Background:
This is day two of a 3 week thematic unit based on the series of If You Give a books by
Laura Numeroff.
Students will use their prior knowledge of true and false as it pertains to them to make
connections to the lesson.
Students will use their prior knowledge of number recognition to learn to write the numbers
2 and 3.
Content Objective(s):
Students will be able to differentiate between true and false statements with 80% accuracy.
Students will be able to write the number 2 and 3 with 90% accuracy.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key
details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.2 With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key
details.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.2 Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information
presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details
and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.3 Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information,
or clarify something that is not understood.
CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects
with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
Key Vocabulary:
Mouse small rodent.
Cookie - A small, usually flat and crisp cake made from sweetened dough.
Milk - A whitish liquid that comes from a cow.
Straw A long cylinder used to drink with.
Napkin - A piece of cloth or paper used at table to wipe the lips and fingers.
Mirror - Something that reflects or gives a true picture of something else.
Tape - A narrow strip of plastic used to stick things together.
Scissors Metal tool used to cut paper.
Mop Long stick with yarn on the end used to clean the floor.
Refrigerator Large box used to keep food cool.

Teaching Strategies:

Warm Up Activity:
Teacher will ask students to help recall what the story was about form the day before.
Teacher and students will discuss what happened in the story.
Teacher and students will read the story created by the students from the day before of If You
Give a Mouse a Cookie to confirm what the students remembered.
Teacher will ask the students if they know the difference between true and false.
Lesson Sequence:
Teacher and students will discuss true and false statements in the students lives.
Teacher will ask students to make statements about themselves and the other students will try
to determine if the statement is true or false.
Teacher will read 16 cards containing story elements.
Teacher will ask the students to decide if they are true or false.
Teacher will have students place them under the correct heading card in the pocket chart by
choosing sticks to call on students.
Students will write the answers on the recording sheet.
Teacher will model the numbers 2 and 3 for students.
Students will copy as teacher writes the numbers in the air.
Students will complete worksheets for writing numbers 2 and 3.
Accommodations:
Students that are struggling can be partnered up with another student that has a firm grasp
on the material we are covering.
Students are grouped based upon their current ability levels. Groups change often depending
on the content being taught.
Teacher will work one on one if needed.
Supplementary Materials:
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie story written on the SMARTboard form the day before.

Review/Assessment:
Students will be informally assessed based upon their comprehension of true and false
statements during discussion.
Students will be formally assessed based upon their record worksheet and numbers 2 and
3 worksheets.
