Introduction

The

NaturalMagazine
Way

Mary-Ann Shearer

Finally, a magazine that speaks out on health issues, with honesty, integrity
and depth. I have longed to be able to page through a magazine that inspires,
educates and stops you in your tracks without being sensational or dramatic.

believe we have achieved that in The

Natural Way Magazine. I would like to thank
all the staff and contributors from the depth
of my heart! I am deeply honoured to be
involved with all of you.
In this first issue, we focus on cancer
because all of our lives have been touched by
it in some way. It is a word we fear as lives are
shattered emotionally and financially as a
result of its devastation.
When I first published the original Natural
Way book in 1991, 1 in 67 people in South
Africa and most developed countries were
diagnosed with it. Now, in 2013, that rate has
shot up to 1 in 23! No other disease has
increased at this rate in such a short time.
The traditional approach of treating cancer
is not working; yes, some people recover in
the short term, but in the long term, it often
returns with a vengeance.
A huge industry has arisen in the medical
field fund-raising, marketing, sale of
ribbons, sports events, supplements, and in
natural therapies, treatments, centres and
books, yet the incidence of cancer keeps
increasing.
We have seen countless people who have
changed their entire lifestyle, recover fully and
stay well for over 20 years. There is hope and
there is a solution and it should not cost you
your inheritance, your pension or your house!
Getting well, staying well and preventing
cancer all require the same approach a high
raw, plant-based, whole-food diet, with fresh
air, natural light and natural exercise. It also
includes mental, emotional and spiritual
well-being.

In this first issue we have the very best

contributors in their fields from the renowned
Professor Colin Campbell from the State of
New York (Professor Emeritus Cornell
University Nutritional Biochemistry), to Dr
Joel Fuhrman, Dr Neal Barnard of the
Physicians Committee for responsible
medicine in Washington and Dr Pam Popper
from the Wellness Forum all inspiring,
educating and helping us to understand that
health comes from healthy living, not
expensive and debilitating treatments and
cures. This is great news, as anyone can afford
to be well and you dont need a nutritional
degree or a trust fund to do so.

We have book and film reviews that will

help you too and then on the lighter side we
have contributor Lesley Klem writing from
Australia on life in the family lane;
Dr Mark Stonestreet, psychologist from
Johannesburg on relationships; a sports-mad
health seeker Il Bufalo writing from Iran on the
politics of exercise and clothing in a different
culture; and Sean from Living Seeds the
heritage seed company in Henley-on-Klip
telling us how to start an organic veggie
garden. There are great recipes to keep you
healthy, that even the least discerning palate
will love.
In short, we believe we will inspire, educate
and motivate you to get healthy and stay
healthy. The Natural Way Magazine will give
you the tools to take responsibility for your
health and change the world we live in.
To health!

Omega-3 fish oil supplements linked to prostate cancer

July 2013

startling study shows men who have the

highest levels of these compounds the
kinds found in fish but not in vegetable
sources have a higher risk of prostate cancer.
Men with the very highest levels had a 71 per
cent higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer
the kind most likely to spread and kill, they
report in the Journal of the National Cancer
Institute.
These fish oil supplements in which some
men getting mega, mega doses in our
opinion that is probably a little bit dangerous,
said Theodore Brasky of Ohio State University
Medical Center, who worked on the study
with a team from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center in Seattle.
The same team published a study in 2011
that showed men with the highest levels of
one omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid, DHA for short, had double the
risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Other
studies have had similar findings.
To try to confirm their work, the team
looked at data from a different prostate
cancer trial called SELECT, for Selenium and
Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial. That study
showed 17 more cases of prostate cancer
among men who took vitamin E alone for
about five years compared to men taking
placebos.
The effect was even stronger when they
looked at omega-3 fatty acids specifically,
the kinds found in fish oil as compared to
those found in vegetable oils.
Braskys team looked at 834 of the men in
the SELECT trial who developed prostate
cancer, and 1 393 randomly chosen others
from the trial who didnt have cancer. They
divided the men into four groups based on
their blood levels of three omega-3 fatty acids
EPA, DPA and DHA.
Those with the highest blood levels had a
71 per cent higher risk of high-grade prostate
cancer, compared to those with the lowest
levels. Overall, their risk of any kind of prostate
cancer was 44 per cent higher.
The difference between the group with the
highest levels of omega-3s in their blood and
those with the lowest works out to about
what someone would get by eating salmon
twice a week, the researchers said.
Fatty acids found in vegetable oils, flaxseeds
and other vegetable sources including
alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) did not affect
prostate cancer risk, the researchers found.
A 70 per cent increased risk in high-grade
prostate cancer, given its the No. 1 cancer in
men and fish is a commonly consumed thing
and is thought to be a healthy food, I think itd
be a concern for people, Brasky said in a
telephone interview.
The American Cancer Society projects that
240 000 US men will be diagnosed with
prostate cancer in 2013, and about 30 000 will
die from it.

Men might be at a loss for what to do, as

omega-3 fatty acids were also believed to
lower the risk of heart disease, which is far
more common than prostate cancer. The
American Heart Association recommends
that people with heart disease eat fish twice
a week and people with heart disease might
need fish oil capsules.
But the researchers point out that recent
studies have shown taking extra omega-3 has
little effect on heart disease including a
study published in the New England Journal
of Medicine in May 2013.

Giovannucci E, Rimm EB, Colditz GA, Stampfer MJ, Ascherio A,

Chute CC, Willett WC. A prospective study of dietary fat and risk
of prostate cancer. 1993.
Abstract
Background:
The strong correlation between national consumption of fat and national rate of mortality
from prostate cancer has raised the hypothesis that dietary fat increases the risk of this
malignancy.
Conclusion:
The results support the hypothesis that animal fat, especially fat from red meat, is associated
with an elevated risk of advanced prostate cancer. Implications: These findings support
recommendations to lower intake of meat to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. The
potential roles of carcinogens formed in cooking animal fat and of a-linolenic acid in the
progression of prostate cancer need to be explored. [J Natl Cancer Inst 85: 15711579, 1993]

Nutritional and socioeconomic factors in relation to prostate

cancer mortality: a cross-national study. 1998.
Conclusions:
The specific food-related results from this study are consistent with previous information
and support the current dietary guidelines and hypothesis that grains, cereals, and nuts are
protective against prostate cancer. The findings also provide a rationale for future study of
soy products in prostate cancer prevention trials.

Consumption of olive oil and specific food groups in relation to

breast cancer risk in Greece. 1994.
Conclusions:
Although major categories of macronutrients do not show significant associations with
breast cancer risk in most studies, including the present one, vegetables and fruits are
inversely, significantly, and strongly associated with this risk. There also is evidence that olive
oil consumption may reduce the risk of breast cancer, whereas margarine intake appears
to be associated with an elevated risk for the disease. [J Natl Cancer Inst 87:110-116, 1995]

Eating fish is known to help

protect against heart disease,
and the Heart Association
recommends it at least twice a
week.
Commenting on the article, Alice
lichtenstein, director of the
cardiovascular nutrition lab at
Tufts University in Boston, said:
People who choose to eat more
fish are more likely to eat heart
healthier diets and engage in
more physical activity, and
studies testing the benefit of
supplements may not be able to
completely adjust for differences
like these, said.
The results do show that people
can't rely on a pill to make up for
a bad diet, she said.
It is sort of like breaking a fish oil
capsule over a hot fudge sundae
and expecting the effect of the
calories and saturated fat to go
away, she said.

Baby boomers, fast food

and dementia
4 April 2013
Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine, Dr Bernards Blog, www.pcrm.org

ast food is causing the dementia boom

and it is projected to get worse. Almost 3.8
million people 71 years or older have dementia, according to a study published today in
the New England Journal of Medicine. The
rise in Alzheimers is partly due to the aging
of baby boomers. But there is another reason.
When these senior citizens were teeny
boppers, the fast-food craze was just taking
off: The first KFC franchise opened in 1952, the
first Burger King in 1954, and the first
McDonalds and Dunkins Donuts in 1955. As
these foods caught on, Americas meat and
cheese intake soared. Todays dementia boom
can be attributed to the saturated fats and
trans fats that began inundating the
American diet with the rise of fast food.
Saturated fats in Big Macs, fried chicken,
and other meat and dairy products appear
to encourage the production of beta-amyloid
plaques within the brain. The Chicago Health
and Aging Study reported in the Archives of
Neurology in 2003 that people consuming
the most saturated fat had more than triple
the risk of developing Alzheimers disease,
compared with people who generally
avoided these foods.

Trans fats, found in doughnuts, snack pastries

and often in french fries, have been shown to
increase Alzheimers risk more than five-fold.
These bad fats raise cholesterol levels and
apparently increase production of the betaamyloid protein that collects in plaques in the
brain as Alzheimers disease begins.
Theres no sign that fast-food restaurants will
stop slash-and-burn growth tactics. Today,
McDonalds has more than 34000 restaurants
in 119 countries. While McDonalds and other
fast-food corporations make billions, they leave
Americans paying a huge health toll. The total
cost of dementia in 2010 was $215 billion.

By 2040, 9.1 million people in America alone

will suffer from dementia and it will cost the
country $511 billion.
Now that generations have been raised on
Whoppers and glazed donuts, what can we
do? Put down the fast food, as well as other
sources of meaty, cheesy, fat-laden fare.
People who generally avoid saturated and
trans fats skipping the cheese, bacon and
doughnuts have had remarkably low rates
of Alzheimers disease in research studies.
Alzheimers is incurable. But theres time for
the Millennial Generation and even Baby
Boomers to halt it before it starts.

Focus on Cancer

Mary-Ann Shearer
Mary-Ann is the best-selling author of The Natural Way
series of books and co-owner of The Natural Way Network.
She has spent the last 30 years researching and living healthy living. The results no doctors bills due to ill health for nearly
30 years for herself and her family.

Cancer is a state of cellular growth, which occurs when normal cells become abnormal and continue to grow abnormally
without apparent control, and in the process destroy healthy tissue and organs. Cancer kills more people in developed
countries than in developing countries. The latest stats are one in two males and one in three females will get cancer. Cancer
appears to have overtaken all other diseases, other than heart disease, although they appear to now be at the same level.
Cancer is a disease of so-called civilised nations, and is practically unknown among primitive people eating natural,
unprocessed foods.

oss Horne in his book, Health Revolution,

published in 1985, states that cancer does
not occur in properly nourished and vigorously healthy humans.
Dr EH Tipper in The Cradle of the World and
Cancer, A Disease of Civilisation (1927), said
that where there is no constipation, there is
no cancer. He further says: Cancer has been
suspected of being a disease of civilisation ...
I am convinced that this is true. Interestingly
enough, today, the most common form of
cancer in developed countries is cancer of the
bowel, including colon and rectal cancer. All
the latest research indicates that a diet high
in fat and protein and low in natural fresh
foods is the main cause of cancer. The most
comprehensive nutritional research ever
done to date shows clearly that cancer is
triggered when animal protein intake exceeds
5% of daily energy intake. Surprisingly, even
when exposed to highly carcinogenic
substances like aflatoxins, cancer does not
occur unless the protein intake exceeds that
5% level.
The third national cancer survey done by
the USA National Cancer Institute (1993
1995) showed that cancer of all types is lower
among people who follow a plant-based
(vegetarian) diet, and even lower among
those that do not consume dairy products.
A study done into Loma Linda University in
the USA, involving 100 000 Seventh Day
Adventists, showed that they had half the
cancer rate of the national average, and their
blood pressure and cholesterol levels were also
considerably lower (their general diet
discourages the consumption of animal fat,
stimulants and processed food). Recently they
formed part of the Blue Zone study shown on
Oprah and Dr Oz which listed the worlds
longest living communities. Loma Linda was
the area in developed countries with the
healthiest and longest living community.

Some general factors

contributing to cancer
Constipation
The average transit time for faecal matter in
developed countries is three days, while in rural
communities it is 24 hours where cancer is
virtually unknown.

High protein diet

Eating animal protein results in the formation
of ammonia, which encourages the formation
of cancer (carcinogenic).
Cooked and heated fats are also carcinogenic. When animal products are cooked, fats
in the protein foods are heated to very high
temperatures.
Animal protein contains no fibre and so
contributes in a major way to constipation. A
high protein diet (more than 600 g of animal
protein a week or more than 5% of energy
intake) causes thyroid problems and this can
result in severe constipation. This high-intake
protein is THE factor that appears to TRIGGER
cancer cell growth.
So even on a wholefood diet, with no
preservatives, colours or flavours and refined
foods, if your animal protein, including organic
cheese and dairy intake, is higher than 5% of
your energy intake, cancer will be triggered.
In the research conducted by Colin Campbell,
cancer cell growth stopped completely when
they took the protein intake to below 5% even
while the highly carcinogenic aflatoxins were
still in the diet. When they increased the animal
protein to above 5% cancer cell growth started
again, clearly showing what appears to not only
be THE CAUSE BUT ALSO THE CURE OF
CANCER.
Amazingly enough billions are spent worldwide continuing to search for a cure for cancer
when it has been found. Obviously there is no
money to be made from the real cure.

