PREFACE
Dear Friends,
The Students Union (SU) of the University of Mauritius is the representative body of all
registered students on campus at different levels on the non-academic and academic committees
through which the opinions of the students reaches the different committees for consideration.
The Students Union members are elected duly by the students of the UOM community and
would operate under the Registrar of the University of Mauritius for a mandate of one year. This
Bilan publishes and reports all the achievements of the Students Union elected for the academic
year 2013 2014 and summaries the involvement of the students in various activities conducted by
the SU.
The SU have as well sponsored different constructive project idea - initiated from its own
committee(s) and students with the aim for providing a better environment to the student
community. During our mandate, the SU has oriented itself towards another field of attention
concerns on Health and Safety of students on campus as compared to the previous mandates of SU
and though it is not under the constitution of the SU, Students representatives come forth with
implementation of different projects to raise awareness.
As President of the Students Union 2013-14 we have been able to coordinate and initiate
multiple projects on health and safety concerns and raising awareness on different aspects on and
after the students life on campus. The SU is a learning body and will be ever evolving and adapting
to need, opinions and feedback of the students of the University of Mauritius.
This Bilan would serve as a medium to inform its fellow community of the developments
by the elected body. On behalf of the Students Union, we would like to thanks all the students and
administration for their participation and contribution to the various activities and different
projects.
We are confident that the SU will always continue to develop and adapt to the new
challenges arising in the near future, and will always work for the betterment of the students.

INTRODUCTION
The Students Union
The Students Union is the official organisation of students of the University, run for students by the
students under its own constitution established which governs the day to day business of the body
and administrative procedures, and is the centre of students non-academic activities on campus.
The Executive Committee of the Students Union is made up of four office-bears duly elected from
among the students of the community and one elected representative from each of the five faculties
on campus. The Union is empowered to recognise and finance students societies dealing with
recreational activities as well as those that deal with academic subjects and those that cover topics
of concern to the students. It has its own web page through which it communicates with the
student.
Aims of the Students Union
1. Act as the representative body in all matters concerning the students, and
2. To promote and provide for the welfare and the social, cultural and educational activities for
all registered students.
Objectives of the Students Union
The Students Union would have a close relationship with the University and seek wherever possible,
to get involve in decision making process by the University Students involvement is achieved at a
number of levels such are at difference committees and representation.
The Students Union would as well encourage students to participate into activities and to join its
various affiliated clubs and societies. The SU would ensure that student community is aware and up
to date with the activities conducted on campus for equality of participation.

UOM Students Transport Problem Survey and Response
Please kindly forward to the Vice Chancellor for attention and actions.
Further to my email dated 30th January, 2014, the Students Union has conducted a series of
survey pertaining to problems students are encountering regarding travelling to campus and
back to their residence place. This survey was conducted among those students whose
problems needs immediate attention and generalised for all students.
The survey was conducted using the UMAIL Forms option, where each student was to signin using his or her umail login to be able to fill in the form as an authentication entry from
UOM Students.
We have made a summary of the all data collected into the following project file. We hope
that the UOM Management will take appropriate actions for security and proper transport
facility for UOM Students.

Students Transport Problem -Report

Introduction
The initial purpose of this report is to introduce a channel of communication for students to
report to the Students Union, and consequently to the Management, of their routine or caseto-case problems and issues pertaining to traveling or public transport. The Students Union
came up with this initiative with the purpose of creating a database from which a proper
planning for bus scheduling could be drawn and forward to the National Transport
Authority for taking actions and amendments to their bus route schedules to match the
student flux and make provision for adequate number of buses available onto the respective
route.
The SU is presenting this in regard to the survey conducted where we have collected the
information about the time of arrival and departure of students from campus and
summarised all into a table whereby we mentioned the route where we shall need to
consider.
SU Survey 2014
An online questionnaire was prepared by the SU and it was forwarded to all students via the
umail, where students were allowed to login and record their details about their time of
arrival on campus and time of departure. This information helped in creating a table where
we could determine the peak hours per day when students travel by bus, and not only their
bus routes.
This survey was conducted during the month of January and August 2014, and we tried to
reach part timers as well for report.
The following tables summarises the information we collected.

only those concerned with major issues The main reasons are, insufficient number of
buses on these routes at the peak hours.

