Looking Back, But

Moving Forward
I

remember a time when lowriding had far

less drama then again, those were the
days when you could also find duets in
R&B. Remember Rick James and Teena Marie
with Fire & Desire? But that gets me to my
point. How do we, the lowrider community,
infuse a little bit of fire and desire back into our
community?
Its a question we have to ask ourselves
both as individuals and as a community. Along
with the founding fathers of lowriding, weve
all built a culture thats being seen, felt, and
appreciated all across the globe. Yet as proud
parents of a culture thats continued to grow, I
will say this: I think part of this drama may be
from the growing pains of our industry getting
bigger. I also think its just a small hurdle thatll
pass as we continue to forge our pathway
forward. Just like business, our scene has seen
its fair share of guys who treated it like a hobby
and money-making opportunity, but in the end
its the enthusiasts and people who respect this
culture and heritage who will help it remain as
classic as the cars we build.
So how did this editors letter come to light?
It came as a result of watching the Japanese
lowrider community grow. Now some may
say that the Japanese lowriding scene died in
the late 90s, but I think thats when it really
began to grow. What did die back then was the
boom of money-making opportunities in the
lowriding community. The late 90s marked
the death of speculators and car-flippers, and
left standing in the wind were the purists
who really loved our culture and these are the
same soldiers who continue to hold down our
community today.
Now some people see Japans interest in
lowriding as a decade-old fascination, but its
not. Japan has been into lowriding for close to
30 years and it was only a decade ago that they
finally got the recognition they deserved. Yet
in reality, Japan didnt really take an
interest in lowriding, instead,
they adopted our culture
and embraced it with respect
while paying homage to it in
its full entirety.
If youve ever been around
any lowrider from Japan
youll see that theyre eager

6 Lowridermagazine.com

to learn about our culture so they can better

understand the evolutionary history, backing,
and spirit of our cars and in essence, this is
what lowriding is all about. Lowriding is about
pouring your soul and passion into your car,
not to mention your paychecks, and its all a
result of the way weve been brought up. Our
cars are a portal of self-expression and the
blank canvases we use to create memories
and traditions. The bottom linethis isnt some
hobby thats done to pass time and look cool,
this is a culture that tells stories about hard
work and dedication, and a craft with roots that
run deep. In short, lowriding is just as much a
part of our family unit as it is an essential part
of our DNA.
That said, its impressive that our fellow
brothers from Japan take lowriding this
seriously. It says a lot about why theyre
interested and proves that it goes beyond
speculation and making a quick buck. From the
way they dress to the way they customize
lowriders, they didnt only adapt to our
lifestyle, but they helped evolve, and even
improve and inspire our culture in ways that
we could only appreciate and applaud.
Anyone whos played host to one of our
fellow familia from Japan will understand that
when they visit us in Los Angeles, they do
so in order to value, recognize, analyze, and
interpret what it is we do, how we do it, and
how we live. They take notes as if lowriding
were a college course and they do so with
enthusiasm. To say that theyre passion for
lowriding is commendable, would
be an understatement and
after years of watching
them progress its left many
of us wondering if we
appreciate what weve

built as much as they do.

Now I say that with all due respect to the
lowriding community, but we really have
to wonder where were headed with what
weve built. Were the ones responsible for
building these legacies and spreading the love
of the lifestyle, but sometimes I wonder if we
appreciate the culture and want to promote
it as much as they do. Theyve upped the bar
when it comes to building quality show cars
and their unwavering passion is bar none. You
can see it in their builds; you can feel it at their
shows. Its also quite evident that theyve taken
what theyve learned from L.A. street culture
and added their own finesse, and when it comes
to club outings and meet-ups it reminds me
of the good ol days back at Legg Lake and
Whittier Blvd.
That said, their unwavering passion for our
culture is our doing, and its our responsibility
to uphold what weve built. Yet we have a social
responsibility to do more than just uphold it, we
need to move it forward with a positive focus
so future generations can enjoy and experience
lowriding at its finest. So in closing, shoot us
some ideas on how we can expand and spread
the love of lowriding because we built this
together and itll either flourish or fail at our
own hands. Q

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 11

he quest to build a lowrider is more

a matter of money and patience
than it is decisions. For the most
part, building a lowrider requires very little
decision-making skills up until it comes time
to choose a color. On a basic level, we already
know that a lowrider will have a set of wires,
a fresh new interior, and maybe a mural or
two, but the one part that always seems
to have us baffled is choosing that right
color. On the real, just choosing to go with a
solid paintjob leaves us with a multitude of
options. That can be complicated enough,
but try something thats multi-colored and
I couldnt even imagine how one puts it all
together.
Thankfully, we have skilled painters
who can put it all together, and from there
its really a crapshoot as to wholl like it and
who wont. Radical paint schemes are one of
those niche arenas (and fields of expertise)
where the crowd will either love it or
leave it, but for this 73 Riviera its all win.
With bodywork and paint done by skilled
artisans Jack & Freddys, this bath of paints
sports a Skittles bag of colors thats all tied
in to perfection. Its an attention grabber
thatll have you in a daze as you become
immersed in the colorful palate, and a
definite throwback that pays homage to the
lowriders of yesterday.
The Riviera serves as a trip down memory
lane, and inside, the full custom interior
sports an organic, yet vintage appeal and
thats all thanks to Mr. Horiuchi who helped
design it. Its a cushy interior that plays well