Three stages of cancer

Cancer progresses in three stages:
Initiation plant the seed carcinogens
Promotion water the seed high
animal protein and processed foods
Progress watch it grow diagnosis
Basically what happens is that a toxic or
carcinogenic substance comes into the diet,
lets say like aflatoxin, heated fats, nickel from
pots or nitrates, etc. In the cell these
carcinogens are metabolised by an enzyme
in the cell to form a product more reactive
and dangerous that attacks the DNA in the
cell.
The cell can repair this damage if it has the
right tools. If not, these damaged cells
reproduce and cancer forms.
Decreasing animal protein from 20% to 5%
decreases the enzyme activity dramatically.
That means that the dangerous metabolites
that damage DNA are reduced dramatically,
even when there are still carcinogenic
substances around.
It appears that antioxidants are able to
destroy cancer cells by increasing the white
blood cells in the body
Get the carcinogenic substances out the
diet, lower the animal protein intake or
remove it completely, and increase the intake
of raw fruit and vegetables.

Processed and refined

sugars and starches
Regular intakes of these foods have been
shown to result in a higher level of stomach
cancer.

If your a nimal protein is

higher tha n 5% of your en erg y
intake, ca ncer will be triggered

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

Processed foods and additives

Processed meats, such as polony, hot dog
and other sausages and bacon, contain
nitrites and nitrates, known to cause cancer.
Many other food additives and preservatives
such as sodium benzoate found in all
margarines are known to be carcinogenic.
Dr Colin Campbell (Professor Emeritus from
Cornell University) headed the China Study,
which eventually took over 30 years to
complete and included over 1 million
people. The study involved tracking the
diets of thousands of rural Chinese in 65
villages over a 10-year period. Oxford and
Cornell Universities were involved together
with the Chinese Academy of Preventative
Medicine in this study. Dr Campbell published
the findings in the epic, The China Study.
The book was first published in 2005 and
shows that additives are usually triggered by
over 5% of animal protein and insufficient
plant food in the diet.

Salt
A powerful irritant and strong inhibitor of
enzymes, salt has been observed to increase
the rate of cancer growth.

Insufficient antioxidants
You do not need to be taking any supplements,
as even fruit and vegetables grown in
so-called depleted soils contain enough of
these nutrients you just need to make sure
youre eating enough.
Remember that the country in which
people take the most supplements, the
USA, has the highest rates of cancer, heart
disease and diabetes, so clearly supplements do not help. We should be eating at
least five to 11 portions of fresh fruit and
vegetables daily. Antioxidants are highest in
fresh plant food, and they destroy free
radicals from processed, refined, fried and
high protein diets.
Remember that there are dozens, if not
hundreds of unknown phytonutrients that
have still to be discovered; also that fresh
fruit and vegetables are always alkalineforming in the body and it is this alkalinity
that also contributes to protecting the body
against cancer cell growth.

Heated fats
Fats heated above 160 C have been shown
to be highly carcinogenic, whereas natural
plant fats actually help strengthen the
immune system and should be eaten regularly.

Hormone replacement therapy

and the contraceptive pill
A huge study done on a million women,
completed in the late 1990s showed that
women on HRT stood a 50% greater chance
of suffering from breast cancer. The contraceptive pill also appears to contribute to this
type of cancer.

Exposure to animal and

environmental hormones
It is not certain whether it is just animal
protein or our exposure to animal hormones
in the animal protein that is dangerous. But
with each mouthful of animal protein we eat,
we are exposed to the animals own
hormones and, in non-organic production of
meat, we are exposed to over 11 different
hormones used to promote growth in the
animals.

Smoking
Inhaled cigarette smoke contains many
powerful carcinogens such as acrolein,
carbon monoxide, nicotine, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, nitrous oxide, formaldehyde,
methanol, arsenic, among others.

An acid-forming diet
A diet that is predominantly acid-forming
puts tremendous strain on the immune
system. The ideal pH of the body is 7.357.45;
when the pH drops just marginally below this,
cancer cells multiply rapidly. A typical diet in
the developed world is anything from
70100% acid-forming, when it should be no
more than 2025% acid-forming to maintain
this pH balance to prevent this positive
environment for cancer.

The focus should be on as much

orga nically grown fruit a nd
vegetables as possible a nd a
glass of freshly extracted
vegeta ble juice containing
orga nic barley juice

The best way to avoid cancer is to remove

all processed foods from the diet. A diet low
in animal fat and animal protein and high in
fruit and vegetables has been proved time
and time again to be the best way to avoid
cancer. Jennifer Meek (an immunologist and
nutritionist) in her book Immune Power
(1990) indicates that the quickest way to
increase your natural immune response is to
increase your intake of raw fruit and
vegetables. Drs Chandra & Chowdry in 1987
found the same results. Dr T Colin Campbell
found much the same in his studies
published in The China Study. If a person has
cancer, I have found that a 100% raw diet,
including nuts and seeds, to be the best
programme for recovery. It is a high alkalineforming diet (90100%) and is also high in
natural antioxidants such as vitamin C, betacarotene, etc. The high alkalinity helps
prevent the cancer cells multiplying and the
high antioxidant levels help the body destroy
the cancer cells without harming the healthy
cells. I have personally dealt with numerous
people over the years who have recovered
completely (first remission for five years and
now classed as cured) from so-called
incurable forms of cancer such as liver cancer.

Focus on Cancer

The focus should be on as much organically

grown fruit and vegetables as possible and a
glass of freshly extracted vegetable juice
containing organic barley juice if possible (the
most alkaline food available and which also
contains powerful antioxidants such as
superoxide dismutase), organic carrot juice and
organic beetroot juice.
Organic flax oil is also anti-carcinogenic and
anti-tumourgenic and taken daily would be of
much benefit. Taking other vitamin and mineral
supplements will simply strain the digestive
tract and kidneys adding to the existing burden
of cancer.

Inflammation
Barts and the London School of Medicine and
Dentistry, September 2012:
Dr Toby Lawrence trained with Michael Karin
in San Diego, where he used molecular
genetics to study the role of cell signalling
pathways in the regulation of inflammation and
immunity. These studies focused on the role of
IkappaB kinase (IKK) in the biology of
inflammation, using tissue-specific gene
targeting to establish the specific role of IKK in
the inflammatory response. The major research
focus of the group was to understand the
fundamental mechanisms by which inflammation promotes cancer, with particular reference
to the role of stromal and inflammatory cells in
carcinogenesis.
This research indicates that inflammation
plays a big role in cancer formation. The China
Study showed that cancer is promoted by
animal protein and all animal protein contains
arachidonic acid, a fatty acid that promotes
inflammation. It is not surprising then that high
protein diets promote cancer.

Cooking pots
Non-stick and aluminium cookware are known
to give off the most toxic of all chemicals, but
what is not known is that stainless steel, glass,
enamel and cast-iron cookware can be equally
toxic to the body. Stainless steel gives off nickel
and chrome when food is cooked, glass and
enamel lead, cadmium and boron. Stainless
steel needs to be 316 and combined with
titanium to be completely non-reactive. It is
considered to be the only safe cookware.
Microwaves also produce carcinogenic
compounds in foods, and 95% of nutrients are
destroyed in microwaved foods. Waterless,
fat-free cooking is ideal or else live on raw
food.
For a more detailed review of cooking pots,
please refer to the article in this magazine, The
natural kitchen.

Fasting
I personally see no sound reason to fast a
person who has cancer, as the body is so run
down that it cannot cope with the fast. I have
seen many people deteriorate rapidly when
fasting for cancer. Although for other diseases
such as heart disease fasting can be very

Focus on Cancer

beneficial, I recommend one to three days and

no more for those with cancer. It is best though
to first build up your body with natural whole
foods and a high fresh fruit-and-vegetable diet
with no animal protein and only when health
has been restored can longer fasts be taken.

Mental attitude
The mental attitude of a person with any
disease and how it affects the health and
recovery rate of that person is well known
and
described
as
psycho-neuroimmunology or PNI. How you feel about
your disease for example directly affects the
function of the thymus gland, which

10

produces the fighter T4 cells, which are so

important in fighting cancer cells, viruses
and bacteria. It is vital that a person not only
wants to be well, but believes that they will
get well. This needs to be done through
education by finding out how your body
works and what it is capable of, and by
reading about and speaking to other people
who have recovered from cancer, and by
reviewing the spiritual side of your life.
There are several studies that indicate that
people who believe in God live longer and
are healthier. Research published in the
journal Liver Transplantation in 2010 backs
the findings of previous studies which have

shown how religion and faith can influence

disease progression. Dr Franco Bonaguidi,
from the Institute of Clinical Physiology in
Pisa, Italy, who led the study, said it found
patients with high religious coping who
actively sought Gods help and trusted their
beliefs had a more prolonged posttransplant survival than patients with low
religiosity.
There are a variety of so-called cures
available worldwide, but the common
denominator of all the programmes that
work is that a high raw fruit and vegetable
diet is encouraged together with the right
mental approach and spiritual balance.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

Allopathic treatment
Allopathic treatment consists of three main
methods:
Surgery, usually for tumours
Radiation therapy
Drug therapy chemotherapy
Sometimes one or two or all three
treatments are employed together. All three
can have severe side effects. Radiation and
chemotherapy work on the principle of
destroying cancer cells, but in the process
also destroy good, healthy cells. Possible
side effects are cellular death, unusual
cellular forms, cells that are incapable of
dividing, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, skin
rash, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, even bleeding cystitis, leucopoenia or reduction in the
white blood cell count, anaemia, pulmonary
fibrosis, renal failure, chills, fever, hyperpigmentation, anorexia, pharyngitis, etc.
To quote from The Merck Manual, a hand
book most doctors use:
Radiotherapy The effects of ionising
radiation are random: cellular death,
unusual aberrant cellular forms,
functional cells incapable of division or
functional cells that are unaltered.
Chemotherapy compounds similar
to mustard gas attach electron rich
regions of molecules This disruption of
cellular metabolism leads to cellular
death Toxicities include nausea,
vomiting, alopecia, haemorrhagic cystitis,
leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, anaemia,
pulmonary fibrosis and an increased risk
of acute no lymphatic leukaemia also
skin rash, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis and
cerebella ataxia.
Go online to see the movie Cut, Poison, Burn
(reviewed in this magazine) for viewpoints
from doctors and patients.
Some people choose to do the raw diet and
use the allopathic treatments above. I have
seen some that recover doing this, but often
the cancer returns, because damage is done
to the body; whereas the success rate on the
raw diet appears to be higher. I have seen
dozens in complete remission for five years
and then totally cured with the right diet. I
have also seen cancer return within a year or
two when people revert to their old diet.

There a re a va riety of
so-called cures availa ble
worldwide, but the common
denomin ator of all the
progra m mes that work is that
a high raw fruit and vegetable
diet is encouraged together with
the right mental approach a nd
spiritu al bala nce.

There are several natural products you can

use that benefit people with cancer; they are
not traditional supplements, but rather concentrated plant products like barley grass
juice, carrot juice and beet juice concentrate.
Other products are aloe vera gel and
Pomesteen juice, both natural plant extracts
that are known for their immune-boosting
effect due to the high levels of natural antioxidants they contain. Lycium and licorice
also have immune-boosting potential.

CANCER CURE

not good

for business

The war on cancer, just like the fake war on terror, is nothing more than a
joke. Only we are not laughing because it is like the disease itself sick.

ccording to USA statistics, one in three

women and one in two men will develop
cancer in their lifetime in the USA. With 1 500
people dying every day in the USA from
cancer, these are deadly statistics. While
accurate statistics are not available in South
Africa, it would appear that we are probably
very close to this level of severity.
So if you have six women friends, two of
them will eventually battle with some type of
cancer and will probably be made to suer
the toxic, cancer-causing treatments.
Who will win the battle? Most of the time
the cancer eventually wins because its usually
a case of lets try to kill the cancer before the
treatment kills the patient. The other winner
is the pharmaceutical company who supplies
the treatments at an average of $350 000
per patient (USA statistics).

Cancer is a $70 billion

industry in the USA
so are they really
searching for a cure?
Way back in 1971, President Richard Nixon
declared war on cancer and President Obama
did the same in 2009. So what happened in
those intervening 38 years? Very little. There
has been some progress in some rare cancers
testicular and childhood leukaemia but in
the common cancers (breast, prostate, lung,
colon, etc.) all that has happened is that
detection is earlier but with the same survival
rates. Statistics are often massaged to create
the feeling that more people are surviving
longer. For example, if the average survival time
is ve years from detection, but due to better
diagnostic procedures detection is made one
year earlier and the patient survives six years,
then the cancer industry is claiming a longer
survival time yet the patient has lived the
same amount of time with the cancer.

12

Its called lead time bias and its used to

extract donations and support toxic
treatments which earn BILLIONS of dollars for
Big Pharma.

Egos and greed halt

cancer cures
Lets take the example of the Pap smear test
to demonstrate:
In 1928, the Greek-American researcher
George Papanicolaou invented a test to
detect cancer in cervical cells when studied
using a microscope. This test proved that if
caught early enough, the pre-cancerous cells
could be prevented from developing and
lives could be saved. But because there was
an egotistical ght over whether it was
proper for a test to be done in the doctors
oce and then sent outside for examination,
the American Cancer Association decided
that it was a threat to the practice of medicine
and the test was not implemented for
29 years! Instead, women had high dose
radiation or radical surgery to remove the
cervix. Women died in huge numbers! When
this simple test was nally introduced the
death toll tumbled because cervical cancer is
entirely preventable.

We are well aware of our

breasts but how does
that help us prevent breast
cancer?
More proof that mainstream cancer research
associations are not trying to nd a cure is
contained within the breast cancer industry.

