AS part of the Reactivate Latrobe Valley project, The

Office of Urban Transformations Research (OUTR),
along with RMIT University and Latrobe City Council

Spring Sustainability Festival.
Building on the success of the recent Winter Night
Festival, this much talked about event will showcase some
of Latrobe Valleys creative individuals and businesses
including food, art, design and makers market stalls, as
well as food and live music.
There will be talks, workshops, art installations, guided
tours and markets showcasing locally produced art, design,
music, crafts and products.
The event is free and open to everyone.

While on a recent visit to Lakes Entrance
my family decided to have an outing on
the Stormbird.
Refreshments were available with a beer

for dad, a cup of tea for mum and soft
drinks and ice creams for the kids.
It was a lovely day and we boarded with

many other folks keen to see the Lakes.
It was a great afternoon watching the fishing

boats and enjoying the coastal scenery
We travelled down the lakes, past Kalimna

and on to Metung, then on to Paynesville,
where we saw Raymond Island.
My family highly recommends a day

out on the Stormbird as a fun and

Anglers firing on all cylinders at Lakes

ROSS our Fish Whisperer from Riviera Bait
Supplies in Lakes Entrance is astounded at how
well the Lakes are producing at the moment.
Anglers are killing it at Mill Point, Lakes
Entrance for flathead and bream on mop mullet
lures and prawns. Ross is selling thousands. Local
angler Tracey Wallace caught a 46cm, 1 kilo
bream much to the ongoing dismay of her fellow
angler and husband.
The spotted salmon at Reeves Chanel are almost
jumping into the boat. The Prawns are already
present in great quantiites even on a full moon,
which is unusual, with catches of 1 to 1.5 kilos.
The whiting and bream off the Metung Jetty are
also firing madly according to Ross.

big on live prawn and live sandworm.

are producing salmon and trevally on bluebait
and hard bodied lures. West of Kalimna Jetty
king george whiting have been caught in the
weed beds.
Lake Tyers: Large flathead have been taken
around Burnt Bridge and Solitude Bay using
soft plastics and peeled prawn. Bream are biting
at high tide between No 2 Jetty and the channel

markers. Trevally are active on the run out tide.

Mitchell River: Bream have been landed
from Grassy Banks to the Butter Factory and
backwater. Minnow lures and prawn are best bait.
Tambo River:The cliffs area has bream on the
chew using prawn, pippi and crab.
Nicholson: From Pear Tree to the Railway Bridge
bream are being caught on prawn and shrimp.
Metung: Shaving Point is still the best spot for
bream on prawn. A few king george whiting have
been taken on pippi.
Paynesville: Luderick are still around the
jetties with mullet and bream at the King Street
Bridge. Try sandworm, pippi and prawn.

Expo, to be held at the famous Phillip
Island Grand Prix circuit. Its for

So many city folk are embarking
on a sea-change or a tree-change, but
when they move into their country
home complete with their plot of
land, they are often at a loss managing
their property, says circuit managing
director, Fergus Cameron, who also
runs a farm.
Rural life is wonderful but it
possesses challenges, and we felt we
had the capacity and contacts to create
an expo that would really help people.
Many experts from our community
and local government authorities have
agreed to attend and will be sharing
their expertise with our patrons,
said Cameron who has recruited
the Bass Landcare Network to
speak on sustainable farming practices

and Alternative Growing Solutions to
provide agricultural advice.
The reaction to the inaugural expo

has been very positive with many
local companies and organisations
committed and exhibiting the latest
farm machinery, implements, power
equipment and cutting edge farm
technology. Internal and external sites
are still available and exhibitors should
contact the circuit for more details.
There will be a strong focus
on organic and sustainable living
products, with everything from worm
farms to solar lights being featured.
On the lifestyle side, there will
be exhibitors covering a range of
leisure pursuits from water sports,
and camping, to four wheel driving,
health and tourism.
As in all good rural communities,
local produce will also be celebrated.
The Expo will be open from 9am

5pm each day Saturday and Sunday
November 22 and 23, and will cost $10

With a stable of the top art and
craft exponents in Gippsland, the
gallery has proved an outstanding
success and has become a feature
of the Bass Coast arts scene.
A large measure of that success

is due to the very experienced and
hard working committee. Exhibitors
are asked to pay a nominal fee for
the display space their items require
whether it is wall space, glass
shelving or cases, or plinths.

