Geographical position:
Croatia extends from the furthest
eastern edges of the Alps in the
north-west to the Pannonian low-
lands and the banks of the Danube in
the east; its central region is covered
by the Dinara mountain range, and
its southern parts extend to the coast
of the Adriatic Sea.
Surface: the mainland covers 56,542
km², and the surface of territorial
waters is 31,067 km².
Population:
4,437,460 inhabitants; composi-
tion of population: the majority of
the population are Croats; national
minorities are Serbs, Slovenes, Hun-
garians, Bosnians, Italians, Czechs
and others.
System of government:
Multi-party parliamentary republic.
Capital:
Zagreb (779,145 inhabitants), the
economic, traffic, cultural and aca-
demic centre of the country.
Coastline:
5,835 km of which 4,058 km com-
prise a coastline of islands, solitary
rocks and reefs.

1,185; the largest islands are Cres
and Krk; there are 50 inhabited
islands.

Climate:
There are two climate zones; a tem-
perate continental climate, locally
also a mountainous climate, prevails
in the interior, whereas a pleasant
Mediterranean climate prevails
along the Adriatic coast, with an
overwhelming number of sunny
days, dry and hot summers, mild and
humid winters; average tempera-
ture in the hinterland: January: 0 to
2°C; August: 19 to 23°C; average
temperature at the seaside: January:
6 to 11°C; August: 21 to 27 °C; the
temperature is about 12°C in winter,
and 25°C in summer.
Currency:
kuna (1 kuna = 100 lipa). Foreign
currency can be exchanged in banks,
exchange offices, post offices, travel
agencies, hotels, camps, marinas;
cheques can be cashed in banks.
Credit cards:
Hotels accept all major credit cards
(Eurocard/Mastercard, American
Express, Diners, Visa).
Most restaurants, shops and marinas
accept Eurocard/Mastercard, Ameri-
can Express, Diners, and Visa.
Accessing cash from ATMs is pos-
sible in almost all towns, cities and
tourist centres; almost all ATMs
accept Eurocard/Mastercard, Diners,
American Express, and Visa.

fication document recognised by
international agreement; for certain
countries a personal identity card
is sufficient (i.e. a document which

Review of the visa system.
Customs regulations:
Customs regulations of the Republic
of Croatia are harmonised with the
standards of E.U. member states,
but the value of objects of non-com-
mercial character for personal use al-
lowed to be brought into the country
without tax duty or PDV (VAT) is
limited to 300 HRK.
The permitted amount of meat and
milk products which can be brought
in without special veterinary inspec-
tion, as well as honey, is limited to
1 kg, while the amount of wine is
limited to 5 liters.
Foreign currency may be freely
taken in and out of the country; local
currency up to an amount of 15, 000
kuna, but any amount brought in our
taken out of the country (whether for-
eign currency or kuna) in an amount
exceeding a value of 40,000 HRK,
must be declared to the customs
officers.
More valuable professional and tech-
nical equipment must be declared
at the border. A non-resident can
freely bring in and take out cheques
in HRK.
Refund of tax when leaving the
country is made to foreign nationals
for individual goods purchased in
Croatia for amounts in excess of 500
Kuna, on presentation of a “Tax-
cheque” form. This form is provided
on request by a sales assistant, when
items are purchased.
Pets (dogs, cats and animals of the
marten family) which are either trav-
elling through the Republic of Croa-
tia in the company of their owners,
or which are staying in the country
on a temporary basis, must, prior to
entering the country, be fitted with a
microchip or be clearly and legibly
tattooed with a number prior to being
entered in the international certificate
issued in accordance with legislation
valid in the Republic of Croatia.
After the first vaccination against
rabies carried out at the age of three
months, animals must be vaccinated
at least six months and no more
than one year prior to undertak-
ing the journey, and in the case of
subsequent vaccinations (boosters)
the period between vaccination and
the journey undertaken shall not be
greater than one year.
No import into, or temporary
residence in, the Republic of Croatia
shall be permitted in the case of pos-
sibly dangerous dogs of the terrier
breed, which have not been entered
in the register of the International
Kennel Club (FCI) (pit bull terriers)
or their cross-breeds.