with the reds and golds, and once inside, its

just a matter of a few flicks of the switches
and then youre treated to an out-of-body
experience. The full custom hydraulic
setup by Cholos required the frame to be
C-notched, but its what literally lays down
the foundation. Navigation of the vehicle
is done via the mandatory chain steering
wheel and its the final touch for a cockpit
thats built to please.
Owned by Kuniyosho Ishis from Gifu,
Japan, this Riveira is an all-star stunner
that drives past language barriers and
geographical lines. You see, lowriding can
be seen as something as simple as a hobby
involving cars and fancy paintjobs, but
in reality its a cultural movement that
speaks many languages. But ask anyone to
translate that language and theyll all tell
you the same thing because at the end of the
day lowriding is about family, pride, respect,
and the need to be different. Q

11TH ANNUAL

MOPONA
CAR SHOW AND SWAP MEET

By Beto Mendoza

or the 11th year, Yoshiaki Kakishita

and his crew have been organizing
the increasingly popular Mopona Car
Show and Swap Meet. This show is one of the
largest in Japan and its numbers are growing
exponentially. With nearly 400 cars in
attendance (a large number for a Japan show),
the consolidation and merger of a swap meet
and car show proves to be the secret recipe
for the shows success. Easily described as
The Pomona Swap Meet meets the The
Majestics New Years Picnic, this show was
a gathering of parts, people, and fun to

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 17

celebrate the lowrider lifestyle. Also included in the show was a hop
as well as a fair-style food court.
The show is thrown in a hidden parking lot next to the Edosaki
Country Club in Inashiki, Japan (about an hour north of Tokyo) and
the remote location still doesnt stop folks from attending. As a
matter of fact, many of the car clubs have made it an annual tradition
to caravan to the show and it starts just about two hours away in
Fukaya, Japan. By the time we reached the show, we witnessed

18 Lowridermagazine.com

plenty of stop-offs as well as the obligatory

hopping and scraping on the freeway. In
essence, this cruise (which gets about 100
cars deep) tends to become another reason
why the show has become so popular
and the cruise in itself is an epic and very
memorable moment.
So if you ever decide to come out to this
show make sure that you connect with
some of the car clubs that caravan, as
that is one of the shows highlights. Check
them out on Facebook at Facebook.com/
Mopona.Swapmeet for upcoming shows. Q

CRUISE NIGHT
Cruising on a Wednesday
By Beto Mendoza

22 Lowridermagazine.com

few days into our trip we traveled

into Central Japan to the port city of
Nagoya. It was there we met up with
longtime lowrider Kiyo of Viejitos car club.
Knowing that we were going to be there for
just a few days, Kiyo took it upon himself
to show us the commitment of the lowrider
community in Japan by calling up a few of his
friends to come out on a cruise with us on a
Wednesday night. He decided to do it at a rest
area where it would be big enough to hold
everyone. This was easily the coldest night of
our trip and we assumed that only a handful
of his close friends would show up, especially
since it was set up last minute.
To our surprise, we pulled and had already
seen dozens of lowriders cruising up and
down. We estimated that close to 100
lowriders came out on this cold Wednesday
night and to say that the lowrider community

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 23

in Japan
is hot is an
understatement.
People kept hitting
switches, scraping,
hopping, and threewheeling all night long
until local authorities broke
it up. I would like to thank Kiyo
for setting this up and would like
to thank the whole lowrider community of
Central Japan for coming out and showing a lot
of heart, because truthfully I dont think that
I would be able to set up a last-minute cruise
during a cold work day and have that many
cars come out. Q

Angelinos and its a car thats got deepseated roots for both lowrider and hot

due to its elegant, long, and low-slung design,
while others take pride in the fact the 58 model
was assembled in South Gate, California. Yet
regardless your standpoint, the one thing that
cant be argued, is that its a ride that commands
respect.
In all, the chrome trim and angular lines
present a car that speaks volumes about
design sophistication. Its rounded fins, shorter
greenhouse, and longer rear deck make the
car look like a beast and this one here (shot in all
black) makes it that much more menacing.
With a construction time of two years and a
total of $25,000 spent on top of the purchase
price, this 58 owned by Kenichi Nakazato, is no
run-of-the-mill piece. Rather, its a somewhat
traditional build that features artwork by that

a legend in his own right, and at first glance my first inclination

of how suspect it would be to carry it around the show and ship it
back to L.A.
With that asinine idea out of the question, a quick overview

hen Susumu Kaminouchi from

Gunma, Japan, first picked up his
lowrider, it cost him a hefty sum
of $50,000. Now, while its not unheard of,
nor a surprise to classic car enthusiasts to
pay such a number, its definitely a sign of
the times and proof that now is the time you
should buy the car of your dreams. Now keep
in mind that Susumo lives in Japan, so theres
definitely a markup, but needless to say its a
lot of money for a vehicle that originally cost
just under $3,000 at the time of its release
in 1959.
Ask just about any old timer about
the value of cars that have now been
deemed collector cars, and theyll tell you
depressing stories about a time where they
were once a dime a dozen and only worth a
few thousand dollars and plentiful at that.
Sure, the same story could be said about
many of the classics that roll our way, but
that serves as further proof that you should
save up for what you want now.