The attitude by the medical

profession towards a womans
reproductive system is nothing
less than shocking

Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), who

owned AstraZeneca, the original producers of
tamoxifen, started the Breast Cancer
Awareness month. ICI produce chemicals,
including chlorinated organic products,
which have been implicated in the cause of
some breast cancers.
The
industry-sponsored
awareness
campaigns are merely there to serve the
interests of companies who supply mammogram equipment and toxic treatments not
to inform women on how to prevent breast
cancer nor to nd a cure.
The American Cancer Society budget in
2008 was $1 041 012 000; of this $133 725 000
went to research and grants. Thats just 12.8%.
Salaries, on the other hand, accounted for
$409 163 000, which is nearly 40% of the total
budget. So only 12.8% went on research. That
means most of the money raised is NOT used
in the search for a cure.
Mammograms are implicated in the cause
of breast cancer because of the exposure to
radiation. They also produce false positives
and false negatives, which have serious
implications for women who undergo further
risky treatments such as biopsy, surgery,
chemotherapy, radiation and drugs. Ductal
Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) rarely develops into
cancer but the gures for the cure rate
include DCIS, which skews the statistics nicely
so that Big Pharma can lay claim to
improvements in survival rates. The fact is
that any man who gets prostate cancer or any
woman who gets breast cancer today, will live
as long as they would have had they
developed these cancers in 1920.
The attitude by the medical profession
towards a womans reproductive system is
nothing less than shocking. Consider this:
Tamoxifen is well-known for causing uterine
cancer as a side eect but the doctors say that
this is OK because a simple surgery will sort that
out in other words a hysterectomy. The latest
issue surrounding Angelina Jolie is also
indicative of the attitude towards women. Im
not criticising Angelinas decision because she
has the right to choose her own treatment but
was she given the right advice? Nothing in her
press release indicated that she was aware of
natural prevention or that diet and lifestyle
could positively reduce your risk factors.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

Was she also told that just because she had

the faulty BRCA1 gene that it would not
necessarily be expressed? It doesnt look that
way. Was she not told that faulty genes are
loaded guns and its the lifestyle that usually
pulls the trigger?
Instead, we are led to believe that the way
to prevent cancer is to cut out the oending
organ/body part even though there is no
cancer in it. Are we now going to remove our
brain if we are at risk of a brain tumour? All of
this is diversion, diversion, diversion! We are
being led away from natural prevention
simply because there is no money in it.

Are you being told the

truth about alternative
treatments?
Lets get this straight. You will NOT get information on natural prevention from conventional
oncologists. Nor will you get information on
alternative cancer treatments or cures. They just
arent trained in nutrition, the benecial eects
of vitamin D and sensible sun exposure or
viable, non-toxic cancer treatments. In fact
and certainly in America if an oncologist strays
from the Big Pharma treatments they are likely
to get their medical licence revoked and they
could land up in jail.
Instead, if you want to avoid cancer-causing
chemotherapy (yes, chemotherapy chemicals
cause cancer), cancer-causing radiation
therapy (yes, radiation therapy causes
cancer), risky surgery, hair loss, sickness, huge
medical bills and then death, then read on.

Avoiding cancer
the natural way
Enlightened medical professionals estimate
that anything from 9095% of cancer is
preventable. There are varying estimates of
how many cancer cases are genetic (anything
from 3% to 7%) but even a fair proportion of
these are highly preventable if healthy
lifestyles are followed.

How to avoid cancer:

1. Maintain a healthy weight obesity is
strongly linked to an increased risk of
cancer.
2. Do not smoke tobacco.
3. Optimise your vitamin D levels through
sensible sun exposure or vitamin D3
supplementation if your levels are still low.
People with darker skins are more at risk
of cancer because they cannot convert
sunshine into vitamin D as eciently as
people with lighter skin.
4. Exercise regularly!
5. Keep your blood-sugar levels balanced
insulin resistance is a contributory factor
in cancer.

Enlighten ed medical
professionals esti mate

9095% of ca ncer

6. Avoid rened sugar rened sugar feeds
cancer cells.
7. NEVER eat genetically modied (GMO)
food. NEVER, EVER, EVER.
8. Avoid electromagnetic elds reduce
your exposure to cellphones, computers,
electricity pylons, wireless internet, etc.
9. Avoid heated fats they are carcinogenic
(cancer-causing). This includes hydrogenated fats, trans-fatty acids and sh oils.
10. Avoid all rened grains and highly
processed foods.
11. Eat a diet that is at least 50%75% raw (raw
fruits and vegetables) and avoid pesticides
go for organic wherever possible.
12. Eat a diet that is 75% alkaline-forming and
no more than 25% acid-forming.

You deserve the truth

13. Balance your essential fats omega 3 and

omega 6 from plant sources. A good
ratio is one part omega 3 to two or three
parts omega 6.
14. Do not eat growth hormone-treated
commercial meat or processed meats.
15. Do not eat dairy that has been treated
with growth hormones. In fact, avoid dairy
or restrict to small quantities of organic
dairy. All dairy contains IGF-1, which is a
known promoter of breast cancer.
Hormone-treated
dairy
contains
substantially MORE IGF-1.
16. Do not use products that contain
chemicals known to disrupt hormones,
e.g. parabens, phthalates or other
products with cancer-causing chemicals.
This includes perfumes and fragranced
products, home cleaning products and
chlorine.
17. Do not eat food that contains heterocyclic
amines (HCA) produced when cooking
at high temperatures.
18. Avoid alcohol.
19. Educate yourself on what is really healthy.
Dont accept reports in the mainstream
media they are usually controlled by Big
Pharma interests.
20. Be happy!

Whats the definition of a good lover? Popular culture, movies, TV and certainly Australian society tell us that a good lover
equals quantity not quality.

eally? If we think about what makes a

good lover it makes no sense to dene
this as making love to as many dierent people as possible, once or twice. Being bombarded with Australian sexuality on a daily
basis and having come through my own journey of single woman, wife, mother and other
struggles it got me thinking. Lets get a bit of
balance here. To make love to the same person for life, to keep it exciting, to still be able
to take her to the mountain top, to know her
A to G spot, to turn her on, oat her boat and
make her beg or scream, to whisper something in his ear that means he cant get up
from the table just yet, to give him a glorious morning that has his cock crowing or a
night that blows his champagne cork after 20,
30, 40 years! Now I reckon thats more the definition of a good lover.
Of course we go through ups and downs
in life and marriage. Youre likely to have the
best sex and possibly the worst too. But
when you have time and trust on your side
and deep love instead of only lust, you can
get through these sticky patches, even talk
openly about them, because surely at some
stage we must be able to get to a level of
total honesty and intimacy, when we are
truly naked before another person, that
brings us closer together at the end of a
spat than we were before. Is this easy? No!
Is it worth it? Yes! MOTH (Man Of The House)
and I recently celebrated our 20th wedding
anniversary. We emigrated to Australia with
two children, 13 years ago, and now we
have six. Yes, lets get all the do you have a
TV? jokes out of the way. Actually, Mr Estate
Agent came to give our house a pre-sale
inspection last week. By the time we had
gone through the kitchen he had already
made two sexual innuendo jokes about
having six kids. By the time we were

14

upstairs and had inspected the other six

bedrooms, ours was the only one left and
he held nothing back! MOTH and I were
giving each other the ho hum look as Mr
Estate Agent guffawed at yet another of his
get a TV! jokes. It pushed me over the edge.
So I asked him, faking interest, how many
children he had? He stopped chuckling and
answered with some pride, oh just the
one!. Oh just the one? I echoed
questioningly. My husband started to flush,
he knew what was coming, as I observed
sincerely, So dont you like sex then? Or
do you just watch a lot of TV? Mr Estate
Agent spluttered awkwardly, broke out into
many shades of red and headed down the
stairs, away from our kingsize bed and
ironically straight into the lounge and a big
TV! Oh what a great climax to an otherwise
very awkward visit.

To make love to the

sa me person for life, to keep
it exciting, is more the
definition of a good lover
tha n making love to as
ma ny different people
as possible, once or twice
As I mentioned, we had just celebrated
our 20th wedding anniversary. It was a
worthy celebration because we honestly
almost didnt make it. Just weeks before,
everything had been hanging on by a
thread. So we decided to celebrate big and
do what Australian couples who want to go
away and shag all weekend do we went
to Bali of course! Sans children, who were at

home with our adopted Grandma. Through

our intense and passionate negative
struggles was born a realisation that we still
love each other deeply maybe we didnt
like each other some days, but love was not
the issue. Desperately trying to find myself
in my marriage, in a country that still doesnt
quite feel like home, through motherhood
and just the lost socks alone never mind the
actual dirty laundry we were sorting
through, I found my libido again! And that
came from MOTH intimately reconnecting
with me, thanks to a skilled counsellor, on a
real emotional level, committing to change
and in many ways, starting again. Wed
never been so naked with each other than
when we were fully clothed in the Shrinks
office. Validation and acknowledgement are
strong aphrodisiacs, it turns out. Deep and
meaningfuls took on a whole new meaning.
Back to Bali we arrived at our luxurious
hotel and walked into a spacious, gorgeous
bedroom with a footy field of a bed and
frangipanis arranged in a heart shape in the
middle of the playing field. MOTH had
mentioned the 20th anniversary to our
travel agent who had mentioned it to the
hotel. They knew why we were there. And
God bless them for it! I think we lived up to
their expectations and certainly beyond
ours, after 20 years! Its easy to be seduced
by Bali and its food, fragrances, luxurious
pampering, harmonious people and the
gentle but open embrace of human
sexuality. In the immortal words of Shirley
Valentine, it was sex for breakfast, sex for
lunch and sex for dinner! We realised that
the many years of babies, toddlers and small
children had taken their toll on us as a
couple. Little ones are so needy. But its a
season, in our case a very long season, but
it does eventually come to an end.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

We live in a house where nothing is ours

alone, as do any parents really. Our children
permeate every aspect of our lives, from our
bed to our bank balance. And thats how it
should be. But this journey, our heartache,
my despair, our snatched-back love, has
awakened us to the fact that there really is
only one area in our lives that can never be
shared with our children. Its mine and his
only and in marriage, its blessed. Yes! Yes!
Yes! Its our sex life. Waking up to this fact of
life that married couples seem to forget over
time, has certainly put us in a new position.
Its no longer just a part of our marriage, of
life, of domesticity, of boredom, of routine
its so much more than all that, and its
incredibly special. Perhaps because we
came so close to losing it all and because in

There really is

a big, busy family to have some privacy on

the loo is cause for celebration, our sex life
has started a new chapter. Its ours to do
with as we please. We can dutifully look
forward to every Saturday night I suppose,
after all weve been married for over 20
years. Or we can be Mom and Dad by day
and Cat Woman and Ironman by night
(thats just a metaphor BTW). The definition
of a good lover? To be able to make exciting
and passionate love to the same person for
a lifetime and never lose the power to
surprise or the licence to thrill. So Mr Estate

The Natural Kitchen

The Natural Kitchen

What are the BASICS

in a NATURAL KITCHEN?
The first thing is a good quality sharp knife, which we will investigate in another issue; then a great wooden chopping board
(wood has natural enzymes that destroy unfriendly bacteria), then choose the best pots you can find.

e slice and chop for a few minutes, but

we may have to cook something for a
few hours. Cooking for longer than 510
minutes will result in reactions between the
food and the cookware material, which in
turn results in leaching of chemical and metal
substances. So choose a pot that your food
cannot react with and will not leach anything
out of!
Here is a list of the most common pots
available and what can leach out of the cookware while you cook that delicious and
healthy meal.

Aluminium cookware
There have been over 100 studies about
aluminium and disease. This metal has
consistently been placed in the top 200
health-jeopardising toxins by the ATSDR
(Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease
Registry) at the US Department of Health and
Human Services. Aluminium pots are
prohibited in many European countries like
Germany, France and Switzerland to name
but a few and in some South American
countries like Brazil.
I realise that many improvements have
been made in aluminium pots and pans with
the advent of anodised aluminium (in which
a thicker aluminium oxide layer is created on
the surface of the pan). Yet, I still recommend
avoidance of aluminium cookware due to the
potential toxicity of aluminium itself. (This
focus on the health aspects of aluminium
cookware does not even take into account
environmental problems related to the
mining and dressing of aluminium.)
Scientists have found abnormally high
amounts of aluminium, zinc and other metals
in the brain tissue of people with Alzheimers.
Many of the symptoms of aluminium toxicity
mimic those of Alzheimers disease and
osteoporosis. Colic, rickets, gastrointestinal

16

problems, interference with the metabolism

of calcium, extreme nervousness, anaemia,
headaches, decreased liver and kidney
function, memory loss, speech problems, softening of the bones, and aching muscles can
all be caused by aluminium toxicity.
Dr A McGuigans report on Findings for the
Federal Trade Commission, Docket Case No.
540 Washington, DC, states the following:
Boiling water in aluminium produces
hydroxide poison.
Boiling an egg in aluminium produces
phosphate.
Boiling meat in aluminium produces
chloride.
Frying bacon in aluminium produces a
powerful narcotic acid, which in large
doses causes comas, or in excessive doses,
causes death.
All vegetables cooked in aluminium
produce hydroxide poison, which
neutralises the digestive juices, robbing
them of their value to digest food,
producing stomach and gastrointestinal
trouble, such as stomach ulcers and
colitis.
Aluminium poison will produce acidosis,
which destroys the red cells producing a
condition similar to anaemia.

advent of anodised alu miniu m.

toxicity of alu miniu m itself

Non-stick cookware
The non-stick coating industry started out
with Teflon in 1946 but has since grown to
include many other coatings including
Silverstone, Tefal, Anolon, Circulon, Caphalon
and others. Products like Caphalon actually
combine aluminium with non-stick materials
by subjecting anodised aluminium to a
polymer infusion process. These substances
emit toxic gases and particles that can result
in severe lung damage and death in birds
(so keep your parrot out of the kitchen
better still get rid of the pans) and can result
in flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fever,
chills, shortness of breath, tightness of chest,
tiredness, headache and cough.
This is the most popular cookware and also
the most controversial. According to the
Environmental Working Group non-stick
coatings can reach 700 degrees Fahrenheit in
as little as 35 minutes, releasing 15 toxic
gases and chemicals, including two carcinogens. At high heat the fluoropolymers used
in non-stick finishes release various toxic
substances and at least one greenhouse
gas. The greatest concerns surround
perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA), a substance
that persists in the environment and
widespread use of which has made it
detectable in the blood of almost all
Americans, adults and new-borns alike. PFOA
is considered a carcinogen and is associated
with raised levels of cholesterol and birth
defects. It is known to cause testicular, pancreatic, mammary and liver tumours in rats,
and workers exposed to PFOA have increased
risk for cancers of the pancreas and the male
reproductive tract.