Health services
There are hospitals and clinics located
in all the larger towns and cities, while
smaller centres have dispensaries and
chemist’s.
Foreign visitors are not obliged to pay
for medical services if a convention
on Social Security has been signed
between Croatia and visitors’ country
of origin. Health care (including
transport) is used for emergency
cases in the manner and according to
regulations valid for Croatian citizens
covered by Social Security. Persons
coming from countries with which no
such convention has been signed bear
the costs of health services rendered
personally.
For patients in a life-threatening
situation, emergency air transport (he-
licopter) and sea transport is available
(speedboat).

Shops and public services working
hours
Most shops are open from 8 a.m.
until 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 2
or 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Some shops
work a split-shift system: from 8
a.m. to 12 p.m., and again from 4
p.m. to 8 p.m. Many shops stay open
until 10 p.m., even on Sundays,
especially in summer, while certain
shops in the larger cities are open for
business 24 hours a day.
Public services and business offices
work from 8 a.m. until
4 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.
Post and telecommunications
Post offices are open from 7 a.m. to
7 p.m. on weekdays, in smaller cen-
tres from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.; some
offices work a split shift. In most
towns and tourist centres, on-duty
post offices are open on Saturdays
and Sundays until 9 p.m.
Postage stamps may also be pur-
chased from newspaper and tobacco
kiosks
Phone cards are used in all public
telephones and may be purchased
from post offices and from newspa-
per and tobacco kiosks. International
calls may be made directly from

Fire prevention
Check that you have undertaken all
the necessary measures to prevent

inflammable objects into the environ-
ment!

Radio news in foreign languages
during the tourist season
Croatian Radio broadcasts on several
frequencies programmes in foreign
languages designed for tourists
in Croatia. A daily programme is
broadcast at 20.05h on channel one,
in English in a duration of up to 10
min. On channel two of Croatian Ra-
dio, along with regular news, HAK
provides reports on road conditions
in English, German and Italian and,
several times each day, information
for sailors.
In the summer season, channel two
of Croatian Radio (98.5 Mhz), also
broadcasts every hour on the hour,
news and reports on the condition
of the roads are broadcast directly
from the studios of: the Third Pro-
gramme of Bavarian Radio, the Third
Programme of Austrian Radio, RAI
Uno and British Virgin Radio, Radio
Prague and the International pro-
gramme of Croatian Radio – Voice
of Croatia. Once each day during the
summer reporters of Radio Prague
inform their compatriots via regional
radio stations: Radio Split, Radio
Dubrovnik and Radio Rijeka.

Basic obligations in case of traffic
accident
First inform the police about the
traffic accident (Tel: 92) in the event
of a traffic accident which results in
minor material damage such notifica-
tion is not obligatory. Secure the site
of the accident (set up a triangle) and
undertake measures for elimination
of fresh possible dangers. Wait for
the arrival of the police. In the event
of any damage to the vehicle, you
must obtain a police report on the
damage to the vehicle, without which
you cannot re-cross the state border.

How to avoid traffic jams
To avoid unnecessary prolongation of
your journey and becoming involved
in traffic jams, you are advised to:

SAILING IN THE REPUBLIC
OF CROATIA
The skipper of a vessel entering the
territorial waters of the Republic of
Croatia by sea is obliged to take the
shortest route to the nearest port open
to international traffic, in order to
perform border control formalities, to
obtain the relevant official vignette
(sticker) and for verification of crew
members at the Harbour Master’s
Office, or branch office.
The skipper of a vessel which is
brought into Croatia by road, or
which is moored in a port or in some
other approved location within the
Republic of Croatia, is obliged to
obtain the official vignette (sticker)
and to verify the list of crew mem-
bers, in the Harbour Master’s Office,
or a branch office, prior to setting
out to sea.
The official vignette (sticker) is not
obligatory for a vessel the length of
which is less than 2.5 metres, or with
a total driving power of less than 5
KW.
The official vignette (sticker) must
be displayed in a visible location on
the vessel, and its period of validity
is one year from the date of issue.
A vessel sailing into the Republic
of Croatia must carry the following