Problems faced by students:

1. Buses do not stop at the stand to pick students or sometime they do not even come
to bus stand and would rather transit directly to Rose Hill or Ebene.
2. Early morning classes buses mentioned in table 2 are overcrowded in the
morning as most of the conductors will continue to pick those going to work rather
than students as students would not be paying in bus.
3. Part time students made several requests to have buses at later than the current
schedule. Currently, as per the document we procured from the NTA (the bus
schedule) most of the buses will stop operating or decrease in frequency, which
penalise students in waiting longer period before catching another bus for the same
route or the students will have to leave class earlier catch same. Thus, these
students do lost part of their lecture, or the lecturers are ending classes earlier.
4. UOM does not have schooling bus system that picks only students and goes
quicker than normal buses. Students from far north or south have problems of
taking two or more buses to reach campus, and it is inconvenient for 1hr30 to 2hr
to travel to be early in class.
5. Another problem related to students using transit route, for example, a student
need to reach the northern bus station at Port Louis to catch the bus for Poudre
Dor. If the last bus to Port Louis is late or do not pick the student from Reduit, he
or she will miss the transit bus to the northern bus station and thus miss the last
bus to Poudre Dor. In these cases, most of the students prefer to abandon classes
very early.
6. Students complaint about no adequate number of buses during the peak hours.
According to our survey we have been able to sort out the peak hours for students
arrival on campus and departure from campus.
7. Students normally uses their NTA Bus pass to travel to and fro from the residence
to the UOM Campus - however many cases arises, especially during weekend,
where the frequency of the bus on specific routes are less than on weekdays, and
thus students would obviously take a diverted route to reach their residence at
earliest instead of waiting for its route bus. Similar cases for students where they
do not have the direct route to Reduit from the resident place.
For example, on weekend (Saturdays afternoon) buses on route 198 and 200 are
much less frequent than usual weekdays, and thus students would either take a
detour to reach the bus terminal at Curepipe and therefore either Mahebourg route
or L'Escalier route for reach their destination. Or, students catch the route 200 bus
to later shift to 198 bus from Port Louis or Mahebourg buses from Curepipe.

Peak hours
After we have compiled the information recorded from the survey, we are able to draw a
table where the peak hours per day can be clear identified. Please refer to the appendix to
have detail usage of the bus route over 6 days a week. The chart below shows summary of
the average of the time period when students travel the most on a daily comparison.
The Chart (Figure 1) is plotted to show the relative flux of student using the bus public
transport to come on campus and to left for home.
From the chart we can conclude that the average peak time period that students make use of
the transport is between 8h00 to 9h30 in the morning and from 16h00 to 17h30 in the
afternoon. We have a bus park available next to the football ground, however, not all bus
route are available there for student to return home.
Students complained about the following buses not available on the bus park during the
afternoon on the peak hours.

SU Recommendations
We thus request that additional bus are made available on the Bus stand (refer to table 1 the
list of bus route) after 19h00 such that part time students does not have to worry about
traveling. Please refer to table 3, the last bus for the high demand route are around 18h00 to
18h30 or often the buses would not pass through the Reduit bus terminal since it is already
full from the bus station.
Additionally, since the part time students are ending at 20h00, we could have specific buses
(please refer to table 4) standby on the bus stand at 20h00 which would leave at 20h15 and
reach specific destination with half to an hour or so. Students would then be comfortable for
attending his/her classes without worrying to rush for bus at earlier hours.

Configure UOM SMS Notification

The SU introduced this system to bridge the communication gap between lecturers and students
for short notice updates of events, such as cancellation of classes. The intended system was
launched in 2013 however the Google App platform was not compatible with the upgrade by
ICTA of mobile numbers from 7 to 8-digits.
Register your mobile phone

To register your mobile phone with Google Calendar, you need to obtain a
verification code. Here's how:
1. Click the titles Icons at the top of UMAIL Inbox page and select Calendar from the
drop-down menu.

Update your mobile phone number

If you've recently updated your cell phone number, you can change the number that
your SMS notifications are sent to by following these steps:
1. Click the gear icon at the top of any Google Calendar page and select Calendar
settings.

phone number.
4. Select your new carrier from the drop-down menu, if applicable.
