These top schools were placed into
gold, silver, bronze, or honorable men-
tion categories.
White Cloud High School earned a
Bronze Medal for successfully meeting
two of the three key performance indica-
tor criteria.
U.S. News uses a three-step process
that analyzes first how schools are edu-
cating all of their students, then their mi-
nority and disadvantaged students, and
finally their college-bound students.
One major challenge all of the na-
tion’s best public high schools are facing
is how to continue to challenge students
despite budget pressures, the report
noted.

November for their excellent displays

Second grade student, Elizabeth
Cammenga is the daughter of James
and Anne Cammenga. “Lizzy” said she
was “excited and happy” when Princi-
pal Brower announced her as a Patriot
of the Month. When asked to describe
what caring means, Lizzy shared, “It’s
like helping and all that…” As an ex-
ample of how to show caring behavior,
she said, “If somebody is stuck on a
word, you can help them get it.” Some
of Lizzy’s favorites include cheese balls,
purple (or blue), reading, writing, and
going to the theater. Dreaming of her
future, Lizzy shared she wants to be a
swimming instructor. She attends the

Dedicated Service Award to Adminis-
trative Services Assistant Julie Stock-
well during the college’s annual holi-
day celebration Dec. 18.
MCC President Bob Ferrentino
lauded Stockwell for her commitment
to the college and to the community.
“Julie is the first point of contact
for many people at MCC. She is a team
player who takes pride in serving stu-
dents and community members, and
her friendly demeanor helps people
feel at home,” Ferrentino said.
Stockwell, of Six Lakes, began
her career at MCC 19 years ago. She
has been recognized by her peers for
“jumping in to help” whenever the
need arises, making her a valuable as-
set to the college.
The award recognizes dedicated
service to MCC, commitment to high
standards of work performance, care
and concern for the public and fellow
employees, and creativity and innova-
tion. The MCC Board of Trustees ini-
tiated the award in 1986 as a posthu-
mous tribute to Perkins, the college’s
former Bursar.

Many experts have shared
their conclusions about how
cable television and the Internet
have kept countless Americans
on their behinds for longer peri-
ods of time. Ironically, while all
this has been going on, scientists
have been discovering the most
about health and exercise -- and
how staying active can ward off a
range of illnesses as we age.
What it comes down to is
this: there are fewer and fewer
excuses for letting your body run
its course without exercise. For
seniors, in particular, exercise
has been linked to reduced risk
for such ailments as prostate
cancer, osteoporosis, heart dis-
ease and stroke, among others.
There has been much new re-
search on the topic, with all signs
pointing seniors to the exercise
mat and away from the couch.
Indeed, with one out of six
men confronting prostate can-
cer at some point in life, the
Prostate Cancer Foundation re-
cently released a new “Nutrition,
Exercise, and Prostate Cancer”
guide, a series of new strategies
that help stem the development
and progression of prostate can-

guide. The key is combining ex-
ercise with a diet rich in fruits
and vegetables and low in pro-
cessed sugars and refined carbo-
hydrates.
A new study from Dr. Ste-
phen Freedland at Duke and the
Durham Veterans Affairs Hospi-
tal also underscores the impact
regular exercise has in protect-
ing men from prostate cancer,
while also making the disease
less aggressive.
More than anything else, the
combination of diet and exercise
looks to be a strong pre-emptive
step against many ailments.
With breast cancer a similarly
daunting disease among women,
healthy options unsurprisingly
have been linked to lifestyle,
particularly exercise and nutri-
tion. With as little as four hours
of exercise a week and a low-fat
diet, the risk of breast cancer can
be lessened. Abstaining from
drinking alcohol has also been
shown to decrease the risk of
breast cancer.
And there are plenty of ail-
ments that plague both older
men and women that can be
helped by exercise. Among them
is osteoporosis, which affects the
bone density of people as they
age. By focusing on exercises that
have a direct impact on the skel-
eton, like basketball or jumping
jacks, the symptoms of osteopo-
rosis can be avoided.
New research also shows
it’s never too late for seniors to
become active. Even those af-
flicted with Type 2 diabetes can
help turn things around with an