Travel on board historic railway carriages on a winding journey through the rolling hills of the Strzelecki Ranges. Its a

Gigpig birthday bash

celebrates 500+ gigs
Gigpig, Gippslands free online
gig guide, will join rocking covers
bands Bubstone and Drunken Ninja
for a party to outdo all parties at the
Austral Hotel in Korumburra on
Saturday, November 29.
The event marks Gigpigs first
birthday, a milestone that also celebrates
more than 500 Gippsland gigs promoted
free through the site since Gigpig went
live, in November 2013.
Bubstone, a covers band that
plays kick-butt rock the likes of Foo
Fighters, Powderfinger and The Living
End, was the first band to list with
Gigpig and is pumped for the event.
Bubstone is supported by Drunken
Ninja, a pub band that covers music

from the 80s and 90s, but also some

earlier and more current numbers.
It promises to only play music you
can dance to and sing along with.
In other Gippsland music news, tickets
to Lyrebird Arts Councils annual festival
Summer of Soul are now on sale.

Park via Leongatha, will be held on
January 10 and features rock legend Paul
Kelly and the energetic and eclectic Cat
Empire, a Melbourne band that has taken
its unique sound around the world.
Summer of Soul is expected to
attract the punters in their thousands.

The History of the

White Wedding Gown
FOR the modern bride the wedding
gown is possibly the most important
element of her perfect wedding day.
Historically though, brides rarely

purchased a dress specifically for their
wedding day. European and American
brides had been wearing a plethora of
colours, including blue, yellow, and
practical colours such as black, brown
or grey prior to the tradition of the
white wedding gown gaining hold.
The tradition of a white wedding

is commonly credited to Queen
Victorias choice to wear a white
wedding dress when she married
Prince Albert in 1840.
Because of the limited laundering
techniques, white dresses provided
an opportunity for conspicuous
consumption: they presented an ideal
opportunity to showcase the brides
family as so wealthy and so firmly part
of the leisure class that the bride would
choose an elaborate dress that could be
ruined by any sort of work or spill.

By the end of the 19th century the
white dress was the choice for elite
brides, however, middle-class British,
American, and Australian brides didnt
adopt the trend fully until after World
War II. With increased prosperity in the
20th century, the tradition also grew to
include the practice of wearing
the dress once only.

5 ways to improve your

property negotiating skills
WHILST its true that the number
of properties on the market for sale
has increased substantially over
the last 12 months, competition to
secure those properties is stronger
than ever. Auction clearance rates
remain very high, with few left-over
bargains to be had. So how can you
hone your skills to yourself a better
chance of securing the property
youre after? Heres five great tips
to give you an edge when negotiating
your next property purchase.
Be sure of your position

Its always wise to negotiate
from a position of strength. So before
you make an offer or even start talking
to the real estate agent or vendor
about purchasing a property, do your
research to make sure it is not only
the right property for your needs and
objectives, but to find out what the
right purchase price will be, given
current market conditions.
To find out this most important
fact, research the recent sale prices of
comparable properties in the same suburb
and work out growth projections for the
suburb over the period of time you plan
to hold the property. You might even
want to go so far as to have the property
professionally valued (and if this is the
case, let us know as we can help).
In addition to finding out the right
price for the property you intend to
purchase, make sure that you are
financially situated to take advantage of
the deal quickly. To do this, talk to us

about getting your finance pre-approved
and line up your team of professionals
before you begin. Be ready for pest and
building inspections, do your valuation
and make sure you can include the
deposit cheque with your offer.
If you do your homework properly, it
will give you a solid position from which
to make an offer and negotiate the right
price. Even if youre forced to compete
in an auction for the property you want,
knowing your position and upper limit
beforehand will help you bid decisively
to come out on top at the end of the
auction process and remember, coming
out on top means securing the property at
the right price, not at all costs.
Assess the sellers situation

Finding a vendor who is willing
to negotiate on price isnt always easy.
They tend to set a price that satisfies
their personal objectives instead of
allowing the market to set the price.
Discovering as much about the vendor
as you can will help you decide if
attempting to negotiate the price you
want to pay for the property is worth
your time and effort. If you can find a
vendor who really needs to sell, then
you will have more bargaining power
and may get a better price. A good tip
is to try and find out how many other
offers have been made. Heres some
questions to ask that will help you
track down vendors that need to sell:
Why is the vendor selling?
Have they already purchased

another property?
How long has it been on the
market?
Has the property been passed
in at auction previously?
Dont be intimidated
Always have an upper price limit
in mind before you begin negotiations.
Your objective is to negotiate a price as
far below this limit as you can.
If you do your research properly, you

should be able to determine the right
price and enter into your negotiations
with full confidence. If you have your
finances in place, there is no reason
you should be intimidated by real estate
agents and vendors quoting higher prices
than you are prepared to pay. Use the
evidence you have gathered in your
research to persuade them that your offer
is likely to be the best theyll receive,
then sweeten the deal by meeting their
settlement terms. Show them you are
serious and they will react accordingly.
Control your emotions