Copper cookware
Copper pots look lovely hanging above the
stove and work wonders on the stovetop.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

With great heat conductivity and the ability

to cook foods evenly, many industry
professionals choose this material for their
own pots and pans. The disadvantages of
copper are its cost, its need for periodic
polishing, and the fact that it is reactive with
many foods.
Copper leaches into food when heated,
prompting the FDA to caution against using
unlined copper for general use. Accordingly,
the cooking surfaces are usually lined with tin,
nickel or stainless steel. Coated copper
cookware can lose its protective layer if
damaged or scoured. Keep in mind that the
metals of the protective surface can also end
up in your food.

Cast-iron cookware
Cast iron is known for its durability and even
heat distribution. Unglazed cast iron can
transfer notable amounts of iron into food.
These cookware products are the most
porous of all metals, and oil can turn rancid in
the pores. Some people believe that they can
get iron from a cast-iron pot. The reality is that
iron comes in a ferrous and a ferric form. Your
body cannot assimilate the iron (ferric) from a
cast-iron pan; it needs iron from a natural raw
source such as fresh fruit and vegetables.
Excessive iron from non-plant sources is toxic
to humans, because excess iron reacts with
peroxides in the body, producing free radicals.
Iron becomes toxic when it exceeds the
amount of transferrin needed to bind free
iron. In excess, uncontrollable quantities of
free radicals are produced.
Excess iron accumulates in organs such as
the heart, liver, joints, pancreas and pituitary
gland. If untreated, this accumulation can
cause organ damage, and diseases such as
heart disease, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver,
liver cancer, arthritis, and depression, chronic
fatigue (the most common symptom), joint
pain/arthritis, loss of sex drive, impotence or
early menopause, irregular heartbeat or heart
problems, abdominal pain, weight loss,
change in skin colour (i.e. jaundice, reddish or
grey) and elevated blood sugar.
People with iron overloads are often
misdiagnosed as having other disorders,
including arthritis, diabetes, heart problems,
liver/gallbladder disease, or various stomach
disorders.

Plastic
Plastic simply shouldnt be an option, although
many people use it in microwaving. Both plastic
and microwaving are considered toxic to the
human body. Xenoestrogens and other toxic
substances can be released into the food.

Silicone
Silicone is chemically produced by creating a
backbone of silicone from common sand
and oxygen molecules, a combination that
does not occur in nature. Then various other
synthetic molecules are added to this core
backbone to create different silicones that
range from liquids to rubbery solids
resulting in a huge variety of completely
man-made products.
Some of the chemicals used are: methylene
chloride (aka dichloromethan), which breaks
down in the body so blood cannot carry

The Natural Kitchen

oxygen, platinum toluene, xylene, Freon,

phenol, benzene (a known carcinogen),
acetone, etc.
When Jamey Lacy-July (a certified fitness
specialist, who established Houstons first fullscale personal training and physical rehabilitation centre) interviewed Thomas Talcott, a
former engineer for Dow Corning, she asked
him in 2000 if anything had changed in new
silicone formulas that wouldnt leach chemicals.
He replied, Silicone is silicone is silicone
these products will always be made with a
batch of chemicals some considered toxic to
the human body. Whatever silicone product
you have that is exposed for any duration to the
friction, heat and moisture of the human body
is going to eventually break down. That can
occur as early as just a few months, or over
several years its a bit of a crapshoot! He was
speaking of silicone implants, which are made
in a similar way to bakeware.

Ceramic enamelled and

glass cookware
Health concern about using glassware or
enamelware comes from components used
in the making, such as lead or cadmium.
Health professionals are also concerned
about the use of lead in these pans. Boron
and lead are used in making glass, enamel
and porcelain cookware. Studies have shown
lead, a heavy metal, if consumed can cause
neurological damage, especially in young
children.

17

The Natural Kitchen

However, there havent actually been

studies testing silicones reactions with food
under heat. The non-reactive claim is just
based on the fact that silicon (the element) is
inert. Again, lets be serious: just because
something in nature is fairly stable doesnt
mean Ill necessarily cook and eat on it.
New York Times food writer Marian Burros
has written about the usefulness of silicone
cookware. After testing a variety of products,
Ms Burros reported that the baking pans are
not as non-stick as you might think: she found
that you do have to grease them if you want
your cakes and muffins to slide out
unscathed. She had the most trouble with
loaf pans, cake tins, brownie pans and Bundt
pans. But she gave a rave review to
potholders that double as trivets, mitt-type
potholders, and a spatter screen that she
found actually did prevent grease from
speckling the stove top.
When you buy silicone products, make sure
that you get good quality ones that dont
contain any filler. Ms Burros recommended
pinching and twisting a flat surface to see if
white shows through if so, filler has been
used and the product may not be uniformly
heat resistant and may impart an odour to
food, and odour means chemicals are
leaching out.

Microwaves
In the Journal of Science of Food and
Agriculture, Cristina Garcia-Viguera reports on
a study that measured antioxidant levels in
broccoli after it was cooked in various ways.
Microwaved broccoli had the lowest levels of
antioxidants (less than 5% of the original antioxidants found in fresh broccoli remained),
probably because of the high internal temperatures generated by this cooking method.
Boiling wasnt a good way to retain antioxidants
either, with only about 20% of them preserved
in the food (about 35% if the cooking water was
used as well). Pressure-cooking was slightly
better, with about 46% being retained in the
food (about 91% if the cooking water was used
as well). Steaming retained about 89% of the
antioxidants. Of course, you could just eat your
broccoli raw and get the full dose.
The best quality stainless steel titanium
(316 Ti) pots maintain up to 94% of the
nutrients in broccoli and can save you up to
90% of the energy costs. This is great news as
people find they eat less, and their electricity
and gas costs go down considerably. And this
helps recover the cost of the pots as they are
expensive.

Recommended cookware
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is an alloy (or combination) of
metals, including steel, carbon, nickel and
chromium. Stainless steel is called stainless
because it can resist corrosion. Most stainless
steel cookware sold in stores is made from the
304 alloy. Because of the softness of this grade
of metal, when heated, it expands and the
food sticks to the pan. You are then forced to
cook with oil and the pan becomes difficult
to clean.
Stainless steel readily reacts with organic
acids, particularly at cooking temperatures;
iron, chromium, and nickel are released from
the material into the food. Nickel is implicated
in numerous health problems, notably allergic
contact dermatitis, and it is considered a
carcinogen. Home cookware was examined
by atomic absorption spectroscopy: seven
different stainless utensils as well as cast iron,
mild steel, aluminium and enamelled steel.
The materials were exposed to mildly acidic
conditions at boiling temperature. Nickel was
a major corrosion product from stainless steel
utensils; chromium and iron were also
detected.

Investing in the best

cookwa re you ca n find is
worth it, as you will know
that the healthy, whole, organic
food you have gone to the
trou ble of sourcing will at
least maintain most of its
nutrients
Stainless steel that contains titanium is the
most non-reactive cookware that you can
find. It is known as 316Ti. This is the least
reactive, strongest, but unfortunately the
most expensive cookware available.
As with non-stick surfaces, it is suggested
you avoid using abrasives for cleaning
stainless steel cookware.

The bottom line

Investing in the best cookware you can find
is worth it, as you will know that the healthy,
whole, organic food you have gone to the
trouble of sourcing will at least maintain most
of its nutrients.

I find it interesting that people will spend a

fortune on their holidays, their cars and their
clothes, and their food but then spend as little
as possible on the cookware to prepare that
food in. Surely what you put into your body is
more important that what is outside it?
When weighing health and environmental
issues, remember that in the US chemicals
and other products are generally considered
safe until proven otherwise. Is there
irrefutable proof that non-stick pans can
cause cancer, or that aluminium cookware
could be a factor in Alzheimers disease?
Some say yes and some say no.
We are basically like lab rats, somewhere
between science and the spin doctoring from
the marketers, trying to be healthy and live
naturally; the burden of proof is usually on us
we are responsible for our own health, so
choose carefully.

PROPHYLACTIC

mastectomy
Pam Popper, ND

More and more breast cancer patients are

choosing to have their healthy breasts
removed when their breast with cancer is
amputated, according to an article in The
Journal of Clinical Oncology (online
October 23, 2007).

s many as 8 000 to 10 000 women per year are

opting for this procedure, and the motivation is
that they think they are eliminating the risk of
developing breast cancer again. However, this is not
the case. For the vast majority of our patients, this does
not impact the chances of dying of breast cancer,
according to Dr Julie Gralow, chairwoman of the
American Society of Clinical Oncology and associate
professor of medical oncology at the University of
Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research
Center in Seattle. There are several issues with this
strategy. First, women are not being told that breast
cancer is a highly preventable disease. Dietary
excellence and optimal habits are very effective for the
prevention of breast cancer, or a recurrence thereof.

For the vast majority of our

patients, this does not impact
the cha nces of dying of
breast ca ncer
On the other hand, failure to adopt a programme of
dietary excellence and optimal habits following a
diagnosis of breast or any other form of cancer virtually
guarantees that additional health issues will develop.
Treatments for breast cancer are often the cause of
recurrence, and many times the recurrence is not in
either breast but rather the result of metastases. Many
effective treatment options do not involve amputation
of the diseased breast, let alone the healthy one. This is
one more case in which patients are making poor
choices based on inaccurate or incomplete
information. The only encouraging thing is that even
traditional medical professionals are speaking out and
acknowledging that this may not be the best plan of
action. Commentary following publication of this article
included statements encouraging women to get
counselling and take time before making a decision to
undergo contralateral prophylactic mastectomy.

FOODS with the

MOST POWERFUL
ANTI-CANCER EFFECTS
Dr Joel Fuhrman MD

Nutrition scientists have shown over and over that people who eat more natural plant foods vegetables, fruits, legumes,
nuts and seeds, etc. are less likely to be diagnosed with cancer. But are all vegetables equally protective? To win the war
on cancer, we must design an anti-cancer diet, which focuses on the foods with the most powerful anti-cancer eects
then we could eat plenty of these foods each day, flooding our bodies with the protective substances contained within
them.

The cruciferous family

of vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables and

breast cancer

The cruciferous family of vegetables is full of

super foods with powerful anti-cancer effects
we should eat vegetables from this family
every day. This family includes green
vegetables like kale and bok choy plus some
non-green vegetables like cauliflower.
Cruciferous vegetables contain glucosinolates and in a different area of the cell, an enzyme called myrosinase. When we blend,
chop or chew these vegetables, we break up
the plant cells, allowing myrosinase to come
into contact with glucosinolates, initiating a
chemical reaction that produces isothiocyanates (ITCs), which are powerful anti-cancer compounds. ITCs have been shown to
detoxify and remove carcinogens, kill cancer
cells, and prevent tumours from growing.

Cruciferous vegetables are especially helpful for

preventing hormonal cancers, such as breast
cancer, because some ITCs, such as indole-3carbinol (abundant in broccoli, Brussels sprouts
and cabbage), can even help the body excrete
oestrogen and other hormones. In fact, new
research has shown additional anti-oestrogenic
effects of both indole-3-carbinol and
sulforaphane (most abundant in broccoli); these
ITCs blunt the growth-promoting effects of
oestrogen on breast and cervical cancer cells.
Eating cruciferous vegetables produces
measurable isothiocyanates in breast tissue,
and observational studies show that women
who eat more cruciferous vegetables are less
likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer: In
a recent Chinese study, women who regularly
ate one serving per day of cruciferous
vegetables had a 50% reduced risk of breast
cancer. A 17% decrease in breast cancer risk
was found in a European study for consuming
cruciferous vegetables at least once a week.
Plus, breast cancer survivors who eat
cruciferous vegetables regularly have a lower
risk of cancer recurrence the more cruciferous vegetables they ate, the lower their risk.
Read more on DiseaseProof.com.

Observational studies
Observational studies have shown that eating
ITC-rich cruciferous vegetables protects
against cancer here are a few examples:
Twenty-eight servings of vegetables per
week decreased prostate cancer risk by
33%, but just three servings of cruciferous
vegetables per week decreased prostate
cancer risk by 41%.
One or more servings of cabbage per
week reduced the risk of pancreatic cancer
by 38%.
One serving per day of cruciferous vegetables reduced the risk of breast cancer
by over 50%.