REGISTRATION OF PER-
SONS ABOARD A VESSEL
The list of crew and passengers
includes crew members and pas-
sengers who are on the vessel, and
is approved in the Harbour Master’s
Office or branch office. All vessels
entering Croatia by sea must main-
tain a list of crew and passengers.
If the skipper of a vessel does not
intend to change crew and/or pas-
sengers, he does not need to further
report to the Harbour Master’s Office
or branch office. In Croatia, the
skipper of a vessel can disembark his
crew and /or passengers with whom
he arrived from abroad, and take
on a new crew and/or passengers,
but in which case he is obliged to
disembark such persons outside the
Republic of Croatia, or to compile
a List of Persons. All changes in the
List of crew and passengers must
be reported to the Harbour Master’s
Office or its branch office, and which
must be approved by the same.
Vessels arriving to the Republic of
Croatia by land, or wintering here,
and which do not have the facilities
for extended stay of persons aboard
(i.e. vessels without berths) do not
need to maintain a List of crew
and passengers. Such vessels must
maintain only a Passenger List. The
skipper of a vessel arriving to Croatia
by sea is obliged to obtain such a List
from the Harbour Master’s Office,
or its branch office, in the event that
the same persons are being taken on
board and disembarked in Croatian

ports. The Passenger List can be
obtained immediately after obtaining
the official vignette (sticker), or later
on when new passengers are being
taken on board the vessel, but at the
latest before the vessel leaves the
port.
In the event that new names are
added to the Passenger List, such
List must be registered with the Har-
bour Master’s Office, or its branch
office, with each such change. The
Passenger List is to be approved by
vignette counterfoil.
The total number of persons listed in
the Passenger List cannot exceed the
double capacity of the unit capacity
of the vessel, multiplied by 30%.
The capacity of a vessel is de-
termined according to a vessel’s
documents. In the event that those
documents do not contain such data,
capacity is determined accord-
ing to the Book of Rules for Boats
and Yachts and the Book of Rules
regulating the statutory certification
of boats and yachts.
Children below the age of 12 need
not be entered into the Passenger List
and are not included in the number
of persons who can embark a given
vessel; the same applies to profes-
sional crew members.
Persons staying aboard a vessel
while it is in port or at anchorage are
not entered into the Passenger List.

Nautical tourism and marinas:
There are 50-plus marinas in Croatia
with around 15,000 berths in the sea

DRINK
Where to eat?
Apart from hotels offering ac-
commodation, both full board and
lodging or half board, in all towns
and tourist resorts, and along the
main roads, there are also restaurants,
inns, taverns, wine cellars, pizzerias,
fast-food restaurants. Gourmets will
find restaurants and inns where the
domestic “Croatian cuisine” is most
interesting.
All foods of animal origin are subject
to the same standards as in countries
in the European Union and are
under constant veterinary and health
supervision.
What to eat?
In addition to standard European
cuisine, Croatia offers its most popu-
lar domestic dishes and specialties:
among the cold dishes there are
the renowned Dalmatian or Istrian
prosciutto, Pag or Lika cheese, sheep
cheese, Slavonian paprika-fla-
voured salami (“kulen”), renowned
Samobor or Zagorje garlic sausages
(“češnjovka”), fresh cottage cheese
with smetana… Main dishes depend
on the area that you are visiting. In
Dalmatia, Primorje, on the islands
and in Istria, the dishes are mainly
fish and other seafood dishes, or meat
dishes such as the “pašticada”, or
stewed lamb.
In the continental part of Croatia
there is a wide selection of meat
dishes, including roast turkey with a
“mlinci” (pastry rolled out into small,
thinnish circles, baked on a hot plate,
allowed to cool, broken up and tossed
into salted boiling water to soften,
drained and placed next to the roast),
roast lamb, roast suckling pig, and
boiled or baked “štrukli” (thin rolled
pastry stuffed with a combination of
fresh cottage cheese and smetana)
being particularly famous. Among
desserts, apart from the already
mentioned “štrukli”, there are walnut
loaf, poppy seed loaf, and cheese or
fruit strudel.
What to drink?
Cultivation of grapes and the
production of smooth, choice is a
centuries-old tradition with Croatian
winegrowers both in the continental
part of Croatia and in Primorje (the
Littoral) and Dalmatia. Some of the
best known varieties of Croatian red
wines along the Adriatic coast and on
the islands are: Dingač, Teran, Mer-
lot, Cabernet, Opolo, Plavac, Postup;
of the white wines the following are
most appreciated: Pošip, Mal-
vazija, Pinot, Kujundžuša, Žlahtina,
Muškat… In continental parts one
can enjoy Riesling, Graševina,
Burgundac, Traminac… As far as
spirits go, there is a range of rakijas,
or rather brandies the best known
among which is undoubtedly slivo-
vitza or plum brandy, herb-flavoured
brandy, grape brandy, while among
dessert drinks there are Prošek and
Maraschino.