Emotions play a big part in every
property transaction. They are also the
number one reason why people pay too
much for a property. Thats because
finding your dream home is never
easy. The more desperate you are to
secure a property, the higher the price
you will pay.
If you only choose one property to
pursue, it is more likely that you will
fixate on acquiring that property at all

costs and risk paying too much. This is
true for all types of property purchases,
whether you are buying to become an
owner occupier or an investor.
Have another property as a potential
back up, so that you can negotiate
objectively on the property you prefer.
You can use this back-up property to
give you more negotiating power if the
real estate agent seems unlikely to field
offers before the auction, or the vendor
seems set on an unrealistic price, you can
simply say to them I have a more viable
option to pursue the thought of losing
a potential purchaser will make them
more open to negotiations.
Be prepared to walk away
If you cant close the deal for the
price you want to pay, leave your offer
on the table then sit back and wait.
There is a good chance the vendor will
come back to you to negotiate further,
particularly if no other offers meet
their expectations.
Time can be a great negotiating tool,
so be patient and wait for the agent to
chase you. They may chase you to bring
you back to the negotiating table, or to
get you to attend the auction. Either
way, you may get a second chance at
securing the property but make sure
you hold firm on your price.
From an investors point of view,
missing out on a property is better than
paying too much. If youre shopping
for your dream home, however, it
might not be so easy to take this

attitude. Youll need to be realistic
about your budget and what you can
really afford to pay.
But dont worry. If you cant secure
your dream property for the right
price, then it just wasnt meant to
be. Keep doing your homework and
youll soon find the perfect property
for the perfect price.

About Malware
How does a virus or malware get onto your PC?
It can happen in a variety of ways. Most common ways are via

an attachment in your email, or a dodgy link in your emails
that leads you to a hacked site or even just visiting a regular
site that has malware injected into it and which downloads
to your PC without you knowing. Also downloading and
installing free software can easily install adware/malware
onto your PC without you knowing.
I have a antivirus installed and still got a virus,
how is that possible?
Sometimes there are 0 day exploits, meaning the malware/
exploit is already out in the wild before the antivirus
companies can come up with a removal solution for you to
update with. Also not updating your Anti Virus (AV) software
will leave you unprotected from new exploits so its always
important to keep your AV subscription up to date.
My friend says the computer will need to be
totally wiped to fix it, is that true?
In most cases the answer is no, you will not have to do
a complete wipe. However there are some nasty viruses

out there that can cause a lot of damage including deleting
important system files which will leave you with a unbootable
system, worse case scenario you would need a reinstall.
However if this is ever required it should still be possible
to retrieve your important files/documents before a reinstall.

A Week by Week Guide on what to grow and how
NOW that the weather is warming up the
variety of crops that can be sown or planted is
extensive. Even though we have had a number
of mild, sunny days it is not until the soil has
started to warm up that summer crops will
take off and thrive. A soil thermometer is a
good investment. You can test the temperature
of your soil and when it has reached 17C you
will be able to plant any summer crops.
When preparing the soil for planting work in some
blood and bone, old manure or a small amount of manure
pellets (like Dynamic Lifter) to build up the soil and
give the plants a start. Liquid manure or compost tea
is also an easy way to fertilise your garden. It is easy to
make and neednt cost you anything. How to make it and
use it is outlined in the breakout box below.
FURTHER NOTES