Gunma

Now what were sharing with you is far

from rocket science and no award-winning
discovery. Rather, its just a reminder and
simple observation that nothing worth
looking at is ever going to be cheaper than
it is now. Keep in mind that this doesnt
apply strictly to just a 59 Impala. As each
year passes, and classic cars become harder
to find, theres really no telling where the
ceiling stops when it comes to potential
pricing.
As for Susumu, his car will most likely
end up a keeper since hes invested plenty
of time and hard work into personalizing
and maintaining his Impala. From the

34 Lowridermagazine.com

custom paintjob to the full custom interior

and hydraulic setup, Susumu did much of
the handywork himself. As the owner of a
shop called Ultimate Hydro, and a member
of Ultimate Weapons C.C., his car serves
as a rolling showcase for his work, while
doubling as a passion project that flaunts
stellar results. Appropriately enough he
calls his car Green Grass and were pretty
sure that theres more to the name than just
the association with the color. Needless to
say green grass hits a high note with us over
here at LOWRIDER and were proud that hes
a part of the movement weve all created
together. Q

slowing down. His collection of hard-to-find
bomb accessories would make any collector
jealous, and its one that automatically gains
the respect of any bomb enthusiast because
they would know that the acquisition
of such rare parts would take years of
exploration at swap meets and farms.
His journey began over two decades ago
with the purchase of a 1978 Oldsmobile.
At that time no one in this area ever saw
a lowrider, he says. It was Yamasaki and
Kiyo who started lowriding. At the time you
would only find the pair cruising the streets
of Central Japan and five years later the
passion never died so they decided to open
up a shop. Appropriately enough he called
his shop Cruise and that would be the
beginning of a new revolution.

38 Lowridermagazine.com

Kiyo has dedicated his life to lowriders,

but he had never flown a car club plaque until
just recently. He met Crazy Jorge on one of his
trips to Southern California. I met a member
of Viejitos Car Club at a show in Montebello,
California, and from there I was introduced to
Crazy Jorge. Kiyo had already known plenty
about the Viejitos and Crazy Jorge through
the Internet. He saw a video of Crazy Jorge
hopping his Packard and it was that moment
that really caught his attention.
Five years ago is when Kiyo opened up his
Japan chapter of Viejitos. His membership
grew from the people he used to cruise
with as well as some his customers. With
the gears in overdrive, he also ended up
buying the bomb wagon you see displayed
here. It was purchased four years ago from
California and he found it online and bought
it for his wife. The 51 pickup needed a lot of
work when he first got it, and even though
it has come a long way, its still a work

in progress. Kiyo would like to thank his

family, his club members, his staff at Cruise,
and everyone else who has helped him
throughout the years. Q

ooking back (not so long ago) I remember

a time when 100 mph was fast; when
my friends who are locked up sent
letters, and I even remember when we used
to play music on an 8-track, and our television
had a cord attached to the remote. Back then
it all seemed amazing, but fast forward to
present day and now weve got cars that go
faster than 200 mph, my friends in prison
now email me, and when it comes to music
and television I can do it all on a smartphone.
While Im in no rush to ever go back to
such archaic ways, the one thing thats
never really changed is the elegance of
classic cars. Even in the ugliest of vehicles
theres a nostalgic feel and an imposing
presence brought on by these monsters.
Their lines flow, their designs are imposing,
and most modern-day cars take some sort of
inspiration or design cue from them.
Take this 1935 Plymouth PJ for example.

With smooth lines and fresh contours, its

incredible to think that it was introduced
as being the biggest low-priced car on the
market that used 20 percent less fuel than
its competitors, so technically a Prius of the
30s. Needless to say, they sold over 350,000
units again a small number compared to the
10 million Camrys that have been sold.
But of the 350,000 sold theres probably
none that can match the beauty of this one
that we found in Nagoya, Japan. Owned by
Hitomi Kato of Pharaohs CC, this bomb sports
its original flathead six tuned by Cholos
Customs and an exquisite paintjob that was
laced by Jack & Freddys. Its a definite head
turner that sits on classic 14-inch Cragar
wires and its ground-hugging stance comes
by way of airbags. Of course the model,
Panchita is a site herself, but the beauty
found in both of them is indicative of times
yet changing again.

To see this lowrider hit the streets of Japan

is mesmerizing. It allows you to witness
lowrider culture from an entirely different
perspective, while giving you the pride in
knowing that our culture has no boundaries.
For more than a decade, Japan has embraced
our culture and lifestyle, while also adopting
the attention to detail and loyalty that we
all embrace, and that, my friend, is what our
world is all about. Q

Custom
Shop Seats
Ultimate Hydraulics
By Beto Mendoza

s the guys from One Forty Rollerz car club in Fukaya, Japan, took us
for a tour of lowrider shops in the suburbs of Japan, we stopped at
Ultimate Hydraulics in Gunma, Japan. Custom car builder and shop
owner Susumu Kaminouchi felt the need to have custom couches built for his
potential clients to relax in while they wait for their vehicle to be serviced. He
built two of them out of car parts and seats. The first built using 1964 Impala
quarter panels that have a custom-patterned paintjob. The original rear seats
feature stock leather and suede on a stock pattern. The second one has a
custom candy paintjob on Cadillac quarter panels and an original Cadillac seat.
Clients can rest here while reading an issue of LOWRIDER Magazine, as he has
decades of magazines stacked next to the seats. Q