A profound level of
protection against cancer
Within an overall nutrient-dense eating style,
cruciferous vegetables can provide us with a
profound level of protection against cancer.
Dont forget: chopping, chewing, blending, or
juicing cruciferous vegetables is necessary to
produce the anti-cancer ITCs. To learn more
about reducing your risk of cancer, read
Dr Furhmans book called Super Immunity.

preventing hormonal ca ncers,

Dr Fuhrman writes, As I describe in my book
Super Immunity, G-BOMBS (Greens, Beans,
Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds) are
the foods with the most powerful immuneboosting and anti-cancer effects. These foods
help to prevent the cancerous transformation
of normal cells, and keep the body armed and
ready to attack any pre-cancerous or cancerous cells that may arise.
G Greens
Green vegetables (the cruciferous family in
particular) contain compounds with anticancer compounds and substances that
protect blood vessels; they also promote
healthy vision and reduce diabetes risk.
Cruciferous vegetable phytochemicals inhibit
a wide range of cancer-promoting cellular
processes, including angiogenesis; the angiogenesis inhibitors found in cruciferous
vegetables prevent new blood vessel growth,
which is needed for tumour growth and fat
tissue growth. Eating cruciferous vegetables
regularly is associated with decreased risk of
breast cancer and has even been shown to
increase survival in women after being
diagnosed with breast cancer.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

Focus on Cancer

B Beans
Beans are unique foods because of their very
high levels of fibre and resistant starch
carbohydrates that are not broken down by
digestive enzymes. The fibre and resistant
starch in beans reduce the number of calories
absorbed from beans, reduce cholesterol
levels, and are converted by healthy gut
bacteria into many substances that protect
against colon cancer. Eating fibre-rich beans
regularly dramatically lowers colon cancer
risk, and a recent analysis of ten scientific studies
has shown that the higher your fibre intake, the
lower your risk of breast cancer.
o onions
Onions, leeks, garlic, shallots, chives and
scallions not only lend great flavour to meals,
they have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems, as well as
anti-diabetic and anti-cancer effects. These vegetables are known for their characteristic (and
eye-irritating) organosulfur compounds, which
slow tumour growth and kill cancer cells
eating onions and garlic frequently is
associated with reduced risk of digestive
cancers. These vegetables also contain high
concentrations of anti-inflammatory flavonoid
antioxidants that contribute to their anti-cancer
properties.
M Mushrooms
In one recent Chinese study, women who ate
at least 10 grams of fresh mushrooms each
day (which equates to about one button
mushroom per day) had a 64% decreased risk
of breast cancer! All types of mushrooms have
anti-cancer properties. Plus, mushrooms are
unique in that they contain aromatase
inhibitors compounds that can block the
production of oestrogen. Aromatase
inhibitors are thought to be largely
responsible for the preventive effects of
mushrooms against breast cancer. Even the
most commonly eaten mushrooms (white,
cremini, and Portobello) have high antiaromatase activity. Mushrooms also contain
powerful angiogenesis inhibitors. Keep in mind
that mushrooms should only be eaten cooked:
several raw culinary mushrooms contain a
potentially carcinogenic substance called
agaritine, and cooking mushrooms significantly
reduces their agaritine content.
B Berries (and pomegranate)
Berries plentiful antioxidant content helps to
reduce blood pressure and inflammation,
prevents DNA damage that leads to cancer,
protects the brain against oxidative damage
and stimulates the bodys own antioxidant
enzymes. Berries and pomegranate are
anti-angiogenic foods, and have antiinflammatory effects that may protect against
cancer and other chronic diseases. Pomegranate (similar to mushrooms) is one of the
few foods that contain natural aromatase
inhibitors substances that inhibit the
production of oestrogen, which can
reduce breast cancer risk.

S Seeds
Nuts and seeds are healthy fat sources that increase the absorption of nutrients in
vegetables in addition to supplying their own
spectrum of micronutrients including plant
sterols (which help to reduce cholesterol),
minerals and antioxidants. Some seeds
sesame and flax in particular are rich in lignans, plant oestrogens that protect against
breast cancer. In one fascinating study,
women were given flaxseeds daily after being
diagnosed with breast cancer, and reduced
growth and increased death of their tumour
cells was found after just 45 weeks.

Mobility for pain-free

movement, health and
longevity
Convention states that as we age, we lose our
mobility and overall fitness. We develop arthritic
conditions, neuro-muscular issues, muscular
atrophy, bone density loss and a host of
degenerative ailments that plague us till we
depart from this planet.
Melodrama aside, we dont need to suffer
these complaints as they are simply a result of
modern living. By following a few daily habits
we may regain our birth right of pain-free,
effortless movement, which forms the
foundation of healthy, physical living.
Natural eating, moving regularly and finding
your balance in life creates the quality to the
quantity of years we live.
If youd like to stack the odds even more in
your favour, why not practise the art of mobility
training?
Mobility training is based on the idea that all
movement is rotational or circular and if we
move each and every joint complex in our
bodies through their entire range of motion, we
enhance and extend our health.
Moving slowly and safely towards areas of
pain or tension we may be experiencing, we
reverse and release myofascial adhesions,
tension and even trauma.
The benefits of mobilising your joints cannot
be overstated. Have you ever seen footage of
Asian people practising tai chi or chi kung
(which means breathe work or synchronised
breathing and movement) in groups on busy
street corners and in their local parks? Have you
noticed how the age groups vary from the very
young to the very old?
Mobility training has been a part of oriental
culture for many hundreds of years, and their
lifestyle is a pure reflection of their renowned
longevity and health (both physical and

24

mental). And, worth noting, as our oriental

counterparts adopt our occidental lifestyles,
they too begin to suffer our ailments!
Movement can only be experienced.
Intellectually it may make sense, but ask anyone
in pain to move their body with good form and
through full range of motion. The irony is that
tight muscles and myofascia (connective tissue)
are released through movement.
There are also many natural healing and
therapeutic modalities which will greatly
assist you. Medication is at times necessary too,
but it carries short- and long-term side
effects and does not address the underlying
causes, which will end up returning, referring
and or leading to further strain, injury or
illness.
If you want to live a pain-free life, able to play
with your children, carry your shopping to your
car, climb the stairs to your office or run up a
mountain, mobility practice should become
integrated with your daily living. For less than
ten minutes a day, it is worth the little bit of
effort for such amazing returns.
For an excellent resource on mobility
training, see http://intu-flow.com.

Fitness the measure of

physical and mental health
Have you ever thought about what fitness
means to you? How about fitness and how it
relates to your health (mental and physical),
ability to enjoy living and even your thought
patterns and behaviour?

Move ment is rotational or

circular a nd if we move each an d

bodies through their entire range

extend our health

Have you ever noticed how after doing

something active your mood is greatly
enhanced? When we are feeling good, people
around us seem to be nicer, our personal
needs are more easily fulfilled and we are
more optimistic about everything. It feels
good feeling good!
Movement is a fundamental component of
health and happiness. And you dont need a
scientific degree to know this or experience
it.
It is worth mentioning that when we are in
a healthy state of mind, clarity of mind and
ability to focus allow us to behave and act in
positive ways that enhance our lives and
those around us.
Relationships, both business and personal,
improve and positive growth becomes a logical
and very real progression. Even when
challenges strike, we are more prepared to deal
with them as we are mentally and physically
stronger and that much more resilient.
We all have to start somewhere and moving
will always require some level of consistent and
committed effort. It is the nature of progression
(positive adaptation) versus plateauing or even
regression (maladaptation).
With a little consistent effort, however, the
results are worth it!
Heres a little challenge for you.
Focus on and follow these three simple daily
practices for 30 days: move, eat, recover.
You will be amazed at how quickly your mind
and body respond to this very simple, yet
powerfully effective focus. You will feel great,
look great and have the energy to do what you
want to when you want to.

Move
Choose some form of physical activity that you
will perform every day for the next 30 days.
Choose the intensity (i.e. physical effort) according to your current level of fitness and health.

Vaccines for CERVICAL CANCER
Research by Mary-Ann Shearer, with her personal comments given in italics
Mary-Ann is the best-selling author of The Natural Way series of books and co-owner of The Natural Way Network. She has spent
the last 30 years researching and living healthy living. The results no doctors bills due to ill health for nearly 30 years for herself
and her family.

I was recently asked to comment on the vaccination of young girls against cervical cancer in South Africa for a television
programme.

overnment will start administering cervical

cancer vaccines in schools from February
next year (2014), Health Minister Aaron
Motsoaledi has announced.
Quoting experts, he said cervical cancer
affected 6 000 South African women a year,
80% of them black. More than half the women
affected died of the disease.
While the HPV vaccine presented an
opportunity to prevent women from
contracting cancer, there were still obstacles to
overcome.

Govern ment will start

administering cervical cancer
va ccines in schools from
Fe brua ry 2014

The very bad news is that the prices are prohibitive, at between R500 and R750 a dose, and
you need three doses to be covered, he said.
Since the vaccine only works fully if
administered before girls become sexually
active, it would be given to 9- and 10-year-old
girls.
However, the roll-out would start only in
quintile one (the poorest), two, three and four
schools, covering around 520 000 girls. The
wealthiest (quintile five) schools are not
included.

That is a cost of R260 million to R390

million who is paying for this? The
taxpayers. And who is making the money?
Pharmaceutical companies, government
officials and cronies acting as middlemen.
Potential side effects are not discussed
and if these girls from low income homes
(as the schools indicate) suffer side effects,
what can they do?
They do not have access to the
sophisticated legal system required to sue
for side effects such as infertility and death.

Most cervical cancers are caused by the

sexually transmitted infection human
papillomavirus (HPV). Widespread HPV
immunisation, however, could reduce the
impact of cervical cancer worldwide. Here,
Bobbie Gostout, MD, an HPV infection expert
and gynaecologic surgeon at Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, Minn., discusses the cervical cancer
vaccine:
Various strains of HPV, which spread
through sexual contact, cause most cases of
cervical cancer. Two cervical cancer vaccines
have Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
approval in the US Gardasil and Cervarix.
Both vaccines can prevent most cases of
cervical cancer if given before a girl or woman
is exposed to the virus.
The
cervical
cancer
vaccine
is
recommended for girls and boys aged 11 to
12 years, although it may be given as early as
age 9. Its important for boys and girls to
receive the vaccine before they have sexual
contact and are exposed to HPV. Once
infected with HPV, the vaccine may not be as
effective.
If not fully vaccinated at ages 11 to 12, the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) recommends that girls and women up
to and including age 26 and boys and men
up to and including age 21 receive the
vaccine. However, men may receive the HPV
vaccine up to and including age 26 if desired.
Both vaccines are given as a series of three
injections over a six-month period. The
second dose is given one to two months after
the first dose, and the third dose is given six
months after the first dose.
The cervical cancer vaccine isnt
recommended for pregnant women or
people who are moderately or severely ill.

Why not?

Tell your doctor if you have any severe

allergies, including an allergy to yeast or latex.

Why are three doses of

the cervical cancer
vaccine needed?
Researchers dont yet know what antibody levels
provide adequate protection from HPV.

If they dont know, how can they vaccinate?

In early clinical trials, researchers observed that
womens antibody levels continued to increase
with each of the three doses of the vaccine. Since
antibody levels inevitably fall once you stop
getting a vaccine, it makes sense to start with
high antibody levels and attempt to get the
greatest HPV protection for the longest possible
time years or even decades. Over time,
however, researchers may find that three doses
of the vaccine arent necessary or that a booster
shot is needed years later.
In clinical trials, Gardasil and Cervarix were
effective in groups of sexually active women age
26 or younger, some of whom had already been
infected with one or more types of HPV.
However, Gardasil and Cervarix only protect you
from specific strains of HPV to which you havent
been exposed. The more sexual partners youve
had, the greater your chance of having been
exposed to multiple types of HPV.

This appears to be a huge scam. Women

under 26 have very little risk for cervical
cancer, so if you vaccinate those under 26,
there will be no cases of cervical cancer,
which will look fantastic in your statistics for
these drugs. Wonderful, we got rid of
cervical cancer under the age of 26! But there
was no cervical cancer in those groups to
start with! The Emperor has no clothes!

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

Clearly the vaccine is not protective, and

to cover themselves they will be able to
say that you were exposed to one of the
strains not in the vaccine!
There is still a good chance that you will
get one of the various strains you are not
covered for, if you are sexually promiscuous.
So why not educate young people about
the risks of sexual promiscuity, then,
chances are, they wont get the so-called
virus that supposedly causes the cancer?
This vaccine will give young people licence
to be even more reckless in their sexual
activities.
The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
prevents infection with certain species of HPV
associated with the development of cervical
cancer, genital warts, and some less common
cancers. The two available HPV vaccines,
Gardasil and Cervarix, both protect against
the two HPV types (HPV-16 and HPV-18) that
cause 70% of cervical cancers, 80% of anal
cancers, 60% of vaginal cancers, and 40% of
vulvar cancers. These HPV types also cause
most HPV-induced oral cancers, and some
other rare genital cancers. Gardasil also protects against the two HPV types (HPV-6 and
HPV-11) that cause 90% of genital warts.
Both vaccines have been shown to prevent
potentially pre-cancerous lesions of the
cervix. Gardasil has been shown to prevent
potential precursors to anal, vulvar, vaginal
and penile cancers. HPV vaccines are
expected to protect against HPV-induced
cancers of these areas as well as HPV-induced
oral cancers.

