PAULIST SERIES CONTINUES

November 30 & December 14, 10:45am-12noon
with Father Bill Edens: Father Hecker as an
example of Prayer. Each of us has interior experiences
of God's presence. For some it is gazing into the eyes of
their beloved, for another it is holding a child, and for yet
another it is walking among the Giant Sequoias and
Douglass Fir trees that form natural sanctuaries in the
Pacific Northwest. We dont need to be a monastic sister
or brother to feel God's presence is communicated to us in
everyday experiences, sacramental encounters, or
moments of meditative prayer. Isaac Hecker (19th century
American) believed that all people could access the
mysterious presence of God. This democratizing of
spiritual experiences is one of the cultural values that
Isaac Hecker brought to the universal church. Theres a
lot to learn from this "Practical Mystic," about connecting
with the deep energy source at the heart of creation.

HECKER QUOTE
The mistake consists in supposing that the present is the finality of
Christianity, whereas the hand of God is opening the way by purifying His
Church, by directing the movements of nations and the issues of the world,
to the end that she may shape the coming future beyond all past experience
in her progressive approach to the perfect realization of her Divine Ideal.
(The Church and the Age , 1887)
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP,
at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time ! Sunday, November 16, 2014

Greetings!

Pastoral Corner

Did you know this?

St .Philip Neri (1515-1595) started the tradition of 40 hours Adoration (Holy Thursday evening until Holy Saturday
Vigil) of the Blessed Sacrament in seven of the parishes of Rome. When St. Philip first arrived in Rome to
evangelize that cityhe began with the children living in the streets. Each afternoon, he would take a pilgrimage to
the seven churches in Rome---and he gathered the children as he went. They would stop and pray before the Blessed
Sacrament in each of the churches. At the end of the pilgrimage--- Philip would offer the children a small lunch and
they would listen as he told them the stories of Jesus. Whether it was the food or the stories ---well never know----St.
Philip became famous for his small group discussions. (Some information from Saints for Dummies.)
The practice of the pilgrimages to the seven churches in Rome is still followed today.
In our country ----- some parishes have Eucharistic chapels/rooms that are open 24 hours where parishioners take
turns sitting with the Blessed Sacrament for an hour. Other parishes have Days of Adoration once a week or once a
month. In our parish, Adoration is on the second Tuesday of each month in the Paulist Center Chapel, 9 -5pm. Its
really very rewarding to spend an hour in the chapel praying, reading a good book, just listeningIf you are
interested (and yes, we do have need of two more people, 9-10am and 10-11am) in signing up as a regular or an
occasional substitute, please contact Doren Dehen (dorenedn@comcast.net) or our parish office before December.
Deo Gratias, Barbara M. Harrison

MICHAEL ALLEN HARRISON CONCERT

Please join us December 1, 2014 at 7:00PM for the

annual Michael Allen Harrison benefit concert, with special
guest Julianne Johnson. This will be the only Michael
Allen Harrison concert in inner SE Portland this year. A
reception follows with traditional homemade
cookies. Tickets are $15 regular admission, $25 preferred
seating, and will be available at the church office and
after the masses starting Nov 15 & 16; Nov 22 & 23; Nov
29 & 30 and the evening of the concert. This our 13th
year, and thus far Michael's concerts have raised $30,447
for the Altar Society. This money was used
for creating an environment for divine worship in the
church and for maintaining Carvlin Hall.

THANKSGIVING MASS TRADITION

Thursday, Nov. 27, 9:30am. Please remember to bring
your bread/biscuits to be Blessed for your holiday
meal. You are welcome to either wrap/label your bread
and place it in front of the Altar OR hold it up when the
blessing is given. This is also the day that we bring nonperishable food items to place in the baskets the
offertory.

PLEASE HELP US MAKE THIS

THANKSGIVING WARMER?
Girl Scout Daisy Troop #40357 is collecting canned food
and new warm socks for those in need this Thanksgiving.
These will be given at the annual Thanksgiving meal here
at St. Philip Neri. Please place your donations of nonperishable food and warm socks in the blue donation bin
in the foyer. For more information, please contact Alison
Olsav at homeforgood05@yahoo.com or 503-757-8241.

CHURCH CLEANING

The Altar Society is asking for assistance with cleaning

the church. Work consists of light dusting; restocking
burnt out candles; washing and refilling holy water
bowls; and straightening up pews. There are two
people working together so this would be a great
opportunity to work with a friend or spouse and a small
way to contribute to the parish. Time it takes is
approximately 1 hour and would be about 4 times a
year. If you are interested in or have any further
questions, please call Marie Tedesco, 503-233-1939.
Thank you.

WERE NOT CALLING IT A PARTY, but it

sounds like one! Sunday, Dec. 21, 10:30am Caroling

and Sing Along, French Toast Breakfast, friends,
visiting. And this year we are especially inviting our
parishioners who are normally homebound and the
Eucharistic Ministers who take them Communion to
be our guests. With this in mind, we are looking for 5
volunteer drivers to transport one or two people to and
from on that day. It would be great if they could share
the 9:30am Mass and then head over to Carvlin for the
get together. Contact barbarah@stphilipneripdx.org or
the parish office.

KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS MISSING?

We need your help. It is often difficult to notice if
some of our older parishioners have not been
attending Mass recently. If you notice someone is
missing please let someone on the staff know, so we
can follow up on them.