PARADISE
ROAD
SINCE 1987
By Beto Mendoza

ince February of 87, the Japanese hot

rod and lowrider community has never
been the same, thanks to a new facility
and custom shop thath was opened by Junichi
Shimodaira. The shop, called Paradise Road,
is nestled in Nagoya, Japan, and has become
revered as the place to find rare and hard-tofind American cars as well as their parts. The
shops soaring popularity not only caught local
attention, but also the attention of Kustom
Kulture icon Ed Big Daddy Roth, and back in
2001 even Mr. Roth took the time out of his
schedule to pay a visit to the shop.
As with most shops, there will always be
that one car that marks the pinnacle of their
growth and achievement, and for Paradise
Road it was in 2002 when Junichi took the
shops popularity over the top by building a
1930 Ford Model A Tudor. That car ended up
becoming a full show vehicle that he named
Rod Riguez and it attracted worldwide
attention and publicity by blending hot rod,
custom, and lowrider styles in a unique way. It
is also one of the cars credited for paving the
way for the Japanese rod and custom scene
in the early 2000s, and a car that legends are
made of.
Junichi started the build of the Model A
by Zing the frame in order to get the lowest
stance possible; he also channeled the
body over the frame. Custom canted quad
headlights were made out of the front bumper
ends off a 1959 Cadillac, while the seats were
crafted from scratch and then mounted on the
floor. A gold paintjob completed the build of Rod

Riguez, and once the spirits cured it made its

debut at the 2002 Yokohama Hot Rod Custom
Show where it won Best Body Work, Best
Street Rod, and the Street Rodders Pick Award.
After the show Junichi tore the car down
for a redo and started by chopping the front
pillars 4 inches, the middle pillars 2 inches, and
leaving the rears stock. He sculpted one-off
fenders out of metal and then molded them
into the running boards. The second version
had a tequila gold paintjob and debuted at
the 2003 Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show.
By days end, Junichi won the 2003 Hot Rod
Custom Show Best of Show award as well
as the George Barris Pick Award, the Street
Rodders Pick Award, and the Line Drs Pick
Award.
Yet beyond the awards and recognition,
what became even more important was the
street and industry cred for his business as
a top-notch builder. In 2005, Rod Riguez was
shipped to the U.S. for its maiden appearance at
the Grand National Roadster Show and Cruisin
Nationals. Needless to say, the car never made
it back and ended up being purchased after its
tour of duty.
With his project done, it was time to get back
into his groove so after a little brainstorming
he began to build a 1927 Ford Model T roadster
pickup. The truck build was another radical
build that he was trying to complete for
the upcoming Yokohama show and due to
bad time constraints, he never completed
the vehicle, but did end up entering the car
anyways. Void of paint and an unfinished

chassis, Junichi entered it into the show and

history would repeat itself again. The car
was sold and in keeping with his passion for
constantly creating he was off to his vision
board where he pictured a custom 1927 Ford
Model T roadster. Needless to say, his project car
was bought shortly after and since he wanted
the car built beyond even his wildest dreams,
he appropriately ended up calling that car,
Galaxian.
Till today, that car remains parked inside
Paradise Road, and for once it looks like hes
got a keeper that hes not willing to part with.
Soon enough LRM will be checking back with
this historic builder to see the ultimate fate
of the car, but regardless if he has a change of
heart, were positive that there are many more
exciting projects that will be debuted from this
creative artist. Q

HISTORICAL

ROOTS
A PENTHOUSE VIEW OF TOKYO

By F. Valdeavilla
Photos by Beto Mendoza

oday, convertibles seem to be an option

reserved for those with some extra
money to blow, but it wasnt always
this way. If you look back in history youll find
that most cars were manufactured as either

54 Lowridermagazine.com

open coupes or convertibles, but that all

changed when Cadillac introduced the United
States first closed-body car back in 1910.
While some tend to believe that convertibles
met their demise because of the demand for

Tokyo

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 55

increased safety standards, the real truth is

that the demand for convertibles decreased
simply because of a change in consumer
demand, the increased cost to make them,
as well as the most important fact that air
conditioning systems vastly improved, thus
making them the new must-have.
That said, the last years of the Cadillac
Eldorado (in specific, the 76) were marketed

56 Lowridermagazine.com

to American consumers as the last of

American convertibles. Yet even after that
occurred, the demand for verts slowly
tapered away, and those who wanted
a convertible could still get them built.
These custom-ordered convertibles, often
referred to as coach built convertibles,
were manufactured by outside parties and
the work put into them was incredible. From

reconfiguring the interior to restructuring

the frames, the process involved adding a few
hundred pounds of steel in order to maintain
the structural integrity of the vehicle, and
that was all done prior to even removing the
roof.
Because of the hefty price tag attached to
doing such as job, the amount of customers
wiling to spend that kind of money dwindled

and the production numbers of convertibles

dropped once again. Interestingly enough,
that makes owning one of these 80s
throwbacks (most of which were produced
by Hess & Eisenhardt) that much more
precious and thats exactly what youre
looking at here. This rare historical artifact
was built and once owned by John Kennedy

58 Lowridermagazine.com

of Bowtie Connection.
Now the vehicle sits in splendor in Japan,
where the new owner, Yoshiaki Kakishita,
shows it on the regular, and he does so with
pride. The vehicle is a head turner with a big
history and after the original owner took
the car down to pieces, the first major mod
they did was mold a Euro clip onto the front.