So if the vaccine protects against penile,

anal and genital warts, why are young men
not being given this vaccine? This could be
seen as experimenting on women and girls
and if that is the case it is women and child
abuse! Or the young men are not seen as
valuable enough to spend the money on
vaccinating!
Are the women worth the risk or are the
men not worth the cost? Whichever way
you play it, this it is discriminatory! I would
infer that this is a huge experiment that taxpayers are paying for in hard-earned money
and young girls might pay for with their
health or life!

HPV vaccination is approved for use in males in

many areas. In addition to protecting their
partners from cervical cancer, vaccination can
protect males against anal cancer, and may
prevent other HPV-associated cancers. Gardasil
can also protect males against genital warts.
HPV vaccination has been recommended for
males in the United States, where vaccine
uptake among women has been low.

Are the women worth the risk or

are the men not worth the cost?

Why is the vaccine uptake low and why

are they so desperate to give it to someone, anyone?!

Vaccination is also recommended in

populations at higher risk for HPV-associated
cancers, such as men who have sex with men
and those with compromised immune
response.

Efficacy
Both Gardasil and Cervarix have been shown
to prevent cervical dysplasia from the high-risk
HPV types 16 and 18 and some protection
against a few closely related high-risk HPV
types. However, there are other high-risk HPV
types that are not affected by the vaccines. The
protection against HPV-16 and 18 has lasted
five years after vaccination for Gardasil1 and
more than six years for Cervarix. It is thought
that booster vaccines will not be necessary.

Okay, so it protects for five to six years and

then what?
So say you get vaccinated at 9 or 10 years,
that means you are protected until 14 or 15
years. The risk of cervical cancer in that age
group is virtually nil! So why risk the side
effects and the expense?

Gardasil also protects against low-risk HPV

types 6 and 11, which do not cause cancer but
do cause genital warts.
A recent analysis of data from a clinical trial of
Cervarix found that this vaccine is just as
effective at protecting women against
persistent HPV-16 and 18 infection in the anus
as it is at protecting them from these infections
in the cervix.
Overall, about 30 per cent of cervical cancers
will not be prevented by these vaccines. Also,
in the case of Gardasil, 10 per cent of genital
warts will not be prevented by the vaccine.
Neither vaccine prevents other sexually
transmitted diseases, nor do they treat HPV
infection or cervical cancer.

Focus on Cancer

According to the British National Health

Services, the following side effects may occur:
More than one in ten will have swelling,
pain, bruising and water retention at the
site of the vaccine
Headaches
More than 100 will suffered from fever
Nausea
Painful arms, legs, hands and or feet
1 in 10 000 will have get an itchy rash or
hives
Bronchospasm restricted breathing in
just under 10 000
Other side effects reported:
Blood problems leading to unexplained
bruising or bleeding
Chills
Fainting or losing consciousness
Dizziness
General feeling of being unwell
Guillain Barr syndrome
Joint pain
Lymphadenopathy
Muscle pain or tenderness
Seizures
Tiredness
Vomiting
Weakness
Vasculitis inflammation that destroys
blood vessels
Infertility
Menstrual disorders
Death
Some of these symptoms have lasted for
more than two years in some of the victims.

The Truth about Gardasil

The long-term effects of the vaccine on fertility

are not known, but no effects are anticipated.

The website, The Truth about Gardasil.org,

reports that as of the summer of 2009, there
have been more than 15 000 reported
reactions to Gardasil, including more than
3 000 injuries and 48 deaths. Fourteen of the
girls who died after getting Gardasil were
under the age of 16 years. As of 2013 they
claim 103 deaths from this one drug alone.
The stories of some of them are on
www.thethruthaboutgardasil.org, such as:
Jenny Tetlock, California
Moshella Roberts, 20, a student from
Fayetteville State University
Brooke Petkevicius, Florida, aged 19
Christina Richelle Tarsell, Sparks, Maryland
Amber Kaufman, St Louis, Missouri, a
perfectly healthy 16-year-old
Megan Hild, Los Lunas, New Mexico, died
aged 20
Santana G Valdez, Albuquerque, New
Mexico
Jessica Ericzon, Alexandria Bay, NY, died
February 2008, aged 17
Jasmin Soriat, Germany, 19 years

So an insufficiently tested drug is being

administered to young girls! I would say that
is definitely child abuse! Especially when
you look at the possible side effects below.

The comments below by Dr Diane Harper,

indicate that even recognised researchers
have some serious reservations regarding this
vaccine. The recipient of a Masters Degree in
Public Health, Harper is a Professor and

This drug has not been around long

enough to have such clear stats, but either
way, it is clear that you can still get cervical
cancer, and if you do, they will say that your
strain was not in the vaccine, sorry!

Focus on Cancer

Gardasil offers sexually active women, who do

not currently have HPV-6, 11, 16, or 18
infections, protection from genital warts and
CIN 2+ disease for five years. If the vaccinated
person is not sexually active during the five
years of its efficacy, then the vaccine has not
protected her from disease (as we do not
have evidence that Gardasil offers efficacy any
longer than five years). Its faults include tiny
antibody titres for all HPV types other than
HPV-16; limited protection; limited duration
of efficacy; and safety concerns.
Can you comment on the disconnect
between the fact that ecacy was proven
only in the 1626 year old demographic,
yet Gardasil is being approved for those in
the 926 year old demographic?
Immunologically, the disconnect is explained
by two studies. One study in the 1626 yearold women showed both antibody titres and
efficacy. The second study in 915 year-olds
showed similar antibody titres to those
induced in 1626 year-olds where efficacy
was seen. Hence, the inference is that efficacy
must exist in 915 year-olds. The fault in this
logic is that 915 year-olds may not be
exposed to the virus until after the vaccine
has waned.
do you believe that the Gardasil vaccine,
as it currently stands, could present more
risks to a young girl or woman than the
possibility of cervical cancer?
Pap smears have never killed anyone. Pap
smears are an effective screening tool to
prevent cervical cancer. Pap smears alone
prevent more cervical cancers than can the
vaccines alone.
Gardasil is associated with serious adverse
events, including death. If Gardasil is given to
11-year-olds, and the vaccine does not last at
least fifteen years, then there is no benefit
and only risk for the young girl. Vaccinating
will not reduce the population incidence of
cervical cancer if the woman continues to get
Pap screening throughout her life.

The institutions at which I conducted the
clinical trials were reimbursed for the costs of
conducting the trials. I received no direct
money for conducting the trials. I was a
consultant for both GSK and Merck, for which
I was paid.
The incidence rate of cervical cancer in the
United States based on screening is 7 in
100 000 women per year.
The incidence rate of cervical cancer if
women are only vaccinated with Gardasil
is 14 in 100 000 per year (twice the rate of
cervical cancer if young women
vaccinated with Gardasil do not seek Pap
testing at 21 years and the rest of their life).
(Pap tests have no side effects.)

The marketing campaign was designed to

incite the greatest fear possible in parents, so
that there would be uptake of the vaccine. If
parents and girls were told the benefits and
harms of Pap screening and HPV vaccines as
described above, an informed and valued
decision would have been able to be made.
Many may have chosen to continue with a
lifetime of Pap screening and forgo the
vaccines, with the unknowns of duration of
efficacy and safety unable to be answered for
many more years.
No one wants the incidence of cervical
cancer to increase. But, there is a problem
with womens understanding of what Gardasil
offered them. Many vaccinated women have
returned to me in the clinic with more
abnormal Pap tests and more HPV disease.
They are tremendously disappointed when
told that Gardasil does not protect against all
types of HPV, and that they are still at risk for
cervical cancer:
Gardasil will not protect them for life.
They can get other HPV infections that
lead to cancer that are not covered by
Gardasil.
They need to continue to have Pap tests
throughout their lifetime.
recent reports state that Gardasil may
have triggered MS (multiple sclerosis) in
some girls receiving the vaccine. What
are your thoughts on this?
Neurologists at the American Neurological
Association have indeed concluded that
Gardasil is temporarily associated with autoimmune attacks on the neurologic system. The
range of neurologic disorders is unknown.
For instance, the cumulative incidence of
HPV infections for women in the US through
the age of 50 years old is 80%. That statement
is true. That statement infers that nearly everyone is infected with HPV at least once in their
life.
What is left out is that 95% of all HPV
infections are cleared spontaneously by the
bodys immune system. The remaining 5%
progress to cancer precursors.

So surely teaching people to keep their

immune system healthy, with a healthy
balanced lifestyle, which includes sexual
behaviour, diet, exercise and emotional
wellbeing, would be a better way to
spend taxpayers money.

It would not only result in less HPV and

cancer, but less HIV, less heart disease, less
arthritis, gout, asthma, diabetes and a host
of other diseases, which are not protected
against by any vaccine. Health comes from
healthy living the sooner we get this, the
better off everyone in the country will be.
We need to teach people about
personal responsibility for their health. The
government is not responsible for our
health issues, we are.
The government should be focused on
educating people to grow and eat whole
foods, rather than spending money on
drugs that are not sufficiently tested, have
little coverage and a host of horrific side
effects.

The South African Health Department in the

meantime has proposed screening women
over the age of 30 years and offering
asymptomatic women three free smears in a
lifetime, 10 years apart.

If this screening is offered at this age, 30,

then clearly this is the high risk group. The
vaccine only lasts five to six years, so
clearly it will not serve any purpose and
not have any effect in the high-risk age
group, as the plan is to vaccinate girls
aged 910 years of age!

Cancer of the cervix also needs to be understood in the context of the HIV epidemic. In
2007, it was estimated that 33 million adults
and children were infected with HIV globally,
of whom 22 million (67%) were living in subSaharan Africa, where 75% of the worlds HIVrelated deaths were recorded. While the
expected increase in cervical cancer (which is
considered an AIDS-defining illness by the
Centers for Disease Control, USA) has not
materialised in Africa, as more and more
women infected with HIV survive due to
access to and use of antiretroviral therapy,
cervical cancer incidence is likely to be
increased by the HIV epidemic.

Clearly cancer of the cervix is higher in

areas where HIV is higher indicating this is
an immune problem and if that is the case,
good nutrition is our only hope of
eradicating this disease.
The Emperor clearly has no clothes can
anyone see this?

Are you ready for a

RELATIONSHIP
Dr Mark Stonestreet
BA (Psych)(Wits); BA Hons (RAU); MA (Clin Psych); D.Litt.et.Phil (RAU)
Clinical Psychologist in Private Practice, Randburg, Gauteng

So youve got the hots for her have you, or hes really cute. So what now? Do you sidle over to the person in question and
ask, whats a beautiful girl like you doing in a place like this? Or do you just follow them home and get arrested for being a
stalker?

eeting somebody, who you think is great,

is not always easy and we all have to think
up ways of getting connected. However this is
not the most difficult part of relationships. Its
getting into the right relationship thats more
difficult. Staying in this relationship is another
thing all together. We need just look around at
parents and family to see how much pain a
relationship can cause and Im sure you are
aware of the difficulties youve had in your own
friendships. Its not going to surprise you to tell
you that boyfriend and girlfriend relationships
are also difficult and can cause a lot of pain.
Sometimes our attraction to others leaves us
with the illusion that things will work out and
be OK because it feels so good. We soon realise
however that this is not true and that we can
get even more hurt in this type of relationship.
So you ask the question: Whats a relationship
all about and how do I minimise the chance of
getting hurt? Some other questions that may
be on your lips are:
How do I know when Im really in love and
when Im just infatuated (smitten)?
Is it just a feeling that the other person
produces in you or is it something more?
These are difficult questions for all of us and
some people are never able to answer them,
no matter how old they are. You may ask why.
It seems that the power of being infatuated is
very strong and we are often drawn to what is
least compatible with us in terms of what fits
relationship-wise. The younger we are the more
likely we are to make the mistake of going for
the thing that makes us feel good, yet this very
person may indeed be wrong for us. It seems
that choosing is the issue and that we need to
choose before we get too involved in a
relationship, because thats when its too late
and we may well be past the point of saying no.
So how does one choose if its not on the basis
of what immediately attracts you. It sometimes
amazes me that we are able to choose friends

30

and we are also quite able to choose friends of

the opposite sex when we are not interested in
them. However all this knowledge that we
build up over the period of our lives, when we
are not sexually aware, seems to go to waste
when we get attracted. Most of us have good
friends and are able to relate to these friends on
some level of intimacy, so why cant we employ
this kind of good judgement when it comes to
the hottie of our lives? Its when the dreaded
hormonal instinct strikes that we become bewitched by anothers charm and seductiveness.
It is when all is lost and our skills of making
friends on a relationship level is thrown into the
garbage bin. Some of us even argue that I dont
want to get involved with a friend. In fact just
being friends sounds horribly like being
dumped or getting brushed off the last thing
we want in our lives!
Without being the ultimate fuddy duddy it
seems that relationships are not only about
being sexually attracted to another person and
that they ask of us at least some good judgement on an emotional and intellectual level.

Most important however seems to be the fact

that we know ourselves to some degree or
other.
Why? you ask slightly irritated.
Well if you dont know yourself, how are you
going to get to know the person youre getting
involved with and how do you think you can
tell somebody about yourself if you cant even
tell yourself who you are.
So are you ready for a relationship? You may
be a little doubtful by now and would like to do
something practical to help you decide. You
may have already decided that you know how
relationships work, and the last thing you want
to have is somebody dictating to you how you
must go about relating to your partner, be they
youre girlfriend or boyfriend.
Well, I challenge you to take a test. You have
to be honest though, and make sure that you
realise that youre only kidding yourself if you
dont answer the questions sincerely. At the end
a relationship maturity scale will be given and
an interpretation of your readiness for a lasting
relationship.