Water all seedlings in immediately after planting. This

settles the soil and removes air pockets that will dry the
tiny roots.
If you are planting staking tomatoes it is best to put the
stake in first then plant beside the stake to avoid damaging
the plant. Train the tomatoes leaving only three, or at the
most four, main shoots. Old stocking or jute string is ideal
to tie them. Cut all shots away from the base of the leaves
as they emerge. If you leave these shoots until they are
about 75mm/3 long they can be cut off carefully and put
into a small glass or jar of water. They will soon sprout
roots and can then be planted out like seedlings.
It is important to keep the soil moist but do not use
mulch yet as too much mulch will act as an insulator and
LIQUID MANURE
Sometimes called compost tea, liquid manure is very
easily prepared and is ideal source of nutrients to give
your plants a boost during the growing season. It can
also be applied very weakly to new seedlings.
Dilute the liquid to the strength of weak tea in a

watering can or bucket and use to water around
your plants. If you have made a strong brew use
more water, if the brew is weak, use less.
To make liquid manure you will need a container

such as a bucket, old garbage bin or drum, animal
manure, weeds, a mesh bag and some string. A
hessian sack, an old stocking or an old tea towel
would make suitable mesh bags.
Liquid manure can be used about every week or
Put a quantity of manure and/or weeds in your

bag or in the middle of a piece of cloth and
tie with the string to make a tea bag. Put the
bag into your container with the string hanging
over the side. Now add water to nearly fill the
container. A couple of times a day give your tea
bag a jiggle to help brew it. After a couple of
weeks you can start using your brew.
Caterpillars and grubs can be kept under control by

hand removal or by using a Bt spray such as Dipel.
This spray is actually a bacteria and stops the digestive
process in chewing pests. It is completely harmless to
birds and animals even if they eat the affected pest. There
are many other recipes for safe sprays. Do not resort
to chemical sprays.
Snails and slugs will be on the march. Snails can usually
be collected fairly easily by hand at might with the aid of
a torch. They can also be controlled with Multiguard
snail bait. Multiguard is made from iron sulphate and is
harmless to birds, animals & pets.
Sweet corn likes plenty of manure and water. It does
not like root disturbance and is far better if grown from
seed in the place where you wish to grow it. As it is wind
pollinated it is better planted in a block rather than single
rows. Once it is established consider planting climbing
beans so that they can grow up the stalks. The corn will
provide free stakes for

the beans and will help
shade the bean flowers
in the hotter weather.
Plant some daisy flowers

amongst and around your vegie patch. These include
calendulas, marigolds gazanias, zinnias, etc. These will
add colour but more importantly provide a food supply
for adult predators of pests. These goodies need a food
supply and their larvae are voracious consumers of aphis
and other caterpillars. A ladybird larva can consume 60
aphids in a day! Minute wasps lay they eggs in aphids
and caterpillars and the pests are eaten inside out!

Sow seed of Brussels sprouts for December/

January transplanting
Continue to sow bush beans every 10-14 days.
Small sowings regularly will give you a continuous
supply for a long time.
Plant out tomato seedlings
Sow sweet corn (sow in blocks rather than rows
to ensure pollination and better cobs.

Howdy Folks!
Happy High Spring to yall! Arent the trees wonderful with their lush new growth? Actually,
this month weve had quite a few of you asking about your trees. It seems they are growing
well but the once sun-drained garden is now in dappled light or shade. Are there any shade
lovers aside from azaleas or Rhodys? Too right there are! Lets chat about a few:
Heucheras: I think there are over 50 species of these little jewels, with crimson, white, or
pink flowers. The foliage can vary from green to dappled to purple and more. One variety,
Midnight Rose has purple leaves with tiny pink spots that enlarge through the season.
Epimediums: this genus includes some 40 species and is quite tolerant of dry shade once
established. The leaves are heart shaped with sprays of dainty flowers. They seldom reach
more than 60cm in height. E.rubrum has dark pinky-red and white flowers. The beautiful
leaves are both edged and marbled in red. E.Mottled Madness is just that- heavily mottled
in copper and maroon, with precious white flowers. E.Okudas white begins spring with
lovely coppery plum foliage turning to a soft green with warmer weather. Delightful pure
white flowers adorn the plant from mid spring through autumn.
Thalictrum: with over 300 species of Meadow-Rue for sun and shade there will surely be
several to please the most discerning gardener. The leaves are reminiscent of Maiden fair
ferns or Grannys Bonnets. Their conspicuous stamens look ever so delicate rising above the
plant. One of my favourites today is T.aquilegifolium album. From its basal clump, pristine
white flowers reach to 1.4 metres.
Corydalis: with over 300 species, it is high impossible to choose even one. They have
striking ferny foliage with flowers in pink, yellow, cream, purple and sometimes clear blue.
C. flexuosa is one of these. It is absolutely stunning. Its brother C.omeiensis has darker blue
flowers and is perhaps hardier than C.flexuosa
So there you go, just a few plants for under those trees, but there are heaps more! Go see
your local nursery person for lots and lots of ideas. Enjoy this marvellous spring!