The new clip gave it a much-deserved 90s

feel, and to help complement the motif, he
had interior revamped in leather, but with a
90s pattern. The car was then taken to paint
where it was treated to an Infinity Green
paintjob, prior to having that ninja, OG Abel,
hit the trunk with a mural worth dying for.
During the shoot, you could see the pride

that Yoshiaki Kakishita of Japan felt as the owner of the car,

and although hes owned it for more than a decade, hell be
the first to tell you that he fell in love with the car when he
first laid eyes on it, and its exactly why he had to have it.
Needless to say, Yoshiaki shows the LeCab with pride, and
as a member of Continental Kings, he brings it out on the
regular and maintains the car as if it were his first-born. Q

LOWRIDER
CAR
SHOW
THE 2013 TOUR FINAL

62 Lowridermagazine.com

By Beto Mendoza

he 2013 Lowrider Japan Tour kicked off in

the port city of Nagoya in Central Japan on
March 31 before heading to Yamagata and
Okayama. We caught up with the tour in their
fourth and final stop on November 17 in Tokyo,
Japan. The show took place at Makuhari Event
Hall. The event hall was only filled up to half
its capacity with show cars, while the parking
lot was flooded with lowriders. When we asked
some of the spectators who left their cars in
the parking lot as to why they didnt enter, we
always got one of two answers: Its too expensive
to enter their car or their car isnt to the level of
having it in the show.
The cars that did make it into the show were
all quality cars from clubs such as Life in the
Ghetto, Professionals, Homies, Continental Kings,
Honesty, Eternal Impress, and a few others. The

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 63

hop contest is easily the biggest attraction at the show as there are
almost as many hoppers participating in the hop, as there are show cars
on display. From single to double and radical truck to my favorite hopoff tournament. The hop off tournament starts off with eight cars; two
nose off against each other until you are left with the winner.
We would like to thank the guys over at Y-Tech and One Forty Rollerz
for helping us out and guiding us along our journey. Log on to www.

eye. It was your first love even though you probably
never talked to her, and years later youd go on to obsess
and always remember her. While Id rather not mention mine
(because shes since become a behemoth of some sorts) I will,
however, talk about Americas favorite girl the 1957 Chevrolet
Bel Air.
Its safe to say that the Bel Air has become Americas
sweetheart and is one of the most recognized icons of the car
world. With its elegant rear fins and anodized aluminum side trim
panels, it comes as no surprise that this would be the car I would
lose my virginity in at least in terms of being the first lowrider

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 67

I rode in. So when it came time to do a feature

on this car, let alone any 57 Bel Air, its safe
to say that Ive got fond memories of hitting
Whittier Blvd and listening to Blue Magics
Side Show.
So when we had a chance to check out
this beauty owned by Yoshitaka Torii, it
definitely brought back some memories.
Seeing it sitting pretty at the show made
our photographer want to see more and it
certainly did not disappoint. Its a show car
built to drive, and the attention to detail on
the hardtop coupe was great. With its front
wires exposed and the skirts ghosting out
the rear, it provides the car with a certain
elegance and sense of mystery that just
makes you want to stare.
These cars, as with any lowrider, resonate
a feeling that simply makes you feel good.
Theyre nostalgic, a tribute to a time when
life was simple, and also indicative of an
era where the family unit and relationships
revolved around love, respect, and longevity.
Its not to say that these values no longer
exist, its just that theyre harder to find.
68 Lowridermagazine.com

In short, if I were to compare it to the car

culture it would hold true that the good
relationships and the ones who truly
cherish it are much like lowriders theyre
hard to find and rare to see, but when you
do, you appreciate it. As for the rest? Well

its much like the rest of the cars we see on

the road plentiful, non-memorable, and
not built to last.
Well see you all in the next issue and
in the meantime keep the drama like your
basslow. Q

magine creating something so cool that

you could actually trademark the name?
Well thats what happened with HarleyDavidson when they introduced the FXST
Softail in 1984. The word softail has been a
registered trademark with Harley-Davidson
since that launch, and gone on to become one
of the most popular platforms for lowrider
enthusiasts to build upon.
If youve ever straddled a softail youll know
that its no high-revving crotch rocket, but
instead a cruiser with comfort to kill for. Then
again, with bikes like this one in particular, it
would be a sin to shoot around the streets at
the blink of an eye when youve invested all this

72 Lowridermagazine.com

time and effort into making it look this good.