How to rate yourself

When you evaluate your ratings, see which
categories you fall short in and focus
particularly on the implication for your
relationship readiness. More particularly focus
on how this feature will affect your relationships
in general. Heres how to interpret your scores:
A low score indicates that you are really
struggling in this aspect and definitely need
some serious work in this area.
A medium score indicates that things are
going OK but you are definitely in need of a
little work. Youre on the right track, so have
a look at which areas need a little work.
A high score indicates that youre doing
pretty well in this area. If you were really
honest, it means that you dont have to
worry about this aspect of yourself. It also
means that your relationship is likely to be
successful in this regard.

The total score indicates your readiness for a

relationship. If you find that you are very low in
terms of the scores you need to take a good
look at your readiness for a relationship of a sexual nature. The four areas of Emotional maturity;
Social effectiveness; Choosing; and Friendship
together constitute markers for an enduring r
elationship with a partner. Sexual attraction is a
very poor way of ascertaining whether you are
ready for a relationship. It is important in
determining Who you choose but not in How
you choose. How you choose is deeply tied up
with the above four factors and your score
could be a concern in how long your
relationship will last and if you are able to get a
true relationship going in the first place. Lastly,
if you obtained a very low score, it would be
advisable to go over the questions carefully and
ask yourself: What behaviour do I have
to change before I am ready for a
relationship?

The China Study

best-selling author on natural health

Available from most good online book sites

wanted to review Dr Colin Campbells latest book Whole as it has just been
released and his book The China Study has been around since 2005. The problem
is, The China Study is the ONE book that is, in my opinion, the most essential book
anyone can read, from doctors and specialists to lay people, on cancer and diet.
The blurb reads, The science is clear. The results are unmistakable. Change your
diet and dramatically reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
I know there are many people who have still not read The China Study so I have
chosen to review it in our first issue, as it is possibly the most life-changing book
you will ever read on nutrition and your health.
The cover says, The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and
it simply is. I have been studying natural health and nutrition for over 30 years and
in all that time, having read hundreds of books on the subject, I have never yet found
a book that is so scientifically based, yet so readable and comprehensive that it
leaves nothing to chance. Dr Campbell is probably the most humble academic I have ever met. He has been at his studies and
research for over 50 years and genuinely knows his subject backwards. Yet his approach to his research is very simple. He has the
ability to stand back and not only ask uncomfortable questions, but be prepared to live with the uncomfortable answers.
This is a book you must never lend to anyone; it is simply too valuable and you can never stop learning from it. It contains just too
much to take in the first or even second time you read it.
He tackles the issue of carcinogenic chemicals in our food for example, in such surprising way. For instance he says, But what if
researchers produced considerably more impressive scientific results that were far more substantial? What if there was a chemical
that experimentally turned cancer on in 100% of the test animals and its relative absence limited cancer to 0% of the animals.
Finding such a chemical would be the Holy Grail of cancer research. The implications would be enormous. This is exactly what I
saw in the Philippines. The chemical was protein, Protein! The results were more than startling.
He maintains that carcinogens simply load the gun and that excess animal protein, above 5% of the daily calorie value, is what
pulls the trigger.
Needless to say, the book and the research is not what some people want to hear and this I believe is the main reason this book
has some critics. People would rather place the responsibility of their disease on some unknown mysterious thing, not on the food
they were raised on. That makes it just too uncomfortable. They would rather put their faith in the latest drug or supplement than
in personal responsibility.
Dr Campbells allies are too numerous to ignore. You can read what fellow scientists and medics have to say about his work. Read
the book, go to the T.ColinCampbell.org website; this man sells nothing, he has no commercial interests in what he writes about;
and that in my opinion is just one reason to trust this profound work.

Cut Poison Burn

he documentary Cut Poison Burn terrifyingly demonstrates that the cancer

industry is plagued with greed, bias, secrecy, ignorance, intimidation and evil.
Lets be blunt here: if you think that the interests of the patient come first, you are
woefully mistaken.
Public and private funds have been thrown around like confetti at a country fair to
close up and destroy clinics, hospitals and scientific research laboratories which do
not conform to the viewpoint of medical associations, stated Benedict Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald was special counsel to the Senate Interstate and Foreign Commerce
Committee in 1953. He was commissioned by Congressman Charles Tobey of
Massachusetts to investigate the obstruction of natural cancer treatments by the
American Medical Association. His report to the committee is known as The
Fitzgerald Report of 1953.
This documentary exposes the corrupt nature of the cancer industry where
unelected bureaucrats make the rules about the dangerous and mostly useless
treatments you are pressurised into taking. It further exposes the situation where
chemotherapy has not been approved as safe for children yet, when the parents of
a 4-year-old child refuse chemotherapy for him because of the horrendous side
effects, they are taken to court for child abuse.
Cut Poison Burn will leave you in no doubt that your only hope of a real fight
against cancer is not to get it in the first place.

GENETIC SEEDS of DISEASE:

How to beat the odds
T Colin Campbell, PhD
T Colin Campbell is the Director of the Cornell-Oxford-China Diet and Health Project. He was trained at Cornell (MS, PhD)
and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry, and toxicology. He presently holds the endowed chair of Jacob
Gould Schurman Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University.

How often these days do you read that genes cause cancer? Probably nothing in biomedical science deserves more attention.
In my view, it even needs attention in nutrition newsletters. Why? Because theres a peculiar line of reasoning doing the
rounds that goes something like this: If genes are primarily responsible for determining when and what kinds of cancer we
get, then what dierence does it make what we eat? Essentially, this is a very fatalistic view. Further, if this notion about
genes is accepted as being valid, then many may be tempted to simply trade in bad genes for good genes. Regrettably,
this is an idea that is very much alive in science and kicking up considerable funding support. Rather than succumbing
fatalistically to gene research reports or trading our genes haphazardly, lets start to think more seriously about preventing
cancer, quite literally, by getting at its root.

Where is the money going?

Ive previously commented in this newsletter
(from the T. Colin Campbell Foundation) on
some of my concerns about this overemphasis on gene research (see August 1995
issue). While some of the new gene discoveries
may provide hopeful opportunities, many are
clearly harmful, especially when people are not
properly informed. Tragically, some people
have become so distraught after finding out
that they or their loved ones have a particular
bad gene, that they then take unconscionable
action. Ive been called twice by mothers
seeking advice on possible mastectomies for
their daughters. Why do NIH and similar
funding agencies provide far more research
funding for investigations on the genetic
control of disease rather than for the
nutritional control of disease? Whose purpose
is being served here? Consider this: Improper
diets, when compared to genetic backgrounds, are responsible for perhaps
3040 times more cancers (at least), yet
genetic research, according to my estimate,
gets 3040 times more funds. On the more
hopeful side, however, I would say this: If
genes only indicate potential, not certainty for
disease, then knowledge of troublesome
genes may motivate people to be more
careful about their dietary and lifestyle habits.

New study reveals major

research flaws
My reason for returning to this subject yet
again is a very important study published this
past spring (N Engl J Med 2000). The findings
of this study make a particularly compelling
point that genes matter little, practically
speaking, in the causation of cancer. I can
hardly imagine a study being more
devastating to the idea that genes are
responsible for cancer risk. The study I have in
mind was undertaken by scientists within the

National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the NIH. The

study group was headed by a very prominent
and experienced senior investigator,
Dr Robert Hoover. The investigators asked a
very simple question about whether identical
twins were more likely to get cancers than
were other sibling pairs.

While some of the new

gene discoveries may provide
hopeful opportunities, ma ny

Focus on Cancer

You see, identical twins have essentially the

same genes, thus they should get the same
cancers if their genes are the primary cause.
According to this reasoning, if one member
of the twin pair gets a specific cancer, then
the second member, who carries the same
genes, should also get it.
The extent to which the same cancers
occurred for both members of an identical
twin pair (same genes) was compared with
the extent to which both members of a nonidentical twin pair got the same cancer. The
genes of non-identical twin pairs are no more
alike than any other pair of siblings.
The findings from this study are unusually
revealing. First, this study was the largest of its
kind ever undertaken. Cancer deaths among
5 690 identical twin pairs were compared
with cancer deaths among 7 248 nonidentical twin pairs. Second, careful attention
was given to include the details of recordkeeping so that only those records with
verifiable information would be used in the
analysis. It was, in my view, a well-designed
and well-executed study.
Briefly, without getting into all the detailed
findings, these scientists concluded that:
knowledge of the cancer mortality
experience of an individual will not
commonly have strong predictive value for
the experience of another individual who has
identical genes.

38

November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1 The NATURAL WAY Magazine

Probabilities vs realities
What this conclusion says, basically, is that
genes do not matter, at least for any
significant proportion of cancers. To be
specific, the probability of both identical twins
getting cancer was only 1.4 times that for both
non-identical twins getting cancer, a result of
only borderline statistical significance.

If gen es only indicate

potential, not certainty for
disease, then knowledge of
trou blesome genes may
motivate people to be more
careful about their dieta ry
a nd lifestyle ha bits
Even for one of the cancers known to have a
definite gene linkage from the mechanism
point of view (a certain type of colon cancer),
there was essentially no evidence that the
mere presence of this gene actually caused
the cancer. To put this 1.4-fold difference into
further perspective, smokers are eight to ten
times more likely to get lung cancer than
non-smokers, while people chronically
infected with hepatitis B virus are 2040 times
more likely to get liver cancer than noninfected people.

This small 1.4-fold increase, if real, might even

be due to the greater similarity of lifestyles for
identical twins than for non-identical twins.
And finally this: these results essentially agree
with the findings of four other smaller studies
previously published. In short, this difference,
even if real, is so small that it virtually
eliminates genes as an important cause of
human cancer. This brings up some very
practical questions. Why is so little attention
given to the idea that it is not the mere
presence of bad genes but the expression of
these genes that matters most? For genes to
cause something, they cannot lie dormant;
they must be switched on or expressed. Thus,
why isnt gene expression, especially by
nutritional means, given more attention, both
among researchers and between researchers
and the general public?

Genetic deceptions
In conclusion, even though I had often
thought that genes might account for a small
proportion of human cancers, I am surprised
by this finding showing that genes appear to
contribute little or nothing to cancer risk. I
would have thought that we might have seen
in this study at least a small genetic effect. The
subjects in this study were men who, in all
likelihood, consumed a typical American diet.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

With such a diet, whatever cancer-causing

genes might have been present should have
been consistently and uniformly expressed as
cancer. This was not seen. Therefore, I must
conclude on the basis of these and other data
with considerable confidence that differences
in cancer rates between people or individuals
cannot be attributed simply to genes.
Obviously, the gene story is about much
more than genes. Its about what we eat and
what we dont eat. It is also about the great
reluctance on the part of so many of us to
change our eating habits. Despite the fact
that Americans are more nutrition-conscious
than ever before, significant change is
painfully slow to come. During the past
30 years, and especially so in the last decade,
the number of overweight children has more
than doubled.

Without getting into all the detailed findings, these scientists

concluded that: knowledge of the ca ncer mortality experience of
an individual will not commonly have strong predictive valu e for the
experience of a nother individual who has identical genes.

The Natural Garden

Get that VEGGIE GARDEN

going in SIX EASY STEPS!
Sean Freeman
Sean Freeman is the driving force behind www.livingseeds.co.za .With a lifelong passion for collecting seed, Sean has turned his
hobby into becoming South Africas largest Heirloom Vegetable Seed supplier. Married for 18 years to his wife Nicola, they have
ve children, and practise a self-sustainable lifestyle on their small farm in Southern Gauteng, where the majority of their seed is
grown.

Vegetable gardening has already become a fashionable pastime. The beauty of a veggie garden is that it can be done on
a shoe-string budget in pots on your patio, or as a traditional garden in the ground. Whether formal or
informal, a veggie garden is a huge asset to the family, specifically in terms of providing a constant supply of healthy,
organic, fresh veggies for the family. In our business we are seeing a sharp increase in the number of people who are starting
veggie gardens, and this article answers some of the most commonly asked questions that we receive on a daily basis.

n the not too distant past, growing your

own vegetables was a given and almost
every home had a veggie garden. It was just
something that everybody did. People
needed to stretch their rands as far as they
could, while ensuring that they were able to
feed their families nutritious and wholesome
food. Also, in direct contradiction to todays
lifestyle, there was only one trip to the supermarket every month. The entire months groceries were purchased on a single trip and as
fresh fruits and veggies were highly perishable, they were more often grown in the garden than bought from the store.
Fast forward to today and you have new
reasons for growing your own vegetables.
There are myriads of pesticides, herbicides,
fungicides, coatings, sprays, waxes and dips
that are pumped onto and into your
vegetables at all stages of growth, as well as in
the packing and processing stages. Its no
wonder that many people have developed
hyper-sensitivities to the chemicals found in
fresh fruits and vegetable that they are unable
to wash off as they are now part of the produce.
The next issue is the increasing prevalence
of genetically modified (GM) foods that are
being pushed into our food system
unlabelled and unidentifiable. If you purchase
ANY grain-fed meat, it will be GM infected.
If you purchase ANY plastic packaged,
processed food with more than five ingredients
you can be sure that its also GM infected. There
is a massive amount of information available
that shows in study after study that foods
infected with GM ingredients are detrimental.
OK, this is not intended to scare you; however,
those are the realities of eating food you have
no control over.

