graduate of the European School of Osteopathy. He is in private
practice and lectures on visceral osteopathy internationally at undergraduate and MSc
level.

This seminar will examine the anatomy and applied anatomy of the oro-naso pharynx
and the hypoglossus. Practical sessions will be interspersed with the theory to enable
practitioners to improve their palpatory skills and learn new and revisit old techniques to
relieve problems associated with the area. Professor Frank Willard from the University of
New England Department of Anatomy is a featured speaker of most conferences held
by the American Academy of Osteopathy, the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation
and the European School of Osteopathy.

Mr Renzo Molinari is the Principal of the European School of Osteopathy. Over the past
25 years he has developed his skills as an osteopath and has increased his expertise
in different fields: obstetrics and gynaecology, for example. He has established a
Pregnancy Clinic, which is held regularly at the ESO, and has devised a Masters Unit in
Obstetrics in Osteopathy and a Masters module in Urogynaecological Approach in
Osteopathy.

This is an advanced class that trains practitioners to address very specific structures and
physiology of the brain and spinal cord. The body often aligns itself around these precise structures and they are frequently unaddressed key tissue restrictions. This work
requires perceptual skills to address tissue microstructures and we will have exercises
in the class to help build up these skills.

He co-founded the Collge Ostopathique Franais in France and became its first
Principal in 1988. He then moved to England in 1994 to take up a full-time position at
the European School of Osteopathy. He has developed the Osteopathic European
Academic Network and has been one of the driving forces in the creation of the World Osteopathic Health
Organisation. He has set up a number of schools of osteopathy around Europe and is an international
lecturer and a frequently featured speaker at international conferences.
This weekend will focus on the analysis of clinical cases relating to the uro-gynaecological functions,
identifying possible different etiologies and treatment approaches from biomechanical dysfunction to pure
visceral conditions. The weekend will alternate periods of theoretical presentations, practical workshops and
discussion time.

We will show powerful techniques that reconcile left and right brain approaches, for the whole ventricular
fluid system; we will go over the major components (nuclei) of the brain and learn different techniques to
help release them, including: corpus callosum, fornix, thalamus, putamen, globus pallidus, caudate nucleus, amygdaloid bodies, hippocampus, mamillary bodies, red nucleus, corpus nigra, pituitary, hypothalamus,
pineal, brainstem, cerebellum and associated nuclei, reticular formation, etc.
We will also present some techniques to help emotional trauma in relation to tissue and cellular "fear", as
well as techniques to regulate the reticular alarm system. This class will propose different ways to release
these structures, and once learned, you will understand how these structures are repeatedly one of the
most important and yet least often addressed component of somatic dysfunctions. For that reason, these
class techniques can probably help most of your patients, but will specifically help any brain and spinal
related pathologies including closed head injury, whiplash, headaches, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, cognitive
behavioural dysfunctions, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, post-meningitis syndrome, post-polio syndromes, birth difficulties or trauma, feeding difficulties, etc.

he served his internship at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Municipal Hospital in Guangzhou. He studied
Orthopaedic and Osteopathic medicines with several physicians through the American Association of
Orthopaedic Medicine. Dr. Marcus has published numerous articles in both Eastern and Western medical
journals and the books Acute Abdominal Syndromes Their Diagnosis & Treatment According to Combined
Chinese-Western Medicine (Blue Poppy Press 1991), Musculoskeletal Disorders: Healing Methods from
Chinese Medicine, Orthopaedic Medicine and Osteopathy (North Atlantic Books 1998), and Foundations for
Integrative Musculoskeletal Disorders (North Atlantic Books 2005). In 1995 he became a diplomate of the
American Academy of Pain Management. He has lectured internationally and taught courses in complementary orthopaedics for several years. In 1997 he was named Educator of the Year by the American Association
of Oriental Medicine.