This 2005 HD, owned by Koji Fukushima,
has been appropriately called La Vicla. As a
member of One Forty Rollerz, the bike is the
perfect exemplification of what the clubs
standards require for entry. For visuals, the
cruiser sports a fusion of yellow, brown, and
gold tones to give this bike a classic yet gangster
appeal, and depending on the time of day it
shifts colors accordingly. Powering the beast is
a twin cam 88B and all the necessary amenities
have either been chromed or polished. Its
definitely a twist and a site to see, especially
when one considers that it makes its home in
the land known best for scooters and mopeds.

In all, this is yet another classic

interpretation of the Mexican-American
subculture weve built along with our
founding fathers of lowriding. Sure its an
adaptation of the cars we hop and cruise in,
but its definitely got that twist giving it the
same amount of credit and respect in our
community. In addition, lowriding is not only a
way of life that is spreading like wildfire, but a
culture that discriminates against none. Sure
the growth comes in spurts and in slow and
steady rates, but in the end, slow and steady
always wins the race.
The bottom linewe make the struggle
look good. Q

Souki
Japanese Airbrusher
By Beto Mendoza

ouki is a multitalented artist from

East Japan and when it comes to the
lowrider mural game hes a rare and
much-desired commodity. Among the cars he
owns is a black 1964 Impala hopper, a 1962
Impala show car (that made the cover of
the Japan version of LOWRIDER Magazine),
a Datsun C210, as well as a Lamborghini
Diablo.
Lowriders with murals started hitting
Japanese soil back in the 90s during the
exportation boom and many of the ones sent
featured artwork from the likes of OG Abel
and Fonzy just to name a few. During that
time, the Japanese market was buying fully
built lowriders from brokers (thus giving
them no say in what kind of airbrushing
went on the car), and thats when the
demand for custom airbrushing started.
Souki used his 62 convertible as a canvas
to display his work and on it he airbrushed
fully nude and scantily clad women on the
trunk, sides, and engine compartment of
his car. From there, the car went on tour to
local shows and Souki dominated the custom

JANUARY 2015 Lowrider 75

mural market in Japan.

As with any artist, theyre always trying to explore
new avenues of art so hes also exploring the music
industry. Im sure that his skills and creativity will
offer added value to his journey, and soon enough
were sure to hear from The Rude Playerz, the group
hes in that uses a talk box like that of Zapp and Roger.
We wish him luck and know that he will succeed in
any artistic endeavor that he pursues. Q

cant recall the first time I saw a 64 Impala,

but I do vividly remember seeing my first
64 Impala lowrider. Today I still remember
seeing the candy blue Impala sitting off Beverly
and Rosemead Blvd., and asking myself the
questions that most newcomers wonder, How
does it get so low? Can it drive like that?
Its been decades since those questions
have been answered, and while the innocent
curiosity is gone, the passion and admiration for
them is still there. Its pretty amazing how one
mans creation can affect someone elses life and
I wish I would have remembered the guys name
who owned the Impalabecause Id to thank
him. Since that day, Ive come to learn more
about lowriding, and the more I learn, the more
I realize how much I dont know or how short I
am financially from building one.

along Im that much more appreciative of the time,
money, dedication, and headaches spent getting it all
together. Kamal Fernando owns this 64 from Japan
and its a definite looker. Though some may consider
this car tame in comparison to complete show cars,
its a build thats best suited for those who truly
want to enjoy their cars on the streets. While theres

nothing wrong with having trailer queens

and showroom sitters, its cars like this that
will influence another generation of lowriders.
Cars like this are active on the streets and
give our culture more face time with innocent
bystanders. From there, the magnetism of
the cars in our culture do the rest of the work
influencing a new breed of people who will go on
to respect and hopefully become active in the
scene.
These photographs showcase the
excellence found overseas. This issue in
particular brandishes an epic array of cars, and
the shortage of information still creates an
intriguing mystery that serves as the backbone
of our industry. Simply putwithout mystery,
there is no curiosity and without that, there is
no interest.

Cadillacd in Tokyo

o leave no stone unturned is an

idiom that applies to just about every
car customizer out there, but more so
for hot rod and lowrider builders. Our cars are
our lives, our extended families, and a piece
of the family heritage that often gets passed
from one generation to the next.
Though most of our builds are traditionally
done on classics, the movement has long been
an influencing factor for even late-model cars
84 Lowridermagazine.com

and trucks and this is a great example. This

Cadillac EXT owned by the president of Solid CC
speaks volumes about lowrider lifestyle. From
the paint scheme to the exquisite interior, it
could almost be thought of as an extreme or
radical build, and this one hails from Tokyo,
Japan. Owned by Yoriaki Satake, this Cadillac
boasts a long list of mods thatd fit well into the
Cali scene. Its extreme and elaborate paintjob
is an extension of the interior and its a definite

head turner that grabs the attention of men,

women, and children.
With street scene murals found on the
inside of the tailgate, the EXT walks tall in the
world of customs and it comes as no surprise
that the name of the truck is, Da Wild Player
Dos. That said, we tip our hats to the homies
in Japan that support and push our movement
and this is just the beginning of many crazy
customs that youll come to find in Japan. Q