40

The simplest and easiest way for you to take

control of your food is to grow your own. As an
intelligent consumer you can protect yourself
and your family by growing as many of your
own veggies as possible, on your own property,
and under your own supervision. This way you
will know exactly what is going into your soil,
onto your plants and onto your plate.
In addition you will be getting some shared
family time, exercise, vitamin D-infused sunlight
and the added benefit of being exposed to
billions of beneficial organisms that will help to
increase your immune response.

The si mplest a nd
easiest way for you to ta ke
control of your food is to
grow your own
Starting a vegetable garden is simple to
implement all it takes is some planning and a
little effort. We are now approaching the end of
winter, which is the perfect time to start
planning your vegetable garden.

My tips for the first-time

vegetable gardener
Start small
Seriously, I have seen many first-time
vegetable gardeners rush out and create a
massive 20 m 10 m vegetable garden and
plant it up to the hilt with seed and seedlings.
It looks great for the first few months, until
the mid-summer weed storm hits. Within a
matter of two weeks the beautiful veggie
garden is indistinguishable from a roadside

verge covered in weeds. Then the effort to

clear the veggie garden is tremendous and
most often people give up in despondency.
Starting small gives you an understanding
of how different veggies grow, and gives
you a manageable area to maintain by
pulling a few weeds out every evening after
work.
Once you have a taste for the work and
the needs of your garden you can either
keep it the same size or you can slowly
increase it.

Choose the best location

If you are serious about growing veggies,
look at giving your veggie garden the best
possible chance. The best facing locations
in order are north, west, east and then
south. Take note of any large trees that will
shade your garden and try to site the veggie
garden in clear sunlight. The absolute
minimum sunlight required for growing
veggies is six hours per day. Yes there are
certain veggies that can handle shade, but
unless you can live on chillies and lettuce,
aim for as much direct sun exposure as
possible. If you are stuck with an east- or
south-facing veggie garden, look at painting
the surrounding walls white to increase
reflected light into your veggie garden.

Plan the bed orientation

If you are planting into beds, have the beds
run east to west and plant taller veggies like
corn and runner beans at the back of the
veggie garden. That way each bed gets full
sun the whole day and the taller plants will
not shade the shorter ones.

The NATURAL WAY Magazine November/December 2013 | Volume 1 Issue 1

The Natural Garden

Organic matter is your

BEST friend
Become a compost/manure/organic matter
scrounger. This is a vitally important aspect of
a veggie garden. You need to keep feeding the
soil with carbon-based organic matter.
However, and this is critical, do not dig the
organic matter into your soil. Apply it as a
mulch about 35 cm thick over every bed
surface. This will encourage the natural soil
goggas to build up a population in your soil,
and turn that mulch into natural food for your
plants. When you start to see patches of soil
again you know that its time to add another
layer of mulch.

Plant from seed

Yes, I know I sell seed; however, planting from
seed is the most cost-effective way to raise
vegetables. If you have planted too many,
share or swap them with friends that way you
can increase your planted varieties at a lower
cost, and the extra seedlings will not go to
waste. As a general seed-sowing rule, root
vegetables are started directly in the ground as
they dont like being transplanted, and all other
vegetables are started in seedling trays or small
pots.

Start with easy win veggies

As a first-time vegetable gardener, look at
planting veggies that are easy to grow and that
you enjoy eating frequently. Yes growing
beautiful brinjals, cauliflower and extreme
chillis are cool, but for a new gardener, they
require some experience to germinate and
grow successfully. Start off with crops like
lettuce, Swiss chards, Chinese cabbages,
beetroot, carrots, cherry tomatoes, bush beans
and marrows. These veggies will perform well
and will give you an idea of how things grow.
From there you can then expand your planting
range and bed size to accommodate new and
exciting varieties.

Finally, get your children involved

If you want your children to eat what comes
out of the garden, they need to become
involved in the process of producing their own
food. Not only does the process of growing
veggies teach your children a new skill, it allows
them to become creative in the garden.
Children are much more inclined to eat fresh
raw veggies directly out of the garden, than
something that Mom dragged out of the
freezer, and boiled for half-an-hour on the
stove. Fresh veggies have a unique mouth-feel,
they are crisp, crunchy and have a range of
natural sugars that cannot be duplicated in
veggies that have been bought in stores or in
a magic bag from the frozen section.
So, look at planning a garden over the next
few weeks. Give it pride of place in your garden
as this will surely be the best food investment
you will make for your family this summer.

Pomegranate juice and seeds have the highest levels of antioxidants of all
foods.
Studies have shown that the intake of coconut oil can help our bodies build
resistance to both viruses and bacteria that can cause illness. Even more, it
also can help to fight off yeast, fungus and Candida.
Mangosteen fruit contains a variety of phytonutrients, including cathechins,
proanthocyanidins and polysaccharides, that promote healthy metabolism
and digestion, support the immune system and serve as strong antioxidants.
However, unique to mangosteens is the presence of a new class of
phytonutrients known as xanthones, another potent antioxidant. Found in
the rind of the fruit, xanthones may be beneficial in combating several health
maladies due to their anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antifungal
and antiviral properties. It is available in South Africa as bottled juice. Look for
a brand that contains no refined sugar or manufactured preservatives.

Pomegranate

Cabbage has high levels of thiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, lutein, zeaxanthin,

sulforaphane and isothiocyanates. These compounds are powerful
antioxidants and are known to help protect against breast, colon and prostate
cancers, and help reduce LDL or bad cholesterol levels in the blood. Red
cabbage has higher levels of beta-carotene, anthocyanin polyphenols and
vitamin C than green cabbage. Both contain more vitamin C than oranges.
Green cabbage is higher in chlorophyll. Both are very high in glucosinolates,
the anti-cancer super antioxidant.
Cabbage is a very good source of vitamin K, providing about 63% of RDA
levels. Vitamin K plays a potential role in bone metabolism by promoting
osteotrophic activity in them. So enough vitamin K in the diet gives you
healthy bones. In addition, vitamin K also has an established role in assisting
patients with Alzheimers disease by limiting neuronal damage in their brain.

Coconut Oil

Mushrooms support the immune system with specialised lectins that

recognise cancer cells, and prevent the cells from dividing and growing.
Mushroom phytochemicals enhance the activity of natural killer cells, which
are specialised immune cells that attack and destroy virus-infected and
cancerous cells. Mushrooms are unique in their breast cancer-preventing
effects. Frequent consumption of mushrooms (approximately one button
mushroom per day) has been shown to decrease the risk of breast cancer by
64%. Mushrooms and pomegranates are the only two foods that inhibit
aromatase (which produces oestrogen), and mushrooms, especially the
common white button and Portobello mushrooms, have strong antiaromatase activity.
Mushrooms protect against all cancers. These effects have been studied in
relation to stomach, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers.
AIM Veggie D contains mushrooms and vitamin D, with both playing a role
in preventing cancer. Vitamin D is available from natural sunlight and is known
for its protective effect against cancer.

Testimonial
Samantha Crane
Cancer survivor
My name is Samantha Crane and I am 41 years old. I have
been blessed with a loving husband Colin, and two amazing
children Keagan 13 and Kelby 10. For the last 22 years I have
been the epitome of health but it was not always so.
At 18, just finished matric, I had the world at my feet (or so I
thought) only to be diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma.
What a shock it is to be told you have cancer. This is how my
journey began. I decided to make a fresh start so I hit the
reset button and began on the road to health and wellness.
I pride myself in being a cancer survivor and I believe I
beat the odds due to a change in diet and lifestyle. I am
passionate about nutrition, fitness, people and health and
most importantly, a relationship with God who teaches us
how to enjoy life to its fullest.
The Natural Way and Aim products became the most important
part of my nutritional life. I have a good standing relationship
with the companies and Im proud to say Im associated with
them as I admire their ethos and morals. Being a cancer survivor,
the most important thing is that the lifestyle has to be good for
me and the Natural Way and Aim meet my every need. They
support my immune system which is first prize to me.
On my journey I learned that a healthy lifestyle is a way of life,
its not a diet. I have been absolutely sold on this way of eating
and products and have continued eating this way throughout
my life, and it shows. People ask me why my children never get
sick and why they do so well academically, on the sports field
and culturally. People comment that we look so young and I tell
them that we eat a clean, whole-food diet, which helps us have
a balanced lifestyle with all its benefits.
I am a natural health consultant and have been in the game for
the last 22 years. My focus is on sharing knowledge and God
has given me a unique ability to be able to accomplish this.
Prevention is better than cure so I educate people about health
and fitness during consults and whoever I talk to on a daily basis.
Concerns for most people are the complexity and trends in the
health industry what is in today is out tomorrow. So where do
you start? What must you do and how do you do it?
Just keep it simple. Change your habits today and sit back and
watch the changes that occur on the road to being the person

il Bufalo@large

il Bufalo@large

I run I ran

I RON

Another day, another dollar, same *%$#, dierent day. Or is it?

ere I am undercover in the Middle East, il

Bufalo, cunningly disguised as a
responsible adult, a role that can be a lot of
fun if you dont take it too seriously. The exact
location is being kept a secret because it just
sounds more interesting.
Someone still needs to explain slowly in
single syllables, why it is called the Middle
East? Despite a common misconception,
Japan, not Boksburg, is in the Far East. All the
little bits between the Middle East and the
Far East are called the East. Surely then the
East is in the middle? This leads to the
conclusion that the Middle East should be
correctly renamed the Near East, does it not?
Now that we have sorted that out, there are
times when Im not sure if its the Middle East,
Middle Ages or the Middle Earth where the
Hobbits reside. Come to think of it, a lot of the
clothing here has a Lord of the Rings feel,
which probably wont take Paris by storm.
Maybe we should stick with the Middle Earth
theme as there is no on top of the world
feeling here.
Aside from the confusion caused by the
naming of the area, the culture is just as
confusing and makes the simple act of
exercising a real pain in the rear. Running, for
example, requires long pants and long sleeves;
the reason for this will become even more
unclear.
My body has grown up/older faster than my
brain, which still thinks I am 21, and requires
a lot of care through exercise and eating lots
of dead plants (not dead animals Im told).
In an attempt to recapture my physical
youth to keep it in sync with my juvenile
mentality, and being on the market again, I
need to regain some semblance of attractiveness to the opposite sex. So in order to
transform from a couch potato to a machine
I have taken to running, cycling and
swimming. From time to time a little triathlon
is completed as a gentle reality check.
Where were we? Ah yes, exercising with the
arms and legs covered in public. A few runs
in 40 C temperatures revealed that tracksuit
pants were overkill. The next best option
identified was a pair of compression tights. If
youre looking for attention there is nothing
quite like running around in the Middle East
in tights with a strategically worn long

46

running shirt to cover the wobbly bits. There

were more gaping mouths than the number
of pigeons doing what they do best, on a
statue of course. After being ignored for
20 years (dont ask), the attention was
wonderful a rock star at last!
After a few long runs in the tights the
knees started hurting. Being a bit analytical
it did not take too long to identify the tights
as the culprit. The conclusion was that the
tights were compressing the kneecaps and
preventing them from moving as God
designed them to move. The only way to
prove the theory was to run without them.
The choices were limited: shorts, which
would result in a long stay in free
accommodation with men of evil intent; or
cutting holes in the new, hi-tech
compression tights. Tracksuit pants were not
an option!
Armed with a pair of blunt scissors and
scant regard for the fancy tights, the
modifications were made two ragged,
knee-shaped holes and we were ready for
lift off.
All kitted out in a long running shirt,
modified tights, heart rate monitor, shades
and cap, I went running. This time there was
no knee pain, oh joy! The knees were better
but the now attention was negative
before there was interest, now there were
sniggers and rude comments in a foreign
tongue. Initially this was put down to a few
odd folk. However with every run the
negativity continued. This was disastrous,
from a rock star to a heretic, an object of
verbal abuse.
This was not good,
This was not nice,
To be laughed at,
Not once but thrice?
(Apologies to Dr S).
From sore knees to bruised ego, was I that odd?
Yes, I do look different from the locals, yes I do
dress differently, Im lighter, taller, less hairy, but
this was a bit over the top. After a lot of
investigation I found out the knees and elbows
are seen as having something to do with sex.

So by running round with my knees sticking

out was almost as bad as running around
naked with the wobbly bits flying around.
I can understand those not being to everyones liking, but knees and elbows? I spent a
week looking at my joints, I looked in the
mirror, I took photos and zoomed in on the
photos on my laptop. Just did not get it. Here
were these knees, white, knobbly and hairy. I
looked, examined, poked, felt and even
shaved them to see if these knee things did
anything for me. Still nothing what could it
be that made them so exciting to others?

My body has grown

up/older faster tha n my brain,
which still thinks I a m 21, a nd
requires a lot of care through
exercise a nd eating lots of
dead pla nts (not dead a nimals
Im told)
After a week of sleepless nights, tossing and
turning, a light came on at 3 am. There is a
very clear relationship between sex and the
knees and elbows. Being no longer married,
aka divorced, for a while, had allowed the
memories to fade. Yes these bits were used in
the process of making the body happy. It was
one of the early steps in the art of seduction.
I had discovered this great secret of the black
cloth. The knees and elbows were symbols,
they were constant reminders of getting on
your hands and knees, crying please, please,
Ive only had one turn this year!
After this major discovery a true breakthrough in the understanding of the human
brain I still run, but back in my tracksuit
pants, making sure my sexy knee objects are
safely covered. Back in rock star mode, nice
smiles and happy spectators, all is well here in
the Middle Earth.
So yes, some things have changed, others
not. Its a new day, not a different day.
