DESIGN TIPS
Many cars in recent competitions have failed because of poor mechanical design.
So take particular care to:
Ensure that your car will travel in a straight line.
Ensure that the car is able to travel on different surfaces. We cannot guarantee that the

surface for the Grand Final Competition is as level or as smooth as the one you used for
your test work.
WHERE TO FROM HERE?
(a) To enter the competition, make up a team and contact your Department Competition
Coordinator.
(b) Before proceeding with any practical trials, each team must receive the go-ahead in
writing from your Department Competition Coordinator.
(c) To obtain the go-ahead, each team must submit to the Department Competition
Coordinator a written description of the concept for the car. This must include a risk
assessment (see Safety section below) anddetails of chemicals to be used and their
associated hazards.
Registration and Concept Submission
The registration and the concept submission have to be conducted between December
15th 2013 until February 15th 2014 via email at icecc@chem-eng.its.ac.id There will be
template given at www.chernival.its.ac.id. Registrations behind this deadline will not be
taken into account. Late registration will not be considered. The concept should contain:
1. Description of the functionality of the model car including a sketch. The description
has to be technical comprehensible especially the chemical reaction and the conversion
into kinetic energy.
2. A list of the used chemicals and their approximately needed amount.
3. The safety analysis and list of hazardous has to be submitted to ICECC committee for
safety regulation. All of Chem-E-Cars team must submit it at icecc@chem-eng.its.ac.id
before February 15th 2014.
4. First estimation of possible emissions and how those may be avoided.
5. Complete contact information of the qualified supervisor from the university (name,
university, address, phone no, e-mail), the contact information of the team leader (name,
university, address, phone no, e-mail) and a list of all team members (name, e-mail,
studies, semester, university).
After approved registration the supervisor will obtain a summary of the team data
including a declaration, that the rules have been accepted. This declaration has to be
signed by every single team member and mail together with concept submission.

Poster & Race Competition

Poster Competition:
A poster with A1 paper size must be displayed along with the autonomous vehicle on the
day of the competition. The poster competition display and judging will occur 1 day
before Chem-E-Car performance Competition. Team members should present during
judging to answer questions from the judges. The poster presentation takes place in the
evening of April 11th 2014. The exact time will be announced beforehand.
The poster should contain these following content:
1. Name of the team and members.
2. An image of the model car, design creativity, and unique features from
the vehicle.
3. Technical description of the chemical reaction (How is the car powered).
4. The originality of the concept.
5. Abstract of the constructional processing including a process flowsheet.
6. Description of the chemical reaction / power source / stopping
mechanism.
7. Environmental and safety features.
8. Economical aspects.
9. Quality of the poster and team member presentations.
10. The poster must be in English, and the presentation must be in English
too.

Race Competition:
(a). The car will start with its front end just touching the designated starting point. There
will be a designated finish line. The distance will be measured with respect to the front
end of the car. The goal of the competition is to have your car stop closest to the specified
finish line (not being out of bounds) while carrying the specified load. When measuring
the distance from the prescribed distance it does not matter if the car goes longer or
shorter than the prescribed distance. The course will be wedge shaped with a starting
point and the prescribed distance clearly marked in an arc of constant distance from the
starting point (Figure 1). The car must not leave the marked area (Figure 1). Vehicle that
goes outside the course will be disqualified from that round of competition.

Figure 1. Sketch of The Race

Area
(b). Each car will be given two
opportunities to traverse a
specified
distance carrying a certain additional load. The required load and distance will be
announced to the teams one-hour prior to the start of the performance competition. The
distance will be between 10 and 25 m 0.005 m and the load will be calculated from
percentage of car weight (10-20%). One hour before starting the jury will announce the
conditions of additional load as well as the range, both parameters will be drawn. Teams
may not add or remove any water (or other items) to adjust their vehicle weight once the
poster session has concluded. The team that has the nearest target distance in either one
opportunity is the winner. The winner will be decided by the best average from the two
runs completed. If the average is the same, the prizes will be combined and divided
equally among the teams. The calculation for winner judging is :
E = (E1 + E2)/2
where En = error of trial n. The overhead bar indicates the averaged value of the errors
from two runs. Specifically, the error is calculated as:
EN = 100 (LN-DN)/DN
where L = actual length (in meter) that the car traverses and D = designated distance (in
meter). Therefore, the team with the least score will be the winner.

(c). The Chem-E-Car Competition judges will announce each team just prior to the start
of their run. The team then has 5 minutes to get to the starting line, introduce their entry
to the audience and start their car. Each car will have 2 attempts. In the first round of
attempts the order of the teams will be by a random draw and the draw will be
communicated to the team leader. At the completion of the first round of attempts there
will be a 30-minute break before the second round begins.
(d). An objective of this contest is a demonstration of the ability to control a chemical
reaction. The only energy source for the propulsion of the car is a chemical reaction. The
distance travelled by the car must be controlled by a chemical reaction and no other
means.
(e). All components of the car must fit into a shoebox with dimensions equal to or smaller
than 32 x 20 x 12 cm. The car may be disassembled to meet this requirement. If the
judges are uncertain whether the car will fit inside the box when dissembled they may
request that the team demonstrate they can do this.
(f). The teams must use common protective safety (especially safety goggles) during
preparation and running of the model cars. Lab coats and safety goggles are organized by
the teams, while protective gloves will be locally available. Jury has the right to deny the
start of any team due to safety doubts at any time. Every team has to check your safety
system being used to Jury of ICECC directly before the day of competition.
(g). Hot surfaces and hot gases have to be handled with corresponding avoiding
possibilities of scalds or burns. For chemecars team that use biological hazardous
substances of the first level of endangerment may be accepted. For storage of the
chemicals and for the reaction only laboratory accepted vessels have to be used.
(h). No hazardous material may be exhausted into the environment! Emissions of
harmless material may occur, if safety analysis documents that only small amounts are
emitted without any risk being exposed neither for persons nor for environment.
Flammable or explosive gases must not leak into the atmosphere. The following material
may be exhausted in small amounts:
a. Nitrogen
b. Carbon dioxide
c. Oxygen
d. Water vapour
(i). Chem-Cars, which are operated under pressure, have to be checked for pressure
resistance. The product of chamber volume and pressure must not exceed 50 bar. The

used pressure-vessel must not burst or deform at operating temperature and at 1.2-times
of the operating pressure within 15 min. Pressure resistance tests have to be documented
in the inspection sheets and must be done at least three times. The sheets have to be
signed by a qualified person and submitted to the jury until February 15th 2014.