PERFORMANCE

f it isnt one thing, its definitely another

when it comes to modifying suspension,
changing wheel offsets, etc. But, more often
than not, theres always a fix for those things.
In this particular situation, the 14x8 reverseoffset Tru-Ray spokes on our 68 Impala rubbed the
fender lip something youre typically stuck with,
as the addition of aftermarket disc brakes generally
moves the wheels outward. Well, this isnt a typical
situation, as Classic Performance Products (CPP)
has their original-offset kit for full-size 65-68
Chevrolets (6568WBK-SO), which brings the wheel
mounting surface back into the stock location. This,
ultimately, provides some needed clearance for the
5.20-14 Premium Sports bias-plies.
Using a separate brake rotor, or hat, and hub,
CPP is able to narrow the track width 1 inches
overall (-inch on each side). Ultimately that
sucks the wheels back in where they were when
the Impala rolled out of the factory in the 60s
with drum brakes (actually, a bit narrower). Same
1-inch thick, 11-inch diameter rotors; same bigbore GM calipers; same superior stopping power,
but without the tire rub.
Whether installing a complete kit from bare
spindles out (as we initially did) or swapping rotors
and calipers out, the CPP kits are as straightforward
as youre going to find. And they work. In last
months issue we added rear brakes, now heres part
two with the front discs installed. Q

adding grease to the hub races as well.
9. With a seal installation tool or

carefully install the rear dust seal with
the inner wheel bearing in place.
10. Verify both inner and outer bearings fit spindle snug. Any marring or
excess wear on the spindle shaft should
be addressed.
11-12. While spinning the hub, set the
bearing preload. Carefully tighten the
axle nut until the bearings are seated
(no more than 12 lb-ft); untighten just

AIR LOWRIDER
JUST ANOTHER WAY TO LAND ON THE GROUND

FOR MORE OF THIS LOWRIDER FEATURE, CRUISE ON

OVER TO WWW.LOWRIDERMAGAZINE.COM

hen it comes to lowering a

lowrider to the pavement,
hydraulic suspensions have
been installed on mostly all lowriders
traditionally now for over 50 years. When
that era or history of custom-applied
hydraulic lifts started out, General Motors
was also introducing air suspensions as
standard equipment on their 57 Cadillac
Eldorado. The purpose of air suspension,
then and now, was to raise and lower a
vehicle to provide a smooth and constant
quality ride.
Today, air ride suspensions have become
more popular as they are customized for
every application, be it street rods, trucks,
SUVs, bombs, and classic lowriders as well.
Air ride suspension systems basically have
small electric air compressors (such as
VIAIR) that pressurize an on-board air tank/
reservoir that stores compressed air to fill up
the air springs (bags) in order to lift or lower
a vehicle to a specific height.
The installation and configuration of
these systems varies for different makes

92 Lowridermagazine.com

and models, but the underlying principle

remains the same. The vehicles original
metal spring (coil or leaf) is removed, and
an airbag, also referred to as an air spring,
is inserted or fabricated to fit in place of the
factory spring. An adjustable suspension
can allow vehicles to sit extremely low,
yet be able to elevate at a level high
enough to maneuver over obstacles
and inconsistencies on paved surfaces.
When you release the air through the
valves in an air suspension system, the
bags decompress, allowing the vehicles
suspension to be lowered to a certain
point depending on where the installer
decides the vehicles limits can or should
go. This alteration allows the user to make
adjustments (high or low) by simply pressing
an electric button or switch.
In this suspension tech article we are
installing a quality air ride suspension
system on a 1968 Chevy Impala Super
Sport only to demonstrate how these types
of systems are basically installed. In this
article we dont actually make comparisons

to traditional old-school hydraulic

suspensions versus new school airbag
technology, because If you took the same
amount of money to purchase a hydraulic
suspension or an air ride suspension there
would be no difference in eithers ride
comfort.
When hydraulics are applied with front
and back shocks and the correctly rated coils
they are comparable to the ride comfort
of air suspensions. The only difference
between both worlds is six batteries versus
a couple of 5-gallon air tanks and oil leaks
versus air leaks. In the end it really doesnt
matter at all, because they both leak, and
yes, one of the systems does become a little
messier when it does.
The most important point about altered
suspensions is that you must have quality
products and the right person to install
the system. We all know that there are
plenty of installers out there who give both
suspension worlds a bad name. When it
comes down to it its your choice as to which
suspension you choose. All that matters is

that your ride should achieve maximum

ride comfort and also lay down on the
ground. Now follow along as we bring
out only the best equipment in a bolt-on
air suspension install so that this Super
Sport locks and lays on a cloud. Q

here are two different types of

window regulators: manual window
regulators and electric window
regulators. Manual window regulators have
handles you can crank to raise or lower the
window. Manual window regulators cause
spur gears and the worm gear to create a
rotation, which causes the plates to move
and thus either lowers or raises the windows.
Electric window regulators are much easier
and more convenient. Simply by pushing a
button, your windows either go up or down
electronically.
The history of power-assisted windows
began as the Packard Automobile Company
first introduced them way back in 1940
and soon thereafter, Lincoln and Cadillac
followed suit. Power-assisted mechanisms
originated because of the need and desire to
move convertible tops up and down by some
means other than manual labor. Limousine
divider windows came first, and then the
power-assisted driver door and rear windows
eventually followed.
Luxury cars and certain brand models
came fully loaded with accessories that also
included power windows. Side-door windows