Shrinking the Bovine TB Zone

Changes aimed to help keep Michigan cattle farmers in business
LANSING — Michigan Department of
Agriculture (MDA) Director Don Koivisto
today announced the United States De-
partment of Agriculture (USDA) approved
shrinking the state’s Bovine Tuberculosis
(TB) Modified Accredited Zone (MAZ) to
a small area in northern Lower Michigan.
MDA also updated Michigan’s zoning or-
der in Public Act 466, as amended, the
Animal Industry Act to parallel the fed-
eral changes.
MDA’s zoning rule changes are effec-
tive January 4, 2010.
“After months of public hearings, ed-
ucational meetings, and discussions with
federal regulatory officials, we are happy
to report Michigan cattle producers and
MDA are one step closer to concentrating
our disease eradication efforts in the zone
where we know bovine TB exists,” Koivis-
to said. “Federal rule and zoning order
changes are based on the national pro-
gram and will help keep Michigan farm-
ers in business while preventing spread
of bovine TB outside of the zone.”
Bovine TB is a contagious bacte-
rial disease of cattle that can affect other
mammals, including humans. In 1917,
the federal government established a
nationwide Bovine TB Eradication Pro-
gram. The program assigns status levels
for each state based on the prevalence of
the disease in that state.
In 1994, a wild Michigan white-tailed
deer was diagnosed with a unique strain
of bovine TB. As a result, MDA began a
comprehensive surveillance plan to de-
termine the extent of the disease in Mich-
igan’s livestock.
Based on initial surveillance, USDA
downgraded Michigan’s Bovine TB Free
Status in 2000 from Free to Modified Ac-
credited. This drop in status resulted in
extensive restrictions on animal move-
ment with burdensome regulations on
Michigan’s cattle producers.
Since 1998, 46 Michigan cattle farms
and four privately owned cervid opera-
tions have been bovine TB positive. The
majority of farms have been depopulated.
In 2008, two cattle herds and one pri-
vately owned cervid operation were found
positive, and in 2009 only one cattle herd
and one privately owned cervid operation
have been confirmed positive for bovine
TB - all of these farms were in the smaller
MAZ.
MDA, in partnership with Michigan
State University Extension, will launch an
outreach and education campaign. Pro-
ducers in the affected areas will receive
an informational packet on the changes.
The new Michigan rules have different
regulatory applications for the following
zones and subzones:
Modified Accredited Zone (MAZ) -
Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Osco-
da, Presque Isle counties and those parts
of Iosco and Ogemaw counties north of
the southernmost boundaries of the Hu-
ron National Forest and the Au Sable
State Forest.
Modified Accredited
Advanced Zone
(MAAZ)
n Subzone 1 - Antrim, Charlevoix,
Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, and Ot-
sego counties.
n Subzone 2 - Arenac, Clare, Glad-
win, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Missau-
kee, Osceola, Roscommon, and Wexford
counties, and those portions of Iosco and
Ogemaw counties not included in the
MAZ.
n Subzone 3 - All counties in Lower
Michigan not included in the MAAZ Sub-
zone 1, Subzone 2, or the MAZ.

Upper Peninsula
The proposed bovine TB zonal bound-
aries were presented to the Michigan
Commission of Agriculture on July 21,
2009. Additionally, the proposed rules
were published in the legal section of 16
newspapers statewide, posted on both
the MDA and Emerging Diseases web-
sites, and were presented at public meet-
ings in July.

According to estimates by the
National Institute of Standards
and Technology, weights and
measures activities facilitate an
estimated $170 billion in com-
merce in Michigan. This includes
virtually all of Michigan’s $71.3
billion agricultural economy.

bons can not only lead to stomach aches, it can
get wrapped around your pets’ intestines, caus-
ing major problems, which may require surgical
intervention. Wrapping paper and glass orna-
ments may also pose threats. If eaten, these can
cause depression, upset stomach, vomiting or
diarrhea. Glass ornaments can cause internal
bleeding if shards make internal cuts. So be cer-
tain to keep these items out of your pets’ reach.
n A holiday tree can be a problem. If it’s
not properly secured, a curious kitty or peep-
ing pooch can knock it over. Water from your
holiday tree can also pose problems, so keep it
covered. Often, tree water may contain fertil-
izers or preservatives which can lead to an up-
set stomach. Pine needles are also dangerous if
swallowed, as they are sharp and have the po-
tential to puncture intestines. n Remember that people food and beverag-

lung tissue by using a straw and some wind power from their own lungs. The
heart’s chambers were identified and flagged with vocabulary tags. Teachers
assisted as needed, but the parents were the expert scientists in charge.
In addition to the dissection experience, the Montcalm Community
College nursing students provided stations to reinforce anatomy and CPR
steps. Students role-played emergency situations and how to start the CPR

This fall, the Tri County High School staff used their Professional Learning
Community (PLC) time to lend a hand to Helping Hands of Howard City.
Creativity reached across all curriculums as the “Specials” department hosted
a tile painting workshop. Teachers purchased supplies for working with
either four or six tiles. During the PLC time on November 23, teachers and
administrators met in the art room to paint their tiles. On December 14, staff
met once again and transformed their tiles into coasters, trivets, or serving
trays.
Art teacher, Carole Nielsen, and woods teacher, James Cain, were the
creative forces behind the project. Mrs. Nielsen was able to have “Glossie”
paints donated by Maureen Roslanic of Service Reproduction Company. These
paints made it possible
for teachers to paint a
design of their choice on
each tile. Mr. Cain and
his students constructed
the wood coaster holders,
trivets and trays. Also
contributing to the
project were Home Ec.
teacher, Mrs. Rodgers,
who baked the tiles
and Mrs. Dollberg who
helped in organizing and

As health care providers, one of the hardest things to face is the resistance of patients who do not want
to learn a healthier way to live. Many people want to have the doctor take care of them. They don’t want
to take responsibility for their own lives. We need to do more educating and less

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2008 there were 61,010 reported car-deer crashes with 12 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