of a car, since people are always lowering

or raising their windows, depending on
whether they want air or are too cold.
Because of this factor, the inside door
window assemblies, like the window track
guides and the window regulators, always
run the risk of wearing down and breaking.
When you have a classic automobile like
the Super Sport Impala project we have
here, most times these vehicles came with
a manual hand-crank window assembly.
Besides restoring or customizing your classic
ride into the dream car you wish for, we also
want to include every luxury accessory
possible that came with that years certain
make and model. For this LOWRIDER Garage
feature we take a manual hand-cranked
window assembly that came with this
featured fourth-generation Super Sport and

convert it over to an electric power window

system and assembly.
If your vehicle also did not come
equipped with power windows, then
you will need to find the exact car at
a salvage yard with power windows
that were factory installed and remove
the entire system, electric motor, and
switches too. You will have to decide if
you will be replacing the side door panels
to accommodate the new switch you just
acquired, or, you will have a hole in your
existing panel from the hand-crank handle
you once had. We went out and made our
lucky find at a wrecking yard already, and
now we will show you the step-by-step
adjustments and modifications you too will
have to make so you can push a switch to
power up your windows also. Q

TECH PROJECT
1. General Motors front and rear window regulator assemblies with electric
motors. When you hunt down a front and rear set of electric window regulators, this is all you will need to switch over to power from your original manual
roll-up handle style. Your original manual front and rear track/guides inside
your door will be used along with these regulators as shown here. You will
first need to remove the manual door panel handle, and inside crank gear assembly inside the door as well.
2. When original power electric motors roll windows up and down throughout the years of an automobiles life span, window assemblies like the pin
rollers become worn out the most, and so do the motors. If you can replace the
rollers and test the original motors before you install your power setup, you

may have to rebuild or service them. You can also purchase aftermarket motors and other parts for the assembly from companies like Classic Industries.

3. Luis from House of Pain Customs presses down on the regulator rear arms
to set in place the new electric window motor so that the gear teeth line up
before bolting the motor to the bracket.

4-5. The electric motor is set in place and then bolted on.
6. Once the regulators are mounted into place on the rear quarter window
front and rear guide tracks, the rear window is put back into place to be
mounted with the special washer and bolts.

here are many technical paint

tips that we have shared with
all of you readers and painters
throughout the year, and a few of
them are really basic when it comes to
standard procedures and practices that
are involved in the spraying of paint,
and the maintenance of your spray
booth. This paint tip falls along those
same lines, but is just as important
as all of the other tips. For this New
Year tip we ask that you start off by
changing out with new filters and to
please change them regularly as well.
You have to make this a habit as well
as the stacks in your spray booth being
changed out every six months. Make
this your New Years resolution for 2015
and this will help in having the proper
airflow in your spray guns to help
prevent solvent pop in your paintjobs
final finish. Continue this practice
and you will have less problems
throughout the year. Thanks, Happy
New Years, and happy spraying from
the folks at Axalta Coating Systems.

7. The electric motors are bolted in to place on
your original doorframe skin as all GM models
have the factory power mounting holes already
in place whether the vehicle receives power or
manual door regulators.
8. The regulators are also mounted into place as
the rollers are first set into the track guides.
9. Powered up! The rear windows lock up into
place after they are adjusted.
10. Were on to the driver front door assembly
now, as the install will be repeated just like the
rear quarter windows.

11. Luis bolts down the motors and regulators,

and with a few line-up adjustments the door

window will become electric.

12. When you click or push your power window

switch and dont hear the motor spinning, it may
be the motors gear, regulator, and or roller failure.
But if you hear nothing at all and there are no
fuses blown, then you have a switch problem.
Though factory equipment is sometimes OK to
continue in its use, there are aftermarket switch
and wire harness assemblies out there as well.
As you can witness for yourself, Electric-Life
provides you with power window systems and
accessories that will reliably replace your original
equipment. Tack on electric windows as an
upgrade for this Super Sport.

MSD ATOMIC EFI LS COIL COVERS

M
Improved looks and spark energy for LS engines. When it comes to controlling the fuel injection and ignition
off an LS engine, the MSD Atomic EFI is the only way to go. Less wiring, more control, plus the easiest tuning
o
an
a
and
n calibration setup available. Now MSD can make your engine perform better and look as good as it runs with
our LS coils and Atomic LS coil covers. Their LS coils have been completely redesigned
from the internal circuitry to the plug terminal and are capable of delivering up to 30
percent more energy over their OEM counterparts. Also, thanks to advanced circuitry,
the MSC coils create a series of multiple sparks during cranking and low rpm operation. These multiple sparks help improve starting, idle, and throttle response. If you
desire a clean and customized look to your engine compartment, our new Atomic LS
coil covers are designed to fit over the valve covers and coil assemblies to effectively
hide the coil packs and wiring. The cast-aluminum covers align with the Atomic Smart
Fuel Rail assemblies and provide a completely smooth contoured finish to the edge of
the valve cover. The covers are available in MSD red, black, and in a bare cast finish to
modify to match your style. There are two covers available to cover the LS1/6 engine
as well as the LS2/3/7 platform. The Atomic Coil Covers will work with OEM coils as
well as MSDs Multiple Sparking Coils. For more informationon the new Atomic Coil
Covers and LS coils, go to www.msdperformance.com or call (915) 855-7123.
